Shirley there is a bug in Legacy Charting only for some people and you
can't publish to a PDF. But if you have a PDF printer on your computer
you can print to PDF. It's best to change to a suitable paper size for
the chart though there are ways to put smaller PDF pages together and
print a wall chart. However, since its wanted on a computer screen,
choosing the right paper size would help.
Does your client realise that for the number of people she can't see it
all on the computer screen at once?

In some of my testing of Legacy Charting, I have created
charts of over 100 generations. The problem is, you cannot
print that size of chart - it is just a paper generator.

If you only have a few people in your database with only
3-4 generations, then you could chart something useful to
be printed.

Anyway, just my thoughts, you won't be happy with what you
are asking for.

2016-06-03 Thread Shirley Brodt
Dear Stan,

Now that's one big family! Thanks for the information. It's interesting
that you used the Legacy charting instead of TreeDraw. I also produced the
Legacy chart, which spans several pages, but the customer for whom I'm
doing this work wants the 5 generations, with tons of offspring, on one
page -- now that's a problem that I'll figure out one way or another.

Thanks again for replying.

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for replying. I don't find the program difficult, but I need to get the
chart to look as complete and attractive as possible because this project is
for a paying customer who is quite specific about how she wants the final
product to look. At this point, I'm too tired to worry about the difficulty of
TreeDraw! I understand that one can import the Legacy data into TreeDraw and
that one has the flexibility to adjust various elements to make it look
attractive. Thanks again for having taken the time to write.

If Legacy Charting is too hard, you'll find TreeDraw next to impossible as it
is a far more complex program though does more.
In TreeDraw you can combine various charts and so can get "everyone".

I'm sorry but my mind boggles at the thought of trying to put everyone on a
chart. I have enough trouble with just trying to chart the descendants of my
maternal grandparents and fit it on paper size that doesn't require a very
large hall to display it.

It become pretty impractical to chart very many generations for any kind of

For Descendants, here are the number of pages generated

I think it is pretty obvious that if you try to chart more than about 4-5
generations you are going to have a problem trying to print and reassemble
the chart. I have printed charts out to a jpg file and taken that file to
Wal*Mart and had them print it on poster paper. A 5 generation chart
resulted in a 2' by 6' poster that was printed using a plotter.

Try some charts within Legacy and see how many pages of output you generate.

If you only have 1 child per generation, then you mostly will have a
vertical chart and you could print several generations.
In my experience, many of the families in the late 1800s and early 1900s
had 6-12 children, so plotting descendants becomes an issue with that many
children, children's children, etc.

Try looking at some charts by using the Preview mode in Legacy Charting and
it tells you how big the output is and how many pages to print the chart.
Legacy even provides an interface to a nice printing service to print your
large charts at a reasonable cost. You can see the cost to print the chart
based upon the quality of the paper you use for printing. All a very nice
service.

Re: [LegacyUG] Complete Family Tree

2016-06-02 Thread Shirley Brodt
Hi Cathy,

Thanks for replying. I don't find the program difficult, but I need to get
the chart to look as complete and attractive as possible because this
project is for a paying customer who is quite specific about how she wants
the final product to look. At this point, I'm too tired to worry about the
difficulty of TreeDraw! I understand that one can import the Legacy data
into TreeDraw and that one has the flexibility to adjust various elements
to make it look attractive. Thanks again for having taken the time to write.

Hi Leon,

As I'm working on this project for a friend, she has agreed to pay for the
purchase of TreeDraw. I'll worry about the difficulty of the program
another time -- I'm too tired now!

Thanks for replying.

Re: [LegacyUG] Complete Family Tree

2016-06-02 Thread Cathy Pinner

Shirley,

I suggest you spend a bit more time learning how to use Legacy Charting
to get the number of generations you want.
If Legacy Charting is too hard, you'll find TreeDraw next to impossible
as it is a far more complex program though does more.

In TreeDraw you can combine various charts and so can get "everyone".

I'm sorry but my mind boggles at the thought of trying to put everyone
on a chart. I have enough trouble with just trying to chart the
descendants of my maternal grandparents and fit it on paper size that
doesn't require a very large hall to display it.

I think you are asking for something that you won't like if you
had it. My experience with any of the charting programs, you will
only be able to use maybe 4-5 generations and beyond that you are
creating such a large chart, you can't see or print it on any
reasonable size of paper or poster.

I have about 40,000 people in my database and anything over about
4-5 generations is too large to use. Some of my families go back
15-20 generations. In Legacy, you can create a chart of Fathers
only that would span that many generations.

In Legacy, use the Legacy Charting icon to the right of the
Internet icon and you can plot lots of different charts. I would
suggest you try some of those before purchasing other software.
In some of my testing of Legacy Charting, I have created charts
of over 100 generations. The problem is, you cannot print that
size of chart - it is just a paper generator.

If you only have a few people in your database with only 3-4
generations, then you could chart something useful to be printed.

Anyway, just my thoughts, you won't be happy with what you are
asking for.

How many individuals and generations are you talking about that you want to
chart?

From: Shirley Brodt

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Complete Family Tree

Hi Leon,

Thank you for your advice. I tried the Legacy Charting options, but for some
reason only the current record names appear. The only chart that works with all
records is the Descendant chart under Chart Reports, which appearance is not
what I'm looking for. I think I might have to buy TreeDraw Legacy for all the
entries to appear properly. You say that none of the chart programs work well,
so I'm a bit confused. In my online search, the solution that was shown was the
TreeDraw program, in which one could format the lines, fonts, colours, etc.
once it imports the data from Legacy. If you have a chance, I'd appreciate your
feedback on this.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

experience with any of the charting programs, you will only be able to use
maybe 4-5 generations and beyond that you are creating such a large chart, you
can't see or print it on any reasonable size of paper or poster.

I have about 40,000 people in my database and anything over about 4-5
generations is too large to use. Some of my families go back 15-20
generations. In Legacy, you can create a chart of Fathers only that would span
that many generations.

In Legacy, use the Legacy Charting icon to the right of the Internet icon and
you can plot lots of different charts. I would suggest you try some of those
before purchasing other software.
In some of my testing of Legacy Charting, I have created charts of over 100
generations. The problem is, you cannot print that size of chart - it is just a
paper generator.

If you only have a few people in your database with only 3-4 generations,
then you could chart something useful to be printed.

Anyway, just my thoughts, you won't be happy with what you are asking for.

There are tabs across the top, which you found, and you selected 'Reports'.
So far, so good!

Then there are 6 groups of selections just below the tabs. Reports, Book
Reports, Blank Charts, Wall Charts, Last Report, Exit Legacy. In this set
select Wall Charts. The icon inside the box shows a pedigree chart and is
labeled Legacy Charting.

2016-06-02 Thread Shirley Brodt
Hi Evelyn,

I have chart reports and other reports, but there are no options for
either. Thanks for getting back to me.

[LegacyUG] Complete Family Tree

2016-06-02 Thread Shirley Brodt
I just purchased Legacy, and it seems that I can't make a chart of all
family members in one chart. I checked online, and I found that if I buy
TreeDraw Legacy, I could use that for all the info in the Legacy data base.
It seems like a waste of money for a genealogy program to not have the
option to view the complete family tree. Any ideas or advice are welcome.
