Ian,

In Family View, say you have the default Death Cause as a core event, click on
it, choose Customise, and then you can select what field you want to display
from a drop down list activated by clicking on the button next to the Death
Cause.

Is that what you wanted?

Hi,

I seem to recall reading (some time ago) that there is a way to show a person’s
current age in family view and I “think” age at death if not living.
I’ve searched the help file without success. Am I correct or has this old brain
let me down again?

The only place a person's age is shown, whether still living or not,
is on the individual's screen as far as I know.

If the person has died, it gives their age at death but their overall
age still keeps increasing year on year.

If I understand correctly (and that's not guaranteed since I am very
tired right now), you would like to have a field in the family view
for the person's age or to have it appear beside the person's name or
data as it does in the individual screen?

this best achieved in Legacy?

If I input a spouse it demands that it be male.

They are not actually married as its not legal here but I cannot even show them

Second question- she has had three surnames. Her birth name, her acquired

Pity there’s no way to make individual notes against each surname.

Judith,

Glad to hear that everything is now back to normal. Your experiences
emphasise far more than an instruction book could, the importance of
regularly doing PC housekeeping.

Often we see comments, or recommendations to switch the PC off, leave it for
a short while, and switch on again in order to resolve a problem. I know
because I make such suggestions myself! But it should also be taken as an
indication that the PC is becoming full of garbage, and a good clean up is
needed.

I hope other users will take note.

I seem to recollect that when a file is imported from a same sex
relationship, the sexes are retained. I cannot be certain, but I would think
that if the two people are exported to a GEDCOM, the sex of one changed in
Notepad, then use the GEDCOM to replace the Legacy records, then this may
work.

I emphasise that I am uncertain about this, but it can do no harm to try!

I wouldn't want to see Legacy changed in such a way that same sex
relationships were regarded at the norm. Perhaps Partner 1 and
Partner 2 could be the normal with options to customise with
Male/Female, Husband/Wife, etc. This could also cover relationships
where a male/female couple aren't/don't marry but the date on which
they got together to form a family unit is wanted. I know there is a
box that can be checked to indicate a couple didn't marry but it isn't
immediately obvious they didn't, esp if a date is also included.
There's also the instances where there's an illegitimate child and an
alleged father.

Something else I would like to see is the dropping of Unknown for
the father where a child is illegitimate together with the indication
the mother had had a relationship with the child's father.

Rather than include all the various options as standard and thus
making Legacy ungainly and bloated, it might be better (from my point
of view) to simplify it but allow customisation.

I am having trouble with a multimedia backup. I have been using Legacy

 using Windows 7.

The data backup proceeds normally. The multimedia backup proceeds for
awhile and then stops and I receive this message: Backup Error 506:
 Cannot write to Temp File.

I have performed all the standard fixes. I have done the File
 Maintenance/Check Repair/Compact File. I have rebooted the computer. I
have defragged. I have cleaned the registry. I have tried different
backup locations. I normally backup to an external hard drive. It
shows 297GB Capacity, used space 49.2GB and 248GB Free Space. I also
tried backing up to my computer hard drive.

The backup stops on different files each time.

I went to the archives and searched for anything related to this error
and cannot find anything. I also cannot find this Error number on the
 Legacy List of Error messages.

This problem started about 3 weeks ago. The only thing that has changed
since then is an update to my Norton 360. I even tried disabling the
firewall and doing the backup. Still the same problem.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there something I haven't tried?

You indicate that there is plenty of free space on the external drive to
which you are backing up, but the temporary files are probably written
to your main (C:) drive where Windows is installed. How much space is
there on that?

If there's plenty then I can't help you any further!

as the latest, and last few, versions eat up RAM. I would also run Task
Manager (ctrl+alt+del) immediately after start up to see if there are any
clues there. Also check the programs which are opening at start-up, you may
find some have decided that they have a right to be there, even if you don't!

Problem is slow startup for Legacy update 201. As of yesterday, 7-7,
it’s taking a full minute to open. Any thoughts? Microsoft Word is
also slow to open, but none of the other Microsoft applications are,
 Excel opens
instantly. Word is always open when using Legacy, if this helps. I’m

RE: [LegacyUG] Same sex marriage and other non standard relationships.

2012-07-09 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
Here is what I do for same sex relationships. It's not perfect but it
helps.

I enter the same sex partner as the spouse, which of course makes that partner
the wrong sex, and then click on marriage information and then click on the
Wording Options tab. From there you can at least change the labels in the
Family View to whatever you wish Female and Female...Female and Same
Sex PartnerWife and Wife, etc.

Hope this helps.

Ian, I wholeheartedly support you in that Legacy needs to be
forward thinking in including today’s society and not
yesterday’s. I have many friends who are gay and have been living
with their partners for many years that we no longer bat an eyelid
to these things. One of those friends has been researching his
family history for over 30 years and it would be a real shame if he
came across Legacy (I’m sure others have) and finds that it
doesn’t support same sex relationships. If the Government accept
civil marriages, I’m sure designers and programmers at Legacy are
 too! ☺

Do you have Legacy installed to the default c:\Legacy folder?
Windows7 won't let the program write ot the temp folder if you have
Legacy installed to the Program Files folder.

If you have Legacy installed correctly, go to Options Customize
Locations and make sure the Location of temporary files shows
c:\Legacy\Temp. If it doesn't click on the Reset button on the

[LegacyUG] Relationship calculator and Set Relationships do not complete

Four weeks ago, I converted from V 6.0 Deluxe to 7.5 Deluxe. My main

weeks, I have made over 780 modifications to my database. I need to know if
Legacy 7.5 can handle relationships or not before I go on. I don't mind
going back to V 6.0.0.190 and retyping my 780 records but I need to know now
if that is what I have to do.

Any help and comments from users with similar experience would be greatly

[LegacyUG] Age on the family view?

2012-07-09 Thread RHS Consulting
Michele ...

Your directions are fine, but how do you input information into your preferred
settings? The 4 default settings on the Individual's Information page (Born,
Bapt, Died, Buried) cannot be changed, thus there is no way to input anything

 From the Help File:

 Age Information

Along the right side of the Information screen, at the end of the Born, Chr,
Died, and Buried lines, age numbers are displayed. The number for the Born
field is the number of years ago the person was born. The other values
represent the age at which the event occurred. (If the Born age bothers you,

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship calculator and Set Relationships do not complete

2012-07-09 Thread Sherry/Support
You might check to see how many relationships you have selected to calcuate

10 is generally more than sufficient for blood and 5 for non-blood
unless you have a lot of royals or other intermingled marriages.

Too many relationships in the selection can slow the process down.

Also, back up the Family File (File Backup Family File) and run File
FIle Maintenance Check/Repair before setting or calculating the
relationships.

I think this question has been answered ad nauseam but I'll try too.

Right-click in the Family View box for any individual, over to the left
of where it says Born/Chr/Died/Buried or whatever you've got there. This
will bring up a window called Customize Display. Choose which factors
you want showing on the Family View by clicking on the little box of
... Scroll down to where it says 'Age at Death' for one of your
choices. Repeat with the other '...' boxes. There's room for five
choices altogether.

Re: [LegacyUG] Keeping records of online research

Thanks, Charani,

There are several things I don't understand -- How do you use the History
list?? I see no way to enter info in it.

Also when I looked up History List in the Help Index, I was told:
To reach the *History* list, click the *small down arrow* between the *Back
* and *Frwd* buttons on the left side of the Toolbar.

I had no trouble finding the small down arrow to the right of the *Back
button/Arrow, *and no trouble accessing the History List,* *but I don't
see the *Frwd* button/arrow they referred to.

Michele,

Can you be more specific bout how you enter searches in your research
notes. For example, if you look up 10 different individuals named Smith,
do you enter the search you did for each of the ten in each of their
individual research notes section? How do you keep track of what you still
need to do?
.
Thanks,
Pat

I use the history to keep track of where I've got to, deleting any

I also have hardcopies of census data on which I scribble notes and

I have over 230,000 in my main Legacy database and I set relationships
regularly for different people in the file. Works fine. Perhaps you have a
few people with circular relationships (they are their own descendant). I
usually set the non-blood relationships to zero and the blood relationships to
5. It takes about 2 minutes and 35 seconds. While working the counter shows
just above the Set Relationships button. Does your counter show any activity
or is it stalled at some point?

[LegacyUG] Age on the family view?

2012-07-09 Thread RHS Consulting
Somehow my concern is being bypassed. I fully understand what you are all
talking about, and I have tried it and it works. Here is what I would like to
know. There are a great many entries (called Field Names) in the Customize
Display list. All of these Field Names require input. Where does this input
come from, where is it located, and how does it get into Family View? Outside
of the 4 default listings on the Individual's Information page (Born, Bapt,
Died, Buried) into which information can be inputted, I am trying to find out
how to input information into any of the other Field Names and then put the
Field Name (up to 5) with the inputted information into Family View. Someone
please help me. Thanks !!!

I wouldn't want to see Legacy changed in such a way that same sex relationships
were regarded at the norm. Perhaps Partner 1 and Partner 2 could be the
normal with options to customise with Male/Female, Husband/Wife, etc. This
could also cover relationships where a male/female couple aren't/don't marry
but the date on which they got together to form a family unit is wanted. I
know there is a box that can be checked to indicate a couple didn't marry but
it isn't immediately obvious they didn't, esp if a date is also included.
There's also the instances where there's an illegitimate child and an alleged
father.

Something else I would like to see is the dropping of Unknown for the father
where a child is illegitimate together with the indication the mother had had a
relationship with the child's father.

Rather than include all the various options as standard and thus making Legacy
ungainly and bloated, it might be better (from my point of view) to simplify it
but allow customisation.

but the date on which they got together to form a family unit is wanted. I
know there is a box that can be checked to indicate a couple didn't marry but
it isn't immediately obvious they didn't, esp if a date is also included.
There's also the instances where there's an illegitimate child and an alleged
father.

Something else I would like to see is the dropping of Unknown for the father
where a child is illegitimate together with the indication the mother had had a
relationship with the child's father.

Rather than include all the various options as standard and thus making Legacy

I seem to recollect that when a file is imported from a same sex relationship,
the sexes are retained. I cannot be certain, but I would think that if the two
people are exported to a GEDCOM, the sex of one changed in Notepad, then use
the GEDCOM to replace the Legacy records, then this may work.

I emphasise that I am uncertain about this, but it can do no harm to try!

Hi,

I’ve come across a living relative who would like to be included in the
family tree, she is openly gay would like her life partner acknowledged too.
How is this best achieved in Legacy?

If I input a spouse it demands that it be male.

They are not actually married as its not legal here but I cannot even show them
as defacto. For the sake of the question assume they DO have a child (I’m not
sure yet).

Second question- she has had three surnames. Her birth name, her acquired

order these correctly?
Pity there’s no way to make individual notes against each surname.

I think it needs to default to normal lines as is, ie male husband female

I wouldn't want to see Legacy changed in such a way that same sex relationships

Click the dotdotdot box next to each field name. Choose one from the

You can change the default settings when you are in Family View. Right
click on one of the settings, like Born. A Customize Display page pops
up on which you can change any or all of them. Be careful changing
though; your change change what is displayed for everyone in your file.

Your directions are fine, but how do you input information into your
preferred settings? The 4 default settings on the Individual's
Information page (Born, Bapt, Died, Buried) cannot be changed, thus
there is no way to input anything different except Age (which is
calculated by Legacy). How/where would you input information into all
the entries from the Customize Family View Display?

With the Family View on your screen, RIGHT click the labels on the left
side of the data of either person on the screen (born, died, whatever is
there). The Customize Display box will pop up. Here is where you can
tell Legacy what you want to show on the family view. You can have 5

As you click on each person in the family, so their name is added to

The only time a name doesn't appear is when I use the Add a new son

other data, then that person will appear in the history list.

Just having the name of the person acts as an aide memoire. When I've
added all I can, then I delete the name from the history list.

The Fwrd button is to the right of the small down arrow - unless
you've customised the toolbar and taken it out or not added it. I've
customised my toolbar so I'm not sure what was originally there.

If you have no Fwrd button, right click in a blank space and you'll
find all the options you can have.

RE: [LegacyUG] Same sex marriage.

2012-07-09 Thread Michele Lewis
I know my point of view will not be popular but I don't record any gay
relationships in my Legacy file. I would be one of those religious freaks :)
My husband does have a cousin that is openly gay. In my file he is listed as
never married. I think Legacy doesn't allow same sex marriages because of
their ties to the LDS church (I am not LDS but I do agree with them on this
one).

RE: [LegacyUG] Relationship calculator and Set Relationships do not complete

2012-07-09 Thread Jacques E Decarie
Hi Ron,

Thank you very much for the feedback.

I use the same input on my old computer running V6.0 and (identical
converted fdb) on the new computer running V7.5. Operations complete in a
few seconds on V6.0 and hundreds of relationship are identified. So there
are no loops in the file. And yes there is plenty of activity in the
computer ; Legacy issues over 30 000 000 000 bytes in i/o operations while
doing the relationship calculations.

In the meantime, I received a message from Jim, Technical Support, Legacy
Family Tree, stating that :

This problem has been reported by other users. It was logged for the
programmers' attention as issue 3699 Incomplete relationship calculations.
A future update may contain the solution. I regret that I do not have a
work-around for it. Thank you for taking the time to report this problem.
Your efforts will help improve Legacy and make it a better program.

I am pretty sure they will eventually figure out what is going on but, I
have no choice, I am going back to V6.

I held back several months before going to V7.5, especially to avoid this
kind of unfortunate problems. Just whish the Legacy team would make
available a list of known bugs (or known issues) before they let us convert.

Thanks again Ron,

Sincerely,

Jacques

I have over 230,000 in my main Legacy database and I set relationships
regularly for different people in the file. Works fine. Perhaps you have a
few people with circular relationships (they are their own descendant). I
usually set the non-blood relationships to zero and the blood relationships
to 5. It takes about 2 minutes and 35 seconds. While working the counter
shows just above the Set Relationships button. Does your counter show any
activity or is it stalled at some point?

You might check to see how many

relationships you have selected to calcuate

10 is generally more than sufficient for blood and 5 for

 non-blood

unless you have a lot of royals or other intermingled

 marriages.

Too many relationships in the selection can slow the process

 down.

Also, back up the Family File (File Backup Family File)

Michelle,

That is you perrogative if you choose not to list gay marriages.
However, I strongly feel that it should be an option for those who
choose otherwise. I am gay. My partner and I have been together for
39 years. I would love to be able to combine our genealogy into one
file.

On a side note, the new Heredis has chosen to use the title of Partner
rather then Husband/Wife. Also their software does not refuse to let
you choose two Ms or two Fs. They are not making a statement for or
against gay unions. They are giving the user the ability to choose how
to record their information.

For what it's worth, referring to genealogical standard's it matters not what
I think. For accuracy, all genealogists should record information as it was,
or is, in reality and *not* what we wish it to be. Therefore, we enter
information into Legacy Family Tree accordingly, even it that involves
workarounds. I agree with flexibility in all programs, however, in all fairness
to Legacy Family Tree an all of its programmers, no program can possibly meet
100 percent of everyone's wishes.

There is *no* way to show current age on the Family View. You can
only show Age at Death.

Age at Death is calculated by Legacy based on the birth or christening

RE: [LegacyUG] Age on the family view?

2012-07-09 Thread Ian GARDENER
Interesting. In looking for the display age option (which I'm sure now must
have been a different program as it displayed always), I tried the relationship
field and it simply remained blank so it's not automatically filled by default.
For there to be a relationship there has to be a core person to calculate this
back to. I imagine this will be in options somewhere and requires setting but
to say it will be auto automatically filled may just confuse things a little.
Actually just how is it accessed?

There are places all over Legacy where you can input information. Apart from
the straightforward Names, Birth, Baptism etc which appear by default on the
Individual's Information screen there are inputs for various fields in the
Events/Facts section, there are several Notes fields - on the Marriage Screen,
behind an icon on the Family or Individual Info views, behind the + signs next
to the BMD fields, there are several address fields - Event, Mailing and
Repository which are accessed from the + signs, or from icons or from the
Source screens. In addition, there are various fields which are calculated by
Legacy and which do not have to be input by you, such as Relationship or
Soundex Code.

If you add, for argument's sake, the Relationship field to the Family view,
Legacy will fill this for you automatically. If you add, say, the Cause of
Death field, you will need to click on a person's Notes icon, select the
Medical Tab and enter the Cause of Death in that field.

RE: [LegacyUG] Same sex marriage.

2012-07-09 Thread Ian GARDENER
Actually if not specifically asked by this person, I wouldn't be either I'm
totally non religious:)

In this case there are no children I have now found out so really to me, I
could leave this partner out except for being asked. Having said that though,
wether you I approve or not, the fact is that the world is changing around us
and not always for the better. If we are to record the facts and if government
allow civil unions, then we need to be able to record it.

In the short term I have adopted the marriage event rewording option and
instead of husband and wife I've called them female and female, then marked no
children and never married. However as this becomes more commonplace which it
inevitably will, a better solution needs to be found. I can see where there may
be a temptation to totally ignore such relationships at both user programmer
level as there's a strong argument against normalising some behaviours. But as
researchers we need to be careful not to overly bias our work.

Alas in my research it seems that I constantly move from one brick wall to the
next. I'm also one of these dreamers who hopes one of my descendants somewhere
will pick up my research one day and I simply cannot bring myself to
deliberately leave a brick wall for them.

Ah for the good old days.

It is Legacy's prerogative and I respect that. I will point out that in
some areas of the county - and I live in one - it is now a legal
standard. Here its not even a civil union. It is recognized by the state
as a marriage. As someone doing the family history, I believe I must
remain true to the history. They will appear as marriages in my gen if
they are considered marriages in the places where the ceremony was
performed. Civil unions in others.

Re: [LegacyUG] Same sex marriage.

2012-07-09 Thread Brian/Support
During one of the discussions on this topic several years ago the
programmers said that they just never considered same sex relationships.
Their LDS beliefs had no bearing at the time. As they wrote Legacy many
decisions on optimizing searches and other features in the code are
based on heterosexual couples. Going back and redoing all that code to
work with same sex unions would be a major undertaking that they were
not prepared to do at the time.

Since they keep their plans for new features secret until they are ready
for testing I do not know if they have any plans to revise Legacy to
accept same sex unions.

RE: [LegacyUG] Same sex marriage.

2012-07-09 Thread Ian GARDENER
Allowing an option to change a field label requires very little programming.
Report options as I've just discovered can be handled on an ad hoc basis for
each individual case by using the rewording override. My mate just did it in
access (albeit without any nice user front end), in less than 15 minutes. The
database rebuild didn't change it either. Food for thought.

-

For the record, I am not a supporter of gay unions or homosexuality being
treated as a norm (that's my belief regardless of public opinion and yes I even
have a gay friend although hetro myself), I am however strongly in favour of
abiding by genealogical standards and rules of evidence where possible.

The discussion is about the program being able to do the job it is sold for.
Religion or personal belief has no part in the discussion. I'm going to submit
the suggestion as others before me must have done and bow out of this thread
which I started as a how to question, not a religious or political one.

Everyone have a nice day and enjoy doing what makes you happy. Let your

During one of the discussions on this topic several years ago the programmers
said that they just never considered same sex relationships.
Their LDS beliefs had no bearing at the time. As they wrote Legacy many
decisions on optimizing searches and other features in the code are based on
heterosexual couples. Going back and redoing all that code to work with same
sex unions would be a major undertaking that they were not prepared to do at
the time.

Since they keep their plans for new features secret until they are ready for
testing I do not know if they have any plans to revise Legacy to accept same
sex unions.

Re: [LegacyUG] Same sex marriage.

2012-07-09 Thread Ellen
Genealogy works with bloodlines. There are no bloodlines in same-sex
relationships. If there are any children, then the sperm and egg donors should
be noted if they are in your family, not the one giving birth if different from
sperm and egg donor because that is where the bloodline comes from. If
genealogy gets too caught up in these societal downturns, then we will one day
be working with even more confusing things like beastiality and such. I know
of one distant relative who doesn't want his prior marriages listed because his
current wife will get upset. I'm listing them once I get the info anyway.
There are some relatives who have had children from affairs that may be hearsay
or are not publicly known and I won't be the one to publicize it. There are
times when you need to use your head and follow logical requests and not follow
others.

God bless,
Ellen

though, wether you I approve or not, the fact is that the world is changing
around us and not always for the better. If we are to record the facts and if
government allow civil unions, then we need to be able to record it.

In the short term I have adopted the marriage event rewording option and
instead of husband and wife I've called them female and female, then marked
no children and never married. However as this becomes more commonplace which
it inevitably will, a better solution needs to be found. I can see where
there may be a temptation to totally ignore such relationships at both user
programmer level as there's a strong argument against normalising some
behaviours. But as researchers we need to be careful not to overly bias our
 work.

Alas in my research it seems that I constantly move from one brick wall to
the next. I'm also one of these dreamers who hopes one of my descendants

to deliberately leave a brick wall for them.

them on this one).

You must find and verify the facts yourself.

RE: [LegacyUG] Same sex marriage.

2012-07-09 Thread Ian GARDENER
EXCACTLY I'm with you and Legacy is a Family Tree program active marketed as
being the tool for genealogy and family history, not a thoroughbred bloodline
database. Can't see how you accurately do family history if the program will
not accept the facts. I decry the gay lifestyle but it IS A FACT. I didn't like
Hiroshima or Negasaki either but I don't refuse to acknowledge it because I
don't like it.

If Legacy is to be a religious research tool then so be it but I've never seen
it marketed as such.

Seems we have genealogists family historians in one corner and religious
tracers of bloodlines in the other.

What will be will be.

BTW Thanks for the tip Rita in South Carolina, yours was one of the few replies
that actually dealt with the question and I've adopted your suggestion.

I suppose I could always relabel it to unacceptable fact (tongue in
ckeek)..:

I disagree that it's your purview to decide when a thread should end. I
don't mind that you changed the title of it though. It's possible the
Legacy staff would find this discussion quite useful in making their own
determinations. I've found it quite interesting although nauseating at
times as I'm not on the 'religious' side whatsoever. And, Ian, there's
no such thing as a 'gay lifestyle' just homosexual or other-sexual people.

Genealogy or family history. I hadn't thought about it that way before.
So I guess 'genealogy' means I should get busy recording the babies born
through rape. (Pure bloodlines! biological on at least one side ... )

And 'family history' means picking and choosing what you please?

OK now I'm totally confused.

I still think that's a decision you make at the outsetare you doing
family history or genealogy...although I admit that I have changed my
mind sometimes when the family history becomes particularly intriguing.
I also tend to change my mind on the subject when I find many
intermarriages between familiesthen I just CAN'T resist the
temptation to find out more...It is family history AND genealogy in my
case...and I rather enjoy the sounds of the skeletons hanging in the closet

I was just thinking along the same lines. How do you record the
child(ren) of a heterosexual couple who used a sperm donor? No different
Than how you would record the child(ren) of gay couples. One of the
 parents is not biological.
Certainly I have adopted children in my database. Probably within my
lifetime they will marry and there's no bloodlines there at all. Should
I stop recording at that point? Should I kick them out right now because
they're mucking up the 'purity' of my bloodlines?
