Legacy Pictures/multimedia Storage: was Re: [LegacyUG] What is the best way to do this?
My C:\ drive is a comparatively small solid state disk. I have two other disks, D:\ and E:\ On the C:\ drive I have the OS, plus (among other stuff) C:\Legacy. Into this, I put the absolute minimum I can get away with, but I do use C:\Legacy\Backup for my database backups. C:\Legacy does not contain ANY of my data. On my D:\ drive, I have a D:\Genealogy folder which contains all my genealogy data. I have a D:\Genealogy\Data folder which contains my main database, plus anything else which comes under the generic "data" heading - downloaded Gedcoms, other FDB files etc. - but does not contain any images, videos or other multimedia. I have replicated the Legacy multimedia structure under D:\Genealogy and have added a folder D:\Genealogy\Marriages. This contains all multimedia files relating specifically to people, organised by MRIN, so I have a lot of folders named D:\Genealogy\Marriages\M Hisname and hername M0123 Joe Robert Bloggs and Mary Anne Smith Anything which doesn't belong to a specific person or couple or family goes under the D:\Genealogy multimedia structure. I can foresee no problems with this. I cannot imagine ever having a computer with just one disk but if I do, I'll simply move the D:\Genealogy to C:\Genealogy and use LTools to rename the D: bit to C: I did this once to separate all the MRIN folders out of Data\ to the, then new, Marriages\ and it took LTools all of 10 seconds to change Genealogy\Data to Genealogy\Marriages If you have multiple hard drives, I recommend splitting your data away from your programs. Make sure that you back up your data onto a different drive from the original. I just hope that, one day, the developers will see fit to make Legacy just like every other Windows program and stick it in Program Files where it belongs - but I'm not holding my breath. Legacy Pictures/multimedia Storage: was Re: [LegacyUG] What is the best way to do this?
I'm not sure I'm following this topic correctly. I have my legacy program on my primary drive, but all the rest including the database, the media files, the backups, tips, resources, etc., go into subdirectories under my Legacy folder on my larger working hard drive in my computer. The multimedia backups go into the same folder as the backups. Having these on a separate drive means that when I sync legacy with my backup drives I don't have to sync the primary drive since it is separate. And it keeps too many files from piling up onto my primary drive. Under my Legacy main directory, I also have a large directory/subdirectories with media files -- a few, but not many are attached to legacy at this point. Am I correct in thinking this is what is being discussed - the picture files? When I attach a file to the picture gallery, for example, it will remain in the directory in which I originally put it. (These are divided into census records for each year, death records, birth records, photos, etc. The one problem that is happening is that the subdirectories are getting over filled with files (multiplying branches). I'm going to have to divide them further. Since I haven't gotten to the place where I've finished researching this line as far as possible in ancestry.com, I haven't attached many media files yet to legacy records. I don't multitask well, so am focusing on collecting the information which I will, hopefully soon, enter into my Legacy database. I'm hoping by the time I start adding the numerous multimedia files, I will have a more final version of the directory tree. Otherwise, there would be the necessity of repointing Legacy to new directories if I split files off into new subdirectories. I really don't want more on my primary drive than the system and progam files so wouldn't want to use any of the primary drive folders, but am I going to run into future problems with the way I am doing it? Does anyone have ideas that might be a better way of doing this while using a second drive? Hope this makes sense. Agreed. When I moved from XP to Windows 7, Legacy connected automatically even though the name of the folder where graphics were stored was different in Windows 7 from XP. Re: [LegacyUG] Any suggestions? Picture Gallery trouble in Master Source picture gallery - family bible TIF's
Bill, For example, in Family View in the row of icons below the parents' boxes within which there is a Picture Frame Icon, click this and one can add multiple pictures, but in common with all those linked one can only have one preferred. It is, of course, part of the Picture Gallery. Similarly, Sources have a Multimedia Tab through which one can add pictures and files (such as PDF, TXT etc.). The point I was making is that I find it much easier to add pictures etc. this way than visiting the Picture Gallery itself. Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ "William (Bill) R. Re: [LegacyUG] Ahnentafel Report
Howland Davis and Gene A, I agree with Howland that Legacy does *NOT* provide an Ahnentafel Report. At best, Legacy provides a semi-stripped down ancestor report which passes for an Ahnentafel Report. IMHO, an Ahnentafel Report simply provides the following: #1. My name #2. My father's name #3. My mother's name #4. My father's father's name #5. My father's mother's name #6. My mother's father's name #7. and on Legacy adds much more, such as information pertaining to the parents of each person above, generation numbers, spouses, and on. Howland wishes "to create a short Ahnentafel report in order to find my first unknown ancestor ." I would like to do that for my family also, but the Legacy report is *NOT* short, not concise, etc., as the generally accepted Ahnentafel Report is. Yup, it could be only one picture that causes the problem. I linked over 25 pics to one individual, most of them larger TIFs, and that Picture Gallery is always slower to load than the one with over 25 pics in JPG with a file size of 150-200 KB.. That file size is more than adequate for using in printed books. Re: [LegacyUG] Any suggestions? Picture Gallery trouble in Master Source picture gallery - family bible TIF's
Bill, I am not attempting to assist with the details of the use of the Picture Gallery because I do not use it. I use the Picture Icons on the various screens. For example, I must have at least 15000 images attached to my Sources and I have no problems. Whether you continue trying the Picture Gallery, or try other ways is your choice, personally I would have given up ages ago :-). However, you were wise to move from using TIF to JPG, as the former is really only designed for storage and quality printing. Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ "William (Bill) R. Re: [LegacyUG] SURVEY: What is the highest number of pictures you have in any one Picture Gallery?
How much memory do you have on your computer? Which version of Windows do you have? You need a minimum of 2 MB if you have Windows 7 - it's better with 4 MB. Do you have other programs running in the background when going into the Picture Gallery? When was the last time you defragged your computer? I'd recommend that you do that - it should be under Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools. Run File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair on the Family File (back up first - File > Backup Family FIle). Legacy needs time to create the thumbnails. If your pictures are a large file size (how big are the JPG files?), it can slow down the process. Most people only run into problems when they have too many TIF files linked or large jpgs. Re: [LegacyUG] SURVEY: What is the highest number of pictures you have in any one Picture Gallery?
Morris, thanks. I have only about 100 picture files so far. They are a mix of JPG, TIF and PDF. I am exploring the possibility that it may be the total number on pictures in one-single gallery that causes my trouble. What is the maximum number of pictures you have in any one single gallery? This is the number of pictures that Legacy attempts to re-size and present in "wallet size" on the screen when you open the picture gallery. If you have only half dozen or less pictures in anyone single gallery, you may not have hit the problem I am having. It is also possible that I am the only one with the problem. However, you have so many pictures that you must have some galleries with a high count of pictures. Re: [LegacyUG] Any suggestions? Picture Gallery trouble in Master Source picture gallery - family bible TIF's
Ron, thanks. That is a good point about the the source images I have stored in the Legacy/pictures folder not actually being in Legacy. I think that Legacy may read and render those images in Legacy/pictures so that it can present the small pictures in the gallery. In my case that is 13 small pictures displayed in rows of 5 each. I am guessing that Legacy may be using some temporary files on disk for working storage when resizing the images for presentation in gallery format on the screen. I think something degrades in the end-to-end image processing that causes the gallery feature of Legacy to eventually get stuck consuming high amounts of CPU indefinitely after some threshold of picture count is reached in the picture gallery. Then after deleting that threshold picture from the gallery the CPU usage returns to 0%. There is always the chance that something is broken in only my computer. That is especially true if no one else has this problem. But I have not other symptoms of trouble on my machine. Since I am relatively new to Legacy, I may have done something that "broke" Legacy. But I don't know what that could be. This is very puzzling. Re: [LegacyUG] SURVEY: What is the highest number of pictures you have in any one Picture Gallery?
Hi Bill, The number of pics handled by Legacy is limitless. Legacy does not store or copy your pics in a separate database. Rather, Legacy links to your current pictures. That is why you have to tell it where the files are located. Legacy does provide a folder for pictures if you choose to save pictures in that file. However, it still links. I have my photos stored on dropbox. I have 7,160 jpg files stored in a file I have named Legacy Family Tree Pics. I have another file on dropbox named Legacy Docs with subfolders which contain about 1,500 pdf files of documents. I do not use Tiff files. I have converted them to jpg files. Try moving your Tiff files to your desktop. Then try to see if you have the same results without the Tiff files in your picture list. Morris From: William (Bill) R. Bill, Legacy does not "hold" any pictures at all, only the paths to where you have them stored. It seems probable that what you are seeing is a simple example of the bigger a database then the longer it takes to search. Ron Ferguson http://fergys.co.uk/ "William (Bill) R. Re: [LegacyUG] Any suggestions? Picture Gallery trouble in Master Source picture gallery - family bible TIF's
Further investigation today I found the following: These images are ONLY linked to a Master Source according to Multimedia List Report runs that I did on the new copy of my Legacy file. Therefore, I decided to add them to an individual to see if that would change the symptoms. In doing so I discovered the following: I clicked on the individual and clicked on pictures icon. I started adding the 13 TIFs one at a time. All was well until I got to adding the 9th TIF. The 9th addition put the CPU into that 35-45% range solid for 30 seconds before returning to 0% CPU usage. Then I added the 10th and CPU has been running at 35-45% utilization solid for the past 10+ minutes. The picture gallery flashes about every 6-7 seconds and briefly says "(not responding)" in the title bar after the picture gallery name. It appears that when I add large TIF's to picture gallery that at #9, in this case, it begins to use a lot of CPU for 30 seconds but recovers. When adding #10 it goes into a permanent looping state that flashes (not responding) every 6-7 seconds. FASTSTONE PHOTO RESIZER - good results As a result of the JPG suggestion I wanted to see just how much storage I could save by converting the images. As an aside: I used FastStone Photo Resizer to create JPEG-90's using the batch feature. It took 9 seconds to create the 13 JPGs. That reduced the size of the 13 images by 96%! Comparison of the resulting images appear to be very, very good. If enlarged to an extreme, I see a slight degradation in image quality. If forced to JPGs, I have found a tool that is free and works very well for converting batches of images quickly. RE: [LegacyUG] What is the best way to do this?
How about a compromise? C://genealogy I could put it in the root directory. I have MANY things that aren't linked to Legacy which means I have two complete sets of identical folders. My Documents is a relative folder (or Directory if using XP) and is unique to a computer. -- Richard Van Wasshnova On Sun, May 27, 2012 at 12:01 PM, Michele Lewis wrote: > Right now I have all of my genealogy photos and documents in the Legacy > Folder PICTURES (I had subfolders in there).
