[LegacyUG] Military interment records sourcing
Good morning, Ancestry has images of the US National Cemetery Interment Control Forms. I tend to use Source Writer for my sourcing, but I'm not averse to using the Basic version. Any suggestions as to how best to record this source information? It's kind of an awkward record. Thanks. [LegacyUG] US census master source
Good morning, I'm just looking for input. How do you handle the US (or any other) census as a master source? It asks you to break it down by locality, state and county. If you are dealing with diverse areas of the country, how do you differentiate the carious localities. Basically I'm wondering if anyone has a more efficient system than mine. For instance, I list the 1880 census for Randolph county, Indiana, as 1880 US census [IN - Randolph]. It makes for a LOT of census entries. Any ideas, suggestions, etc, or am I making the best of an awkward source? Here's a thought as a stop gap. Can you mark both genders as unknown and add the actual gender in notes? Not ideal, but it should solve the problem in the short run. Re: [LegacyUG] Generational migration patterns
It looks like the Google Fusion Tables option might work, which leaves the question of how to get the data onto a table. Here's the first glimmer of an idea. Please let me know what you think of my thought process. Can I run a descendant outline, save it as an RTF file, and then import that into the spreadsheet? A little editing to the RTF may put it into the right format. From there I can try other methods to interpret the data. Thanks for the information thus far. [LegacyUG] Generational migration patterns
I have been doing a study of all the descendants I have been able to find of one ancestral couple. In about a year and a half I have gathered some 6000+ descendants. I am thinking it would be interesting to see, visually, how they disbursed from the central point that is the home of the original couple, i.e. Montreal. What I am looking to do is two-fold. First I need to generate some sort of report which will give me location breakdowns by generation. Then I am looking for a way to map them which will allow me to color code the generations. I have, thus far, 13 generations from that base-line couple. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I know that Legacy has the capacity to give me the information I need, I just need to figure out the semantics. The mapping is another thing altogether, and I realize that it is partially off-topic. I know that Legacy will show me locations on a map, but can I save those maps, or build on them, or will I need to go to an outside program? Google Maps might have the capabilities I am looking for, but it is not necessarily the most user friendly interface. I've been on Family Tree for nearly a year now in beta. Yes, changes made in nFS will also appear in FT. The only thing I have heard conflicting stories about is whether your nFS sources will transfer. Anyone looking to check out FT can contact me off-list and we'll see what we can do. I'm looking forward myself to see what Legacy does with FT. I would love to see some kind of Source Box integration (hint hint). I have a related question to using SourceWriter for US Census data. If I use the template as written, how do I differentiate between the source for San Bernardino, California and the one for Renssalear, New York? Just curious as to what others do. [LegacyUG] Universal Source?
I have a weird question. I have a friend building me a Legacy file of names from a specific inigration event (a ship and travel list) which will include almost 500 families, and over 1500 people. Once I have that, I will be doing descendancy research on those families for a historic recreation. Does anyone know if it is possible to add a single source to all events recorded when I get the file, or will I need to go through event by event and add the website information she is getting the data from for me? [LegacyUG] Fixed, cascading pedigrees
Good morning all! First of all, thanks to everyone who helped with my last question. Preparations for my class are well underway and I feel considerable more confident now than I did a week ago, thanks to all of you. Some former PAF user have come to ask me if Legacy can fix the numbering in a cascading pedigree chart. I was a little confused but apparently this means that it will leave holes where the missing charts would be, i.e. if charts 2 and 3 were not used it would hold those numbers but would continue on with numbers 4, 5, etc., thus allowing for the insertion of subsequently discovered information without the massive reprinting of the entire pedigree chart. I'm not certain if I have expressed this well. I can picture it in my mind, but expressing it on paper is a little more difficult. Is this a feature that Legacy can do? Apparently RootsMagic doesn't, and my compatriots are looking for an easier outlet than GEDComming their files out to PAF to print the cascading pedigrees. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. I am now going through and (finally) standardising all 2300 records to the Source Writer template, but I have it a snag, and it's going to continue. There aren't enough Location options. These records are Canadian church records, which means that I have an extra layer in there. Quebec has three St-Michels that I can think of, and without the county included, specifying which one is going to be difficult. So I'm throwing this problem out for suggestions. My initial thought was to do something along the lines of St-Michel [Bellechasse] in the city/town/village line, but I'm not certain that's the way to go. Any alteratives? Once I do these I really don't want to have to re-do them. And France will follow the same pattern, or worse, with between four and six levels. Thanks. [LegacyUG] Challenge #2: Changing place names
Hello again, all, On to my second challenge. I checked through the archives as best I could, but I just couldn't figure out the best search parameters I guess, so here goes. Much to the diappointment of my DAR friends, my ancestors didn't come to the US until the middle of the 19th century, for the most part. They stayed in Canada (or Ireland, but I haven't found them) until all the major unpleasantness was over with. But that means they were in Canada through all the name and governmental changes. As an example, Louis Bourgois (b 1707) fled the English occupation of Port-Royal, Acadia 1733 and resettled at Fort Ste-Marie, Acadie. There they remained until he and his family round-up of the Acadians in 1755. Louis took the loyalty oath and was allowed to remain in Fort Frederick in Acadia. Louis died just before Fort Frederick was burned to the ground and Fort Howe, Nova Scotia was built to take its place. His children and grandchildren would grow upa and die successively in Fort Howe, New Brunswick and Saint John, Saint John County, New Brunswick. Louis himself doesn't exist, but his situation does, over and over again. The conundrum I find myself with is this: Does anyone (or everyone) track these changes, or do you go with the standardised, modern place names for most places outside the US? I know that sound US-centric to those of you outside the US, but I only ask because of the county reminder thing-a-ma-bob. Thanks for your input. Re: [LegacyUG] Source Writer challenge
I see that the Legacy GeoLocation database is not very helpful, as a search turns up Saint-Michel, , Québec, Canada. If you put Bellechasse in the county position, the search comes up blank. In fact, counties seem to be totally ignored for Canada. Wikipedia says that Bellechasse is a regional county municipality, so it would seem reasonable to create a location as either Saint-Michel, Bellechasse, Québec, Canada or Saint-Michel-de-Bellechasse, , Québec, Canada. Experiment with how you will want to sort your eventual location list, including reverse order. Ward Ward, This goes to my second question of the day, about location name changes. The Bellechasse county designation no longer exists. So this adds another layer to my question. Place at the time, or place now? Larry, When you input the couple, when the time comes to input the date, in the upper lefy hand corner is a little check box which reads This couple did not marry. Re: [LegacyUG] Sorting Children
I generally put children with unknown dates at the end of families, rather than at the beginning. It makes it easier to find them when researching a specific family or, frabjous day, I accidentally stumble across their record, which happens more frequently in Québécois research than your standard US type. Then I can move them into the correct position. Another curiosity question re: children without dates - how do you order them when you have several. Alphabetically? As you find them? Date guess-timate? Think of this as kind of an informal poll. [LegacyUG] Updating images
Good afternoon, all, Here's a question I haven't been able to find addressed in the archives, so I throw it out there for your ideas. I know they won't print worth a darn, but I am attaching digital images much of my back-up proof to my events as I can. Some of these images have been attached for some time. They are Quebecois parish records and can have anywhere from 8 to 30+ records on an image. To make it easier for my family, with whom I am sharing this data (and who don't read French), to find the correct record, I have been going through each image, highlighting the record in Paint.net and re-saving the image (I also have saved a clean copy of the image - it's the purist in me). Now in some cases, the link is automatically udating to the updated images (about 25% of the time). The rest of the time I'm having to remove the original image and reattach the altered one. What am I doing differently the other 25% of the time? Any ideas? Is there a way to up this percentage and thus save me much time and energy? I have been through 750 records thus far, and I have about 4500 to go. Thanks for all the advice and help. [LegacyUG] Timeline help
I'm new to the list, so forgive me if this covers old ground (I couldn't figure out how to get to the archives, if there are any). I'm teaching a class on personal timelines, so I started creating one for myself. I figured it was a good place to start. I pulled my family group and four generations back of my and my husband's lines as background into a GEDCom and started a new file. Then I started adding information from my baby book and anywhere else I could find it to the Events/Facts box in my entry. I added my father's military service into his entry for kicks and grins. When I pulled it all together, it showed all my data, it showed my parent's deaths. It didn't show either of my parents' remarriages, any of my grandparents' deaths, my nephew's death, my daughter or son's marraiges, my granchildren's births, my graddaughter's death, etc. Is there any way to get Legacy to consolidate all the information that happened within my tree in the given timeline period to display, in this case, anything within those six generations from 1962 to present, all of which played a part in my life? Or are those all points I would have to add seperately into the Events/Facts area of the entry? Thanks so much. Re: [LegacyUG] Timeline help
Okay, so if I'm following the logic here, by rights I should be able to export a new GEDCom with all the updated data. I should then be able to turn thatinto a .txt file which I can inport into an Excel spreadsheet, eliminate the data that refers to me, save it as a timeline into the timelines folder, and then access through that system? Does this sound about right? Or would it be easier if i just saved the timeline out as an .rtf and added my information in manually? And just off the cuff, I've added pictures to several of these events, homes I've lived in and such. Can I get those to print on the timeline or chronology reports? Thanks again. Maureen Lake Maureen, As you have found the standard timeline construction which you have used, and I am assuming that you are referring to the output from the Chronology Tab, will only include specific events which you can select using the options button on the right. On clicking that button you may have noticed, at the bottom of the Chronology Options screen a button named Select Background Timelines and if you click it it takes you to a list of timelines relating to all sorts of events, such as the British Monarchy, British Prime Ministers etc. etc. Now I know this is not what you want, but the great thing about it is that you can write your own background timeline using it. Clicking the Help Button tells you how. So, in Maureen's Timeline you can include all the information which isn't showing at present. If you want to look at the construction of these timelines, they are contained in C:\Legacy\Timelines\ (assuming you installed Legacy in C:\) and they are only text files, so you can open them in any text editor (even Notepad!). If you have Open Office Calc or Windows Excel then you can treat them as a CSV file use | (no quotes) as the delimited, you will also see that Legacy uses {/n} as line feed/carriage return.
