Find a copy of Guide to Genealogical Writing by Penelope Stratton and Henry
Hoff, published by NEHGS in 2014. On p 20 at the bottom of the page you will
see a perfect example of what a true ahnentafel report should look like. The
Ancestor Report in Legacy is just a reverse Descendant Report, not a true
ahnentafel which was the request of the person who started this thread.

I do not see anything on that page which defines a standard. The Article
is about the numbering system and how to convert to and from the number
to determine lineage.
I noted that the first published ahnentafel (1590) is a pedigree style
chart. The example in the article does not quote any standard for its
display method so all it adds is another possible layout of the report.

Thx, Brian - I have the book because I'm part of a study group at the Dallas
Genealogical Society (Dallas, TX). This year our focus is on writing a family
history and the book is one of several we are using. This week we are creating
genealogy reports using the various software programs that the members of the
group use. It was coincidence that an ahnentafel report came up at the same
time this discussion did.

If anyone is interested, it's a SIG called the Brown Bag Group and information
on it can be found at the DGS website:

Marianne please submit a suggestion quoting that book as the source for

Re: [LegacyUG] Custom Event Sentences in Legacy v8

2013-12-03 Thread mbstx
Hi, John - great explanation! I have a related question. Rather than use custom event sentences in 7.5, when creating an Event, I use the Sentence Overide tab option putting [Notes][Sources] in the text box there. Then I write my own sentence(s) in the text box for the Notes tab - that way the sentence reads exactly as I like. Will I still be able to do that in V8?Marianne-Original Message-

Kathy, Kurt, et al,
In part because of Shared Events, a lot of changes were made to Event
Sentences.
Let me walk you through some of the changes.
1/ Option 7.10
With L8, the default sentences no longer have the [Notes] and [Sources]
fields included, UNLESS YOU WANT TO INCLUDE THEM... (see
below...)
This option, allows you to set which order in your sentences you want to
arrange those fields.
2/ Creating an event - Note can be included optionally.
When you create an event, you now have an option to not add notes to a
sentence. There is a checkbox at the top, that by default is checked,
that when unchecked, the Notes are not displayed when the sentence is
created.
3/ Editing an event - Add the notes.
When you edit an event, you have a checkbox that allows you for that
instance to not display notes when the Sentence is constructed.
4/ Editing Role Notes - 2 checkboxes
When you edit a role for a Shared event, you can elect to include in the
sentence, either the Main Notes or the Role Notes or both.
Back to Editing an Event Definition...
5/ Note the preview window that should show you what your sentence will
look like. Note you can decide what type of event it will be.
And note the little blue dot that brings up a file you can edit that
provides text for the various replacement strings, if you feel a personal
need to do that. If you do edit it, please save a copy of your edits, as
this file may sometime in the future get overwritten by a Legacy
update.
6/ Reset Button
This button brings up a menu of 2 choices -
a. Reset sentences to default
b. Reset sentences to that of another event. This I find exciting as it
allows me to load another event's sentences and then make minor edits -
or no edits - to work for new event.
Let me give an example:
I have customer events for "World War I Draft Registration" and
"World Ward II Draft Registration":
[EventName] for [Name] [onDate]
[~atPlace].[Desc][Sources]:If[Notes]::[CR][Notes]
I set the 8 sentences up for one of the events and just loaded the other
event from the first. With the [Event Name] field, no changes had to be
made at all.
Please note that the Condition _expression_ at the end of the sentence has
a different format in L8. L8's standard is to use angle
brackets, in place of [] square bracket, to enclose a
conditional.
:If[Notes]::[CR][Notes] is something I use with most of my events
so that, if I want note a line break inserted before the notes begin, it
does not appear if no notes are included with the instance of the
event.
L8 does not convert L7 [] conditionals to L8 conditionals, but
L8 syntax allows for either syntax. I switched mine over as I think the
 is easier to read.
Does this explain better what is going on with basic custom event
sentences and notes.
john.

However, even though everything is in there when I look to the right

I’ve checked it against all the other sources I have (where I chose

I then deleted this source entirely from both the death and birth

I ran File/Check/Repair and nothing came up.

 What’s happening?

Check the Master Source edit creen screen to see
if you have accidentally checked the box which excludes the Source from
Reports. It's bottom left of the screen.

There's a checkbox in almost the same position on the Source Details

If you have created a custom event in Legacy 7 you will have to add your
own event sentences, roles and the sentences for those roles for your
custom event after your file has been converted by Legacy 8. Legacy 8
will not transfer the event sentences for custom events from Legacy 7
because the sentence structures and rules on what is used have changed
so drastically.

When defining a custom event or role for an event there are options to
populate the sentences with a default set or to copy them from another
event or event role. We do try to make it easy to use the new feature.
In your case you could copy the event sentences from the Legacy Standard
Census events and the role sentences from the census as you add roles to
your custom event.

John, etal,

I have seen this discussion several times in the past and presented my thoughts to the compendium. I favor being able to assign the proper titles in the labels in Family View.

I dislike having to make my data 'fit' the software! I also prefer not to put minutiae in my notes for things the program should accommodate.

So, I agree. Relationship window is more correct. Allowing the use of relationship titles, as a marriage option, would enable the user to keep their data as they prefer.

Although I am 'old school' I realize we have moved into the 21st century and need to be able to use today's terminology within Legacy.

I think everyone knows that -- short of divine intervention -- it takes both an egg and a sperm to produce a human child. Also, it seems to me that one ought to be able to say that a woman never married AND that she had a child. I disagree - in many cases for men there is evidence of no marriage (census records, death certs, etc.), but rarely can you confirm no children. Ditto for me Cathy, using Dropbox. Against a highly unlikely

do back ups to another drive as well.

Â
Hi – I got a new PC in January, running
Windows 7. This is my primary place for all things Legacy.
Â
I also have a netbook that I only use when
I travel. The netbook still uses Windows XP.
Â
If I want to upload my Family File from my
PC to the netbook will there be any problems because the
  operating systems are different?
Â
When I want to do this, I save my PC
database to a flash drive, then upload that to the netbook, so
I have the latest information when I travel.
Â
I also use the netbook to add information
to the database after I’ve done my research. Then I would
save those changes to the flashdrive and upload the latest
file to my PC on my return.
Â
So I’m worried about problems going in both
  directions.
Â
I also have the Families app for my Kindle
Fire, which is great if all I want to do is see my Family
File, but it’s too hard to enter data on the Fire.

I do something I think is much simpler. On the Edit Event for dialog box, in
the lower half I click on the Sentence Overide tab.

In that box I put {Notes][Sources].

Then when I go back to the Notes tab I can enter a sentence or several
paragraphs in any way I wish.

Another LUGer suggested this some years ago and I've followed it ever since.

It really isn't too difficult to edit a Sentence Definition.

There are 2 elements to a Sentence: words that will never change (be
the same for every record) and words that will vary with each record.
For example, you could compose a Census Event sentence which will read:

He appeared on the England census on 30 March 1851 in Canterbury, Kent,
England.

for Joe Bloggs, or

She appeared on the Wales census on 07 April 1861 in Mold, Fintshire, Wales.

for Jane Doe.

If you looked at the Event Sentence which would create the above, you
would see:

[HeShe] appeared on the [Desc] census [onDate] [inPlace].

You will notice that all the words which vary from one record to the
next are enclosed in brackets. When you are in the Edit Event
Definition screen, you can select from all the options available for
what you want to appear in the brackets. Next to each option is a brief
explanation of what it will add to the Sentence.

To start building an Event Sentence that reads how you want it to,
choose one person in your family file and write down the Sentence as you
would like it to appear for him. Now underline all the words which
might be different if you were writing the Sentence for a different
person - these will be names, dates, places, pronouns (he/she) etc. Now
you will be ready to start building your Sentence in Legacy, selecting
the appropriate option for each underlined word.

If you get stuck, come back to LUG with an example of an Event Sentence
you want to create.

Thanks for the suggestion!

However, I don't always enter my own phrasing; for collateral relatives in many
cases the default phrasing is fine because I don't intend to include them in

Yes, that is a simple way, but if you edit the original Sentence in the
Master List it would save you having to open the Sentence Override tab
and type [Notes][Sources] every time. You simply put [Notes][Sources]
in the bottom field (labelled If Desc, Date and Place are empty.) I
have done this for a couple of Event Sentences, except that I preface
[Notes][Sources] with a bolded [EventName]: because that is how I like
my Events/Facts to start.

The relationships show up properly, I've gone to Options/Customize where there
are further instructions about setting direct line in bold, but the only report

The family screen doesn't have any names in bold that I can see. I have no

to run Legacy directly on a tablet or smartphone? (understandng that only a
Windows 8 tablet or smartphone, not existing Apple or Android devices would
 be potential candidates).

Re: [LegacyUG] No Death notes sources

2012-09-10 Thread mbstx
I agree with Paula. I want the sources I attach to Death Notes to apply there, not elsewhere. Why should I have to create an Alt. Death Event for a piece of information that already has a defined place in the fields? Does this also happen when I attach a source to notes in the Medical tab (eg relating to Cause of Death) in the General/Research/Medical option for notes? I haven't had time to check that out, plus I'm not a power user of Legacy, so it's sometimes hard for me to figure out these detailed discrepancies. Marianne-Original Message-

Setting aside the particular information Pat is entering in Death Notes (because I use Alt. Death events, too)...It bothers me, too, that the citation number for Death Notes does not print by the Death Notes in the FGR. You have to know to go back to the first page and look at the Death date and place citations. Further, within the citation itself (?) you have to indicate which piece of evidence about the death came from that source...? Is that how others do it?This is akin to multiple sources for bits entered in General Notes or Research Notes, but with the added complexity of the Death information not all being printed together on the FGR.--Paula in TexasResearching: Adair Baker Beasley Benson

Although there is a Death Notes box available and one can enter sources for the information you put there, when you click on the book icon (to get to the "Assigned Sources" window, there is no "Death Notes" entry.
The source you entered for "Death Notes" instead shows up under the "Death" sources. When you print an individual or other report, the "Death Notes" entry has no accompanying source citation.
So let's say I enter a death date as 1801 (as the most reliable) and give Source A. Then in the "Death notes" I say that other, less reliable, sources give a date of 1803 or 1805, and cite Sources B and C.
But when I print the report, it looks as though Sources A,B,and C agree on the 1801 date, and the less reliable sources I've mentioned go unidentified! What is the reason for not having separate sources for "Death Notes"?

Or a comma in place of the "city" if you don't know the city.It was merged into the city of Hampton in 1952.There's no reference to it being renamed to Northampton in 1642.

BUT the county verifier clearly shows "Elizabeth City" as a County in VA from 1634 to 1952! Parent county: original shire; no progeny counties; name changed to Northampton 1642.

I am not exactly sure, but the City of Hampton was incorporated as an
Independent City in 1908. Elizabeth City County still existed but more toward
Newport News which became part of Elizabeth City in 1928. Langley Air Force
Base is within the boundaries of the City of Hampton (Independent City). The

Marianne,

which I did, but the app itself on your Kindle Fire should update
automatically.

I just double checked the app and it shows v1.6.0, which is the latest

You can get the latest Families Sync at

I agree on the need for this type of chart. I have individuals who in their second marriage wed an individual who in their first marriage wed someone else from the same tree.Example: Regina Booms marries first Christian Hafenskeidt, marries second Henry Bruening. Henry's first wife was Christina Booms Siemen. Regina's father, Franz Booms, was the younger brother of Christina Booms Siemen. When Regina and Henry marry, their two ascendant lines both lead to common grandparents or grandparents-in-law. There is no way in Legacy charting to show this relationship - you must create two charts and compare them to be able to see this double relationship.Marianne-Original Message-

My question might be slightly off-topic, but here goes...I found my mom in the 1940 census earlier this month and am just now sitting down to enter the event/cite the source. The SW template detail asks for the Roll and the Page. I did not see along my "route" to pulling up the image on Ancestry (select state, county, city, ED) where the Roll or Page are indicated. Is this just a function of the images not yet having been indexed? Or did I miss something?Further, there is a "grayed out" description for what should be entered in the Page number field, but it is cut off... and of course if I click on the field, the description disappears entirely. The screen size on my Kindle Fire is very adequate. My phone is
another issue, but since my Kindle Fire is always by my side I
only use the phone for apps if I need internet connection and wi-fi
for the Kindle isn't available.

When I plan a research trip, I take my 13 laptop so I can enter right
into Legacy and it's much more convenient to type on. The onscreen
keyboard on mobile devices is really slow to use if you're a touch
typist, although I'm getting faster if I have the Kindle Fire situated
so I can type with two fingers instead of one.

Having a smaller laptop for the field is nice and I definitely don't
feel as if I'm lugging it around.

But the app on Kindle Fire is great for those unexpected research moments.

Sherry

My question to you Families app users: do you find it a hindrance while
you're out in the field doing some research looking at a smaller screen of
your Legacy file (in comparison to lugging a laptop around)? I'm considering
the 7- or 10-inch tablet as I don't think I could maneuver on such a small

If I am understanding you correctly, you are seeing the living people over in
the right pane (the box that shows what is actually up on FamilySearch)?

I tried this with my own file. I always suppress living on my filter. I
selected my grandfather. He still has 3 children living. On the right pane I
see all three of those living children. I never added them). So I went to
New FamilySearch and to see. Someone (not me) had added my three uncles that
are still living and that is why they are showing up. Other than sending an
email to the person who submitted the info and ask them to remove it, there
isn't much you can do.

OR are you talking about the LEFT pane, which shows what is on your computer
The living children DO show up here but you know they are living so don't add
them to nFS. Maybe that is what you are talking about? No, it apparently
does not suppress the living children of the dead ancestor.

Hi - I just tried nFS linking to it via my Legacy database. In the filters, I
selected Suppress living, which did eliminate living persons in the list.
BUT, one person in the list who comes up with a match has all of her children
displayed, including those who are still living. How do I prevent this
information from displaying?

Re: [LegacyUG] citing World War I draft registration cards

2012-03-21 Thread mbstx
Am I missing something? When I type in "598" I get the choice of three templates, but none of them actually assist in the wording below, or even truly match the fields to what EE says to use. You still have to enter the citation information details on your own, which means you have to be very careful to match the wording you've used previously. I find myself pulling out EE every time I have to source a WWI draft registration. Marianne-Original Message-

Using SourceWriter when adding a new source, in the 'What kind of
source do you want to site? :', type 598 for the templates on page

Hope this is what you are after.

My understanding is that there are a limited number of citations that can be saved to the source clipboard. Therefore (a) the saved citation would eventually go away, and (b) I then have to find an ancestor with the "perfect" citation to copy. If I'm wrong, I'd love to hear it. M-Original Message-

At least for now, could you Save the "perfected" citation as a source clipboard? Then when you have another WWI draft registration to cite, you could Load that one and replace the name and various numbers in the same place in that "Item of Interest" field? As well as if you used the Text or Comment fields to help perfect the citation... or even the over-rides... aren't those saved in the Source Clipboard, too? OR if you use this method, maybe make a citation that has a more generic "[NAME], [CARD NO.], [DATE SIGNED]..." in the "Item of Interest" field, and Save THAT one. Ditto on the Text or Comment or Over-ride boxes. Then Load it as you need to make a new citation.--PaulaFrom: Michele Lewis ancestor...@gmail.comTo: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.comSent: Wed, March 21, 2012 11:23:46 AMSubject: RE: [LegacyUG] citing World War I draft registration cards

Being grateful to the LDS for their records is one thing. For Legacy to actually change a user's record without their consent is quite another. BTW, I actually do use the full United States in my records - that is a choice I made. If Legacy next decides it should be United States of America (to distinguish from the United States of Mexico, which is the correct name for our friends to the south) I would be as upset as other on this forum are at the present situation. I think I misspoke in my earlier message. When looking at the 'View' -
'Master Lists' - 'Source…' - 'edit' - 'Edit Master Source Definition' -
and use the same 'name' for the 'Source List Name' and the 'Title', both
'names' will appear in the same numbered end note of a book - which appeared
to me to be duplications - perhaps not. Should an entry in 'Title' be
eliminated/omitted when it is identical to the entry in the 'Source List
Name'? It appears that if I leave the 'Title' blank when entering Master
Sources, the first appearance of the source in a book format will be the full
reference reading with subsequent end notes showing as a cversion of the
Master Source, somewhat like Michele indicated.

Identical source citations should not repeat in reports. There are certain
conditions that will cause them to do that but these can be corrected. To
get help from the LUG list you need to identify the specific report you're
generating, whether the repetition is in footnotes, endnotes or
bibliography, the format you're producing (RTF, HTML, or in the Preview).
If you'll be very thorough in posting the description of your condition
someone will surely be able to solve the problem.

 Hello

Does the Ibid. (repeats what is listed in the previous citations) work OK in
 reports?

I am trying to create an Ancestor book report for an ancestor and notice
that the sources at the end of this report are mostly of the same source so
it is repeating itself many times.

As I have already checked Ibid in
Options/Customise/Sources, it doesn't look that it is working in the report
 function.

I have just been checking the archives for this user group but cannot see
any recent posts . Can anyone confirm this?

 Many thanks,

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair

The Legacy backup collects all the various pieces of the database into a zip
file container. That zip file is smaller because of the techniques used in
the zip process but the container also preserves the file integrity. A zip
file will not open if it is corrupted or partial. External drive backups are
valuable but will not provide a saved version of your file should it be
necessary to return to an earlier edition of the database. The external file
would only be a backup of the last version saved. At times, an error is only
discovered days after the problem occurred and the current file and the last
backup are both infected.

Check/Repair is a very necessary procedure on any database. It determines if
file structures are properly connected. It does not repair data errors which
may be discovered in various problem reports. It does not change data. It
may remove incorrectly linked marriages, etc. Anyone who fails to run
check/repair on a regular basis is going to be surprised to find that the
computer programming is not flawless. Even if check/repair never finds and
fixes problems, it still needs to be run.

As a general rule, I believe that a clean Check/Repair should be completed
just prior to a backup so that if the backup needs to be restored, it can be
considered to be a clean database without structural errors.

RE: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair

2012-01-20 Thread mbstx
I keep several backups on a flash drive (each day as I finish entering data I
back up that day's work, which is day/time stamped; I then delete the earliest
of the other back-ups). I'm also backing up everything on my computer to Mozy
once a day.

Perhaps I could do a check/repair on the 2nd most recent back-up (or one of the
others) to see what crops up? Then I would know what the state of that one was
at least. If I then did check/repair prior to backing up my latest work, I
would only be a bit off if something goofy happens.

Does that make sense?

Marianne,
Very true. If your current database has errors in it and you have never run
check/repair, then all prior backups are suspect because they probably
contained the errors when they were generated.

Others have stated that they would backup before check/repair which is not a
bad idea but based on the above, if errors are found and fixed, then backups
of the cleaned database would be preferable to backups which might contain
errors.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to show parents and siblings of 'spouses' in a book?

2011-11-02 Thread mbstx
I add spouses as individuals because you never know what might pop up. Like
the man who married two women, each of whom are my first cousins twice removed,
and who both track back to my 2nd great-grandfather as a common ancestor.

I have noticed that a lot of people model relatives of spouses as
individuals in their tree. I can see where this might prove helpful when you
find a distant cousin who descends from that line. My own (perhaps selfish)
approach is to not model them but to mention them in the general notes for
that spouse. That way the information does appear in descendant reports, and
the clues and sources are there for someone who wants to do further
research.

There are some reports that will include the names of the parents of
spouses but there is no report in Legacy that will include siblings of
spouses.

This is probably a dumb question, however, I was recently provided a copy of
a Marriage Certificate privately held by an individual. I had previously
been to the County Clerk and photocopied the necessary information that was
recorded by the County Clerk for the same Marriage Record. My question
regards the appropriate Source Writer template for both of these source,
even though they are relative to the same marriage.

Should the privately held marriage certificate be recorded using the
Artifact template, and the Marriage Record maintained by the County Clerk be
recorded using the Marriage Certificate, Local Government template?

Are privately held Birth, Marriage, and Death Certificates considered
Artifacts, at least until verified by following up with the appropriate
county or state agency?

Thank you for your assistance,

I add the actual text into the "text/comments" field because it's a fast way to see the details of the source. Re: [LegacyUG] More thoughts invited on Event Sentences

2011-08-17 Thread mbstx
I don't design event sentences if I don't like the standard options. In the
Sentence Overide tab I put [Notes][Sources], then write whatever I like in
the Notes tab.

RE the date, it depends. If say, the actual date of the event is stated, I use
that, then make a note as to where I found it and attach the source. If the
source just gives the information I use the date of the source, again with an
explanation.

Subject: [LegacyUG] More thoughts invited on Event Sentences

I know that is is probably preferable to edit Reports in a wordprocessor
to get the best results and that many people do this. I don't often
have cause to print Reports but I like to have my Event Sentences
designed to produce a reasonably grammatical and sensible output
whenever possible. LUGgers recently assisted me towards the decision to
have separate Events with different wording, including some part of the
EventName in [[privacy brackets]] for Events which can be done by or
done to an individual.

Now I am turning my attention to Events - Facts, to be more accurate -
where the Source occurs after the person's death. For example, a son
or daughter marries several years after the father's decease and enters
his (the father's) Occupation on the Marriage Register. Another
example, a Will is probated a year after a person's death and the
documents state the person's home address. How do LUGgers handle such
Events/Facts?

Do you create an Occupation or Address Event and leave it undated? Or
do you put the date of the Marriage or Probate which is when the
statement was made about the person's occupation or address? Do you
do either of the above and add an Event Note such as This was stated on
his son's Marriage Certificate, 5 years after his decease?

I am contemplating the possibility of having 2 types of Address or
Occupation Event. One, the usual On date his Address was ... or On
date he was a ... and the other something along the lines of On
date it was stated that he had been ... or On date it was stated
that his address at the time of his death was ..., with perhaps an
explanatory Note.

As usual it will be interesting and helpful to see how other LUGgers
deal with these situations.

All of the translation teams have translated the Help files into their
languages and frequently respond with comments about something that
doesn't sound right. None of them have made mention of the location
of the feature being listed at the bottom as being inappropriate. Nor
have any of the beta testers.

I reviewed Help files in other programs and there was no consistency
in how they presented where to find a feature.

I don't pretend to know the logic of the programmer who writes the

list about this.

Sometimes knowing how entails reading the entire Help topic to learn

Michele, You may want to revisit the 67 other people.

When I create a new Master Source, I often Edit an existing source (in an
attempt to get some consistency) and when I Save I get the option to apply the
changes to ALL references to the source or apply to a NEW source entry. If
you did this and then clicked the wrong Save option you would have replaced the
Edited source with the new version.

Maybe not a real clear explanation, but

For SOME of my Slovak surnames I have been able to use the letters with accent

I,too, am struggling with my Slovak names. How are the rest of you showing
what the names actually are (especially surnames and village names)in Legacy
if you can't use the actual names with the diacriticals? In the village for
one family surname I am researching I have found the same surname as mine but
with a diacritical on a letter. And with the first names being pretty much
the same in the village, one could very easily take the wrong research path
for the lack of a mark. So, how do you let everyone know what those
diacriticals are? I have tried writing my notes in Word and copying them over
to Legacy notes, but the diacriticals do not copy correctly.

I started on Legacy with my husbands English, Irish and Swedish ancestors and
found Legacy a joy to work with. Now, working on my side of the family, with
all four of my grandparents coming from Slovakia, I am constantly frustrated
and have piles of paper documents that I can't enter correctly into Legacy.
What is a work-around to let everyone looking at my reports (or myself after a
Legacy absence)know exactly what specific names I am researching?

I am new to Legacy and thus have possibly missed something obvious. I am
unable to enter nor import names that include Polish national characters. The
answer from Legacy Support is: “ Currently Legacy will only work with Western
European fonts. Legacy was developed with Visual Basic 6.0 and our goal is to
port it to another programming language which will allow us to have full
Unicode support. ” Is there a work-around? – or is this genealogy software
really unable to correctly spell family and place names that go outside the
basic character set? Has anybody seen any activity on the part of Legacy
indicating that the statement about portation should be taken literally within
foreseeable future? Please note that I am not inquiring about international
versions of Legacy but rather about user-controlled data in the standard
version.

Which build do you have? Landscape orientation on the Page Setup tab

the Printer setup?

How well the report formats depends a lot on what's on the report -
pictures, amount of data for each individual, fonts, etc.

Dave told me that he's going to do a complete reworking of this report
to solve the formatting problems, but not right now.

Not perfect, but I used the Census template as a basis for making my
own Agriculture template. You can do this by:

1 Go to Sources
2 Select Add a new source
3 Enter Agriculture as your template name. It will warn you it
didn't find it, but that's fine- you just want the name entered.
4 Country = United States
5 Type of Census Record = Federal Census (Not exact, but close)
6 Year = 1850 Population (Again, not exact either, but close enough.)
make the Census template work.
7 Medium = Online Images.

Will that work for you?

I'm very impressed with your book. You say you "did a report from Legacy," but don't indicate if you used a Descendant Narrative, the Publishing Center, or something else. Your flow of events is very smooth andwell written - this is something I have struggled with when entering events in the hope of creating a good narrative (I use [Notes] [Sources] always to override the standard wording).
I recently had another problem when creating a descendant narrative for a proposed article. I saved it as an .rtf, then added additional narrative with sources in Word. However, I could never get the font of the footnote numerals both in the body copy and in the footnote to match what Legacy generates.
Did you have that problem converting Legacy to Open Office?

To make the book, I did a report from Legacy and then edited in OpenOffice (chosen because Lulu prefers a pdf and accepted Oo's version better than Word's). By doing this I was able to put in information or explanations, leave out information and generally do it closer to the way I wanted. If you want to see what I ended up with you can go to Lulu.com and search for Gwinner or Dunhaupt. Then click on the title to go to the book's page. Marianne,

If you use an outdated version we cannot help you with your problems. Dave
has had a blitz on bugs over the past month or so resolving issues. I am
afraid that unless you update you will have to find your own solutions, as
we cannot reolve bugs, only report them. When Dave resolves them the job is
done. There are very few bugs left in the current version and you have those

I once had this happen to me. What I finally came up with to fix it
was to unlink the couple and then re-link them. I did this using the
 Marriage List.

 Subject: [LegacyUG] Married 'Someone'

I have just been reading through a report I created yesterday (after
having converted pdf to doc, edited – or so I thought – resaved as
pdf, uploaded to my newly created wiki!) and have noticed that I have
the ubiquitous Fred married someone Mary Jane BROWN. I thought this
problem had been resolved some time ago. Originally I had an unknown
wife for Fred, but recently added a name. Obviously the someone is a
hangover from when her name was unknown. How does one resolve this
problem other than having to read through every report word for word
once it has been created. At the moment I tend to rely on Word’s
spelling error identifier to check for spelling errors, as well as
making any additions or deletions that I know I need – I’d prefer not
to have to check the wording of every marriage statement just in case
the extraneous ‘someone’ is in place.

 Cheers
 Jan

Re: [LegacyUG] Multiple marriages

2010-04-12 Thread mbstx
I have the bigger problem of folks who have more than one previous spouse (info
I can confirm as to the marriage taking place, but not the names). I use 1st
wife (or husband of , 2nd wife (or husbnd) of xxx, for the same reason
as Lionel notes below - easier identification in various lists and in indexes
at the ends of reports. Marianne

There are a lot of people here who do not like using Unknown in place of
an unknown name and Legacy itself suggests that you shouldn't do so, but
I have no compunction in doing so myself. In the circumstances you give

I expect several people will be along in a moment to tell you what they
 use rather than Unknown Unknown.

I don't like having several 'unknowns' in my name list. I prefer to name
them 'wife of x' then I can identify them easy in other lists.
From an information point of view they are not unknown because you know
they were the wife/husband of . It is just that you don't have the
data to supply their name.
