Martha,

The hdb file is to do with the Hinting in Legacy 9.
Hashtags are saved in the main data file .fdb

Re: [LegacyUG] Citations from Hints in v.9?

2017-05-10 Thread Denise Moss-Fritch
Gene,

Other than FamilySearch.com, the other online records search site that
currently offers pre-written citations is AmericanAncestors.org (New England
Historic Genealogical Society).

I just wish the extracted information for the indexes at Ancestry.com were much
better. It becomes tiring finding major errors in extractions/indexes, writing
and sending corrections to Ancestry, than hoping that Ancestry will make the
changes. Unfortunately too many people seem to rely upon the index entries,
without actually reviewing the record image.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Users Classes

2017-05-10 Thread Martha Graham

Listers,
One of the functions of my Gen Soc was to have Legacy user classes [ way
back when Legacy began].
After those ceased, I did Legacy tutorials when it was my turn to 'sit
the Genealogical Library'.
So, check with your local Gen Soc and see if someone is willing to set
up classes for Version 9.
Or find a local Legacy guru and meet at the public library where they
have wifi.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citations from Hints in v.9?

2017-05-10 Thread Denise Moss-Fritch
Thank you Brian, but what I wrote is accurate. In the Basic Source, the Source
Detail text box of the Detail Information tab, there is a limit. Many of the
source - citations written for FamilySearch documents cannot be recorded unless
shortened, such as :

"United States World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918," database with
images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K6XK-WR8 : 12
December 2014), Jesse J Longnecker, 1917-1918; citing Ottowa County no 1,
Michigan, United States, NARA microfilm publication M1509 (Washington D.C.:
National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 1,682,806.

Instead, that source - citation from FamilySearch records only the following in
the Source Detail text box because of the character limits:

"United States World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918," database with
images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K6XK-WR8 : 12
December 2014), Jesse J Longnecker, 1917-1918; citing Ottowa County no 1,
Michigan, United States, N

I reported this situation many months ago and the problem is already confirmed
and on the list.

Denise,

The source text in all sources Basic and SourceWriter are allowed to contain
1,000,000 characters. You may be confusing the "Source text"
with the Source detail field which is limited to 255 Characters or the
Publication Facts field which is limited to 248 characters. Long citations
copied from FamilySearch into those shorter fields may not fit but any citation
should fit in the Citation Text.

You can see the limits of the fields in Legacy in the Help file. Open help and
look for capacities.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citations from Hints in v.9?

2017-05-10 Thread Brian Kelly

Denise,

The source text in all sources Basic and SourceWriter are allowed to
contain 1,000,000 characters. You may be confusing the "Source text"
with the Source detail field which is limited to 255 Characters or the
Publication Facts field which is limited to 248 characters. Long
citations copied from FamilySearch into those shorter fields may not fit
but any citation should fit in the Citation Text.

You can see the limits of the fields in Legacy in the Help file. Open
help and look for capacities.

If you use the Basic Source tool, you can cut and paste a source and
citation created by an individual online service. FamilySearch already
has such pre-written source – citations for each document found,
although most source – citations are longer than Legacy will allow in
the Source Detail text box. None of the other services (MyHeritage,
FindMyPast, or GenealogyBank) offer pre-written source - citations for
their found data.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adopted child

2017-05-10 Thread Brian Kelly
I would enter the child as her's without adding a father. I would then
link the child to her parents and indicate the child to parent
relationship between the child and those parents as Adopted.

I would use the available birth certificate as a source for all those
but would add a note to the source (probably in the Source comments)
with my suspicions that the document replaced the true birth
certificate. In the note you can include any evidence you have about the
situation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citations from Hints in v.9?

2017-05-10 Thread Denise Moss-Fritch
Gene,

Do you use Source Writer or the Basic Source tool?

If you use Source Writer, the complexity of the various types of data (vital
records, newspapers, census, military, etc), along with the multiple options
available in that tool, would extremely difficult for the Legacy software to
analyze and write an accurate and complete source and citation. Probably a
complex artificial intelligence component would be needed.

If you use the Basic Source tool, you can cut and paste a source and citation
created by an individual online service. FamilySearch already has such
pre-written source – citations for each document found, although most source –
citations are longer than Legacy will allow in the Source Detail text box. None
of the other services (MyHeritage, FindMyPast, or GenealogyBank) offer
pre-written source - citations for their found data.

Not much help I’m afraid. However, you might consider using the Basic Source
tool for any data you obtain from FarmilySearch. You could than use their
pre-written source – citations.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ver. 9 - Right Click - Family View - issue or not

2017-05-10 Thread Brian Kelly
I do not see that problem with either the right click or the left click
on an empty father/mother nor with the right click on an existing
parent. The right or left click on an empty parent gives me the window
asking if I want to add a new person or link to an existing person. Left
clicking on an existing parent opens their individual edit windows not
the edit window for the woman.

is the individual view of the person I am trying to add the parents to.

Same issue – if I have the parents’ names already in place and I right
click on the name of either one, a pop-up allows me to click “edit the
father” or “edit the mother”. When clicking on either choice, the
individual view for the child (not either parent) opens for editing
purposes.

I wasn’t this way in ver. 8.

Anybody else experiencing “right-click” issues?

Thanks

2017-05-10 Thread Brian Kelly

Ian,

Your issue of the sibling list containing both siblings and children
(which is a problem only for females by the way) is a known issue with
Legacy 9.0. According to the problem tracking system this will be fixed
in the next update.

For one individual only, the Siblings list shows her 7 siblings and
herself, _but also her 6 children from her marriage_ - all of these
listed have correct RIN.

Selecting each sibling in turn, then opening the siblings list for each,
shows no errors. It is only for the one individual that this problem exists

Checking names, I have no duplicates - everything appears normal.

In the last 36 hours, I was editing some information for this part of
the family. What I describe MAY have occurred if the right-click popup
window was for the wrong person, and I didn’t notice that. I have screen
capture images of the problem (which I can’t correct). My solution was
to open a previous backup, for which the problem isn’t showing.

I have reported this to Millennia, but I’m not sure it has the same
