Re: [LegacyUG] master source list

2017-08-05 Thread C. DeLay
I have several sources for obituaries. If it's a newspaper, I cite the
paper as my main source and the obituary itself in details. If it's the
funeral home website, then I cite the website as the main with the
individual in the detail (I also copy the specific page web address and
include that in the detail comment), and finally, I have recently been able
to get large numbers of obituaries from binders held by a historical
society. I made a master source for the binders (complete with information
about the depository) and then add all the information in the details.

For those binders, most of the time it also lists the name of the paper
where the original obituary appeared (they are photo copies) complete with
page/section numbers and as part of my detail comments, I include "citing
name of paper, date, section and page" so that I can either go find the
true original or someone else could. If it doesn't list the original
source, I add a comment to the effect that the original source was not
included. Someone would still be able to get to the document I saw (the
photocopied page in the binder) but it would take someone going to the
society archives in person.

Therefore, I'm a "lumper" but not an extreme one. Hopefully that wasn't too
confusing to follow.

Re: [LegacyUG] master source list

2017-08-04 Thread Cathy Pinner

Laurie,
That's your choice.
I mostly find obituaries in newspapers so I use my Master Source for
that newspaper.
If I had other sources for obituaries I'd have a Master Source for each
obituary database.

I guess I'm a partial "lumper" when it comes to Master Sources.
A total "lumper" would have one Master Source regardless of where the
obituary was from and put the all the information in the Source Detail.
I don't like doing that as it requires too much repetition in data entry.
A total "splitter" would have one Master Source per obituary and not use
the Source Detail at all.

Again for me too much repetition in data entry.

I went to view/master lists/source to show all the master sources then
clicked on options on the right side and then clicked on print. That brings
you to a print window and you can pick what you want to print. I hope this

[LegacyUG] Master Source List

2016-02-25 Thread Jane Linkswiler
I fall somewhere between a Splitter and a Grouper. My Master Source List is
listed either under a location or a Family Name (I call my branches after my
grandparent's names and my husband's grandparents names). For census I have
Master Sources by State-County-Town or, if a different country than USA,
Country-(and divisions) and use detail to differentiate. That way I can
easily see a list of people in each place. I do the same with Tax info,
Marriage Records, Probate..anything that is located by place. Any books or
articles I have about a place..filed in the place. Any books, articles or
notes about any family..under the Family name. Makes the most sense to my
mind.

And, by the way, hello Cathy Pinner! Been a long time. Since the 2008 Legacy
Northern European Capitols Cruise, in fact.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Source List

2016-02-24 Thread Don Quigley
Cathy,

A lot of TNG users do attach their media to the events. But I prefer to attach
the media to the source because the source can be used for multiple “data
items” – ie, a census typically has names, relationships, occupations, birth
date & place, residence, etc. I want to be able to jump directly to the
source & media from any of the “data items.” I do attach photograph to
photograph events, in addition to the sources for the photos.

But – as we all have learned – whatever works best for each of us is the way we
choose to go.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Source List

2016-02-24 Thread Anne Lo Forte Willson
I think I'm what you call a lumper. I source from largest location to
smallest. I've been a little frustrated because the Legacy program wants more
detailed locations in some cases than the databases warrant. I've altered my
manner of sourcing to add a lot of the location information in the details
instead of the Master source.

2016-02-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

Also a lumper for most things with Source List Names organised by type.

Certainly not a Master Source for every household in a census. Does TNG
really force that if you want to include the image? If it does, I'd be
attaching the image to the event rather than the source.

No problem finding the Master Source quickly.

I rarely need to edit source detail. When I do, I know what people are
involved so can find the Source Detail on their Assigned Sources pages.
However, it's usually the Source Detail Text I need to amend as I've
worked out another bit of the transcription - and I use Search and
Replace to do that.

Then there is Show List for the Master Source to give you a list of
people using the source.

I want to print my Master Source List but can't seem to print what I want
it to. I do not want a Source Citation Report, I want the list that is like

make sense? I think it is also called the Source List Name.

I struggle with keeping everything consistent because I don't get a chance
to work in the program on a regular basis. By the time I get back to it I
have forgotten how I did it before or how to do it. I am trying to make it
easier by having a printed list. I will be glad when I retire (within the
year I hope) and I can work on this more often.

Any tips for keeping consistent would be helpful too.

The duplication of the Alt-C action letters for both Close and Cancel is
recorded as a problem in our problem reporting system. Only one button

Pat,
That’s because there is nothing to save. AltC does that because both buttons
are programmed to do the same thing which is close the List window. So after
you do AltC then hit enter when the button is highlighted. The window will
close.

After I use the Master Source List and want to close it, I do an AltC for
"Close" and that just moves the cursor down to the next option, "Cancel." If I
do an AltC again, the cursor moves back up to the "Close" option. In either
case, the Master Source List remains open (there is no "Save" option). I could
sit here all day doing "AltC" & with the cursor moving up and down and the
Master Source List remaining open.

I really do not understand the reason for this arrangement and wish somebody
would explain it to me.

It looks to me as though someone made a mistake when they selected the C

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Source List Name for Census Records

2012-09-15 Thread Sherry/Support
The Census source should be based on location. You could find several
families in that census and location so it should be sourced as Geoff
shows in the Sample file.

City/town is part of the Source Detail.

Unless you're a splitter and like rummaging through hundreds, if not
thousands of items in the Master Source List

[LegacyUG] Master Source List Name for Census Records

2012-09-15 Thread Kate Mohr
As a newbie, I used 1910 (or 1920,1930) US Census for my master source list
names. Needless to say, with family members all across the US, I have multiple
master sources with the same master source list name. I noticed Geoff uses
location in his examples. I thought family names would also work. Any
suggestions from users on what works, what are the alternatives?

Also, why is there not a field for town/city name on page one of the Source
Writer for Census info? County is there. Town/City is on page 2 and is buried
in the citation information.

Appreciate any insights.

Judith,

In fact this template was never released, I guess that with the vast range of
templates it became too difficult to program.

You will no longer find mention of it in the Help Files (or I think not - I am
on my tablet and cannot check) and these are always more uptodate than a
manual.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master source list

2012-06-20 Thread Brian/Support
Your explanation does not contain enough information on the steps you
used but my first guess is that you did not first clear the existing
clipboard which contained the 1911 census as the Master Source.

When you open the source clipboard first use the "click here ..." beside
step 1 to change the Master source for the clipboard then you can enter
information for the source details.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master source list

2012-06-20 Thread Ron Ferguson
Terry,

You need to create Master Sources for each census year, and Legacy has census
templates for each of these plus the Channel Isles. On the Individual Name, and
Event Screens there is a little blue arrow on the left, click this and at the
top of the new screen you will see a link to Choose, Add or Edit a Master
Source, click on this and then “Add” in the new screen. In the Search Box enter
Census, select, say, England, fill in the details, then Select.

You need to select the appropriate census year.

Hi,
I've been watch the webinar about adding census to Legacy. I added the 1911 UK
census source for the first time, following the webinar. I then started to work
on another individual in my tree, with the 1891 UK census. I only completed the
first step adding to clipboard, and noticed when I opened it up that the Output
Preview on the right side contains the information from the 1911 UK census.
What am I doing wrong?

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Source LIst name - duplicates for US Census?

2012-06-17 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Bill:

It doesn't feel right because it isn't right. It sounds as if you've
entered the ED etc. at the Master Source Level, perhaps at the Text/Comments
tab or even somewhere on the first (Source Info) screen. For the second
source you've probably included the other ED and page number. Legacy
recognizes these as two different sources.

The correct method would be to create a Master Source for Pennsylvania,
Allegheny, Pittsburgh - 1930 - US Census but add *no other information.*
Then go to the Source Clipboard, select the Master Source, and add the
details there. You can either do this separately for each ED or, as Rich
suggested, you can put the details for both EDs together in one citation.
Either way, you'll have only one Master Source but with one or two different
sets of details associated with it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Master Source LIst name - duplicates for US Census?

2012-06-17 Thread Ward Walker
Legacy allows you to create a new source with the same name as a
pre-existing source. (Apparently this field is not a primary key in the
underlying table.) It would be nice if Legacy gave you a warning before
committing the new name. Fortunately, when trying to cite one of these
sources, the panel that comes up also shows you what the citation will look
like, as soon as you click on one of the source name. So at least you can
tell the two apart. However, discovering the duplicate names should tell you
that something may be wrong with the way in which you are splitting your
information between the master and detail source records. If you are a
confirmed 'splitter', add more specifics to your source names. If you are
more of a 'lumper', then you have accidentally created a duplicate master
source that you don't need. There are many discussions in the LUG archive
about how people choose to split census citations.

You only have one source:

Pennsylvania, Allegheny, Pittsburgh - 1930 - US Census

Then you cite the information found as your notes above.

2012-05-08 Thread Brian/Support
There is also a manual way to combine sources if the method Ron gave you
does not work to eliminate all the duplicates. In the Master source list
look at the bottom for the button labelled Combine Highlighted Source
with another in List. When you click that button the wording will
change. Select the other duplicate and click the button again to combine
the two sources.

If there are more than two that you want to combine you can highlight
multiple sources using CTRL Click (Hold control while clicking. Once
several are highlighted click the combine button. Select the destination
source and click again to combine all the highlighted sources.

NOTE: If the sources are sourcewriter style all must be based on the
same sourcewriter template or they cannot be combined.

Recently I imported a file into my main family file and I have now ended
up with several duplicated sources in my Master Source List.

Is there any way to combine several identical Master Sources into a
single Master Source?

Many Thanks

Ian,

depends on how you define "identical", computers define "identical" as
meaning "to the last comma and space".

Why would you want to combine basic and sourcewriter sources? This was
trying to
combine two sourcewriter sources formed from the same, underlying template.

I know you weren't trying to do that, but I can imagine that people who
don't know *it isn't possible*, might think combining an (old) Basic
Source with a (new) SourceWriter Source is a way to convert Basic to SW.

You didn't say whether you were trying to combine a source that was basic or
a sourcewriter source. If it was a source created with source writer you can
only combine sources that use the same templates.

Using latest version (7.5.0.112) on Windows/7.

Noticed a mis-operation on the Master Source List window with the "Combine"
button. It doesn't always work! Sometimes it behaves as advertised and
sometimes
it doesn't.

By this I mean that pressing it with a Source List Name highlighted does not
always result in the program offering to let you select the item that you
want
to combine with. A work around is to click the Show List... button, close
the
resultant window, and try again.

The usual advice is to be sure there are no check marks anywhere in
the show only column of the master source list.

Make sure there are no check marks in the Show only section. That is the
