The normal format only uses the first given name, that is why you are
seeing Joseph married ... and Marie married ... in your reports now.
Since it appears that Jean Marc and Clare Rose were the usual names
these people used you can use the Legacy quoted name feature for this
situation.
Enter Joseph Jean Marc Jean Marc and Marie Clare Rose Clare Rose as
the given names.

The normal format only uses the first given name, that is why you are
seeing Joseph married ... and Marie married ... in your reports now.
When creating reports look on the Format tab of the Report options.
There is an option to use Quoted names which will use Jean Marc and
Clare Rose as the given names in those marriage sentences as well as the
events for those people. There is also an option to use the full given
name and to remove the quoted name from the reports so the report will
use all the given names but without the portion in quotes if that is
your preference.

It sounds like you need to reset the Colours.

Tools - Set Ancestor Colours.

For Pedigree View to show colours you need to check Options -
Customise - View (8.3 in Legacy 8; look for it on the View Tab in Legacy 7)

Note in Legacy 8 you can set 8 colours and set them for two different
lines but only four colours for the Group 1 line show in reports.

There is a problem report recorded for that. It has been fixed and in
the next update to Legacy 8 you will be able to use the second colour
set or the first colour set and Legacy will use either the 4 or 8
colours depending on which you have set in Set Ancestor Colours. You
will not be able to use both the first and second colours at the same
time though so if you set yourself for set 1 and your wife for set 2
then create a chart for your child only one of the colour sets will be
used not both.

RE: [LegacyUG] printing reports for adopted child

2014-04-22 Thread Pam Gosling
Hello,

I’m just venturing out experimenting with printing reports and am interested in
opinions as to the best way to show an adoption. I couldn’t find a clear answer
to my exact question in the archives, and asked this question a few weeks ago
and didn’t get a response, so will try rewriting the question again a different
way:

I’m sending this report to a relative in Germany so want it to be as clear as
possible; my first choice would be to use the Chronology report format, but can
see some advantages as well to the Family Group Record sheet, but the
wording/layout in both seems confusing to me; it appears like this:

I have:

Situation; Female child Ottilie WM born to Carl GE and Caroline WS, adopted by
Johann HM and Wilhelmine MH.

On printing the Chronology report, for Johann HM, it looks like this:

(location), Ottilie WM (dates), (Father: Adopted) (Mother: Adopted) daughter of
Johann HM and Wilhelmina MH. . …

In the Family Group Report,

I can’t tell easily if which parents were the adoptive and which were
biological. I see it lists same Father: Adopted, Mother: adopted on same line
as Child-Par relationship.

In settings, I believe I followed the instructions carefully by entering
“adopted” for Ottilie under the “set” child-parent relationship links to Johann
and Wilhelmine and “biological” under relationship link to Carl and Caroline.
In the report options, I did check “show child-parent relationships”.

I want to make it more clear WHICH are the adoptive and which are biological
parents. Is the above method the is only/best way to do this? Or is there a
way to add text to the “set parent child relationship” field to add a
description that would show up in the family group report? Or add something to
notes? Make an event? Use a different report? Something else? Or maybe it’s
more clear as it is to people than I think?

What do most people prefer to use in this particular situation?

I welcome any suggestions as to what I’m missing/misunderstanding or a better
way to do this, etc. . .thanks so much, Pam

RE: [LegacyUG] Location of images in v8 - not what I expected

2014-04-22 Thread Paul Gray
Bill,

I agree with you. I have my multimedia collection organised (well, sort of
organised) the way I want it in a series of folders and subfolders. I do not
use the “Legacy Multimedia” folder.

· Some of the images are genealogy related, others not.

· Only a very small portion of even the genealogical images will ever
be linked in Legacy. I have many photos of Grandma, but not all of them are
linked to Legacy.

· I have a backup strategy which backs up all of my multimedia at once,
regardless of whether it is genealogical or not or whether it is linked to
Legacy or not. For this reason, I find the Legacy multimedia backup very
limited (and I don’t use it) because as I understand it, it only backs up those
images that are linked to a person, event, or source. I want to back up all
photos of Grandma, not just those linked in Legacy.

My two cents…….

Right clicking on the husb or wife's *name* doesn't directly bring up

However if you right click on the info for the husband or wife, then

Re: [LegacyUG] Right-clicking

2014-04-22 Thread Sherry/Support
You should get the right click menu when you click on the name of the
husband or wife - or anyone else on the Family view.

Which version of Legacy do you have? is it completely updated? If you
have v8, it should be 8.0.0.414 - if you don't have that build, please
update. Another thing to try, even if you have that build, is to
download the update and reinstall with the build at
www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp.

Also, one of the first things we like to recommend if something isn't
working right is that you simply restart your computer. That can solve
a myriad of problems.

Re: [LegacyUG] Child settings/status vs potential problems problem.

2014-04-22 Thread magnoliasouth
It was one of my twins. I went back to check each one by one. I could
swear I checked that before I posted, but apparently not because the
other ones weren't a problem. What I did is unlink each twin to the
parents and unliked them as twins. Then I linked the twin back.
Whatever the problem was, it worked. These were not names I ever
imported either. These were names I added recently myself.

Can you tell me exactly where those original options are? I found them
once and I've been wanting to go back over them but I can't find them
anywhere. They're probably right in front of me.

I help file says The Select Potential Problem Options screen is shown
when you choose Potential Problems Options from the Tools dropdown
menu on the Legacy FamilySearch screen.

What is the Legacy FamilySearch screen? There is Search Search
FamilySearch (which is not titled Legacy FamilySearch) but that only
does what it says it does. It launches FamilySearch, which makes zero
sense. Why would potential problems have anything at all to do with
FamilySearch? It's problems, not family.

So then in help I click on Legacy FamilySearch screen and it says The
Legacy FamilySearch screen is reached by clicking the Family Search
button on the My Toolbars tab of the Ribbon bar.

No it isn't. The My Toolbars is customizable. Fine. Maybe I removed
it. So I go to customize and guess what? All I see is the same
FamilySearch that is on the Search tab, not the My Toolbars tab.

Now I decide I'd better launch FamilySearch since I have no other
alternative, despite the fact that it makes no sense and sure enough,
there are no such options.

So now I think let me go back to the beginning. It mentions Tools,
let's go to Tools. I go to Tools and there is nothing there. I even
click on More Tools and still nothing.

Can you please explain this? I don't understand why this so overly
complicated. Shouldn't these settings, since they are settings meaning
options, be on under Options?

Like I said, it's probably very simple and right in front of me, but I
just am not seeing it.

 No PP alerts.

Like Brian, the first twin only has a PP alert if the gap after the

Please take the time (even if it is tedious on dial-up and even if it requires
a slow download) to update to the latest release.  Perhaps access the internet
at your local library or a neighbor with a fast internet and get the update on
a USB drive.  Many problems have been fixed.  It is un-productive to try to
help with a version that is out-of-date and the issues may have already been
resolved by the newest release.  Once you have 8.0.0.414 or later installed,
ask your question again so that everyone already on that version can test and
respond.  Not many will be able to test your scenario with an out-dated version
nor provide solutions that may already have been achieved.

Re: [LegacyUG] Right-clicking

Right click brings up a context sensitive menu.

Left click on a person in the parent position opens the edit screen
whether you click on the name or on the details.

Why right click and then have to click on edit?

Legacy 8 has less dependence on right click menus than the past.

Perhaps everyone needs to relearn how to left click (VBG)

Re: [LegacyUG] Vanishing Spouses?

2014-04-22 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Cheryl,

It sounds as if you are creating extra marriages. Look at the
marriage icon in Family View. How many times does it say the wife has
been married? I suspect you are ending up having her married to an
unknown/blank with the children and then married to the right John
Deaux but not had any kids with him.

Sounds like the John Deaux may also have two marriages - one with the
kids and no wife and one with the wife and no kids.

When you add a partner to a person with children, you have to make
sure you are adding them to the right family.

There's a good right up on correcting incorrect links at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/tipsRelationshipProblems.asp

I think it's Problem 11 you need to read carefully for the initial
problem you were trying to correct but now some of the others apply.

They'll all take you to the same place in order to choose the issues
you want to be globally alerted to.

To see whether an individual has been excluded from a particular
potential problem. See their Individual edit screen. Exclude from
Potential Problems button. If they have any exclusions this button
with have an asterisk on it. Click it and you'll find a check mark in
the category they've been excluded from.

You can also have a symbol shown on Family View next to someone's
name if they've been excluded from a Potential Problem. Options -
Customise 3.12

To turn on or off the PP alerts - Options - Customise 8.11

I wonder where the help file is wrong? You seem to have got into a
section talking about the way PPs can be identified when you're
working with FamilySearch.

I also am not getting PP alerts for twins.

I have lots of twins in the family, and, like Brian, checked whether
I'd done anything else to exclude them. I did have don't check gaps
for children of marriages after 1950 but that doesn't apply to the
twins in question. But just to make sure I turned that off as well.
  No PP alerts.

I just have Child Status set as Twin.

Like Brian, the first twin only has a PP alert if the gap after the
previous child is too long. None of the second twins have PP alerts.

I am not aware of any special setting that suppresses the problem for a
twin situation and I just confirmed in my file that I have not applied
any problem exclusions that are keeping the birth too soon PP from
appearing. There is a PP indicator on the first listed Twin because
there is a gap of more than 48 months between me and my twin and our
older sibling. Our twin sisters were born just a few months less than 48
months after us and neither of them shows a PP indicator.

Ah. Well then I'll make a note to ask that for a feature one day. :)
   Many thanks.

You should not be getting birth too close together so long as those
twins were born on the same day. I am a twin and I have twin
 sisters and
I do not get those warnings.

That's really weird. Is there a
