The original message to the list is in the attachment.

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages
without conversion to attachments should use a different email address
for their subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require
this conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email
providers will also work but you will have to give them a try.--- Begin Message ---
When you make a new entry or amend then save the new recorded is added to your
file. The backup is simply a reserve.

There's a problem with the server at the moment (or was).
When you get an error like this, that should be your first thought.

Note the cloud backup is just an extra backup. It shouldn't be
your only backup and it shouldn't be your only backup off your

Thank you, Cathy. I just started with Legacy a couple of weeks ago, so have a
lot to learn. I'll start backing up to my Dropbox, as well. I should have
thought of that. I back everything else I do to Dropbox.
Again, thank you. I'm feeling relieved.

When you get an error like this, that should be your first thought.

Note the cloud backup is just an extra backup. It shouldn't be your only backup
and it shouldn't be your only backup off your computer.

I wouldn't mind getting off the Legacy cloud and just backing up to
dropbox. I wouldn't know how to delete the info on the Legacy cloud
though. Is that possible or feasible, do you think?

OK, great. Thank you Cathy. I will do some "playing around" and see.

Henk

If you put them in notes it will work.

To use the ones from the Media Gallery needs a programming change which is why
I said to send in the suggestion as I can't check at the moment to see if it's
there.

What do you think about privacy concerns regarding those off-computer (Cloud)

There's a problem with the server at the moment (or was).
When you get an error like this, that should be your first thought.

Note the cloud backup is just an extra backup. It shouldn't be your only backup
and it shouldn't be your only backup off your computer.

Henk,

You can add a hyperlink to notes in Legacy.
Here's how according to Anne Marie Holck:
This is how it is done:
«a href="http://legacyfamilytee.com/"»Legacy Home page«/a» This is
just an example. Change the url to whatever you want. And the 'Legacy
Home page' text shall be changed to whatever text you need shown to
identify the link/url, that you want people to click on. This will
make a clickable link in any note field.
Note the << are special symbols and I never remember what they're
called. They're not just two greater or less than signs.

I don't know if there is a suggestion logged to be able to add the URL
from where you can enter it in the Media Gallery. I can't look as the
website seems to be down. Send it in.

But that wouldn't solve your issue in a third party report generator.
You'd have to ask them.

OK Carry, Sherry, everyone: I hear you, so I am asking for user
support. I want to call in the help of Legacy users regarding the
following issue: How to get hyperlink URL’s in reports.

In addition to pictures and documents (I have never used sound files
and video files as yet) , I have added lots and lots of URL’s to the
various Media Galleries (of Individuals, Stories and Places) in order
to provide further, in-depth & graphic information about the
individuals, the places where they were born, lived and died, and so
on. Legacy is perfectly capable to store that information and

Re: [LegacyUG] Saving your work

2018-02-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jean,
I'm glad you found your work. It's one reason why I only have one real
file. When I had more than one I could never remember which one I had
updated.

Legacy saves every time you click Save on a data entry screen. Unlike
Word/Excel etc, you don't have to manually save (or set up a background
autosave). Even if Legacy crashes it's very rare for the last item you
entered not to be saved. I've never seen more than the last item lost.

On the other hand, if you are doing a lot of data entry or data cleanup,
it's wise to make backups during the process.

You can move your work from one file to the other using Split Screen to
drag the individual or family to copy them from one file to the other.
You'd then need to merge the duplicates.

Cathy

Oh, I have to confess! Jerry Kime and Cathy Pinner, you were right! I
do have two files with both me and husband in them! I have separate
dbf for my husband’s family lines, and one for my lines, each
beginning with the two of us. I have NEVER mixed them up over thirty

I just found the message when I tried to send for a recovery email. (I
have deleted my personal email.)

Failed to connect to MySQL: No connection could be made because the target
machine actively refused it. Failed to connect to MySQL: No connection
could be made because the target machine actively refused it. Unable to
query database in Error Handler INSERT INTO ErrorLog
(Err_Numb,Error,Err_Msg,Page,Referer_Page,Remote_IP,UID,Debug) VALUES

Perhaps this will help identify the problem.

[LegacyUG] URL's hyperlinked in reports

2018-02-24 Thread Henk
Dear Legacy users,

OK Carry, Sherry, everyone: I hear you, so I am asking for user support. I want
to call in the help of Legacy users regarding the following issue: How to get
hyperlink URL's in reports.

In addition to pictures and documents (I have never used sound files and video
files as yet) , I have added lots and lots of URL's to the various Media
Galleries (of Individuals, Stories and Places) in order to provide further,
in-depth & graphic information about the individuals, the places where they
were born, lived and died, and so on. Legacy is perfectly capable to store that
information and on-screen, using Legacy, the genealogy comes to life! However,
I sorely miss all of that information showing in hyperlink format in the
various PDF reports, especially TCGR, which I have found to be a really good
companion reporting program. Maybe anyone has figured out how to get URL's in
hyperlink format in reports?
I have gone through all the export and reporting settings in Legacy and TCGR
burt have not as yet been able to achieve what I want.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Henk.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy

2018-02-24 Thread Sherry H
And being aware of possible subscription problems can help the Legacy
Users who are planning on subscribing to My Heritage. Not everyone is
aware enough to watch out for the "automatic renewal" option and may
end up being charged for more time than they wish.

Someone I know subscribed for a smaller amount and his subscription
was renewed for *twice* that a year later. Not a happy camper because
he wasn't aware of the automatic renewal and how to turn it off. Don't
you think it's better to resolve something like this before it
happens???

The list is not specifically for Legacy Support to attend to - they
have more than enough to worry about - but for "users helping users"

A Add on, integration issues fine, but their membership issues are a My
Heritage issue. Not a Legacy Support issue.

There have been many complaints of this list getting smaller or Quiet.

There were complaints when Michelle did a Legitimate Legacy poll to gauge
feature usage.

I think this list needs to stay on point LEGACY, otherwise it will drive more
people away!

If you want to argue with the guidelines, go ahead, Carrie. These have been in
place since the Legacy Lists first started...

I'm not looking at changing rules. You *could* consider the MyHeritage website

the website for the company that owns Legacy can't be discussed.

[LegacyUG] URL's in Legacy reports and in TCGR

2018-02-24 Thread Henk
Hi,

I am still trying, without success, to have URL's added to the "Person media
gallery" and the "Story media gallery" to show up (preferably as hyperlinks) in
the various reports, particularly in those produced with the help of The
Complete Genealogy Reporter.

Can anybody help? Many thanks in advance,

Amen Pauline; automatic renewals should be outlawed. I guess they think we are
all too stupid to check credit card statements. Perhaps it's just another
covert method to separate folks from their money in this all too capitalistic
society. Now even the internet is a bad as TV with pop-up commercials to BUY,
BUY, BUY. Genealogy used to be an enjoyable pastime; thank you corporate
America for ruining it. Go buy another politician and leave us alone!

to 250 people."

Sorry. Be wary of anything "free" from MyHeritage. My husband and I first did
autosomal testing with 23andMe in about 2013. They also had a crude tool for
entering family tree history. I detested the clunky format and did not enter
much data on it. Later, 23andMe informed us they were no longer going to
support family tree data, and they had sent our DNA and family tree data to
MyHeritage. That was in February of 2014. I had previously opened an account
on WorldVitalRecords, and in February 2014, MyHeritage informed me that
WorldVitalRecords had been merged with MyHeritage, so in February 2014,
MyHeritage said they had given us "a free empty MyHeritage account for one
year, which is a gift worth $119, for free, and we would have access to World
Vital Records and My Heritage both. The Premium Plus account will not renew
automatically. By creating your family tree on our site, you will
automatically receive your matches for free. "

In February 2015, email from MyHeritage thanked me for purchasing an annual
bundle of data subscription plus PremiumPlus family site. You have been charged
US $99.95 ...We have upgraded our existing family site Cramer Family Site to
PremiumPlus. I had to request a new password, because I had not been using it
and had not recorded the password. The next day, they sent another email
starting with "An error occurred while renewing your MyHeritage Data
Subscription. It was not possible to extend your subscription and it expired.
" They offered a MyHeritage Data subscription that will cots US $71.40 for one
year, instead of the usual $119.40. About two weeks later I requested a new
password again and tried entering data again, but did not like the user
interface. Again in Feb 2015, I requested a new password. So I remember I
put a few photos on the tree, but I really did not like the data entry format.
That was about the last time I remember even looking at the MyHeritage website,
until I started noticing funny little orange icons turning up on my Legacy
Family Tree on my desktop computer.

Apparently my desktop computer was getting messages from MyHeritage asking me
to verify something someone else had entered on their trees, and smart matches
found my entries, which I found very annoying, since whenever I saw these
messages, my mind was always focused on something else far away. I have been a
subscriber to Ancestry.com for many years, and I have been focusing on
AncestryDNA and growing my trees on Ancestry.com and on my Legacy Family Tree
file, and looking for my 1000+ living cousins on AncestryDNA, and how I am
connected to them, and also on FTDNA and 23andMe. And I had no interest in
working on the old trees on MyHeritage. And I never considered buying DNA
analysis from My Heritage. But I noticed people on the Legacy Family Tree user
group talking about My Heritage DNA testing.

Unfortunately, a few days ago, Februrary 2018, I noticed an email from
MyHeritage saying I was charged $250.74. This shocked me because I thought my
subscription had expired. I asked my husband to check charges. He had just
paid it that morning. He also found we had paid $238.80 in 2016, etc.. Which
was another shocker. He immediately sent an email cancelling the 2018 payment
he had just made. It took a couple of years to look at 5 years of paper trail.
We appear to have have charged over $750 for something I did not ask for in
the first place and did not like when I attempted to use it. I have been
using Legacy Family Tree for over 15 years, since 2002, but, if Legacy Family
Tree is now owned by My Heritage, my first impulse is just to give up on

Hi,
I've been researching about 25 years and the key to it is BACK-UP and
BACK-UP thee back-ups. I do this at least every 30 min or so. I know its a
pain, but it will save both time and your hard efforts. 5 min doing this
will save years of hard work.

2018-02-24 Thread Sue Jamieson
I commiserate with you. I also had the experience of my computer locking
up, yesterday, when I was in the middle of researching and editing with
Legacy. Everything completely froze, no mouse, no anything. I had to shut
down the computer and reboot four times before I could get everything up
and running again. I thought it was a computer problem unique with me.
Perhaps not. I do believe everything I had been working on was saved, but
I did find myself in a mad scramble for about 45 minutes of trying to get
everything operational again. I wonder what was going on? I do hope all
of your work was not lost. I love this program. I just started two weeks
ago on researching my ancestors and have so enjoyed it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Saving your work

2018-02-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jean
It sounds like you may have opened a different file. Perhaps the crash
upset the setting of which file Legacy opened.

See this support article:

and this one

If you're still having trouble contact Support and they'll be able to
walk you through.

It's highly unlikely that your work wasn't saved.
And if the work from a previous day isn't there, then that's extra
indication that you've opened a different file.
You can see this from the Recent File list. One of those articles shows
you how to check that.

If you end up scanning your computer for Legacy files you may encounter
a bug if you're using Windows 10.
See this article for how to fix that one: It talks about the Media
Relinker but it's the same issue with the windows.old file.

I am upset. I spent perhaps nine hours yesterday on events for just two
people - me and my late husband - researching, locating, developing
sources

(I do not use the source writer), entering source detail documentation;
scanning and entering pictures and documents. I was so proud of
myself, our

event screens were full of sacramental records, military happenings,
retirements, anniversaries, and of course, his obituary, Each event had
icons showing sources and media attached. I minimized Legacy to the task
bar so I could write a letter, was unable to print it because the
curser was

not moving. OK, put new batteries in the mouse. Still no movement. Maybe
the keyboard has batteries. Replaces those. No movement. Cannot close the
letter. Cannot close anything. Totally locked up. So I turned it off.
Rebooted, and all was well. Except all my day's work had disappeared, as
well as some events I had done several days ago. Now I am not the most
tech
savvy - I call my granddaughter when I have tech problems - but I've
never

lost things like this before. Why did Legacy not save my work?

Jean, When this happens to me, and I reboot, I find Legacy opens to
where I started this morning.  If I than go to where I was working
last,  I find everything has been saved and is still there.

I hope this is true for you also.
