Re: [LegacyUG] How to configure Family View ?

2023-10-22 Thread Margaret Turner
For the number of children displayed,
I use Custom, Option 8, 8.5 Child Columns on View, Best Fit Columns
This allows a 12 children family to be displayed in 3 columns.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to query in 7.5

If you are willing to plunge into the world of SQL !!!
I am of no help in SQL :(
here is a working example from Ltools (now free) which works only in Legacy
7 (hence my dependence on 7.5) http://zippersoftware.com/wp/
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/ltools/conversations/topics/1022

Finding persons died under age 15
SELECT IDIR, BirthD, DeathD, DateValue(Mid([BirthD],5,2) & "/" &
Mid([BirthD],3,2) & "/" & Mid([BirthD],7,4)) AS BirthDate,
DateValue(Mid([DeathD],5,2) & "/" & Mid([DeathD],3,2) & "/" &
Mid([DeathD],7,4)) AS DeathDate INTO tempAges
FROM tblIR
WHERE ((IDIR<>0) AND (BirthD Like "00*") AND (DeathD Like "00*") AND
((Mid([BirthD],3,2))<>"00") AND ((Mid([BirthD],5,2))<>"00") AND
((Mid([DeathD],3,2))<>"00") AND ((Mid([DeathD],5,2))<>"00"));

I do this just to make the next query easier to read.

SELECT IDIR, BirthD, DeathD, DateDiff("",[BirthDate],[DeathDate]) AS
Age INTO tblAges FROM tempAges;

Subject: [LegacyUG] Resizing photos the Geoff way

Some time ago in a webinar Geoff showed us how to resize photos to a
 uniform
size by using Photoshop Elements and dropping one correctly-sized photo
 onto
a larger one in the Project Bin.

I have performed this manoeuvre many times and successfully produced a
 nice
set of matching-size pictures to use in Legacy. I have also ATTEMPTED
 to do
it several times and not succeeded. What happens sometimes is that I do
Ctrl-A then try to slide the pic from the main window to the one in the
 Bin
and instead of this working as it should, the main window photo appears
 to
slide off it's canvas, leaving a white space on the screen.

I cannot for the life of me work out what I am doing wrong because I
 think I
am following the same process every time. Any suggestions?

[LegacyUG] Can I have both Legacy 7 and Legacy 9 running concurrently (different data file)?

2017-04-18 Thread Margaret Turner
I understand installing v9 deletes v8.
I would like to have both versions instlled.
I would do changes in v7, and when required, copy legacy data file and open
it (ie no updates) in 9.
Then I would go back to work on v7 data using v7

I am dependent on ltools.

Thanks

I have tested a long path/filename string in Legacy. I created a long

previously linked the file to a person in Legacy 8.0. I used the media
relinker to rebuild to link to the picture and did not get any
unsupported format message. I then added characters to the file name
until Windows would not accept any more. In this way I think I hit the
windows limit on path/filename length. This time, since the file name
was different I told the legacy I would look for the file myself. I
browsed to the long folder/filename and linked it without problem.

I did not count the characters in the path but I am satisfied that
Legacy can use the longest path allowed by Windows and will not give any
 unsupported format message.

Can anyone tell me where to look in Legacy so I can sort out the missing

With regard to sources and tng.
1. If any event is sourced, then they have a footnote suffix,
2.These numbered sources are listed at the bottom of a person's page

(I use Legacy 7, basic sources and my reserach dates from late 1997 so I

PS I use Legacy as my database, upload gedcom to tng, and customised the

I envision using my website to document a line one at a time, uploading

probably not all. I liked Pat Hickin's tree at wikitree for this

Two basic types of family tree sites exist: static pages and dynamic

Static pages means you create all of the pages

you wish to use. After you create the pages on
your PC; you then have to upload all of the pages
by FTP (or some similar tool) to your hosting
service. You may wish to create some pages as
home pages to tell your story. The disadvantage
of this technique is that it does not scale well.
As the size of your family file gets bigger, you
have more and more pages. Further, many of them
will be small and, as a result, consume large amounts of hosting
  space.

In the late 1990s, a program was created called
IGM by Randy Winch. The idea behind IGM was that
you uploaded your Gedcom file to your hosting
service along with the IGM software and had IGM
process your Gedcom and allow you to have IGM
create your web pages dynamically as visitors
requested them. Randy enhanced IGM for RootsWeb
and that is what RootsWeb's WorldConnect service is using.

In the early 2000s, two software products were
created to take the IGM experience to a higher
level. They have the limitation that the hosting
service has to support php scripting MySQL
databases that not all free or cable company
hosting provides. They also expect the user to
have, or have access to, some basic webmastering
skills. Both require a quality hosting service
and for you to acquire a domain name for your site.

One is the OpenSource product phpGedView. This
has the advantage that it is free. It is also slow.

Thanks Don.

No I can FTP the images to the tng docs folder, as in one major upload. The
media links are in the legacy-generated gedcom that is uploaded.

On my desktop, using Legacy 7.5 still, I have turner/docs/turner,
turner/docs/mellor, ... etc.for each of my major family surname groupings.
I have turner/photos/turner, turner/photos/mellor, ... etc.for my major
surname photos.
Other tng users may have their documents organised by type, eg.,
 docs/census, docs/certificates, ...

I changed the organisation of my folder names on legacy desktop, made sure
all images linked OK, using ltools and the legacy option.
Just need to reload new gedcom, make sure I have uploaded all the images,
generate all thumbnails (press of button in tng admin menu).

 Don,
 Yes it does, e.g.
 http://turnermob.com/showsource.php?sourceID=S192tree=turner.

 Note.
 1. Many would consider an overkill, but I create a legacy custom event
'Document' so that that it displays in legacy reports for the person, and
on an individual person's web page:
 http://turnermob.com/getperson.php?personID=I245tree=turner

 2. tng will not display the image as part of the sources listed at the
bottom of the individual person's web page, but it does when you click on
 the particualr source ie.
 http://turnermob.com/showsource.php?sourceID=S192tree=turner.

 3. I'm a splitter.

 4. The web site is in the process of being updated, so not all documents
have been uploaded to the web site.

 GREETINGS, ALL

I have no opinion about the ability (or not) of Legacy to 'source'
photographs. But I DO have an opinion about the best way to provide source
info for a photograph; put the source information in the image metadata.

Metadata is the data about the data image; the text information that
accompanies each image, JPEG or whatever. The metadata allows us to attach
everything from our street address to the subject of the photo to the
technical info about the photograph ... to the source of the photo. I believe
any useful information associated with an image has a place somewhere in
 the metadata.

Most modern image processing or image viewing programs allow access to
the metadata, yet too few of us use this important feature of digital
imaging ... myself included. I know I should type the stuff into the
appropriate fields but too often I grow bored and move on to more exciting
things. Doesn't matter if you follow the approach of Elizabeth Shown Mills
or not; just put something in the metadata that will allow someone else to
know where you found the image (even if it is from your personal collection
 of photographs).

*Bottom line; put sourcing in the metadata no matter what other sourcing
 you may do !!!*

What steps did you follow when you were doing back ups?
Joan, I have only V7 so this is how I could do a backup in two ways:
1. Using the menu option across the top of the screen
File | Backup File
Do you remember if you had Data Files selected
and do you know which drive it save to (you mentioned a CD - is this your
backup or the Legacy-purchased installation CD?)
2. When you closed your legacy program, and it may have prompted you to do
a backup.

This may help you to assist others in trying to solve your problems:

Re: [LegacyUG] Media Relinker

2013-12-30 Thread Margaret Turner
As I have a number of different family files that I use Legacy for, each
with their own specific folders (and hence sub folders) - I'd hate for
legacy to want to search my entire drive 1.81 Tb drive wanting to relink
images.

Curious as to whether there would be any difficulties from a programming
perspective in allowing the user to set which specific folder or folders
the Media Relinker is allowed to search as opposed to letting it search the
 whole system.

We can already tell it which drives to search (or not) and we can already
check / uncheck for it to search Windows system folders, surely the ability
to limit the search to a user defined folder is just the next step?

I keep my genealogical image files in one very specific folder, granted it
has a number of sub-folders, but they are all in that single parent folder.

I would infinitely prefer to have Legacy search that parent folder and
it's sub-folders only as there is no reason at all for it to search
 anywhere else on my computer.

 Thoughts? Opinions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Report with images

Jay,

I made a custom cemetery event for my database, so that any grave photo
would print out in a descendant book report.

Are these people genetically linked in any way? Eg. groups of families at
same burial plot.

Maybe use ltools to change cemetery event to burial ?? (haven't tried this!)

So then could you do a multiple descendant report with cemetery event with
large image in the report.

Re: [LegacyUG] Photos not embedded in the reports

2013-05-26 Thread Margaret Turner
I think the maximum file size of a Word 2010 file is 32 Mb.
This is a Word limitation not a Legacy problem as Legacy is generating
it as a generic RTF file.

Maybe the original RTF files needs to split into separate documents.
Then have one master document to read theses sub documents

We found that we cannot use Word 2010 to do the reports because the files are

Would someone either respond publicly or privately to me. We are supposed to
send the 23 lines and introduction to the publisher by the end of this week.

Also we noticed that despite the fact that we checked to only include User ID

of hours just removing the MRINs alone. Any idea how to get them not to show
 up in the reports?

I tried to update my program from one last year to the current one, and now

Then the program clears that message. I again select the file I want to

A little more explanation - I caused some glitch in the normal update of
 the
program in the deluxe edition, but downloaded the updated version - it
 seems
like there was a minor problem in that, and evidently there was because of
the message that my file was a later version than was expected. Evidently
 it
was not completed correctly, but now it won't open at all.

I am stumped, but I am continually amazed at the depth of talent on this
list. I am looking forward for that talent being used in my behalf.

To do charting, you need to buy the delux version.
In appearance, you can select colours as none.
You can publish that chart to a .pdf file so you can check out the result
without printing it on your computer (ie you can view it) as well as
putting the .pdf on a a flash drive to take to a commercial printer.
I tested it with 9 generations and al is OK.

see now only one child displayed and no means to scroll down to see their
 other children.

I've tried Options | Fonts | Screen Fonts then reset to default
which becomes stretch when resizing is ticked, min, font is 6, max is
 99).

I'm a little bit embarrassed about asking this question.

 Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Print book

The MRINs never change.

I have a number of Multiple Lines of Descents books that I produce

1. At the bottom of the first window it has *Change* (perhaps this
couldhave been worded as Select
this allows you to select the marriage ID of the top ancestor for
family A, B, ..

2. I select the required options: Index, Report and Title page

3. In the Report Settings I select Save (the save this as something
like multi_book_A_B)

4. It is your choice to run as PDF. RTF. etc which are save when you
save your report settings.

5. I run the report (Print/Create)

If I ever need to run this report again or have changed data, etc so
that I want to produce an updated copy, I run Multiple Lines of
Descent

1. In the Report Settings I select Load (multi_book_A_B).

The load and save buttons on all the report screens are for loading and
saving the settings for those reports not for a copy of the report
contents. Note that the buttons are surrounded by a box labelled report
settings. In the preview you have a create PDF button to create pdf

with the contents or on the report screen you can choose one of the

Re: [LegacyUG] preferred person displayed within a marriage

2013-02-26 Thread Margaret Turner
In Family View, for one of the spouses, click on the spouses icon

From Help
Setting a Spouse as Preferred
To move the Preferred setting to a different spouse, highlight the
spouse you want to set as Preferred and click Set to Preferred in the
lower left corner.

A Preferred spouse is the spouse automatically shown when their
husband or wife is selected or displayed on the Family or Pedigree
View as you navigate through your ancestors and descendants. This
avoids having to ask which spouse to display each time you change
generations. The spouse that is currently set as Preferred has an
asterisk in the P column of the Spouse List.

On 27 February 2013 12:30, Brian L. Lightfoot br...@the-lightfoots.com wrote:
I was a little puzzled about the answer here, namely that the preferred
spouse needs to be listed at the top of the sort order. A quick check of the
Legacy Help System says A Preferred spouse is the spouse automatically shown
when their husband or wife is selected or displayed on the Family or Pedigree
View as you navigate through your ancestors and descendants.. Note that
there is no mention of the requirement to move the preferred spouse to the
top. I always thought that the Spouse List was merely a means of keeping
the chronological order correct as it would show in various reports and in
 the human brain.

So, I played around in the sandbox a little. Went to somebody that was
married several times. As I re-designated a different spouse as the
preferred one, I jumped elsewhere in the file and then came back. Each and
every time, the preferred spouse is the one that would automatically display
regardless of the sort order. Not surprising because, after all, that's just
what preferred is supposed to do.

So back to the OP's message. He claims he has changed the preferred
designation but Legacy is not following its own rule. That indeed would seem
to indicate that something is wrong. I suspect the OP is not following the
procedure correctly to designate someone as a preferred spouse. Maybe a
little more follow-up from the OP would be in order.

Is there anything better than Adobe Photoshop Elements for adding IPTC
information to scanned images that one wants to use within Legacy? Can you
add IPTC information with Heritage Collector or Legacy? It is my
understanding that if you enter the information via Adobe Elements, it will
 transfer Legacy.

Take a look at the chart on the Ancestor tab in Reports. That's basic

What you're referring to is the book report, which is much larger.

Re: [LegacyUG] Caption under image

Another possibility is to copy your Legacy captions to the images themelves
is to use a deluxe feature of Ltools
http://zippersoftware.com/wp/ltools/current-ltools-features/deluxe-ltools-features/

Set IPTC Data – copies Legacy Caption, Desc, Date, FileID, Surnames, and
UserIDs/RINs from Legacy to the attached JPEG’s IPTC fields.

This will add IPTC data directly to each .jpg image

go to the source with the census image attached
Edit
left tab Pictures tab will have an * - click on the pictures tab
down in the bottom right hand corner you'll find the image name .jpg

Use Windows explorer to find the .jpg on your drive.

Another way:
Options | Customise | Locations
View Current List of Multimedia Locations
this will list all the file paths used
if not many then search in these directories/folder paths

PS. I use upper case for all surnames and do not have this error

So it may have been dates rather than Surnames in upper case
In date fields, double prefixes such as Born before 1853 or Died
after 1903 can also cause run-time error 3260.

The solution for the date problem is change them to single prefix
dates such as “Before 1853” or “After 1903” from a Search List. Click
on Search on the menu bar and select Find. Next click the
Miscellaneous tab, then select 'All records with bad dates' and click
Create List. Fix the bad dates.

I never thought of the formats as European vs American. I've always
used the 21 Nov 1853 format in my genealogy research as that was the way I
was taught to do it when I first started in the late 1960's and it appears
 to be a genealogy standard.

When recording dates, use the accepted European standard of DAY, MONTH
(spelled out) and four digit YEAR. This is different, for example, than most
Americans are used to entering dates. Do not enter dates using a number
format. If you enter a date as 02/01/01, people will not know if you meant
February 1 or January 2 or if you meant 1801, 1901 or 2001. Example: 30
 June, 1993

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding homosexual partner in Legacy.

2010-01-01 Thread Margaret Turner
Luis,

There a 2 ways.

1. Export to a gedcom file only the partners involved (eg. tag the 2
records involved and export these tagged ecords). Change the sex on
the gedcom file of one of the partners (using a text editor) then
import this gedcom file back into your legacy file so that you have a
same sex marriage.
More details here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergr...@legacyfamilytree.com/msg35203.html

2. If you have Access or OpenOffice then you can modify the sex on the
tblIR file/table.
More details here: http://www.moss-fritch.com/legacy.htm

Despite repeated uninstall/reinstall while my Norton Internet Security is

I have switched printers using the Control Panel.
On the Legacy Users archives, only one other similar problem, but this

The message implies I need to define a printer for use with Windows.

Can someone explain how to do this?
