For the number of children displayed,
I use Custom, Option 8, 8.5 Child Columns on View, Best Fit Columns
This allows a 12 children family to be displayed in 3 columns.

I have this in grid list. By minimizing the Ribbon I can see 7 children. It

There are other views, like Descendants, which are flexible enough to show a

Re: [LegacyUG] How to configure Family View ?

2023-10-22 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian,
I also use Best Fit columns. If I want to see a grid with the children,
I switch to Descendant View and limit the number of generations showing.
You can change the View for the Child list as Margaret says or just
right click on the Child area of Family View and use View from the Right
Click menu. So you could move back and forth from the Child Grid if you
prefer it. I assume you know you can customise the columns for the Child
Grid, Descendant View and Index View and save several different sets and
switch between them easily.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to retrieve a backup

2023-04-05 Thread Cathy Pinner

Di Christensen,

First tell your daughter to leave the Documents\Legacy Family Tree\
folder alone. If it is moved or renamed, it is recreated with default
settings which may be why a different file opened in Legacy. Helpful
people like to put all your genealogy in one folder etc etc and this
can't be done with this Legacy folder. You can choose to keep your data
and media and backups elsewhere but not the Legacy settings.

Second check your Recycle Bin for any .fdb files in case she deleted
your most recent file OR ask her where she moved stuff to.

Third, if you have a current/recent backup - the Backup zips have dates
as part of the zip file/folder name as well as times - then use File >
Restore File in Legacy and find the latest data backup zip file/folder
(the media backups have media as part of the filename) and restore your
file. If you get a warning that you are about to overwrite a file,
provide a different filename.

You could also search your computer in Windows File Explorer for *.fdb
files. You'll see some if you just click the Start button and type fdb

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Use Publishing Centere in Legacy 9

2022-07-05 Thread Evelyn ..
Hi Cindy!
That is a HUGE amount of information and many options... sort of like
asking for step-by-step directions to trace all your immigrant ancestors to
15 different countries of origin.

I'd be willing to help step you through the process. If you want to email
directly ej1...@gmail.com.

Questions that come to my mind are:

* What is the first problem that you run into when trying to print a book?

* Have you decided which reports/chapters you want in your book?

* Are you going to have a book that covers 2 generations and include 30
individuals or covers 15 generations and includes 5000 individuals? The
sheer size of the book, digital or printed, might make a difference on
whether you print each chapter separately, or all together.

Terry,
You can see the modified date on Family View if you hover near the extreme
bottom right corner - you should see a small box pop up like the boxes that
show when you hover between the main couple etc. Each of these hidden areas has
a different function. Click the box and you get more detail. To see more on how
to see this go to Help > Help Index and in the right pane choose Tips and
Tricks and then General.

Thanks Brian and everyone else. I'm stuck on number 2. and possibly have
not done #1 correctly of your instructions. For #1 I tried in the "Detailed
Search" tab of Search under "How to look" using both "After" and "Equal To"
and in the "What to look for" I used 14 Nov 2021 9:06 PM - the date I made
the mistake, all under Modified Date in "Where to look". When I use "Equal
To" I get no records found, which seems odd. When I use "After", I get my
whole tree. I left off the 9:06 PM, used "After" and got a list of 1247
individuals. I assume that's the list but I'm not confident I got #1 right.
Next I tagged the 1247 but now how to make a search list into a file to
fulfill #2 of your instructions? I looked and can't find instructions.

Thanks again,
Gloria

Re: [LegacyUG] how to combine two files

2021-11-19 Thread Cathy Pinner

Terry,
You can see the modified date on Family View if you hover near the
extreme bottom right corner - you should see a small box pop up like the
boxes that show when you hover between the main couple etc. Each of
these hidden areas has a different function. Click the box and you get
more detail. To see more on how to see this go to Help > Help Index and
in the right pane choose Tips and Tricks and then General.

Maybe you can export the work you have done. Tag the new entries and
export them. Restore from backup, then import your new entries.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Backup to Drop Box please

2021-05-08 Thread Brian Kelly
Yes because you simply look at the copies in the Dropbox folder on your
hard drive. NOTE: if you are not online the copies on your computer may
not be up-to-date because you must be online for the files on your
computer to sync with those in the cloud at Dropbox.com.

To have your backups go to Dropbox just tell Legacy to save your
backups
to that Dropbox folder. For pictures I would suggest you create
sub-folders in your Dropbox folder so you can organize the pictures in
some way. I think Dropbox may already have a document sub-folder for
your general files. Place the originals (or copies) in that folder.

Carolyn,
Yes. Unless you have told Dropbox to only keep that folder online, then
it's available offline.
Simple use of Dropbox simply syncs some folders on your computer with
the Dropbox cloud and with any other computer you have linked to that
Dropbox account unless you have invoked Selective Sync in Dropbox.

Joyce, If you see "My Computer" you can expand it to see drives and then
folders ...
You might want to watch YouTube videos on File management or File
Explorer to understand these computer screens better.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Backup to Drop Box please

2021-05-07 Thread Brian Kelly
To have things transfer between Dropbox and your computer(s) you place
the files in a special Dropbox folder on your computer's hard drive, it
is created by the Dropbox software.

The Dropbox software on your computer will also allow you to open the
files at the Dropbox site so you can manage them.

To have your backups go to Dropbox just tell Legacy to save your backups
to that Dropbox folder. For pictures I would suggest you create
sub-folders in your Dropbox folder so you can organize the pictures in
some way. I think Dropbox may already have a document sub-folder for
your general files. Place the originals (or copies) in that folder.

If you have the deLuxe version of Legacy you can print an Event Report.
You will find it under "Other" on the Reports Menu.

First, tag your grandfather with an unused tag. Go to the Event Report
screen and on the Who to Include tab, select Only Tagged Individuals.
Then open the What to Include tab and make your selections there. There
are also Options, Style and Filter tabs which you may want to explore.

You can view your Report on screen, print it or save it as a PDF.

[LegacyUG] How to delete Hashtags?

2021-02-10 Thread Wayne Barner via LegacyUserGroup

Using Legacy 9.0.0.368
I have several Hashtags I want to delete. Under SEARCH > Search Hashmarks > it
shows Hashmark Name, Description and Count
Shows Create List (works OK, but not what I want) – no DELETE
Under OPTIONS > remove Hashtag from everyone in list > It does not work
Even though names show in Hashtag List they do not show under persons name in
Family View.
There is a DELETE button, but no Hashtags show to delete.

Where did I miss a delete button?

Mudcreek Software produced several programs that work with Gedcom files and
in some cases the Genealogy program. One is Genmatcher. I found it useful

There is a chance that they may have some data not in my current family

Is there a way to compare 2 family files & show only differences?

This would return a small amount of data which I could then transfer.

Thank you Cathy

I will first try with the Intellishare merge you suggested.

Creating a new family file & merging all from backups (yes they did all
originate from the same family file).

If plan B is needed, I will try the word compare option

Thanks

I don't know of anything that compares genealogy files and shows differences.
The comparison programs/features show similariites rather than differences - eg
the Compare Two files tool in Legacy on the Tools Ribbon tab shows potential
duplicates between the files.
If you created reports from the files in RTF format you could compare those in
Word and that should show the differences. It's not something I've done for a
long time but in Word you are wanting Review > Compare.
You'd probably need multiple book reports to cover everyone in your files.

If you think you may have updated an older file in error, you can find the
people that may have been updated by doing a search for modified date using
after the day before the date you may have started adding data in the wrong
file. They can then be tagged and exported.

If these files all originated from the same Legacy file I guess you could back
them all up and then import them all into a new family file and use
Intellishare merge but that may give you a huge merge task if most of the
people have been updated.

Once you've sorted this out make sure you only keep one working file and backup
zips of older files.

A Timeline in Legacy is a list of historical events like US Presidents and
their years of service, or Dates the states were formed. You seem to be
asking for what Legacy calls a Chronology which is a list of the
events in a

person's life.

To see the Chronology for Walter Joseph VAUGHAN select him and simply

I think you may be confusing two things because of Legacy's terminology.
A Timeline in Legacy is a list of historical events like US Presidents and
their years of service, or Dates the states were formed. You seem to be asking
for what Legacy calls a Chronology which is a list of the events in a person's
life.

To see the Chronology for Walter Joseph VAUGHAN select him and simply click on
the Chronology Tab. Legacy will build the Chronology using the events you have
added for him so to add dates "at school" add an "at school" event (or the
Legacy default Education) with the dates. Your "present at" could probably be
implemented by sharing the event from the principal in the event with Walter
Joseph VAUGHAN as a "witness" or with a role named "present at".
For example if he was present at the wedding of his cousin you could share the
cousin's marriage with Walter Joseph VAUGHAN to add that event to his
Chronology.

There's a Chronology Report as I explained yesterday.
Click the Options button on the Chronology View and then Display Options in
order to access the Report Options. When set as you like them you can just
click the Options button, then Report to see, print, save the Chronology Report.
Otherwise you can add it to a Family Group Sheet or an Individual Report.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to create a timeline please ?

2020-08-25 Thread Cathy Pinner

Valerie,

If you add the items you want to Events, you only have to do it once. If
you do it by editing the Chronology Report, you have to do it again next
time you have changes. Always edit in Legacy if that's possible.

The Chronology Report is found under the Options button on the
Chronology View. To access the options for it, choose Display Options
and then the Report Options tab though it is also reflects what you are
choosing to display. You can save it as a PDF from the Preview.

Note you can also add the Chronology Report to an Individual Report or a
Family Group Report.

Re: [LegacyUG] HOw to print a chart landscape

2020-02-12 Thread Cathy Pinner

Valerie,
Here is how to do it for Legacy Reports - this week's Tuesday Tip

In Legacy Charting you click the Charting icon top left corner and then
Printer settings where you can change the orientation and also the paper
size (especially if you are using a PDF printer which means you can
choose the size of paper a commercial printer will use for your chart).
Then in Help and Options > Chart Options - View tab make sure you have
show page boundaries checked so you can see where the chart elements are
lying on a page and tweak them for a better looking chart.

This seems to work:  open the Picture Centre and at the top of the
screen click the Browse button and navigate to the folder where your
pictures are saved.  In the list, select the picture you want to
identify.  It will show up on the right-hand side of the screen, under
"Picture List."  Further down that side are 2 arrows labelled
"Next/Previous person using picture."  Click on either of those arrows
and the name of the individual to whom the picture is attached will be
highlighted in the list on the left-hand side of the screen.

That's worked for me, anyway!

I do not think anyone other than a family member or relative of the
person in the 300px...jpg can help you with this.

If you do not recognize the person in the image you will either have to
find another file where they are named or ask your family and relatives
to see in anyone recognizes the person.

I have a group photo of my grandparents, parents and siblings but there
is a woman in the group who is still unknown because all my efforts to
find someone who knows her name have failed.

John,

All reports use the same options list but options which are not
available in a particular report are turned off/greyed out. You can try
resetting the report options to see if Children's notes become available
in the Ancestor Book report but I suspect that you are not seeing a bug
but a difference in options based on the report styles.

Valerie,

You can use a Detailed Search. It depends whether you are wanting to find it in
an Event Place field or Event Description or Event Notes or all three.

Search > Find > Detailed Search
IndividualEvent-Place contains East Ealing OR Individual
Event-Description contains East Ealing OR Individual Event-Notes contains
 East Ealing

The crucial bit is to use Contains for How to look Whether you need all 3
conditions depends on where you think it is. Also note the OR between the
various conditions.

Use the codes in the Help for Report Titles. It should be [FullName]
[LifeSpan]
Note each code has its own set of brackets. You may want [CR] [FullName]
[LifeSpan] or [FullName] [CR] [LifeSpan] to control the line break.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to handle Name change

2018-11-02 Thread Ian Thomas
Chris – an interesting situation. In my case, the person whose name changes I
have been pondering was born in Australia (Western Australia). I believe (no
real knowledge of the various state situations, around 1900) that the
documentation requirements were flexible.

An example is my grandmother, who was born at sea somewhere close to the
southern coast of Western Australia in 1901. When she was aged 12, her mother
was advised to make a declaration “under Section 106 of the Evidence Act 1906”
– I have a signed copy of that declaration (7 Jan 1913) .
Also, about 6 weeks later she must have written to the Shipping Master’s Office
(in Sydney, on the other side of Australia) and received a reply after another
2 weeks stating that “the official log book of the S.S. ‘Marloo’ states that a
daughter was born to Mrs. [name omitted by me], at sea, on the 22nd Jany 1901
but the name of the child is not given. I would advise you to write to the
Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, Albany where I understand the birth
was registered.”

I haven’t followed through to check records from that regional location
(Albany, Western Australia), etc. So I don’t have further documentation to know
how this process played out, but my grandmother managed to get through
officialdom’s requirements until 1979, including 2 marriages.

I think I now have a handle on managing his presumed life data within Legacy
Family Tree, and some help from Cathy Pinner about that and genealogical
standards.

Hi

Was he born in the UK?

As far as I know, at that period there were no official system for adoption
or for renaming a surname.

I had the same problem with my grandmother, born in a workhouse in Bristol
in 1890 with no father's name on her birth certificate, so she is listed
against her mother's surname, as Winifred Thorne and would have grown up using
that name. But she was then 'adopted' by her mother's sister, and recorded in
1894 in the London School records as Winifred Ambrose. Her marriage in 1911
lists her as Winifred T Ambrose and we always knew her as Winifred Thorne
Ambrose. I have her recorded as Winifred Thorne Ambrose, with aka entries for
Winifred Thorne and Winifred Ambrose. I also have two sets of parents for her;
firstly against for true mother and then secondly against for her aunt and
uncle, along with an Adoption entry on her. Running with multiple sets of
parents can cause some issues in reports and searches, but you just have to
live with that.

I have several people in my tree where the father's name was missing from
the birth register, since during that period the father had to be present at
the registration for his name to be included, but had refused to be there, so
the mother's name is used. I have also seen that in the parish records for the
baptism of the child of an unmarried mother. I also have cases where the
surname changes after the mother marries, especially for a bastard. In those
days it was common to change your name or you just get referred to as the same
surname as the parents, unless they explicitly make it clear that they are
different.

I’m sure the Legacy Help file has a succinct explanation of how to find how to
handle this common occurrence – but I haven’t yet found it.

I have a person born ‘out of wedlock’ – his registered name and mother in a BDM
Index - who subsequently adopted a last name (which happens to be one of his
given names), married and had a family, and died and was registered in the same
state BDM Index with the ‘adopted’ name.
His birth was around 1900, death 1950 and I haven’t searched for official/legal

Apart from knowing how to handle his “most commonly-used name” in Legacy FT

Hi

Was he born in the UK?

As far as I know, at that period there were no official system for
adoption or for renaming a surname.

I had the same problem with my grandmother, born in a workhouse in
Bristol in 1890 with no father's name on her birth certificate, so she
is listed against her mother's surname, as Winifred Thorne and would
have grown up using that name. But she was then 'adopted' by her
mother's sister, and recorded in 1894 in the London School records as
Winifred Ambrose. Her marriage in 1911 lists her as Winifred T Ambrose
and we always knew her as Winifred Thorne Ambrose. I have her recorded

2018-11-01 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian,

The Legacy Help file records how to use Legacy. It is not a handbook of
Genealogical Standards or best practice.

In Legacy (and other genealogy software), you have a main name field and
you have AKAs.
Normally you add the birth name as the main name and any other names
used by the person as AKAs. However it is easy to swap these if, for
example, you want to use Hints or initiate searches from within Legacy
in records where the later name would have been used.

You should add a Change of Name Event to explain the change.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to merge two Legacy files now that two people on different trees have become the same person?

2018-08-30 Thread Alan Denham
Hi Jenny,

When I say completed, my aim was to find all of my ancestors who arrived in
Australia from the early 1800s onwards then trace each of their origins back
to where they came from, and go back one generation further to around
great-great grandparent level. I have been able to do this with the
exception of one other great-grandfather, a Patrick Francis Jordon,
allegedly born Westminster ~1848 but of Irish parents. Four elderly
relatives have been researching him for 20 years plus, so I don't expect
that we will find his origins other than through DNA, for which we have all
taken Family Finder tests. The DNA worked for one other mystery
great-grandfather but eight months on, Patrick remains a mystery.

Cheers, Alan

Hi

I assume that, apart from the common person, the two trees are totally
different. In that case there should be no issue with merging the two files,
but you will probably then have two trees within the new file since the common
person might not get merged. Then just do a manual merge on one of them and
select the other one manually, and decide which information to merge.

Of course, take backups of both files before you start and make a copy of one
of them to use for the merge. That way you keep the current files and get a new
merged file until you are happy it is complete.

[LegacyUG] How to Unsubscribe from this list

2018-03-07 Thread Cathy Pinner

Hi all,

If you don't want messages you need to unsubscribe yourself from the
mailing list.

Unsubscribing is a process, not just one click.

Here's how to unsubscribe

The directions are at the bottom of every email from the list.

Here's the link:
To manage your subscription and unsubscribe

At the bottom of that webpage look for this section:

To unsubscribe from LegacyUserGroup, get a password reminder, or change
your subscription options enter your subscription email address:

If you leave the field blank, you will be prompted for your email address
***

You must enter the exact email address that the list is sending the
messages to.

Then follow the directions. It may not be easy if English is not your
first language.

On the next page you are looking for an Unsubscribe button, you don't
need your password but you do need to respond to the email that will be
sent to you.
Unless you respond to that email following the directions in it, you
will still be subscribed.

Hope that helps.

Cathy
PS - consider joining the Facebook Group. You can use Facebook just for
Groups and you don't have to Friend people etc etc. You can even tie
your Privacy down so you're virtually invisible. If you don't like ads
and also want more control over what Facebook puts in your News Feed,
you use a Browser Extension like F. B. Purity.
If you belong to this list AND Facebook, please don't post the same
problem on both.
It's really annoying especially to answer on this list when the ability
to add a screenshot would make the answer so much easier - only to
discover it was asked on Facebook by the same person.

[LegacyUG] How to combine two family trees for caront...@prodigy.net

caront...@prodigy.net,

What does your son-in-law want? All of his ancestors or all his children's ancestors? Do have only one
database. You can use the View, Split Screen, and have have the two files open side by side, then drag the
son-in-law's data into your data. Works best for me if I have the same person open in both files in side by
side pedigree views, drag "new" to "old", select everyone in file. Then merge. Repeat of
another person's advice, do not edit notes. I believe you can append OK, but best to copy notes for both
people to Notepad, then have the notes available after the merge is completed so you can paste them in if
they have disappeared or are "damaged".

Then tag the ancestors of the person you want to send to your son-in-law and
export the Legacy file for him if he is using Legacy.

2017-11-24 Thread Cathy Pinner

Caron,
If you are going from Legacy to Legacy always use a Legacy file unless
for some reason you need to go to an earlier version of Legacy.

If you import a Legacy tree that has some overlap with the existing
tree, you then need to use Tools - merge to merge duplicates.

Note there is currently a bug in the merge IF you edit notes within the
merge to combine information. You can choose to edit one of the people
during the merge and that's the best way to access and edit notes if
necessary currently.

So, first things first.

Because the initial person is related to your family [husband of your

There may be other duplicates if the couple [your son in law and

If you want your S-I-L to have all your data, then send him the whole

Amy,
If you go to Options - Customise 8.13 then you can turn on other Hint
options. There are 4. My Heritage, FindMyPast, Genealogy Bank and
FamilySearch.
FamilySearch hints work differently. They are not searching their databases
but the FamilySearch tree only for those people for whom you've entered the
FamilySearch ID (or the Legacy FamilySearch module has entered it for you
when you confirm people are a match). And then only if FS has hinted to the
FS tree.

My Heritage shows the Hints differently. On the left is your information
that was passed to them to do the search. That's all they use it for. On the
right are Record Matches and Smart Matches if you've left Smart Matches to
trees on.
At Options - Customise 8.13 under MyHeritage are two links. Read them.
They're mainly about privacy for the living and the way Smart Matches work
in only showing what you already know for the living so you can connect with
other people who have those living in their trees. Note you can turn off the
option to search for Hints for the Living.

Amy there are a lot of genealogists in the world and a lot of information in
the public sphere. Information doesn't have to have come from you or even a
very close relative but once you've given information to other people, they
well may have put it into an online tree.

2017-11-14 Thread frankinthevillages
Is there a way to suppress (remove) blank spaces in reports?
Specifically, I'm printing a Name List (Index) Report, and for every
listing that lacks birth and death dates, it prints thusly:

John DOE ( - )

Is there a way to eliminate the blanks where there is no data present?

Thanks, all!

Re: [LegacyUG] How to query in 7.5

2017-08-18 Thread CE WOOD
I am so glad you were able to help her. As for me, I never set my relationships
to 999, which as you say, would be ridiculous (and yes I have gotten back to
medieval and earlier times). What I am most interested in is direct
ascent/descent, although I find it interesting to discover the ancestral
relatives.

Well I thought she wanted relatives. But if not, you just do it for the
whole Name List.
Still works.

Anyway have had a private email from Patricia thanking me and that she
found what she wanted.

Re the Relationship settings to 999 - unless you've got very complex
multiple lines of descent from multiple people - as in the royal
genealogies/medieval genealogies, as I think you do, it's a waste of
time to set it so high.
Set relationships doesn't give you non-blood relationships beyond
immediate in-laws. The Relationship Calculator does.

everyone in a large file is related. The poster wanted to know about
everyone in the file, not just relatives. Even though you can set

Patricia,

There are two ways you could do it in Legacy 7.5.
1. Customise the Index columns in Index View to include Age at Death
and then scan the column.

This obviously isn't the best way if you have a large file.
2. Make a search list of the relevant people - eg Set Relationships to
your uncle and then search for Individual - Relationship - equal to -
Related.
Then in the Search list use Print and customise to include Age at
Death and instead of previewing or printing, use the option to save to
CSV. This file can be opened in a Spreadsheet program. There you can
sort on the Age at Death column.

As Linda says, there are some statistics available in 8 but this isn't
in 7.
