Re: [LegacyUG] Future of my family file?

2012-06-24 Thread Anne Hollingshead
I have just run a text file to capture the text in my whole family file
then copied that into Word so that I could edit it easily.

It ran to 7000 pages and transferred reasonably quickly.

I have lost quite a lot of formatting but it is very readable.

I now intend to do my main family lines on PDF.

Sorry. I thought you were just trying to get Events (and accompanying
sources) from one file to another. I obviously don't understand the
complexity of what you're dealing with.

I hope you understand that the fields you can import through Merge are
optional. It can be just Events.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy split screen view on 2 monitors

2012-06-24 Thread Ian GARDENER
Thank you for your input but it fails to address the issue, it does not achieve
the required result. Copy and paste never came into it, at least not from me.

I DO NOT WANT TO/CANNOT IMPORT PEOPLE FOR REASONS OF MY OWN, I am dealing with
events only and perhaps sources, thousands & thousands of them and import/merge
is NOT an option as stated in my opening question. The simplest thing would be
if I could keep events open in one screen while working on someone in the other
screen, so I can transcribe & check as I go. Legacy does not allow this however
access database (legacy's engine) does, so I'm trying to find a way to make it
work in legacy too. Simple as that.

Being able to template events across different databases would be good (albeit
problematic under windows) as would running simultaneous versions of legacy but
none of these work in legacy windows, although all can be done in varying
degrees, in the access engine that is Legacy's heart.

I've tried it on a unix machine and all can be done there easily using
emulators too BUT my laptop does not run unix. I could do screen captures and
keep that open in one screen but it will nearly triple the time involved.

At this point the most helpful ideas are finding another program that can read
legacy files directly, accurately & completely so i can open that in one
screen/monitor while working legacy on the other, building a legacy compatible
reader (groan), accessing the legacy database tables directly (double groan) or
finding a way to shell legacy to run a second copy without installing a new
operating system. The last is looking as the most promising right now.

Ian

 Ian,

I think we must be talking at cross purposes here, I was under the
impression that you wanted the same DB opened twice. Using the
split screen you can copy/paste across. You can only do it one field at a
 time.

2012-06-24 Thread Laird
Hi JL,
This should work for you. You can still use the idea Brian suggested.

I just created a PDF Family Group Sheet of all of the marriages in my file.
There are 5,048 families and the PDF was 7,539 pages and 29.8 MB in size.

Next I created individual reports for everyone in my file. There are 13,864
individuals in my file and the PDF contained 32,767 pages and 315 MB in size.

I used a software printer driver which looks like a printer to Windows (and
Legacy) and creates a PDF file. I use free PDFCreator. There are many other
products available such as CutePDF.

In Legacy reports don't use Preview.
Use the Printer Setup button to select a PDF soft printer driver, in my case
PDFCreator.
Next click on the Print button and when prompted save the PDF file to your HDD
of your choice.

Ok, I've read it (for the fourth time) - Stop trying to copy and paste.
Go to Family View on both screens. Drag and drop 'John Smith' on the
right to 'John Smith' on the left.

Proceed through the screens:
Just The Individual Above, and anything else on the screen you're

Click Start Copy
Do what you want on next screens til you get to Merge.

Then keep all information on the left, as you want it, go to the Events

 Ian,

I think we must be talking at cross purposes here, I was under the
impression that you wanted the same DB opened twice. Using the split
screen you can copy/paste across. You can only do it one field at a time.

 Ian,

Legacy does not use the windows clipboard, but its own, which is why
you can only copy/paste into the same database.

 Yes Legacy is Access based.

Actually in this respect, it does not matter that Legacy is Access
based as the restrictions are the same for all well constructed databases.
They are there to stop the users corrupting their own files, and

No I’ve made it clear a few times that the issue is running different legacy

Brian,

Go to the following website and download the free program Revo uninstaller
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html Once
installed, first make sure you have saved all your Legacy data and then
using Revo, uninstall Legacy.
Once this is done you can then install the latest version of Legacy and use
your backup of Legacy to get going again, hopefully without the problems you
are now experiencing.

Regards,

Colin.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size

2012-06-24 Thread Brian Lehman
I took Ron's advice and installed Legacy again and the program was again
appearing in various program lists.
So I found Legacy in Revo Uninstaller and used the "Forced Uninstall"
feature and successfully removed Legacy,
Then Revo suggested to run a scan to remove the residuals of Legacy
after the uninstall.
Did that and I couldn't find Legacy anywhere. It was gone, finally!
(other than the files and folders that Sherry suggested to keep).
Now I downloaded a new and current copy of Legacy from the website and
restored my data from a back up.
All seems well with my data base and I have to re due some
customizations/personalizations, but not all.
My original problem involved Legacy screens not holding the size I set,
so time will tell if that problem is solved,
but at least I have a clean copy of Legacy and my data base restored.
Thanks to everyone for there advice,
Take Care,
Brian

Re: [LegacyUG] Future of my family file?

2012-06-24 Thread JLB
True, it does work with a smaller selection. Looks really good too with
the photos.

You're right, there is no way to tag marriages except one at a time. I
also have MRIN's in the User ID field (using LTools) so this would be a
quicker way of tagging.

It would make more sense to leave out people who are not married as that
creates a lot of duplicate records and it would shorten the report.

I tried to duplicate your problem with my personal file which has about
5,400 people. It only took 3810 pages so the file was created for me.
The final file size was only 7MB for my report. I tried again but this
time I added pictures, the file still was created.

You may be running into a file size limit for our PDF Creator. You may
have to make multiple files to get FGS reports for everyone in your
file. You can use a Focus Group or Tagging to define a sub set of your
file, create a PDF for that group then make another for the remainder.
Not as convenient as a single PDF file with everyone but still a way to
get everyone done. Looking at the options on the record selection screen
I see that you can create a report for all marriages with a certain tag.
I could not find a quick way to tag a group of MRINs however so you may
have to go through your entire Marriage List tagging each one manually.
If you set different tag numbers you could divide your file into three

[LegacyUG] Installing Legacy 7.5.0.200

2012-06-24 Thread RHS Consulting
I merely want to add the experience I gained with the installation of the
new Legacy 7.5.0.200 update. There really isn't much to tell. I downloaded
the updated version from the website and overinstalled it on top of my
existing version. It accepted it without any complications. The 89kb
Install.log file is also in place. All file folders and databases are in
place and functioning. Unless directed otherwise, I always overinstall
updates or upgrades. Occasionally, I am being told that the old version
needs to be uninstalled first. This requirement is usually being performed
automatically by the program. I am sorry to read about the many-facetted
problems our readers are experiencing. I am using XP Pro / SP3 on a
6-year-old custom-built machine with 4GB RAM and 2X350GB Drives.

Is your problem just that Legacy doesn't uninstall at all or that when
it uninstalls it leaves behind a few vestiges of its presence, such as
an entry in the Program List?

When the uninstall.log file is missing it will not uninstall at all.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy split screen view on 2 monitors

2012-06-24 Thread JLB
Why wouldn't merging work? Just merge what you want. I'm working with
exported files from a cousin's database. I'm dragging and dropping one
person at a time. That takes me to the merge window where I decide what
I want to add to my main database. If I only wanted the events I think I
could do that.

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy split screen view on 2 monitors

2012-06-24 Thread Ian GARDENER
Hi,

Tried option 1 (although not with paf, I'll try that), Export gedcom, import to
new program, but so far they all seem to lose event detail in the process. Even
though I have all export options on and all privacy off. Is there a program
that can directly import the legacy file?

Notepad works but cutting and pasting all text for thousands of events is
scary, my brain would freeze & I'll turn into a politician :)

Ian,

I can only think of two options for you:

1) download a "freebie" genealogy program (such as PAF) and export the "bad"
file to it...then you could run both Legacy and the freebie program next to one
another. Maybe another member could suggest some other freebie programs to use.

2) or have a program such as Notepad opened and copy from the bad file...paste
to Notepad...then cut and paste from there to your "good"
file.

Re: [LegacyUG] WHAT is REALLY the current build?????

2012-06-24 Thread Brian/Support
7.5.0.200 is the latest build. It was issued on 22 Jun 2012. If your
Legacy Home tab still does not show that an update is available click on
the Updates section title bar and have Legacy manually check for an update.

I don't understand you question -- can you be more specific? All you have to do
is edit the citation and click on the
"all references" option, if I understand you correctly.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size

2012-06-24 Thread Brian Lehman
Well I found Legacy listed in the Program list using Revo Uninstaller
and then I uninstalled legacy.
It is no longer listed in the Revo program list or the program list in
the control panel in Add/remove Programs.
However the Legacy folders, files, shortcuts, all of it, is still where
it was and opening, no media links have been broken,
data appears intact but not sure.
Legacy is not listed in any program list but is still operational.
I'm at a total loss as to how to uninstall Legacy.
I do have the original (several years old), Legacy install disk that I
purchased, if that helps.
Please advise,
Brian

If you edit the Master Source, when you save your changes you will be
asked if you want to apply the changes to all references to that Master
Source or whether you wish to create a new one. I presume you do not
wish to retain the original as well as the new one, so you would opt to
apply the changes.

However, you cannot do a mass insertion of the Source Details, these
will have to be added to each record where you have used the relevant
Master Source. Unfortunately, you cannot use the Source Clipboard to
copy only the Source Details so you can either enter the Detail as
required for each record or you can enter the Detail the first time,
copy the entire Citation to the Source Clipboard then paste it as
require, deleting the Master-Source-wthout-Source-Details version as you
go along.

Should you wish to retain the old Master Source for use at another time
do this: Make a small change to the Source List Name (such as adding
the word "temp". Click Save and opt to create a new Master Source. Now
open the original again and make all the changes you want so it becomes
the new Master Source and this time click Save and opt to apply the
changes. Now open the "temp" one again, delete the word "temp" from its
name and Save it again.

Re: [LegacyUG] Future of my family file?

2012-06-24 Thread Brian/Support
I have two suggestions:

1. You can create a set of Family Group Sheets (FGS) for everyone in
your file as a single PDF file. These will show each family group and
you can include FGS for individuals as well.

2. If you are not as concerned about linking the people in your file
into families you can also create Individual Reports for everyone in
your file as a PDF.

To select everyone in your file click the record selection button on the
report screen.

It is not quite true that these will not require a computer program, to
view the PDF files you need Adobe Reader or other programs that can read
a PDF file but you also need a program to read a .doc or .rtf file. The
only records that do not need a computer program are hard copy on paper.

Re: [LegacyUG] Changes of name

2012-06-24 Thread Brian/Support
You can add multiple names but you cannot attach a date or a date range
to these.

If you want to have the change appear in the person's chronology/reports
you could create a name change event which specifies when the person
adopted the new name.

Brian,

To fully uninstall Legacy, download Revo uninstaller (there is a free
version). Because you have a partial uninstall, you will need to reinstall
the latest version of Legacy before you can use Revo. i never use the
Windows uninstall option to remove unwanted programs. Windows has a habit
of leaving more garbage behind than what it removes.

Yes, I was aware of that, but I wasn't entirely clear from Brian's
description (must confess to not having read the entire thread) whether
or not some *some* uninstalling had taken place and only after that was
the install.log not present. I understand now that that is not the case.

Is your problem just that Legacy doesn't uninstall at all or that when

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size

2012-06-24 Thread Ron Ferguson
Brian,

Legacy recommend a way of doing this which if I remember correctly involves
deleting everything in your Legacy folder except your data file, and any usr
files you may wish to save.

I don't like this method, so it is not my recommendation and comes with a
health warning. Personally, I make changes in the Register first, but I am
not willing to publish this method, as changing the register can be
extremely damaging if not done properly.

Hopefully Legacy will jump in.

Hello List,

I downloaded the latest version .200 and now need to ask. Does anyone else have
this trouble? When I go to from the family to a particular child, and then
return to the family the child I looked, is then at the top of the list of the
children. So out of order of birth. I then tried to sort the order of children.
It does not work. Only the child I looked at comes on the child list. I then
close Legacy, and reopen Legacy which seems to solve the problem?

Thank You,

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy split screen view on 2 monitors

2012-06-24 Thread Michel Lacoursiere
Hi Ian,

1) Yes,Legacy is Access based. Legacy is just the interface that allow you to
add,delete, update,view etc... the informations
in the Access database. A database for a Family file has 29 tables in the
latest update and a table like the Individual Records
table has over 110 columns and as many rows as you have individuals in your
file.

2) For the Window Clipboard, Legacy is not different than any other Window
program. If you can highlight text, right click, Cut or Copy
you will be able to paste the content of the Window Clipboard into any field in
Legacy whether it comes from the same Family file, another
Family file or a completely different program (eg.text on a web page, text from
a text file, a cell from an Excel file etc...). The same
goes true for the reverse. If you highlight a field in Legacy then right click,
Copy you will be able to paste the content of the field
into any program that accept it or any other field in Legacy if you do not go
over the number of characters limit of the field.

If you are having problems with Copy/Paste it is not related to Legacy there
must be something in your dual screen setting
that is not correct. I might be able to help you more later this week since I
intend to go dual screen too.

Regards,

Michel Lacoursiere
lacoume...@yahoo.com

Hi,

No matter what i do, I cannot cut and paste from one file to another.  I can
copy/paste within the same file but not using two different files. Specifically:

On the let screen/split I have myself open in the new database, on the right
screen I have myself open in the old database.
In the right screen I open up details, open an event, then copy it to the
clipboard. I then close that screen (have to to proceed), click on the left
database and the clipboard in now empty. It doesn’t matter wether I save or
cancel in the old database, the result applies, “THE EVENT CLIPBOARD IS EMPTY”.

So I set up two new databases in split screen and tried the same thing, same
result. The clipboard does not hold data once I click on the different file in
the other screen. Someone mentioned access (is Legacy accessdb based?). So in
access database I tried essentially the same thing and same result.

Hi Brian,

Since the latest Legacy update is now 7.5.0.200 download this last update.
If you can't uninstall Legacy because the Install.Log file is missing or is
corrupted downloading the latest update will create a new Install.Log file
if it is missing or overwrite an existing one if it is corrupted.
( BTW, "Uninstall Legacy 7.0","Uninstall Legacy 7.4" and  "Uninstall Legacy 7.5"
are only shortcut to the UNWISE.exe file wich is the file that allow you to
uninstall
Legacy.)

For the Legacy2.usr file which is giving  you problems just go to your Legacy
folder and delete it. When opening Legacy a new Legacy2.usr file will be create
with the defaults setting, you will have to reset the personnal setting that the
file was holding.

Ian,

I can only think of two options for you:

1) download a "freebie" genealogy program (such as PAF) and export the
"bad" file to it...then you could run both Legacy and the freebie
program next to one another. Maybe another member could suggest some
other freebie programs to use.

2) or have a program such as Notepad opened and copy from the bad
file...paste to Notepad...then cut and paste from there to your "good"
file.

MessageIan,

Legacy does not use the windows clipboard, but its own, which is why you can
only copy/paste into the same database.

Yes Legacy is Access based.

Actually in this respect, it does not matter that Legacy is Access based as the
restrictions are the same for all well constructed databases. They are there to
stop the users corrupting their own files, and should be welcomed.

We must be talking past each other, because I often use this method within a
single file and between different files in a split screen. The only requirement
is that you "save" the individual information as it currently is, regardless
of when it was entered. That saved information becomes a template from which
you can use any piece of information you wish, in any database. I don't know if
Legacy remembers the last one saved when it is closed - it very well could. I
have 2 files that I record current happenings in, identically in both, and I
call up split screen, enter the personal information in one database, save it,
then go to the other database and copy each newly entered information by
clicking on the field name. Is that how you are trying to use this method?

The nearest you will get to that is to use Smelter as a Quoted Given
Name, ie enter his forenames as Bernard William Smelter Joseph "Smelter."

In Report Options select "Use quoted names for narratives" and "Remove
quoted given names" and the first mention of him in a report will be as
"Bernard William Smelter Joseph Young" with a note that he was "usually
known Smelter" and thereafter he will be referred to as Smelter.

You need to read the top of the section you are looking at to see what
screen they are talking about. In the case of sorting children by date
of birth, that whole section commences with

"Editing Children

To reach the Child List, right-click on a child's name from either the

[LegacyUG] Changes of name

2012-06-24 Thread Tony Rolfe
No I'm not!

I'm asking if Legacy can allow me to enter multiple names for a person
and specify date ranges for which these names can be used.

Not a hard thing to do but, I suspect, not currently possible.

Tony

I think the only way you could do this is to do a Multiple Lines of
Descent Report. You would need to find the MRIN of every couple/person
at the top end of every line and enter them in the order you want the
lines to appear in your Report.

RE: [LegacyUG] Future of my family file?

2012-06-24 Thread Alan Pereira
Why a report, why not your whole file via gedcom export.
Take a look at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
The "Submit Your Family Tree To WorldConnect" on the right hand side.
You own the data and you decide what to show and you can remove the data.
The upload and publish will produce 4 views
Index of names
Pedigree
Ahnentafel
Descendancy

If you do choose this option, be careful of what you publish (I suppress source
Repository as it contains names and addresses of living individuals as well as
contact details). You have the option after uploading to review your
information before publishing as well as taking it offline after publishing or
just deleting the tree.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Future of my family file?

I would like to be able to create some sort of Report, e.g. .DOC or .RTF of the
whole of my family file, so that when I depart this life, there would be some
sort of readable documentation of everyone in my family (file). Not just my
paternal line but everyone, including all the people around the world that are
connected in some way to my family.

By doing this I can leave my family history recorded, without a computer
program needed to see the file.

Is this possible, if so, where would I start? And with whom would I start with?

On my maternal side of the family I have been able to trace back into the
Scottish kings, via a female line and on my paternal line I have been able to
get back, via a female line, to King Alfred and further back still, just
following the line of his. My whole database amounts to 11,314 people, plus
over 1000 Pictures.

I realise this would amount to probably well in excess of 2000 pages, which I
would not print out or even edit - I would leave that to some one else in the
future But at least they would have all the information. I would save it
all to a CD/DVD to distribute to various people/libraries around the world etc.

'Fraid not! What you're asking is for a database program to write your Family
History for you.
