It doesn't back up media to the cloud. You would have to do that yourself to a

I keep my backups mostly local. I backup my critical files once a week and have

Thew cloud backup only includes your family file. Multi-media is not
included. That is why the cloud backup should be considered as an
emergency backup and be supported by other backups on and off your
computer. To store media backups in the cloud you will need another
cloud storage option like OneDrive, Dropbox or other storage services.

My impression is that MyHeritage is focusing their efforts on DNA

think the big companies are interested in investing time in
computer-based software (as evidenced by Ancestry abandoning Family

Ancestry is no better.
That said, it takes a lot of resources for these companies to curate,
digitize, transcribe and develop sophisticated algorithms for record

Ancestry is no better. That said, it takes a lot of resources for these
companies to curate, digitize, transcribe and develop sophisticated algorithms
for record and DNA matching. So of course they're not going to give that

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Legacy Family Tree goes by the wayside now
that they are owned by MyHeritage. MyHeritage has their own genealogy software
program, Family Tree Builder, that synchronizes directly with trees on
MyHeritage
 (if you have one).

Daniel Horowitz has been actively demoing Family Tree Builder the past several
weeks through his Ask the Expert 30-minute webinars on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Family Tree Builder has some of the features found in Legacy
Family Tree, but nowhere near all the bells and whistles. legacy is far
superior.

This past February at RootsTech I asked Daniel when MyHeritage would enable the
Legacy Family Tree program to synchronize with trees on MyHeritage. His answer
was, "Not this year."  Very disappointing. I get tired of
having to maintain trees on multiple websites, or periodically export new
GEDCOM files to them, which restarts record matching all over.

My impression is that MyHeritage is focusing their efforts on DNA tools, as
that seems to be where the money is these days. I don't think the big companies
are interested in investing time in computer-based software (as
evidenced by Ancestry abandoning Family Tree Maker a few years ago). They all
want us to build our trees on their websites, which really makes us a commodity
that they use to leverage their business model. Our trees help them bring in
more customers for DNA
 and matching.

Just my opinion. I hope I'm wrong, but as a retired software engineer, I'm
doubtful. Everything is moving away from personal computers and into the cloud.

If I recall correctly, v10 was on the verge of being release a couple of years

MyHeritage the updates / enhancements have seemed to come at a snail pace.   I
really do like Legacy Family Tree and have recommended to many of my friends

I know the programmers are actively working on Version 10 but the
company never says when a new version or even an update to the existing
version will be issued.

If you go to this page you will see what updates to Version 9 have been
issued and the bug fixes and/or features included in each one.

https://legacyfamilytree.com/RevisionHistory9.asp

I do not know why you would think that Legacy is being given any less
emphasis now than before the merger with MyHeritage. Perhaps looking at
the revision history will reassure you.

Please do not get into a negative discussion of the short comings or
imagined evils of MyHeritage.

It is not at all unusual for there to be years between releases of new
versions of Legacy. It was Legacy 9 that was released in April 2017 and
there has been no suggestion that Legacy 10 was going to follow on quickly.

You can expect an update to Legacy 9 before long. The latest public
version is build 339. The current beta version is build 350 so the
programmers and beta testers haven't been idle.

If you turn off all running programs and then RIGHT click the installation file
and select Run as Administrator this will stop 99% of the problems. If you
update through the program itself (Legacy home tab) all you need to do is make
sure that all running programs are off.

Turning off all other programs avoids the DLL conflict issue.

Bear in mind that what you are seeing here are posts from the *very few* who

2020-01-23 Thread Cathy Pinner

Bill,
You'll likely have more problems if you don't update as the security
certificate is about to expire and has been updated in this 339 update.

Many people have updated with no problems. If you are used to doing
Legacy updates you should have no problem though may need to pause your
security software during the actual installation.
If you get the Windows screen  Windows Protected your PC, click on the
More Info link and then the Run Anyway button.

Another thing it's worth doing is right clicking on the installation
file (if you are updating by downloading the file from the website and
not using the link on the Legacy Home tab) and choosing to Run as
Administrator.

I’ve read so many posts about issues users are having. Is it safe to
upgrade to the latest version? I’m not that great with solving
problems even though using Legacy for several years.

Christopher,

Nothing in the update could remove the FS IDs from your family file.
However, an update can sometimes change some settings including
Options > Customise 1.2 which controls which file is opened when
Legacy opens. That may have happened and a different file to the one
you normally use has opened.
Check by using the Recent File list. The Recent File List is found by
clicking the L top left corner of the Legacy screen if the L is larger
than the title bar. If it isn't, you'll see a System Ribbon tab and
it's on that instead. It depends on the Design Style you are using.

Make sure you are using the right file in the right folder.

Make sure you have all other programs closed and then right click the
installation file and select Run as Administrator. That will keep you from
having DLL errors.

Re: [LegacyUG] New feature!

2020-01-22 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jeraldine,

I've been using Windows 10 for years now and not had this problem, so
no, it is not a Windows 10 problem.

Legacy is still being programmed by the same people since MyHeritage
took over. The only thing that has "gone downhill" is mapping hasn't
been able to be fixed since Microsoft turned off the API that Legacy was
using. Everything else has got better.

The simplest solution may be to run the Legacy installation file as
Administrator. To do this you right click on the downloaded installation
file and choose Run as Administrator. You can also choose to use the
program as Administrator. Right click on the shortcut for it or the
Taskbar icon and choose to Run as Administrator. I don't do either of
these but I use an Account with Administrator privileges.

when I figure out how to go to "safe mode",  am I then supposed to
install Legacy program again on computer by clicking on the link - Legacy?
Am I going to have to do this every time there is an update?  Is this
some problem running program on Win10?

I never had a problem with updates on Win7 or 8.
SOrry  for questions, but I am not that computer literate.  Beginning
to think that Legacy is going "Downhill" since associated with My

We just released an update. Two things to know real quick.

1) You will need to go to Options > Customize > View > Option 8.2. Select
your preferences and save. These have been changed back to the defaults
because Dave did a ton of work with these numbers.

2) When you first open your file, it will go through a source checking
routine. This will only happen when you open the file the first time in this
new build. It is reformatting the sources in such a way that they will
transfer to FamilySearch okay. It doesn't actually change anything that you
entered, it just makes it so FamilySearch can see the entire source and not
just the source name.

routine. This will only happen when you open the file the first time in this
new build. It is reformatting the sources in such a way that they will
transfer to FamilySearch okay. It doesn't actually change anything that you
entered, it just makes it so FamilySearch can see the entire source and not
just the source name.

Cathy, both files are listed under the big L, Title bar – is that what it is
called – showed Watson, but the individual listed were from the Reid family.
No one is in both families. Customise 1.3 showed last viewed family, and I
have had it that way forever, but I just changed it to preferred start up
family. Whatever that did, it shook something loose, and I can change families
once again. Disaster averted. Thank you.

Do you have some of the same people in both files? What do you have set for the
Options - Customise 1.3 that controls who the file opens on. Depending on that
if this person is in both files, it could open on them in both.
What file name is in the Title bar - change person or view first as sometimes
this doesn't update immediately on changing file.
Are both files in the Recent File List under the Big L? If not, you've lost the
list since the last time you opened one of the files and you'll need to use
File - Open File to open it again.

Re: [LegacyUG] New User - Help

2018-06-17 Thread Michele Lewis
1) Yes, you can globally sort dates (Tools > Other Tools > Sort)

2) I actually recommend that you DON'T keep your working file on a USB.
Using a USB for backups is fine. Why? With all of the writing and rewriting
to the USB they have a higher failure rate. You can save your file to your
desktop. If you do, I highly recommend that you create a folder for Legacy
on your desktop because there are a lot of "helper" files that Legacy
generates that have to be in the same folder as your data file. If you save
your data file directly to the desktop you will get a lot of other files
cluttering your desktop up. If you try to move those Legacy will merely
generate new ones.

All you have to do to move your files from the USB to your desktop is to
copy and paste them. You will also need to go to Options > Customize >
Location and tell Legacy where you have your data file and your media files.
I personally don't save bulky things to my desktop but that is up to you.

Subject: [LegacyUG] New User - Help

Good afternoon,

I have recently downloaded the standard version of Legacy as I am thinking
of moving across from a Mac genealogical environment to a windows based
environment and Legacy seems to suit my needs, however before `I go and buy
the full version there are a couple of questions I was wondering could be
answered.

Perhaps they come with the deluxe version anyway?.

Firstly, In the transfer from Family Tree Maker to Legacy some of the dates
have become unsorted in individual record cards, so I was wondering if it is
possible to globally sort all dates in the tree automatically or will I have
to potentially do it person by person?.

Secondly, Legacy seems to keep saving the updated file to the USB stick and
I would like it saved directly to the desktop. How do I change it?

Sorry for asking what are probably silly questions but any help would be
gratefully received.

Regards

Philip

Re: [LegacyUG] New update is out

2018-02-03 Thread Cathy Pinner

You've encountered something strange then.

Options aren't saved as part of a Legacy data backup apart from Family
file specific ones. You have to save the folder I referred you to
yourself if you want them saved. Most options from Options-Customise are
saved in the profile.dbm file in the usr folder that is in the _AppData
folder - the one in Documents, not the one in Program Files which simply
holds the Legacy defaults.

Re: [LegacyUG] New Legacy User Migrating from TMG

2017-11-11 Thread Cathy Pinner

Walter,

There are many outstanding issues with the import from TMG into Legacy.
Whether this is one of them, I'm not sure.

If you're encountering problems, I suggest you wait unless it's just
these picture issues which you may want to address yourself if there are
many of them.

One issue suggests that images in TMG can be linked or embedded and
there is a problem with embedded images? However a TMG user who is a
tester for the import says the problem is media that isn't in the
default media folder.

Support is a much better place to report the issues you've found as then
they are recorded in the Bug Tracker.

I am new to Legacy and new to this list.

I just tried an import from TMG to Legacy for the first time. I
received a number of messages like the two below and I am trying to
figure out what the problem is.

This picture file reference, which is no longer linked to a burial,
has been removed from your family file.Media File Name=Tombstone -

St. Pete, FL, Date=

This picture file reference, which is no longer linked to an
individual, has been removed from your family file.Media File
Name=p000310-36.jpg, Caption=, Date=

When I check these in TMG, everything appears normal, these photos are
present and there are other photos linked in similar fashion.

Can someone please point me to in the right direction to solve this
issue?

Any other general help with a TMG import would be appreciated as I
could not find anything on the Legacy site about importing from TMG.
Also, how can you search the archive for this list?

Thanks in advance,

Yes.

GedSite understands Legacy's sentence templates. Legacy exports them to the
GEDCOM file, and GedSite reads them from there. If you make changes to the
templates in the Event Definition window, then export a GEDCOM file, GedSIte
will see the modified templates and use the new version when you make the
site again.

When exporting the GEDCOM file, set Legacy's "Produce file for:" option to
"Legacy".

Legacy users,

GedSite is a web site builder for GEDCOM files. Version 1.10, released
today, has several important Legacy-related enhancements. This version of
GedSite supports Legacy sentence templates that are managed in Legacy's
"Event Definition" window. This means you can manage GedSite's narrative
output from within Legacy.

As far as I know, only GedSite and Legacy itself will build narratives using
Legacy's sentence templates.

This update is free for registered users of GedSite 1.

To read the newsletter for this release, and for download and purchase
information, please use the following (shortened) URL:

https://goo.gl/ancfjG

The Change Log includes descriptions of other Legacy-related improvements
and fixes:

https://goo.gl/yXq9mU

I'd like to thank the Legacy users who volunteered to help test this version
prior to its release, with special thanks to Debbie Jorgenson who found a
couple bugs and made other useful contributions.

In what way is it not working? I have not yet run into a problem, but have
probably not used S & R on Master Sources very much.

Yes, but unfortunately it did not fix Issue #7608 - Search & Replace not
working for Source Writer master sources. Very frustrating to me because this
was an issue that was finally fixed in Version 8, but then resurrected itself
when Version 9 was issued. For a "extreme lumper" and 100% user of Source
Writer, that wants to make my sources consistent, this makes me pull my hair
out of my head. Very disappointed.

Re: [LegacyUG] New features suggestion

2017-07-13 Thread Donald Quigley
I use queries in MS Access to preprocess (ie, move data around) the Legacy
“fdb” database (in a temporary fdb file) so that Legacy can create a gedcom
(using the “Legacy” option) that best displays my data in TNG.

The main issue I have with the transfer of data from Legacy to TNG is with
sources and media. I am an extreme “splitter” – meaning that every source
document is given a Master Source name. I name and file my sources, and
associated media files, using the File ID (3225 in the example below).

My source names typically look like this:

Source List Name: 3225 - City Directory, CA, Santa Rosa; 1918 - Adelbert G.
Quigley Family

To achieve a “true” alphabetical sort of the sources in TNG, I use MS Access
queries on tblBR (Media Files) and tblSR (Sources) to change the Master Source
name to:

Source List Name: City Directory, CA, Santa Rosa; 1918 - Adelbert G. Quigley
Family [3225]

I leave the File ID in the name so that I can search for it in TNG, which
allows ad hoc searches.

My media files typically look like this:

Picture File Name: 3225_IMG.jpg Caption: City Directory, CA, Santa Rosa -
Adelbert G. Quigley Family; Date: 1918

I use MS Access queries on tblBR (Media Files), tblSR (Sources) and tblAR
(Addresses, incl. Repositories) to change the media file data so that it shows
the date and adds the repository for display in TNG:

Picture File Name: 3225_IMG.jpg Caption: City Directory, CA, Santa Rosa -
Adelbert G. Quigley Family; Description: 1918 [from Ancestry.com]

The queries also allow me to check for missing or incorrect File IDs for
sources and media, and for missing Repositories. These omissions/errors have
to be corrected in Legacy before the query process is completed.

>>>>>>>>>>

Regarding Scott Hall’s original question about transferring User ID values to
the Find a Grave ID, it looks like this could be relatively easily done with
queries in MS Access. The User ID is in the UserRef field in tblIR (Individual
List). The FAG ID is in the Value field in tblIV (Find a Grave List). The two
tables are linked by the common ID field. Obviously, you should work with a
copy of your fdb file until you confirm that your queries work. Another option
would be to export fields from each table and work with them in MS Excel and
then copy back into MS Access.

I know one of the great features of Legacy is its flexibility, so one
can use most field in whatever way one chooses, but surely the Source
Detail's File ID field is *intended* for recording the ID number from
one's own filing system? For example, I have different lever arch files
for different purposes, so one of my File IDs might be "Certificates &

I do, of course, record the FAG memorial number in the source detail.
In the Item of Interest field I enter "entry for Joe Bloggs, Memorial
#12345" and I also enter the full details of the memorial in the Source

I never have understood the need for yet one more number on the

Over time, you begin to learn which contributors are diligent and which just
contribute to pad their numbers.

And, very few do the requisite checking for alternate names or in the
cemeteries to see if the person already has a memorial. FAG has a totally
deficient search algorithm for cemeteries and people. It is not easy, but it
can be done if one is willing to take the time before contributing. Alas, not
everyone is. There are many duplicates and triplicates with varying information

There is an incredible number of memorials just lifted from totally unsourced
websites; ones that have zero reputable sources (a website is not a source). No
one monitors the accuracy of the data. You must double and triple check.

It's impossible to provide a tool as the number has been recorded by
people in many different places - Burial notes, just the source maybe in
source detail or in source text, Events, UserID, AFN box, Name suffix
and the number has been saved with or without a prefix that made sense
to the user.

The quickest way to fill the new box is to search for wherever it was
you put it and then use the Search list moving down it to copy and paste
or cut and paste into the new box. If this can't be done in a session,
you can tag or hashtag the list. When returning you could do a new
search for that would eliminate the ones done from your working list.

Re: [LegacyUG] New Find-a-Grave feature

2017-05-03 Thread Brian Kelly
He decided to quit updating LTools so it has not been updated to work
with the new file structure used by Legacy 9.0. When I answered the
original post I did not mention LTools as an option because I knew you
cannot use LTools with a Legacy 9.0 database.

I just remembered that a few years back a user named Dennis (Kowalski, I
think) from Zipper Software created a program named “LTools” that
allowed slightly more advanced users to do some pretty neat stuff to
their legacy data file. However, I just checked, and his website states
that LTools has been retired.

Hello ...

I am happy that v9 has a FAG data field and direct link to this well
accepted and important genealogical tool. For years I have been
capturing FAG memorials in my Legacy file by copying the FAG memorial
number into the UserID field. Now that there is a dedicated FAG
memorial ID field, is there an easy way to mass copy the data from one
field to the other? I'd like to avoid retyping (or linking) every
record connected to FAG in my file as there are over 4,500 records with
this data.

Thanks,

Scott

2017-05-02 Thread Henry T. Peterson Jr.
Scott and Brian and others

Yes it is wonderful to have the FAG tool...
Yes I screened a lot of FAG sites over the years.
I was getting headstones sometime obits that included names of children,
etc.

Now I don't have to get headstones which saves a lot of work creating
additional events.

Yes after having the new tool I am having to re-visit a lot of sites to
incorporate the memorial number in my Legacy file.
But, it is all worth it.. I have a hashtag created for everyone with a
memorial number and it all exports in GEDCOM that I use on my TNG website.
* Instant link to FAG memorial

Still have a long way to go only have about 8400 so far done.

I am not aware of any global tool to perform this task inside legacy. If you
have MS Access or Open Office you may be able to do an update query to copy
the FAG number from those events to the FAG data.

Other wise you can search for those 5400 people with the Find A Grave Event,
tag them with a Hashtag or numeric tag and then go through each one copying
the numbers individually.

It's not possible to combine 2 Sources (merge into 1) that have been
created with different templates. I think you will either have to leave
your "old" FAG Sources as they are and use the new template from now on,
or create a new Source for each person, using the new template, then
delete the old one.

Re: [LegacyUG] New Version 9

2017-04-20 Thread Brian Kelly
The FAG tools in Legacy will let you get to the memorial for a person
with a single click as Geoff showed in his demo. All you can do there is
view the memorial, perform a search etc. that anyone can perform. If you
want to use the features at FAG that are available to members you will
still need to sign in to your account. I am not a member of FAG so I do
not know what "extra" features an account holder has.

The same "rule" applies to the sites like MyHeritage and Find My Past
which are providing the new Hints service. You can get to the site and
see what record(s) they found but before they let you view the details
of those records you need an account and in most cases since these are
paid sites you need to have a paid subscription that covers the kind of
records you want to view. FamilySearch also requires you to have an
account but that site provides free accounts and allows you to view all
their records without payment.

For me that is correct.

I am a beta tester and have testing this feature extensively.

I have nearly 8,000 FAG memorials identified with individual in my database and
if I click in the icon it goes directly to the memorial for that individual.

AND

I am always in the edit mode.

I have a question about the new version. I watched the short video about some
of the new features. It shows Jeff just clicking on the tab for Fiind-a-Grave
and going right to it. I am a member of FAG and must always sign in each time
I use it. Does this mean that we don't have to sign in to these websites

what other tabs were added.

Re: [LegacyUG] New Legacy Build Available

2017-04-15 Thread William Boswell
You can also block it from updating whether metered or not by going to Services
and Extended then turning it off. I use it all the time because many Windows
10 updates slow my computer down after an update then I have to restore my
system. The only thing with Services is it sometimes turns itself back on so
if you want it to be permanent, you have to keep an eye on it.

Before Windows 10, I used a small program to block it from installing without
me knowing. I wish I could go back to 8.1, but with new computers they are
designed to not work if I did because of lack of drivers for 8.1.

Re: [LegacyUG] New Legacy Build Available

2017-04-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Yes there is a Legacy update available.
Sorry for using technical language.

Re Windows 10 - I've never had Windows 10 restart without warning.
That's because I checked the settings. I simply set Active Hours. That
way I got a notification message that an update was ready.
Creators Update comes with warning. One day I got a screen asking about
a variety of settings. The next another saying it was ready to install
and did I want to install now or set a later time/day.

Active Hours can be set for longer periods of time in the Creators Update.
Those who have been relying on Metered Connection to block the download
of updates will need to think again. Microsoft plan to ignore that for
certain updates I understand.
If you have versions of Windows 10 other than Home, there are apparently
other settings in Creators Update to delay the update process.
I wonder how many people are encountering problems with Creators Update
and drivers because they have taken the option to install now rather
than wait until it was offered. It's being rolled out over weeks or months.

Some of you will be all too aware that the Windows 10 Creators Update
broke the pop-up menus in Legacy.

A new build has been released that fixes them.

Re: [LegacyUG] New update .595 - Help corrections?

2017-03-02 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian
The PDF Legacy User's Manual has not been and will not be updated.

The internal Help is regularly updated and is far more extensive than
the Manual though not organised in the same way.

All the Help buttons in the program are context sensitive and take you
to the section you need.

I’m not sure whether the “inbuilt” CHM help installed at "C:\Program
Files (x86)\Legacy8\Legacy8.chm" is upgraded on install – I’m guessing
it is.

What about the PDF Help that I purchaseda year ago? Does that also
undergo revision?

Maybe I should contact Millennia?

2016-11-28 Thread Cathy Pinner
Online Database Template if you only look at the index/only have the
index available. In the Source Detail you'll find a Credit line to put
the source of the index entry.

If you actually look at the book, I'd source the online copy of the book.

Re: [LegacyUG] New to Group

2016-10-17 Thread Ian Thomas
As you probably need a new computer, I suggest you buy a real computer
running Windows 10 natively - pricing is very competitive. And Windows 10 is
vastly superior and easier than Windows 7, faster to load and using less
memory. There are some excellent deals.

Thank you for all the helpful information, Doug. I didn't realize this was
"off topic" because Legacy support is the one that referred me here when
they couldn't help.

As I said before, I think my Mac is too old to run Windows 10, so now I must
go to "Plan B". :/

I'm ready to get back into this and have been putting it off a long time,
since I bought the Mac in 2010. It doesn't look like there are any easy
solutions for me at this point in time and I am not ready to purchase a new
computer.

Hi Sandra,

Will try to keep simple and hope we don't annoy others that believe this is
off topic from Legacy.

My Apple Pro is standard then I installed Parallels which allows you to
install up to Eight (8) separate operating systems which all run at once.
You simply swipe sideways and go to the other system in my case W10. Where I
have Legacy installed.

So this allows selection of which ever program you prefer under its native
operating system.

Finally these two OP systems run seamlessly it's an instant change from one
to the other

I have say iPhotos running on Apple and Legacy8 Deluxe on Windows, and it's
easy to view both on split screen moving the mouse one to the other also
copying the same way.

Hope this helps and should be interesting for all Computer users.

Regards

Hi Doug,

Thank you for sharing your ideas. I didn't know you could run W10 on an
external drive, so that is good to know and sounds like something I would
rather do!

So are you saying it is a big learning curve to use both systems at once?
Is that what you meant? I'm up for the challenge, but unfortunately, I just
discovered that I don't think my old MacBook Pro will run Win 10. :/

Hi Sandra,

I use Parallels Desktop as the virtual go between, Apple 13" pro and W10
pro.

Recommend use W10 on an external drive.

Highly recommend its a big learning curve to use both at once though.

You don't need to get Windows 10. Look for Windows 7. I wouldn't go
earlier since previous versions no longer have any updates. Avoid
Win8.x since it's not the best version of Windows.
