It would be nice if it was automatic if the person died under a certain
age (i.e. 12).

Just a thought.

[LegacyUG] Web pages- Ancestor - shared events

2015-03-05 Thread Bernd Hornung
Using Windows 7 and Legacy build 8.0.0.459

I have an unusual phenomenon when I create an Ancestor web page. It
'throws' all shared events into one persons details. I have run this a
couple of times changing some settings but with the same results.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

I was merrily working away and wanted to make a new Master Event Address

people entered in the last day or so. Can the List be recovered from

Re: [LegacyUG] uploading legacy information to the web

2014-10-27 Thread Bernd Hornung
I chose Legacy because it generates its own web pages and imbeds the
pictures. No messing with geds. Just need a host, ftp program and
maybe a basic web editor. It's not perfect and there are lots of things
that I would lie to see added (i.e. relationships to base person) but
for a basic presence on the Internet it works.

Re: [LegacyUG] confirmation dates and error checking

2014-05-16 Thread Bernd Hornung
I think she is referring to Quasi as a specific date in the liturgical
church calendar

*Low Sunday (Octave Sunday of Easter)* */Quasi modo geniti infantes/
(I Peter 2:2)*

This date last year was May 1st and this year April 27th.

I have used this site
(http://www.staff.science.uu.nl/~gent0113/easter/easter_text2c) to
calculate the date referred to in the church record. I would use circa
April 27, 2014 and place the liturgical date in the notes.

Thank you Cathy. Just your mentioning that there was some sort of

[LegacyUG] Marriage tagging

2014-05-15 Thread Bernd Hornung
Is there a way to tag all direct line marriages as a group? I have set
marriage Tag 1 as direct line, and general Tag 1 as direct line
ancestor. Other than doing each marriage manually I would like to
apply marriage tag 1 to all direct line marriages in order to make a
report that I could manipulate in spreadsheet to mark what events I have
documentation for and what needs to be found.
Supplemental - I have a search list of all direct ancestors and under
print/options I have checked "include RINs and MRINs" but the MRIN does
not show on the report. I thought if this did I could save as CSV and
then sort by MRIN to put husband and wives together. The ultimate
report I would want would be a spreadsheet that shows:
Name/relationship/birth/death/marriage

I manually made such a chart in much smaller databases but in the
current DB of 35,000 with many more ancestral lines, it is daunting task.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bernie

Re: [LegacyUG] Location merging

2014-04-13 Thread Bernd Hornung
I am not certain that all the options functions are working properly on
the Master Lists Locations. Purge works but auto merge does not. I ran
it while looking at two locations that were identical (I checked) and
ran merge. It reported no duplicates. Also, as I understand it, one of
the options is to change state abbreviations such as MA, RI, UT to full
state names. This also does not appear to do anything.

Running Legacy 8 latest on Windows 7.

Re: [LegacyUG] "Create Web Pages" question

2014-04-05 Thread Bernd Hornung
Wendy and Kathy are right, your documents didn't go anywhere. I produce
them for my own webpages but also as an easy way to see errors,
especially for those that are marked as living. You can have your
webpage open in your browser and go back and forth with Legacy to make
the adjustments. You might also see other things that are not always
apparent in the program such as marriages out of order.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging marriages

2014-01-11 Thread Bernd Hornung

Your solution, Ron, is actually going the wrong way for what I wanted,
moving up the lines not down. There is probably a solution for that
using your methodology.

Legacy appears to "tag" individuals for the purposes of marking the
direct lines (bold names and +) as well as colour coding the grandparent
lines. If any of these showed up in the Marriage List, I wouldn't need
to ask. I could just scroll down, see the appropriate indication, and
do what I need to do. These are the same pieces of data but seem to be
divorced from each other (pun somewhat intended ).

I don't know anything about how the programming works, but is there a
way to have this relationship?

[LegacyUG] Tagging marriages

2014-01-09 Thread Bernd Hornung
I would like to tag all direct ancestor marriages to tagged 8th and 9th
generation grandparents. I have them tagged #1 and have a search list.

Is there a way to use this to tag the intervening marriages as marriage
tag #1. This presumes that the tags are different between general and
marriage tags. If not I can use a different tag #.

I would like to use the tags as a research guide and not have to work
down the marriage list (8400) one by one, not knowing right off, which
are direct ancestors and which are 5th cousins 5x removed.

Any pointers to directions or assistance is appreciated.

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Shared events

2013-12-09 Thread Bernd Hornung
Like you I have been playing with Shared Events but am having trouble
with the sentence definition. I have looked at the PDF manual and help
but am still stumped as to how to proceed.

I have created individual census events (i.e. Census - Canada Census
1916, Census - United States 1880, etc.).

I have created various roles in these Events as the need arises, such as
wife, child (not son or daughter), father, mother, etc.

I would like a sentence something like: Canada Census 1916 shows John
Doe(head) residing in [place] with wife (wife) and child(ren) and who
ever else is shared

When I try to make the sentence it does not pick up the wife but
re-enters the head. It does not seem to find the individual roles.

How would I construct this to show what I want, including all roles
without having to enter every role individually to the definition when I
cannot see how many there are (listing 6 children, a father and
stepmother - for example).

I looked forward to this function, specifically for Census events, but
until I can get a handle on this one, I would have to reconsider it for
other events.

Thanks for you help and kudos to the developers and staff at Legacy.

What a neat report. My longest marriage was 1046 years; a 1699 year
old; and a 1688 year old.

Gotta watch those typos :)

Re: [LegacyUG] Loop on Map Family

2013-11-30 Thread Bernd Hornung
I had this when I opened my first L8 file and was curious about the
mapping. It turned out that the baptism and burial had a
descriptor(name of church and ducal vault) rather than a place. Once I
put the descriptor in the address and corrected the place, it did not loop.

I have L7 Deluxe and am preparing to migrate my databases to L8 (good

That's why was considering option #.5, which is to add a note(s) to the

Re: [LegacyUG] Webpages

2013-09-17 Thread Bernd Hornung
Thanks all,

As usual there is no easy fix and I am not comfortable with messing
around in CSS. I use a very simple WYSIWYG editor for my main pages,
not very sophisticated but serves the purpose. I did not know about
. I have tried several ged to html editors and they
each have their own pluses and minuses. I especially like one that
indicates the direct relationship to a root person, much like Legacy
does in the program but is missing in the webpages.

I will do as your tutorial suggests, Ron, and make a small set and play
with the CSS until it comes out the way I like (or not -lol).

Happy hunting,

Bernie

Re: [LegacyUG] Locations

2013-09-09 Thread Bernd Hornung
DSL

I understand the V for the L column.

Thank you Tessa for the tip. It seems to be speeding up the process.
Just have remember to turn it back on later.
I also discovered that one can combine more than one location at a time
by using the Shift or Control key.

Thanks to all

Re: [LegacyUG] Locations

2013-09-09 Thread Bernd Hornung
I have turned off 'Show Map' but it makes no difference.

I am editing the Locations list, combining myriads of duplicated
locations. File maintenance does not seem to deal with it since it does
not recognize the minute differences (i.e. commas).

At this stage I do not necessarily need Legacy to put the 'V' in, I
just want to combine and not take until Legacy 10 comes out, to finish it.

As an aside, does Legacy "read" Location connections made it another
DB? It seems that it is making connections of some places I remember
having worked on in two of my other DBs.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Family Tree 8 Revealed - Automated Sorting

2013-09-09 Thread Bernd Hornung
Hurry up with the release before my wife finds the pennies I have
squirreled away for this and spends them on something really unneeded.

In your example, were the marriages concurrent, like some of the Mormon
families in my families? I haven't tried a Timeline on such a family,
but wonder if the children would be listed in order of their birth, with
reference to the correct mother/wife?

Re: [LegacyUG] Locations

2013-09-09 Thread Bernd Hornung
Ron,

When you click on a location, the program tries to find it
geographically. It goes into "thinking" mode (in my case), the little
circle goes round and round until it is done. Then you can click to
edit or whatever else you need to do. Then you click on the redundant
location you want to combine and again it's "thinking". Finds the same
information it did on the first location. Once it stops, then you can
combine.

Also, the program sometimes comes up with some weird connection, such as
a location in Ontario, Canada somehow gets connected to a location in
the USA. As far as I know they are still part of Canada even though
they don't always act like it (I'm in the west). What it does to some
English locations is sometimes quite laughable.

[LegacyUG] Locations

2013-09-09 Thread Bernd Hornung
Is there a way to turn off the automatic "thinking"? I have a large
database with 100s of locations that are a total mess. I just want to
go through it and combine those locations that are the same (as far as I
can tell). I don't want it to be "thinking" for each of, for example,
the 10 different descriptions for Herkimer, NY.

Once I have pared down the list then I can go through and verify
locations and geocode.

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship calculator print

2013-09-06 Thread Bernd Hornung
Just fixed my own problem. There was little button that referred to the
current relationship that needed to be checked. The default is all
relationships and that is too much to for the system when you have
30,000 in the db. It takes long enough for Legacy to work through all
those people just to do the relationship between the two highlighted people.

[LegacyUG] Relationship calculator print

2013-09-06 Thread Bernd Hornung
I recently added a database of my wife's maternal family, a database
that originally got me interested in genealogy. I notice that there
were some familiar surnames that seemed to related to a 3rd cousin of
mine that I had found last year. I tracked these names through FS and
other sources and BINGO, she turned out to be my wife's 6th cousin.

Now, when I try to create a text file of the relationship calculator I
get a runtime 0005 error and the program crashes. I tried this twice
with the same result. Has anyone encountered this and is there is solution?

What I what to do is put this relationship plus my relationship on my
blog so I need a text document that I can play with to format. There
doesn't seem to be a report for this.

Any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

Re: [LegacyUG] import/export into Excel

2013-09-03 Thread Bernd Hornung
Kathy, I think the issue is Microsoft .Net Framework 4 vs Microsoft .Net
Framework Client.

I want it to give me the relationship, not just say blood relation. In
Legacy Index View you have what appears to be a spreadsheet and you can
vary the columns, including adding one that gives the relationship to
the root person. The index report itself only gives the name,
relationship and date range. I use a complete spreadsheet to put on
the webpage with highlights showing the documented event. It also helps
me see at a glance what documentation I still have to "chase".

Thanks for your help.

Must be a fundamental system difference between laptop(where I first
tried to install) and my desktop, where I have successfully installed.
Interesting but still not exactly what I hoped for. Would be nice if
"Blood relation" was actual relation - i.e. 5th great-great
grandfather. Would love to replicate Index View as a report to export
to spreadsheet.

Thanks all

Re: [LegacyUG] import/export into Excel

2013-09-02 Thread Bernd Hornung
It seems the download is only 10KB, definitely no where near the
advertised size of 13561K. Also, I have never dealt with Microsoft
ClickOnce Application Deployment Support Library.
Downloaded an earlier edition (host site does not have previous
versions) and have not had any success there either. Framework 4 installed.

Ah well, maybe it's not meant to be.

I think I will use the db as an event source (birth, death, etc) and cite
the given source (the one I have not seen) as a source to . One
of the cited sources is FindaGrave so I can go to the Source directly

[LegacyUG] 2nd hand sources

2013-08-29 Thread Bernd Hornung
I recently found an online database at RootsWeb that has relevance to my
wife's family. In the database they provide sources for various pieces
of information. My question would be - can I cite the original source
they provide, or should I use the the database as source. I don`t want
to tread on toes but would like to have genuine sources.

Through this db I discovered that my maternal 3rd cousin is also 6th
cousin to my wife.

Spent a lot of the day going through my DBs and doing some linking and
updating.

Two questions:

1. What does the heart symbol mean in the name list? I thought at first
that it was direct lineage but that does not seem to be the case.
2. Adding an event, in my case confirmation, does not appear to
register on the right hand column, but I think it does in the

Re: [LegacyUG] Version 8

2013-08-06 Thread Bernd Hornung
The limitation of split view vs. separate windows, is that you can only
open one detail view at a time. For instance you cannot compare two
"individual's information" or source pages. You can open separate
windows in that 'other program' with full functionality in each (but I
still prefer Legacy).

[LegacyUG] Events description

2013-07-07 Thread Bernd Hornung
I noticed today that there is an interesting difference between the
standard events (birth,Christening, marriage, death and burial) and the
added events. The added events have a description field that is missing
from the standards.
With added events, for example, I can enter a confirmation event with
the date, place and with the description I can enter the church name.
This way I get a statement (amended) that would read that "Susie Q was
confirmed at XY church on Jan 1, 1901 in Such, Country".
So why do the standard events not have a description field so that one
could get "Susie Q was baptised at XY Church on Jan 1, 1901 in Such,
Country" or "John Q buried in MM graveyard on Jan 1 1901 in Such,
Country" or " John Q and Susie Q were married in XY Church on Jan 1,
1901 in Such, Country"? Or am I missing something altogether?

At the same time I noticed that the added event has two small columns of
which one indicates that there is a source given. This would be nice to
see beside the standard events as well. I would also envision that the
source could be noted as an S1, S2, S3 or S4 indicating the level of the
source as input on the source citation.

Thank you Lee. That might help explain why some my ancestors married
less than 9 months before the birth of a child. They were proving that
they could do it and not just kanoodling behind the woodshed - lol.

[LegacyUG] Commonly used Christian name

2013-06-18 Thread Bernd Hornung
Is there a way to highlight a commonly used Christian name?

For example: birth name is John Edward Frederick Smith.

He is referred to as Frederick Smith in marriage record, census and/or
death notice. Perhaps to distinguish him from his father John Edward
Frederick Smith, called John.

Something that would be apparent: John Edward /Frederick/ Smith. John
Edward *Frederick* Smith. John Edward _Frederick_ Smith. etc.

Thanks

[LegacyUG] Index view

2013-06-10 Thread Bernd Hornung
Playing around with various aspects of Legacy I came across the Index
View and discovered that one could add columns and move the columns
around. But, what I would like to do is have the relationship column
come first (which I have done) and then have it sort by relationship
(i.e. list all the same relationships together) so that all the 6th
great grandfathers are all together, for instance. Doesn't do this.

So the next question is: is there a report that does the same thing? I
can't find one.

I have an Excel spreadsheet prepared from the program I used to use and
have it set up with Name, Relationship (to me), date and place of birth,
confirmation, ,marriage and death. I then highlighted the events for
which I have the documentation. This helps me identify where some more
searching needs to be done.

http://www3.telus.net/hornunghouse/Heldt%20Documentation.html

My dream would be that Legacy did this automatically where if I note a
source document with a certainty level of 3 or 4, it would shade the
event. This way one could see immediately where documentation is
needed. Just a thought.

Related to this I am slowly moving my document images to the Legacy docs
folder and linking them to the individual. At the same time I can
verify the data and determine if the image comes from before I started
using Zotero and therefore no citation information. Drag and drop would
be easier.

Thanks for "listening".

Re: [LegacyUG] Appropriate ancestral town location

2013-06-09 Thread Bernd Hornung
I have similar issues with German locations before the unification.
Documentation is based on the locations used at the time so States such
as Prussia now do not exist. I also have issues with locations in the
Baltic States where the documentation refers to the German name for the
location but in order to find the place, the program needs the current
identification to find it on the map. It is nice to be able to locate
the place to see where they may have moved to or what other places are
nearby.

It would be nice to have and option to add an alternative name (as used
in the person options) and have it linked to the current geo location.

Re: [LegacyUG] Marriage Search

How about a more complicated search? I know that somewhere in my
database are siblings that were born within the same calendar year - but
I can't remember anything about them. I want to do a blog about the
rarity of this event but don't have the starting point - who they are?
Might even work for finding twins.
Any suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Historic Surnames

2013-05-29 Thread Bernd Hornung
I was thinking of opening this line of discussion at some time as I have
also pondered how to best handled the "vons, van ders, etc" in Legacy.
Putting the von in the surname comes out OK in reports (as far as I can
tell) but it appears as the surname when you do an Internet search of
FamilySearch, either site. But, if you put the von as prefix or suffix
it just doesn't look right in the Family View.

I have several "the Elder", "the Younger" or even "I-II-III" and use the
suffix for this. I do use the prefix for "Doctor, Professor, or noble
title".

Lee - I was thinking of Ivan the Terrible as an example, but yours is
better.

There is so much to learn in switching to Legacy that it is sometimes
overwhelming, but these discussions have been helpful. Thanks to all.

Bernie

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: Chart showing occupation

2013-04-30 Thread Bernd Hornung
I am not sure if this is totally relevant to the discussion, but I have
found that in some instances it is important to know the occupation of
an individual (usually the father) in order to make a clearer
identification. I am using very old church records and they quite often
list the father's occupation with his surname and not his given name.
Therefore you have to know whether it is Shoemaker Smith or Furrier
Smith. Another odd thing about these records is that the mother's name
is not given but the names of the godparents is.

Re: [LegacyUG] GenDexNetwork.org Supports Legacy Gendex Files

2013-04-15 Thread Bernd Hornung
I actually thank him for his post. Quite indirectly it led me to a
government archive of church records and have so far found the marriage
record for my paternal 3rd great grandparents. I didn't know the site
existed and will be putting Zotero to work again. One never knows where
a key to a locked door can be found.

[LegacyUG] New to Legacy

2013-02-26 Thread Bernd Hornung
I have recently purchased the latest version of Legacy Family Tree
having used Family Tree Maker for years. There are many functions in
both that I appreciate but also differences that can be confusing.

To start with I have two questions:

1. What is the best way for Legacy to handle "von" or "von der"? I am
not totally pleased with the way name prefix or suffix does this. I
would prefer to have the main part of the name, i.e. Bruck rather than
von Bruck, but still have the von recorded. This does significantly
affect the search on FamilySearch.

2. On import of .ged file there seemed to be some errors that placed
dates or other information in the places database. I have corrected the
individual records but these false places are still listed and I can't
find a way to erase them.

Thanks

Bernie
