Re: [LegacyUG] Error seems to be in error
Granted Ron - but there appear to be other issues caused with duplicate lines and the correct assignation to the correct parents. Barbara is having a PP alert against the wrong set of parents I get a child descended from the wrong set in charting Duplicate lines can be potential chaos I admit but given that Legacy allows multiple parents to be added to a person, then logically we should be able to ensure that the resulting relationships and charts are correct. [LegacyUG] Names not being saved on adding new people
I remember a week or two ago people were reporting a problem I had noticed about the same time. When adding relatives mentioned as surviving a person in an obituary, I would often, but not always, find that the name would not save when I saved the new person. The name would be reported as unknown. In entering an obituary today where the deceased had a great many siblings, some deceased some not I noticed that there seems to be at least some, but not total, correlation with whether or not they have information entered in either the birth and/or death slots. For the living siblings I do not know when they were born, and clearly they are not dead, my only data point is the fact they were alive on the day their sister died, so I enter the date in a custom event called Living to indicate that they were alive at that time. The majority of these living siblings lost their names when I saved them, and I had to go back in and re-add the name, re-tag the name with a source (although I had tagged the name with a source before the first save, that source was lost along with the name in my first save). This does NOT happen in every single case, as at least one of the names of the seven living siblings did save properly. When I then went to add the seven deceased siblings, every single one of them added correctly on the first save. I don't know the day they died, but I did enter Before 25 Jan 2014 so there was an entry in the death spot. To test whether the correlation might actually be with the Living: No radio button, rather than with the dates I have also tried by adding five non-existent Test siblings, for which I entered a recent year as a birth date (so would be living), and every one of them saved correctly on the first save. RE: [LegacyUG] Relationships
Sorry, yes did that and made no difference. I have now also run set relationships from every person in the family group. All show correctly but when I run it for the relationship to me they revert to the full/half. I have also since checked the children of the other daughter of my half-3rd great grandaunt - they also show half-2nd cousin 3 times removed for the son and 2nd cousin 3 times removed for the daughter. Graham PS Another issue I've just noticed since adding the twin yesterday is that the twin brother correctly has a potential problem flag ( birth too long after prev child) but the twin daughter does not. Not a bug as such I guess but I presume this would vary depending on the name, and hence order, of each child. The 'correct' option of course would be to have both flagged. Re: [LegacyUG] Oopsie -- people are unlinking themselves
After a nice long night's sleep, I went back in. Opened the L7 db from which the L8 was imported. No obvious problems. ON the premise that had those three (or more!) people been really unlinked, they should show up as a separate tree in the db, I ran the Tree report in L8 and cross-matched each end-of-line individual there with the L7 db. Nothing apparent there -- everyone showing in L8 with no parents also had no parents in L7. This leans toward the display/refresh glitch, for which grateful thanks. I didn't notice the parent icon before I made the query, so don't know if it were there or not. No I didn't run check/repair. IME with other programs, check/repair frequently makes a bad situation horrible. THIS I didn't need. (g) I'll just take a day off the project to recover from the panic. Cheryl Kurt Kneeland wrote: Could just be a display/refresh glitch. Is the parent icon dimmed out? If you click on the parent icon, do the parents show on the list? If the links really are gone, I hope it is just those last 3. I would think you could find the right parents to link to using the info in your rtf. Otherwise, I hope you have a recent backup. Until you can identify exactly what happened and why, it is difficult to say how to keep it from happening again. If it is just the last 3 records, then it may be that something in Legacy got lost or scrambled when you screen/power saver kicked in. Re: [LegacyUG] Red Line
You are correct - the thick red line apparently denotes the active person of the moment. I had not seen it before, or perhaps just not noticed it. The children whose names are in red have death dates, so it does not indicate that they are living. Again, I had not noticed that before. The girls are red and the boys blue. Anyway, it appears to be nothing to worry about. Best to just leave it along. If I go tinkering with the colors, I will be sure to mess something up. I always do. Thanks for the info. Re: [LegacyUG] Chronology tab - Print - nothing prints
Kathy, The Options Print should give you the same output as the Chronology View report layout (it does for me). The printout will not reflect the grid view if that is what you are displaying in the Chronology view. I had no control over the margins and the pages seemed to use the minimum allowable margin for my printer (about 1/4 on both sides). Top margin was about 1/2 and there was no real bottom margin (equivalent to a single print line). The Options Report should give you a preview Chronology Report page just like you would see as the chronology pages in an Individual or Family Group Report. RE: [LegacyUG] Chronology tab - Print - nothing prints
Interestingly, even if you copy the text from the screen and paste it into a word processor, it comes out looking very much like the report. But you can then fiddle with the layout (change orientation to landscape and select a smaller font, and adjust the tab stops) to get pretty close to the screen layout. Having done that, I went back into Legacy and under Display Options, I was able to make the comparable changes and get a report that looked pretty close to the screen display. Key items: Report Options tab: deselect Timeline column Page Setup: Select Landscape Change Fonts: Set Labels and Data to 8 Space lines at 130 (I found this helped make things feel a little less crowded) Column Widths tab: set Date and Event column widths to 1.25 You can fiddle with these and the other settings to suite your preferences. Another alternative would be a screen capture such as Evernote. Re: [LegacyUG] Error seems to be in error
Kathy, For the family where the child is attached the PP alert is correct. That child was born before those parents married. PP checking does not take any parent child relationships into account when checking for a problem. Only the dates for the child versus the marriage date for the parents. This is one of those special cases where the ability to turn off the PP alert for this occurrence is designed. RE: [LegacyUG] Names not being saved on adding new people
This is a bug in Legacy 8. Especially since the sources are not being saved either! There is no problem adding living people with no information except name. Also, when you know someone was alive after the death of someone else, and you know the death date of the someone else, you can always enter for the death date of the alive someone, Aft. xx/xx/. that may help until they fix the bug, which you should report directly. CE From: bgibb...@ca.inter.net To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Names not being saved on adding new people Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2014 08:05:50 -0500 I remember a week or two ago people were reporting a problem I had noticed about the same time. For the living siblings I do not know when they were born, and clearly they are not dead, my only data point is the fact they were alive on the day their sister died, so I enter the date in a custom event called “Living” to indicate that they were alive at that time. I don’t know the day they died, but I did enter “Before 25 Jan 2014” so there was an entry in the death spot. To test whether the correlation might actually be with the “Living: No” radio button, rather than with the dates I have also tried by adding five non-existent “Test” siblings, for which I entered a recent year as a birth date (so would be living), and every one of them saved correctly on the first save. I do not want to add a death date to someone who is still living, because my TNG site is set to hide all information on living people and only show information on the deceased. Re: Evernote : was Re: [LegacyUG] Research notes
I loved my Palm, still miss it! I have Evernote on my laptop, phone and tablet (when I can pry it out of his hands!). No problems synchronising them when they're all in range of a Wi-Fi signal, which they are at home. The main bonus with having it on the laptop is that I can have it open alongside Legacy, and if there's a heap of typing to be done or a web page or picture I want to grab off the screen, it's easy to do on the larger device. Being able to access my notes when I was away from home was another matter, and a bit hit-and-miss at times - very annoying when you get to the supermarket and can't open your shopping list! It's the main reason I upgraded to a paid account, so I could have my notes available at all times. Worth the small charge, in my opinion. You can limit the notebooks available off-line, should space on your device be an issue. I also follow Evernote on Facebook - they post useful tips there. Rather like following this mailing list, you never know when one of them is going to resonate with you and be useful! [LegacyUG] Notes
There were a couple of posts about how many characters/words the notes fields hold. The question was answered pretty quickly and I was tied up at the time but there is something that I wanted to add. There are MANY notes fields in Legacy that I think are underutilized. There are birth notes, baptism notes, death notes, burial notes, medical notes, location notes, event notes, image notes, marriage notes and marriage event notes. What is nice about these note fields is that they are specific. If you put everything in the General Notes or Research Notes it can get crowded and hard to wade through. [LegacyUG] Web Page Generation Problem
I am using windows 8.1 and Legacy 8.0.0.385 When I set up the web page options for a pedigree chart, I try to set the Links tab to use a Home Button. When I open the tab, the arrow is checked, but the entry is grayed out. I enter a url and select the bottom radio button, At the bottom of each page. My problem is that the entry is not generated. you can take a look at freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jester to see the results. Am I not seeing the proper setup? [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 files backup
I downloaded V. 8 Deluxe abt a month ago, I used the defaults locations, I made no changes. (I'm using Windows 7) My multimedia files were already in C:Libraries/Documents/Legacy_pics_docs, I left them there, imported one of my family files ie Brown family-v8, all was working okay, I've made backups etc., worked on the Potential Problem report many times, therefore opening and closing file with no problem. Today, I decided to Export another family file into V.8 which I did with no problem, checked it, it seemed okay, closed it and went to Open my original file Version8 Brown family-v8 and it goes to a window with numerous families files, somehow it's created in C:Users\syble\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Brown family-v8vdb a file with this same name in C: Users\syble\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\Brown family-v8.fdb and another with same name, but v82.fdb. Because I'd worked with the Potential Problems, and knew that all but a very of my red flags were gone, when I choose the Brown family v8.fdb, that something was bad wrong because I had lots of flags. Questions: 1.Is the location for the files suppose to be Documents/LFT or Documents/LFT/Data? 2. Is it okay to leave my multimedia where they are? 3. Any idea why it made a duplicate file with the same name with a 2 on the end? 4. Why are my two family files not on a list without going to another window as it was in Legay 7? RE: [LegacyUG] Unsupported File Format
Check your settings in Options-Customize 11.1. On mine the entries are blank which calls up the default programs. When I tested it, a docx came up in wordpad which said it didn't support all the functionality of a docx file. On first attempt, I'm having trouble finding the exe file for msword to put into Legacy option 11.1 or for where to tell windows to use msword instead of wordpad as the default word processor. Windows is already set where docx opens in msword if I open a file of that type from the windows file explorer. RE: [LegacyUG] Unsupported File Format
Well, I found the executable for Microsoft Office Word and I linked to it as the Word Processor in Option 11.1. If I click Launch from there, the program opens as expected. However, if I go to an individual's media center and click on a docx item there, I still get wordpad. I even tried shutting down Legacy and restarting. And also attaching a different docx document. Still keeps opening up with wordpad. Unless there's something I'm missing, it seems there is a bug here. -Original Message- From: Kurt Kneeland [mailto:kurt-kneel...@sbcglobal.net] Sent: Monday, January 27, 2014 8:07 PM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Unsupported File Format Check your settings in Options-Customize 11.1. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 files backup
I assume when you write LFT you mean Legacy Family Tree. 1. C:\users\syble\documents\legacy family trees\data 2. Yes you can leave your multimedia files where they are. You must change the location though in Options | Custom | Locations. 3. A file with a number on the end means a file's name has been duplicated and not overwritten. What was the name of the new database file as you fail to mention this? Is it this file? 4. By clicking on System or the 'L' icon in the top left corner of your screen will give you the list of your legacy files (fdb). Hope this helps. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 files backup
When you “made backups” did you use the File-Backup function (which creates Zip files) or did you use the File-Save File As function (which creates working copies of your database under alternate names)? From what you describe, I suspect you did the latter, in one case changing directories, and in another using the same filename as your main database which probably gave you a prompt asking if you wanted to save under the “2” version. The default location is in the data subdirectory but you may create family files wherever you like. Your multimedia is fine where it is. I think if you click on the Blue Circle with the “L” on it, you will find the list that you are looking for of previously opened family files. P.S. Also note that C:Libraries/Documents, C:/users/sybil/Documents, and C:/users/sybil/My Documents are all synonymous – just alternate ways that Windows expresses or displays the path to your My Documents folder.
