Debby,

Do you mean the Legacy FamilySearch module isn't working?
Or the new Hints - FamilySearch - test login?
There's some problem for some people with the Test Login. It's no longer
working for me whereas throughout testing it worked if not the first time after
two or three attempts.
I haven't seen a problem with the Legacy FamilySearch module.

Mika,

To use Families on your iPad an iPhone, you need to get the app from the
store and then go to

http://www.telgen.co.uk/families/
and get the Families Sync program for you computer.
That's what converts and syncs the databases.
It's not automatic.
You'll find more directions and videos on that website.

Re: [LegacyUG] User Key and Version compability

2017-04-19 Thread Cathy Pinner

Otso,

Yes the upgrade to version 9 removed your version 8 shortcuts on your
taskbar as it's a new program.

Just pin it again.

No you can't use the customer codes for 8 for v9 or vice versa. They're
really your proof of purchase.

If you actually mean can you use the same database/family file in both
versions. No. The changes to the database have been too extensive from 8
to 9. There have been previous versions of Legacy released where the old
version was updated to read the files from the new version initially.
But this wasn't done this time.

Probably making a copy of the database before upgrading would be a
good idea as, apparently, v9 ‘upgrades’ the database and is it no
longer readable by v8.

The Windows 10 ‘Creators Update’, which occurred around 11 April (a week ago),

Re: [LegacyUG] Can I have both Legacy 7 and Legacy 9 running concurrently (different data file)?

2017-04-19 Thread Ian Thomas
Another 'solution' to having Legacy 8 Deluxe (NOT v7 or 7.5) and Legacy 9
running on the same computer is to rename the family file (.fdb) within the
installed Legacy v9, then install your v8 with its v8 Customer Number. This may
require extraction of the "v8" files from the latest v8 backup ZIP files - 2 of
them, both database and media. The newly-installed v8 would 'look for' the
family file database files with the previous filenames; the v9 new install
would 'know about' the renamed database.

Given the wide range of (in)experience of Legacy users exhibited here, I would
warn that this does require some 'advanced' knowledge of computer use.

As expressed by Bob and Kris, I was surprised that the Legacy v8 was totally
removed by the v9 install - except for the backup ZIP files and the database
files, which Legacy v9 restructured so that v8 is not able to use them. I
checked C:\Program Files (x86)\ folder, of course - and see only C:\Program
Files (x86)\Legacy9\

As I wrote previously, there are a couple of glitches with the install, which I
thought should not have happened from a professional organization. This is
quite independent of testing by users and by the coders - but I would assume
that user testers would have objected to this replacement.

I renamed my Legacy8 folders before installing v9 so I can now run both v8 and
v9 concurrently (after naming the v8 files back to the original). Of course
the databases are different as v9 has converted the database to the new version
- however, I had made copies of the database as well.

Some attributes of v9 show up in v8 now so There must be some overlap in the
user file settings.

Any file changes made in v9 will not be reflected in the 'old' v8 database.

I would suggest that for most people not being able to run the two versions
concurrently should not be an issue. I have some family that won't be
upgrading to v9 anytime soon and I still help them so I just wanted to be able
to use the same version.

I agree with Robert, and taking it even further (sorry!), I disagree with the
Sherry's statement (below). While it is true that pretty much every program
will install over an existing version for "updating," this is not the case for
"upgrading." Updates for v.8 should install in the Legacy 8 directory, but v.9
shouldn't remove or install over an existing version of a different number --
it should have its own directory, as Robert indicates, and leave previous
versions alone.

I don't recall ever installing a new version of a program that
overwrites/deletes a previous version without asking for instructions from me
first. This case is particularly troubling since Legacy 8 and Legacy 9 have
different directory names, and Legacy 8 is apparently "gone." The installer
seems to be doing something to Legacy 8 that it shouldn't be doing.

Any new version of a program is going to have issues -- some more significant
than others -- and users shouldn't be required to commit until these bugs are
found and corrected. Anyone who installs a brand new version in its infancy is
basically beta testing and it's the user who should be in control of that role.

I think it's great that Legacy support posted information about good practices
(backup, check file, etc.), but there are good practices for software
developers, too.

I'm not sure why it's set up this way, but don't think saving "support a lot of
headaches" would be the reason. Obviously, it's just caused new and different
ones. :-D

I've looked through the new features, and v.9 isn't for me unless the report
formatting problems have been fixed this time.

Re: [LegacyUG] Can I have both Legacy 7 and Legacy 9 running concurrently (different data file)?

2017-04-19 Thread Bob Austen
I renamed my Legacy8 folders before installing v9 so I can now run both v8
and v9 concurrently (after naming the v8 files back to the original). Of
course the databases are different as v9 has converted the database to the
new version - however, I had made copies of the database as well.

Some attributes of v9 show up in v8 now so There must be some overlap in the
user file settings.

Any file changes made in v9 will not be reflected in the 'old' v8 database.
I would suggest that for most people not being able to run the two versions
concurrently should not be an issue. I have some family that won't be
upgrading to v9 anytime soon and I still help them so I just wanted to be
able to use the same version.

I agree with Robert, and taking it even further (sorry!), I disagree
with the Sherry's statement (below). While it is true that pretty much
every program will install over an existing version for "updating," this
is not the case for "upgrading." Updates for v.8 should install in the
Legacy 8 directory, but v.9 shouldn't remove or install over an existing
version of a different number -- it should have its own directory, as
Robert indicates, and leave previous versions alone.

I don't recall ever installing a new version of a program that
overwrites/deletes a previous version without asking for instructions
from me first. This case is particularly troubling since Legacy 8 and
Legacy 9 have different directory names, and Legacy 8 is apparently
"gone." The installer seems to be doing something to Legacy 8 that it
shouldn't be doing.

Any new version of a program is going to have issues -- some more
significant than others -- and users shouldn't be required to commit
until these bugs are found and corrected. Anyone who installs a brand
new version in its infancy is basically beta testing and it's the user
who should be in control of that role.

I think it's great that Legacy support posted information about good
practices (backup, check file, etc.), but there are good practices for
software developers, too.

I'm not sure why it's set up this way, but don't think saving "support a
lot of headaches" would be the reason. Obviously, it's just caused new
and different ones. :-D

I've looked through the new features, and v.9 isn't for me unless the
report formatting problems have been fixed this time.

In v9, if I go to Customize/ 8. View/ 8.11 Monitor Potential Prob
lems/ Change Potential Problems Settings/ Warnings, make changes to
ages, click on Set All, the changes are not saved. (Just close then
reopen 'Change Potential Problem Settings' and all changes are back at
the default
settings.)

What am I doing wrong? Or have I found a bug?

Others have had success by closing Legacy 9 and rebooting your Windows PC
and then going back into Legacy 9 and help seems to work ok.

Re: [LegacyUG] Emdash rendered '97

2017-04-19 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Jennifer,

The emdash 'problem' cleared up for me about a month ago. I use FoxPro and
they had a 'Copy Plaint Text' feature that worked great however, on their
latest version, it stopped working and they no longer supported other party
fixes. A couple months later it no longer happened. I thought it was Legacy
that heeded my call. Any copied text now comes across with ALL formatting
removed including tabs, so it is very basic text. This continues in V9.

First I would like to say I really like V9, especially the new Hints
function.

I do have a question about the My heritage hints. I currently have a My
Heritage subscription but wonder whether I will be able to view the hints in
full without a subscription.

My main problem so far with V9 after having converted from v 7.5 (I skipped
v 8) is that in my notes, emdash is rendered as '97. I have dozens of these
in notes obtained from old newspaper transcripts. Is there a way I can stop
them appearing this way?

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problems - changing settings

2017-04-19 Thread Bob Austen
Thanks Ian, Cathy,

Restart doesn’t help.

It is the age Warnings (8.11) and any/all of the ages go back to default – I
can’t find a way to save changes.

Bob,
I didn't even remember you could change the criteria there.
They seem to be holding for the ones I've tried except the first gap setting -
warn if first child born less than x months after marriage.

I'll check it further and add the bug report but are there any particular ones
not holding for you?

Re: [LegacyUG] How to handle persons who change surname?

2017-04-19 Thread Ian Thomas
Thx Brian - that all sounds sensible to me, so I will try it out. A Name Change
Event (if it doesn’t exist, can be created) with legal docs or not covers the
range of situations, I think.

Here is my two cents on this:

For Him I would use his birth name and enter a Name Change Event (you may need
to create this I have not checked if legacy has a name Change event by
default). With the Name Change Event you can enter the date when the name
changed and provide source documentation (court proceedings, application,
however it was documented). If you want his current name used in reports you
will have to Add the new name as an AKA (which you can also source but cannot
date) then switch the AKA with the original name.

For the children simply use his current Surname as their Surname. Legacy
proposes the Father's surname for a child when adding children but you are free
to change that to whatever applies. I think that there is even a setting in
Options where you can turn off the automatic Father's surname but I have not
taken the time to look. Some cultures do not use the Father's surname for
children and the turn off of the father surname option exists for users in
those areas of the world.

had the same name (Douglas) as the mother’s surname.

Re: [LegacyUG] Emdash rendered '97

2017-04-19 Thread Brian Kelly
If you have a subscription to MyHeritage you should have a login option
in the top right of the Hints screen at their website. Once you log in
you will have all the access allowed by your subscription. My
understanding is that MyHeritage has differing subscription levels so
you are only allowed to see data within the limits of your subscription.

If you do not have a subscription or account when you click to review, a
Hint MyHeritage will send you to a screen where you are asked to create
an account. They do have a Free Account I understand which allows access
to a limited set of records but only paid subscribers are allowed access
to data behind their "paywall".

FindMyPast and Genealogy.com works in the same way. You need an account
or a paid subscription in order to access the details for the Hints they
provide and only records which are within the limits of your account
will be available for you to see the details.

The problem with the Emdash (and also with the Endash) is a known issue.
According to the problem report Legacy is inconsistent in treatment of
these characters. General Notes handle them correctly but most other
notes such as Event notes and source detail text do not. There are also
other issues reported with Emdash and Endash including some which cause
Legacy to stop responding.
