The only way you can see where pictures are linked is in the View

RE: [LegacyUG] Lengthy notes in Legacy 8

2014-03-08 Thread Michele/Support
Paula,

If you are in the Media Gallery and you double click the pdf it will open the
pdf up in Adobe Reader. You are correct in that the contents of the pdf will
not print in reports. There are a couple of workarounds for this. You can
save the report as a rich text file and open it in MS Word (or equivalent) and
then copy and paste or insert the pdf where you want it (later version of MS
Word can actually open pdfs where you can edit them). If you are doing a book
in the Publishing Center you can insert a place holder for the pdf and then you
can pull the place holder pages and insert the pdf later.

Ed,

There is one thing I would like to mention and I really should have mentioned
it early. The story that the man wrote, you might have some copyright issues
unless he gave you permission to copy it in its entirety, especially if you are
planning on printing it as part of your own research. Even if he gave you
permission to use it in its entirety, you still need to make sure that you give
him proper credit for it (source citation).

Michele, I have been away from the group for a few months, but does Legacy
now allow you to view/open PDF files within the app?

Ed, I was going to suggest you copy/paste the text of the story into the Notes
of an EVENT, rather than the General Notes. If the story is in a separate
file, it won't show up in any of your reports. (as I understand report
generation in Legacy) So, it depends on how you want to use the story in the
future.

Jane, If you can get the correct individuals tagged, then even if the ancestor
report doesn't have a print for tagged people option (I don't think it does),
you can still copy the tagged people (maybe the term is export?) to a new,
separate family file (fdb).  Open the new family file (which should contain
only the people you want in this report) and run the report.  Good luck!

That sounds like an interesting project, but I am not sure I am at the
level of expertise that I can accomplish it.

I will try, but I have tried to work with the Relationship Calculator

and start over, for example.

I wonder if tagging may be the answer, however.  If it is possible to do
an ancestor report and select only tagged people, that might do it.  I
will  check on that.

You can also tag using Advanced Tagging.  You can do a Descendants tag from
your ancestor, and then do an Ancestor Report of your tagged ancestors.

There have been some previous discussions of similar cases that required
exporting tagged individuals to a separate database in order to get the
 report exactly as desired.

Jane,  I use the research notes for my own notes about outstanding research (I
mean, research yet to be completed, haha).  Once the research is completed,
verified, then I enter events or update birth date, etc., and enter source
citations.  If I understand your situation, using the research notes field is
perfect.  Even if it gets long (let's say you end up with 4 bits of information
for someone that you find as you go through your stack of papers), that's
okay--getting all 4 bits of information together might be just the thing you
need to identify your next research step for that individual.

As I remember, it's easy to turn off the printing of Research Notes in your
reports.  And I've also printed reports with ONLY the Research Notes, to see
where I really stand on a particular family or line.

RE: [LegacyUG] Research notes

2014-03-08 Thread Michele/Support
Jane,

Here is what I do.

I use the General Notes for biographical information. I like to write at least
a paragraph (usually quite a bit more) on every one of my direct line ancestors
and their siblings and siblings spouses. Basically it is a synopsis of their
life. It gives me a bit of an overview in a condensed format.

I use the Research Notes for my current theories, thoughts, dilemmas, negative
evidence etc. These are just notes to myself really so that I know what I am
thinking.

I use the Medical Notes for the obvious purpose. I actually record quite a bit
of stuff in here. You can uncover quite a bit of interesting info from the
newspapers and such about what sort of ailments people were suffering from. I
also like to record if they died at home or in the hospital it that is known.

I use the notes fields that are attached to the vital events (birth,
baptism/christening, death, burial) for whatever might pertain to those
specific fields. I also use the marriage notes and events notes, again, for
things that pertain specifically to those areas. I like to keep information
closely associated with the fact it relates to so that I can find what I am
looking for quickly. I also like how it prints in reports, everything nice and
tidy :)

Re: [LegacyUG] Tablet download

2014-03-08 Thread Sherry/Support
Legacy is a Windows program and won't run on Android or iOS devices. It
*will* run on the Windows Surface Pro, which has the full version of
Windows on it.

You need to get Families by Telgen. Their website is

2014-03-08 Thread Ron Ferguson
Lee,

No, Legacy is a Windows program and will only run on a PC. It cannot be
installed on an Android o/s. The Legacy website goes into considerable detail
with suitable versions of Windows.

Provided that you have Legacy on a PC you can, however, sync. it with an app
called Families, available from play Store.

One interesting point Mike (I think) reminded me of:  He said you have to have
Census events for the Census search feature to work... but then I was wondering
if each spouse would show up with or without a census record in the Census
search feature, based on the way I've entered census events...?  Hmm... worth a
test...

Confirmed. Problem report raised to have this fixed. I found two
problems. If the last child in a family only has shared events then they
have number(s) but no events included. If the child has shared events
mixed whth their own then the shared event numbers overprint with the
first non-shared event number following the shared event(s).

[LegacyUG] Your experience with shared events ?

2014-03-08 Thread Paula Ryburn
I would appreciate hearing specifically how your usage of shared events is
different from/better than using the event clipboard.
I know the role isn't in the clipboard process.
I've read here that the GEDCOM export is not as pretty with shared events.
Other than that, what is your experience?

Not asking for an essay; just one thing that jumps out at you.
Many thanks in advance,

Instead of asking a whole lot of questions about what Legacy v8 does and
doesn't do, why don't you download it and have a look around?

It installs in a different place to previous versions, so it is easy to
keep your current version and data file intact and have them both
running at the same time. Just be sure to use a COPY of your data file
when you open it in V8, as there is a coversion process that can't be
(easily) reversed.

Kind Regards,

The sources you link to an event apply to the entire event and will be
cited for the event for everyone who shares it. There is no provision to
apply separate sources to the shares for an event. This is the same for
the vital events and for any extra events you add.

I understand all that John, my current issue is that what I had in my Notes
field in 7.5, is now in the Description field after a : (colon) after whatever
was already there (if anything)

I don't mind if notes and or sources are default on or off, I can adjust that
to suit me, what my issue with this is, is the fact that they moved my notes to
a location that I did not want them to be.

If I wanted them in Description, I would have put them in Description in the
first place.

Make sense?

[LegacyUG] Recording Australian Land Selection Records in Legacy

2014-03-08 Thread Alan Thompson
Hi

I am interested in the views of Legacy Users researching Australian families
on possible ways to record within Legacy the information extracted from
Australian Land Selection Records, with particular focus on Victorian Land
Selections. For example do users create a separate new Land Selection
event/fact or use the existing Land event/fact. Also, do users have just a
single event/fact to cover the entire Land Selection process from original
application to final ownership of the land or do they create a separate
event/fact for each milestone along the way.

Finally, I would be interested in views on how best to record the Master
Source and Source Detail information for the documents within a Victorian
Land Selection File held by the Public Records Office of Victoria, in
particular those in Series VPRS 625 and VPRS 626 (Land Selection Files,
sections 19 and 20, Land Act 1869).

Thank you

Alan Thompson
