RE: [LegacyUG] What to do with genealogical files after death of compi ler

2012-10-10 Thread David C Abernathy
You need to include ALL account names and passwords for accessing the computer
itself, any monies accounts, data and etc.
I have helped way to many widowed persons access their deceased spouse's data
that was passworded.
Hacking is not always fun, but in cases like tis it is needed to be done.

Having also written User Guides called READ ME files, about a dozen to cover
everything computer related, including Legacy and the ancestors of course,
there's another essential part to this. That's the cover letter that you
actually print and put somewhere easily accessible. (In my case, in an envelope
tacked to my bulletin board and addressed to my
executor.)

All READ ME's and cover letter updated on a regular basis as my
computer/finances/etc. change. If you're counting on someone actually turning
your computer on to see what's in there ... well, they might not. And if they
do, chances are they could use some clear direction.

Or as the Chinese say, One who's all over the map is no less lost than one
without a map.

This is (or should be!) a concern of all of us who spend a 'lifetime'
researching. Just so happens I've been doing this very thing for my family -
what to do when the time comes I'm either gone or incapacitated so as not to be
'with it'.
I've prepared a couple of 'user guides "A User Guide of" (my Computer--how to
get onto it, what's on it, general organization etc; and A User Guide of my
Genealogy--how it's organized, what each folder contains, etc). Have taken
screen shots along with a narrative in a WORD document to try and explain at
least the basics.
Even if you donate your work to a society/library, unless they have a skilled
IT specialists on staff (probably unlikely unless a major society/library) that
understands computer technology we use they won't have a clue as to what
they've got NOR how to access the treasure that they've inherited. Without some
kind of 'guide' for them you might as well pitch it - which the family may do
anyway!
If you're interested in more details, please feel free to contact me off list.

The Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne is happy to receive donations of
genealogical records (paper or electronic) regarding deceased individuals.
Also, local genealogical or historical societies may want such records. Emily

Select your person, e.g. yourself, go to Tools - Set Relationship,
then everyone in your database will have how they are related to you
in the gap between yourself and your parents. There is a little

Re: [LegacyUG] relationships

2012-10-10 Thread Wendy Howard
Tools > Set Relationships

Note that you can change the starting person, you don't have to navigate
to that person first.

Consider the options available, then click on Set Relationships and wait
while it does its thing.

When it's done, the relationship of the husband and wife to the starting
person will show above the husband and wife boxes in Family View.

You can change this whenever you like - I often switch between myself
and my husband as the starting person, depending on which area of the
tree I'm looking at.

Note that these relationships are not updated as you add more people -
you need to run Set Relationships again to update this.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

[LegacyUG] Centering of Descendant Chart

2012-10-10 Thread RHS Consulting
To: Sherry/Support

Thanks for the page break information. I will think about it. The cost of
packing (rolling up) and shipping large charts also
needs to be considered.

My standard (horizontal) descendant chart is not centered. The boxes all start
in the upper left corner and work themselves down
towards the middle. I would like to see my first entry on top but in the
middle of the chart. Is there such a centering setting?

I would like to see a "Males Only" and a "Downward" Ancestor Chart as well as
an "Upward" and a "Downward" Descendant Chart. Any
chances?

Can chart boxes be sized individually in a customized fashion with vertical and
horizontal adjustments? I see a lot of empty,
unused space in my boxes? In some programs, the chart boxes auto-adjust. Any
chances with Legacy?

Richard

[LegacyUG] Report Output to Spreadsheet

I would like to sort a file containing about 700 records produced by tagging
people in Legacy using a spreadsheet program. Is there a way to get the

have saved it as a .pdf file, and then converted that to Excel, but that
resulted in 42 separate sheets. I want to end up with everything on one

After the mess in the launch of Legacy 6.0 I thought that it would never
happen again! I bought Legacy 7.0 as soon as it came out, confident
that they had learned their lesson. But I still don't have the courage
to install 7.0 and I'm happily still using 6.0. It is very comforting
to know that, even though there are still bugs in it, they will never
again be breaking things that always worked perfectly well before they
broke them. I will probably not get around to using 7.0 until after 8.0
has been released and they stop messing up 7.0.

I am running Legacy 7.xxx on a computer running Win 7 Ultimate - 64 Bit. I
have not experienced any problems what so ever. 2 weeks ago my hard drive
gave up the ghost. After installing a new hard drive, I reinstalled all of
my software. I then restored my back up file(s) without any problems.

Use [couplenames] to have the names of the husband and wife included. Be
sure though that the report section is for a family. If you try that for

[LegacyUG] Report wording and use of [FullName]

2012-10-10 Thread Pat Hickin
In an ancestor, e.g., report, before listing the children, there is the
following wording:

 Children from their marriage were:

Rather than just using the pronoun "their," I want to put in the
*names*of the parents:

I know that in place of "their" I can insert [FullName] and it will give
the name of the father, but I want *both* parents.

So I tried:

Children from [FullName] and [FullName]'s marriage were:

But it just gave me the father's name twice!

Does anyone know how/whether I can get Legacy to insert the names of both
the father and the mother?

Thanks!

The source templates in GIL #110 are more generic for any researcher not the

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Search files and your next generation

2012-10-10 Thread SHIRLEY ANDERSON
For many years none of my children were interested. One of my daughters
promised to store my materials until someone was interested. More recently
another daughter has become interested. She is doing a limited amount of
research herself. For birthdays I have given her memberships to various
genealogy organizations. She is developing enough expertise so that she will be
able to take over my materials, my web site, etc.

Every once in a while I come across a tidbit that will have more general
interest. I put it on Facebook (most of my "friends" are relatives or
genealogists). That provides a reminder to a broader audience. (My latest was
the fact that I am a fourth cousin of Katherine Hepburn. The one before that
was a reference to an article about Alice Rand, a 1600s ancestor.)

Looking on the bright side, someone's been interested so far, that's why
there's anything for us to know/find, so assume someone will be

Re: [LegacyUG] Are There Settings for Chart Page Breaks

2012-10-10 Thread Sherry/Support
Unfortunately, at this time it's not possible to get page breaks that
don't overlap information.

However, it's pretty easy to either export the file to PDF and take it
to Kinko's or another printer or order the chart through our printer
and just have it one on continuous sheet. Just click on the "Publish"
tab in Legacy Charting.

Think of your time cutting and pasting as money. How much is your time
worth? It might cost a little more to have it printed up but you'll
save a lot of time not having to cut and paste!

I spent some time a few years ago considering just this. I had a
conversation with each of my 6 kids and came to the conclusion that only
1 had any interest whatsoever. I have included her in an ongoing
discussion of family over the years. Just enough to keep her interested
and, hopefully, not so much that she gets bored with the whole thing.

To that end, I keep her PC up to date with my latest genealogy files. I
have a single directory for all genealogy files and 1 for the Legacy
data. Both are at the root level of my 3T external drive. Both get
backed up to HER cloud account twice a week. Of course, I pay for it. :-)))

She also knows where all my paper files are and all the photo albums I
have assembled. I have used India ink on the back of all the photos to
identify the people, dates and times. Handwritten notes on archival
paper accompany many of the pages. I also use India ink for this
writing with a dip pen since fountain pens are no longer available for a
reasonable price.

Legacy plays a big part in what I will be passing on, so I try to insure
all the documentation is as up to date and correct as possible. Legacy
does a really good job of providing a vehicle for this information. I
use the Basic Sourcing techniques as I want to insure the greatest
amount of portability as is possible in today's standards. Should the
GEDCOM software improve in the future, I may re-address that decision.

Wes

I have also been thinking about that but I intend to create a book, in
PDF format, with as much information as I have, record it on CD or DVD,
distribute it to immediate family and digitally (by e-mail) to others
