[LegacyUG] Researching - can't find Legacy

2022-08-09 Thread vbgarton
When researching from Legacy on my laptop - When I find something to add to
my tree from Ancestry or FMP - all other trees are suggested except the
Legacy on my laptop. I am unable to add what I have found to the Legacy on
my laptop instead it is trying to get me to go to the tree on Ancestry.

Restart your computer and set a default browser in Windows.
If you've still been using Internet Explorer that may be the problem.
Normally you would leave Options > Customise section 11 blank.

Valerie,
What do you want to do with it?
Do you want the names in Alpha order or as a Descendant Tree?
In Alpha order you need to tag the Descendants only using Advanced Tagging and
then go to the Name List and click Search > Show all tagged # - the Tag you
used.
Then Options > Print and just choose the name.
As a Descendant Tree - Reports > Chart Reports > Descendant and turn off Birth
and Death dates on the main Report screen. You may also want to click the
Report Options button and then the Format tab and use the Pack information on
one line option.

I presume you are using the British GRO records office BMD Index quarters
and Legacy has a date format for those.
Use the LAST month of the Quarter Mar, Jun, Sep and Dec followed by Q ie.
Mar Q then the year.

This is all explained in the Help file. Open help and search for dates, you
will see an entry for Quarter dates.

They seem to relate to media files included in the original genealogy program
that created the GEDCOM, but do not seem to include the file name.

Remember that the original standard that FamilySearch was designed some 30
years ago and never included some of the more modern ideas that we now have,
like media, shared events etc. As a result, all of the programs have built
their own extensions to deal with them. That includes Legacy which does add its
own records that other programs may not understand.

One of the options when you import a GEDCOM file is for Legacy to save data
records that it cannot import into normal Legacy fields and instead place them
into a Notes record on the person. These are all records that Legacy does not
know how to process.

Valerie,

They're not important. It looks like they may be details of media.
Perhaps you imported an Ancestry Gedcom? Just find and delete them. You can
search for Individual > Notes-General > Contains > OBJE: to find all
individuals that have these notes.

confirmed - but whether someone using the FS tree has.

When you use the Legacy FamilySearch Integration module, any time you confirm
that the FS tree person found is your person, the FS ID is added to your person
in Legacy. That's the only thing transferred. You have total control over other
data both ways.

If you have used Auto Match in LFS you'll have yellow arrows. You need to check
each one and unlink if it's found the wrong person. Some people find it highly
accurate and others, like me, highly inaccurate. It depends on your family and
perhaps where you live in the world. If you go person by person you may have a
better success rate - and you may as well as you should check the auto matched
people.
Or you may want to search on the website if it doesn't auto find the match and
then enter the found FS ID in Legacy. There have been some recent issues with
the matching via LFS.
I only attempt to link a group at a time and use the filters to get just the
ancestors or descendants of someone using the Edit button in the Left pane.
When you match someone you can use the chain links to link their surrounding
relatives to their equivalent in the FS tree. They show blue when already
linked or just a grey shadow when not.

No one should be duplicated in the FamilySearch tree but in reality there are
heaps of duplicates - many created by FS themselves as they added things like
Parish Register transcriptions into the tree. This means that if someone had 12
children baptised and were themselves baptised and married, they are in the
tree 14 times. Those 14 need to be merged by someone - and the spouse also
probably has at least 14 duplicates that need to be merged and each child is
duplicated multiple times ... It's a big job that I've only tackled for some of
my direct ancestors. You can merge in LFS though I find it easier to merge on
the website - but it still takes hours. I screenshot or write down the FS ID of
each child at least as I have too often found I've orphaned children and they
need to be reconnected. The FamilySearch help has guidance on how to do all
this. Merging duplicates is far easier than undoing incorrectly merged and
linked people. I did have a win this week. I messaged someone around Christmas
as I found they had my Matilda Harris born in London, marrying in Ohio in 1850,
having a child in Canada in 1851 whereas I knew she was single in London in the
1851 census and still single in London in 1871. They've sorted it out.

So no you don't enter more than one person or more than one FS ID in Legacy.

I have had to do some major editing from time to time - when I have changed my
mind about how to present some information, for example.

First of all, I would say don't panic about the amount of work you need to do,
just plan to take it slow and steady and tackle one thing at a time. Starting
with a Master List is a good idea. Select one - perhaps the Location list, and
gradually work through it, combining duplicates and correcting spelling errors.
If there's a LOT to do, plan to just tackle a certain number each session.
That way you will keep achieving small goals and be encouraged to carry on.

You might want to work on the Event Definition list in a similar way, modifying
the way some Sentences read to suit the way you want to present information

When it comes to making changes to specific people's records, use the Search
function to find all the people you need to work on, then apply an unused Tag
number to the list. As you correct the records, untag each person. Then you
can repeat this for a different set of people.

Hope that gives you a few ideas.

Jane,

I've already told you how you can remove all broken links.
Use Tools > Media Relinker and make sure the relevant checkbox is checked.
You may want to save the broken link log first so you know where you may have
to re-add media.
The link I gave you tells you how to understand that log.
In future, if you must rename images, use the Picture Centre to do it.
That way you won't break the link. Use the Rename on the Picture List tab and
not on the Attached Pics tab if you are renaming media that is attached to
Sources.

Use the Rename on the Picture List tab and
not on the Attached Pics tab if you are renaming media that is attached to
Sources.

To control the Chronology Report, on Chronology View, click the Options button
then the Display options and see the various tabs including the Report Options
tab.
When you preview the Report you can save as PDF.
The Report option directly under the Options button uses the options already
chosen.

Valerie is this doing the type of thing you mean by Timeline? Note that there
is Timeline Chart Report under Reports > Other Charts that shows you who is
alive at the same time. It has two options - Ancestors or Descendants.

You need to clear the findmypast cookies in your browser.
If you don't know how to selectively delete cookies, you'll need to delete
all cookies - which means you'll need to sign in to all sites again.
In your browser settings in the Privacy section you should find where you
can view all the cookies. It normally has a search option and you search for
findmypast and then delete those cookies.

Terry,
You can see the modified date on Family View if you hover near the extreme
bottom right corner - you should see a small box pop up like the boxes that
show when you hover between the main couple etc. Each of these hidden areas has
a different function. Click the box and you get more detail. To see more on how
to see this go to Help > Help Index and in the right pane choose Tips and
Tricks and then General.

Valerie,
You can load from Legacy to Ancestry but Ancestry doesn't have a place for all
the Legacy information.
Do not then update on Ancestry and plan to download and reimport into your
Legacy file. Ancestry gedcoms are a mess. You'll just add to your normal
problems of multiple files.
By all means use an Ancestry tree to find additional information but enter it
also in Legacy. You can use tree tags in Ancestry to note whether you've done
that or not.

I did just a few people last week when I was feeling lazy and wanted some
people from my Q and D DNA private unsearchable tree on Ancestry. It was a
mistake. Names and dates are OK and I didn't have many events but locations
were awful as I'd entered people from other people's trees and sources created
by Ancestry don't match my style and most were not my sources so had to be
marked as such. I know how to do all that and I'll replace them in time BUT in
the end it would have been quicker to manually enter them all again after
finding and sorting them out on Ancestry. Of course I didn't import them
straight into my file but into a new file and cleaned up locations and marked
the sources by changing their source list name and changed Ancestry's residence
event to Census which is what it usually is, etc first.

Brian and Valerie,
I think Valerie is using the Reports Menu icon on the My Toolbar.
I never use it.
It opens a screen as in Legacy 7 with the Chart reports on tabs and then a
Books tab.

Valerie are you wanting a Descendant Chart? If so, you may in the Report
Options on the Format Tab want to turn off boxes and turn on Pack information
on one line. That may give you what you want.
But you haven't said which lines are missing. Another possibility is that on
the first Options screen for the Report - the one with the Report Options
button on it - you need to increase the indent for each generation.

Are you using Legacy 7? The steps you list below are not for Legacy 9.
The menu structure for Legacy 8 and 9 is totally different than you
describe.

If you are using 7 then the option for generation lines is on the report
options > Format Tab. PS the report is a Descendant Chart since all the
reports in 7 on the Report Menu are charts.

[LegacyUG] Can I have some help with my files please - higginsonodds - which I am hoping to have sorted out TODAY

2021-05-31 Thread vbgarton
I am only doing one thing to-day and that is sort out all the Legacy files
relating to my OneName Study for HIGGINSONS.

I have also received a gedcom from Adrian of his info some of which will be
duplicates but may have more information

These files are all over my computer so I have done a widows .ged search and
I fear I have created more whilst trying to sort my mess out.

I have created a word document for all these results for higginsonodds and
Adrian's info which I need to send to someone who is able to help me

There are two sections: 1 Higginsonodds and 2 Adrian's files re Higginson
odds.

TO DO:

1.I have numerous copies of higginsonodds over a period of 20 years - about
1050 names in each file but not all in each file

2.I need to work out which is the " best " one of higginsoodds

3.I need to add Adrian's info to No 2 and then merge duplicates

So here's hoping I can accomplish this today with your help.

Valerie,

Which type of Descendant Report?

In Legacy there is a Descendant Chart Report (that has lines between
generations and may be the one you mean). There are also two narrative style
reports the Descendant Book Report and the Descendant Narrative Report,
since they are narratives they do not have lines unless you mean lines
between sections of the report like generations and or families.
If lines are available, as Jenny Benson says, look on the format tab of the
report options.

If you mean lines around the edges of pages those are on the page setup
options of most reports.

All the reports in the Legacy Charting module have lines joining family
groups and generations.

Valerie,

When you use Windows search you are seeing many things which are not GEDCOM
files. Windows is showing anywhere that ged is included in a file that is why
there are text documents, spreadsheets and all the other file types in your 9
pages of results.

The .zipped files may be a compressed copy of a GEDCOM file or may be a
compressed file which has any type of file which contains ged. The only true
GEDCOM files are those with the .ged file extension and they will show when you
use File > Import > GEDCOM in Legacy.

PS: If you want to send a message to Tech Support send it to
supp...@legacyfamilytree.com not to this list. Support people from Legacy do
monitor the list but they may not realize your message was address to them from
your subject and there is no guarantee they will respond. This list is
primarily for users to exchange help and questions about using Legacy not as a
Tech support forum.

Hi Valerie,

With the GEDCOM, download it to your home screen or a folder, then IMPORT it as
a new file in Legacy.

That way you can check it out before and if you want to merge it with another
Legacy file.

Sorry I can't help you with DNA Painter, or the HR Pavilion, but Mrs Google can
answer most questions, she will often point you to a You Tube video which IO
find very helpful.

Good luck!

When you want to Open or Import a file, which option are you using - "Select
the file using the Windows dialog box" or "Have Legacy create a list of files
to choose from"?

Personally, I prefer to use the first one, but I think my files are very
well-organized and I usually know exactly where I want to look for a particular
file. I think it might be helpful to you to put all your Gedcoms into one
folder, then look at each one and decide what you want to do with it.

I would also look at the other files - text documents, Word documents, Excel
spreadsheets and so on and make a list of them with a description of what each
one contains, then perhaps gather them into one or two folders and make a note
of where you saved them.

Once you know what's what and where it is you can have Legacy open each Gedcom
in turn (remember to use File>Import for Gedcoms) and create a new file. When
you are happy with the contents of the files you can start to merge them. If I
were you I would try and concentrate on one particular branch of your family to
start with and get that organized before you move on.

If I

Good luck!

Valerie,

Did you see Cathy Pinner's email on how to import a .ged GEDCOM file? It was
dated a while before you posted this question and it was in a thread named
Hints- only getting FMP which you hijacked to post about changing a gedcom
to a legacy file.

In Legacy use File > Import and select GEDCOM as the kind of file to import.
You will be given the opportunity to give the file a name during the import
so there is no need to open a new Legacy file first. Legacy will create the
new file for you.

Indeed you can! Open Legacy and if it automatically opens an old Family
File, use File>Close File. With Legacy open but no file open, use
File>Import and select "Gedcom file..." Locate the folder where
"Adrian's gedcom file with my additions.ged" is located and click on it to
open it. Legacy will then ask you to give a name to the new Family File and
you can choose where to save that if you don't want it where Legacy
suggests.

You will then have a new Family File with the contents of "Adrian's gedcom
..."

When you say "saved file" do you mean you have put the gedcoms and other

import Gedcoms which will have the .ged extension but what is the extenstion

Ian,
MyHeritage hints are very slow since they've been throttled.
Make sure the refresh period is at the maximum 120 days. I'd also resist the
temptation to refresh hints. This wipes hints for that hint supplier but put's
everyone for whom hints have been requested in the hint queue again.
It would be better to delete the Hints file ~hdb.hdb or double
click the 1 in front of the first quick bookmark to open the Hints Monitor and
click Start over there which erases the file for you.

Alternatively, if you need quick hints from MyHeritage, use the Internet Search
for MyHeritage. Search > Search Internet or Internet > Search Internet. They
go to the same place and you can choose your site. Note you can add your own
internet searches here as well. The Help from it explains how to do that.

Is there something that I need to do to wake up MH hinting?

Check that you have the relevant box checked at Options 8.13. Also
that you have a reasonable amount of time specified for refreshing the

Valarie,

Not sure what you mean by "just an ordinary ancestry test" but modern DNA tests
are Autosomnal? and the results are too complex to record in Legacy (as I
understand it from reading posts on the Facebook Legacy User group the results
are files containing 1000's of values).

The originator of this thread was looking for where to enter one of the older
mt DNA test results which have a limited number of entries and can be recorded
in Legacy's DNA records.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Adding DNA results to Legacy

This sounds like a terribly newbie type question, but how, practically do I
add my DNA results to Legacy within Legacy 9.0.0.368 ?

I realise, I must go from the Individual's Information Screen >> then DNA
Records, then add the specific test from the appropriate company.

Okay, let's assume I want to add my MtDNA results from FTDNA, for which
I can see is the Maternal Test I need to add. The sections are marked
HVR1, HVR2 & HVR3, for which each column is marked "Location 1,"
Location 2," etc etc.

My question is where do I find for example Location 1's result (and the
rest), since in FTDNA I can see no mention of this, at least for MtDNA
records.

I'm not explaining this too well am I ? So is there an explanatory video
from Legacy on this please ?

My memory might be failing me now, but I seem to recall there was a way to
copy and paste your results into Legacy, at least for the Y DNA results ?

Thanks - David

[LegacyUG] My big mess

2020-11-02 Thread vbgarton
When I first started with Legacy I did 2 things:

* Put all the information in the notes including marriages etc

* In the place window after Australia for example I entered the RG No: eg
[28577] and also at other times added the age at death eg [ages 69]

So of course they do not sort by Australia, New South Wales, Murray's Flats,
" Cambrian Vale "

Is there any " easy " way to fix this or do I need to do it entry by entry
on the person page ?

Legacy allows you to print to an excell file. In preparing to print each file,
do not select first and last name together rather select surname, then first
name, birth date and death date. Now you are ready to print the entire data
base to an excel file. After it has printed, open the excel file and input the
name of the database in the first blank column. Repeat these steps for the
second database. In the first empty column input the name of the second
database. Copy the entire page for the second database and paste the results at
the end of the first excel spreadsheet. Do this for each remaining database.
Finally sort the file by the using the surname and then last name. Now you
will be able to go down the alphabetical list which will tell you the database
for each person. For excel help, see youtube.

[LegacyUG] I AM IN A BIG MESS - again - no still

2020-10-04 Thread vbgarton
* I have a one name study for HIGGINSON's

* I have more than one file all with different names

* I have a lot of Family Group Records for a family printed some with
different printed dates and some with no file name

I want to create a list of all those in a particular data base, some have 3
and 4,000 names in a file so I can have it available to search when I am
trying to find which database " Samuel W PARKS [2800] is in.

At the moment I have to open each file, one at a time, until I find the
particular person.

I hope I have explained this well enough for some one to help me please

Go to the folder where you family file is located using Windows file Explorer.
Look for any files with the .ldb extension. This is a file used by MS Access to
say a file is locked. sometimes if Legacy is not closed properly (like a
computer shutdown) these .ldb files may be left behind. Normally they are
deleted when the Family file is closed and Legacy shuts down normally.

Delete all those .ldb files then try to restart Legacy.

There's a Chronology Report as I explained yesterday.
Click the Options button on the Chronology View and then Display Options in
order to access the Report Options. When set as you like them you can just
click the Options button, then Report to see, print, save the Chronology Report.
Otherwise you can add it to a Family Group Sheet or an Individual Report.

probably be implemented by sharing the event from the principal in the event
with Walter Joseph VAUGHAN as a "witness" or with a role named "present at".
For example if he was present at the wedding of his cousin you could share
the cousin's marriage with Walter Joseph VAUGHAN to add that event to his

Valerie,

Set relationships to yourself.
Then go to Reports > Relationship Report
Choose the options you want and then create the report as a CSV file.
Open the CSV file in Excel and sort on the relationship column to bring the
list of 3rd cousins together.
If you want more details for each person than is in the Relationship Report,
then you need to use the Name List or a Search List (eg search for Individual
 RelationshipEqual toRelated)
and use the Options > Print and customise the print to include the
Relationship. Then "print" to CSV file. ...

I want a list of my 3rd cousins from my ancestry tree.

I have added a gedcom file from ancestry into Legacy. Downloaded a
text file and now I want to import that text file into excel where I
hope I can sort and find a list of my 3rd cousins.

?? Will this work and how do I add the text files to Excel ?

OR IS THERE ANOTHER WAY TO GET MY ANSWER please ?

[LegacyUG] Old Legacy and new ancestry

2020-04-01 Thread vbgarton
Sometime ago I uploaded my 1Whole .. family tree to ancestry BUT I only
uploaded basically the bdm's with no notes or sources. Since then my tree
has grown from under 1 thousand people to over 4,000 people. Somehow I need
to find that previous tree [ a thought that there might be an upload date on
ancestry somewhere which would lead me to my original tree] and add my new
information. I don't think I need all 4,000 people - perhaps only all my
ancestors info or all the descendants of each person in my tree that is the
furtherest back in time.

HELP
