[L-I] WRITING OF A PARTISAN MINER DURING WORLD WAR II
hello; these writings were from farid fazliahmetov.he was a partisan miner and talked about the way he used explosives on the german invaders etc. .' to combat partisan harrassment on the railways, the germans built fortifications, laid mines around crossings, stations and bridges, and then chopped down trees on both sides of the tracks.guards mowed down people who appeared on the tracks or anywhere near them.we often watched german sappers with mine detectors and dogsmoving down railway tracks, preceded by guards on both sides of the tracks who also had dogs with them sometimes.what we did was to lay our mines after the guards had gone.fooling the bloodhounds was more difficult.they had been trained to nose out tolite[a compound of tnt],so they found the mines.then we started to divert there atttention by dropping little bits of melted tolite here and there.the dogs would mistake thses for mines.they would be then punished for that, and start ignoring the real mines.' the germans remarked wrily: ' the partisans have recruited our dogs ' cheers mark ___ Leninist-International mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To change your options or unsubscribe go to: http://lists.wwpublish.com/mailman/listinfo/leninist-international

ello; here's a story about the worker's militia in the battle for stalingrad: some of the most bitter fighting was for the tractor plant[dzerhezinsky] in the north of the city.since invasion the plant had been one of the biggest producers of the T-34 in the U.S.S.R.. one month under fire the plant produced nearly 400 tanks; during the same month the workers at the plant and every other were organised into a ' WORKERS MILITIA '.everyone who enlisted was given a red armband,a rifle; and a bandolier of ammunition.the month the germans reached the tractor plant they met strong resistance;one of the toughest defenders of the factory was OLGA KOVALOVA[a foul mouthed veteran who had worked with the men for 20 years] this veteran had become russia's first woman steel founder;her battalion commander tried to get rid of her.insisting that it was no place for a lady; but she stayed and continued to bawl at any of the men that she considered lazy or ineffective. [L-I] FREE CD FROM C/WAMBA[REF TO THE SECOND COMING OF THE BEAST]
Enough Is Enough! Racial superiority is the fond dream of those whose existence is the strongest evidence against it. We’ve all seen images of the far right leader Jorg Haider grinning as he plays down Nazi crimes. His rise to power has left Austrian anti-nazis beleaguered and marginalised. Pop luminaries Sting and Lou Reed’s response to the emergence of Haider’s far right populist Freedom Party (FPO) is to announce that they won’t play in Austria while Nazi sympathisers hold the balance of power. Though this stance is understandable and better than no response at all, anti-nazis have not yet called for a cultural boycott and currently need all the international support they can get. With this in mind, we have updated the lyrics and re-recorded the anti fascist anthem Enough Is Enough (Kick It Over) and gave the revamped CD away free when we played in Linz, Austria on the 23 June this year. Chumbawamba have no plans to release Enough is Enough (Kick It Over) commercially. The idea is to show solidarity with Austrian anti-fascists and use the sleeve to disseminate information. In addition to Haider’s smug grin tattooed with ‘Enough Is Enough’ the cover features the addresses of anti Haider web sites. Although Haider staged a ‘show’ resignation from the FPO he is still the de facto boss of the organisation and harbours dreams of becoming the Austrian chancellor. He’s still very much at the helm of government and attends the weekly coalition meetings in Vienna. Anti fascists have continually opposed Haider and warned against his pro Nazi sympathies. Austria isn’t the only European country suffering from an upsurge in racism. Britain’s treatment of asylum seekers with politicians playing on people’s fear of the ‘other’ for political gain is particularly heinous. Blacks, Romas and Gypsies are the scapegoats of a political system which blames deprivation on outsiders rather than economic policy. Haider’s hatreds are on the surface, other politician’s are more guarded but still encourage fear and prejudice. Pop culture isn’t neutral: we are joining with all anti fascists in calling Enough Is Enough! We have a couple of hundred to give away free for the cost of the postage and packing. It's first come first served so if you want a copy then send 2 IRC's [International Reply Coupons] from Europe and 3 IRC's from the rest of the world. A POLITE MESSAGE TO OWEN JONES' STATEMENT[PART OF IT]. OJ WROTE.. Likewise, I would certainly not describe the Freedom Party of Haider in Austria as fascist either; a Rightwing bourgeois-nationalist party whose leadership is not really to the Right of the present British Conservative leadership of William Hague, to be honest. oj i think you should look at basic tactics of right-ish parties across the world;in basic terms just because there policies say certain points or come across and portray certain agenda's.doesnt mean to say they'll keep them once in power or while fighting for power.and also if you dig deep enough while there relatively small or even parliamentary and respected to a degree.[the conservative party has plenty of links to the extreme, nationalist, patriotic right] to categorise right-ish groups is rather naive and missing the point; hitler for example had a rather different programme before, during, after gaining power. there are many ifs and buts;but right wing parties are gaining ground in europe.do you think they will keep to there agendas if they gain more and more power in there various forms. would you say the bnp are not fascist because of there change of strategy???;they are and do portray a party just to the right of the tories.there strategy has worked;they gained considerable success in the various uk/euro elections etc. so saying the freedom party is not a fascist party is really off cue;all right-ish parties have the ability to be fascist when or if they get into power.also if you dig deeper under there respectability;you will find the fascist links. so no quotes or unpolite talk from myself;just plain words. ___ Leninist-International mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To change your options or unsubscribe go to: http://lists.wwpublish.com/mailman/listinfo/leninist-international
[L-I] HAIDER-THE SECOND COMING OF THE BEAST,BLESSED BY BANKER,BOSS AND PRIEST
Rome clashes erupt over Haider visit = Hundreds of protesters marching against the visit of Austrian far-right leader Joerg Haider to the Vatican have clashed with Italian riot police. Mr Haider, in Rome for the lighting of a Christmas tree given by his home province of Carinthia, stoked the controversy with the latest in a series of apparently anti-Semitic remarks he has made during his political career. Demonstrators threw bricks and cobblestones and police responded with tear gas and beat many demonstrators to the ground with batons, witnesses said. They had been trying to force their way down the avenue leading to St Peter's Square, where the Austrian Christmas tree is standing under heavy police. But their path was blocked by police vans, while police formed a phalanx with shields and batons and charged the demonstrators. One person was injured in the clashes The confrontation took place about 500 metres from the square, but the ceremony went ahead undisturbed, with the Austrian populist sitting in a place of honour near the tree. Pope John Paul II did not attend the tree-lighting ceremony, but earlier in the day Mr Haider had a private audience with him. Controversial remark Mr Haider's visit has provoked protests by politicians, the Jewish community, wartime deportees and students. Rome's Jewish shopkeepers switched their lights off when the Christmas tree's lights were switched on. Mr Haider's response, quoted by the Italian news agency Ansa, was to say: "If they want to save electricity, let them do it." Vice-President of the World Jewish Congress Lord Janner said the Jewish protest was "both dignified and appropriate" while Mr Haider's "revolting response" was precisely what was expected of him. "It is immensley sad that such a great Pope would lower himself by meeting this international pariah," he added. Papal audience Mr Haider's audience with the Pope was over in three minutes. The Pope gave him a copy of his New Year message warning against nationalism, racism and xenophobia, but Mr Haider had no time to deliver his pre-prepared remarks. The Vatican accepted the offer of a Christmas tree in 1997, when Mr Haider was not governor of Carinthia. Mr Haider resigned as head of Austria's far-right Freedom Party after the party's success at last year's general election earned it a place in the governing coalition. He is notorious for making remarks apparently sympathetic to the policies of Nazi Germany, and for xenophobic views on immigration. Protesters in Rome on Saturday said his visit was "a provocation and an offence to the city's history". The Vatican has defended the meeting on the grounds that the Holy See is open to all. The Vatican's number two, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, told the La Repubblica newspaper: "We must make a difference between an error and one who errs." Vatican uneasy BBC Rome correspondent David Willey says the Vatican is clearly embarrassed at the political row that has broken out over the Haider visit. However, the officials insist that timing of the release of the anti-xenophobia message was coincidental. The controversy over Mr Haider's visit has been sharpened by a row over remarks he made earlier this week criticising the Italian Government as "overly generous" on immigration. Prime Minister Giuliano Amato said on Friday he would write to Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel to express his government's displeasure at Mr Haider's criticism of President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Italy's policies on immigration. "The government cannot but judge extremely severely such criticisms, which are even more unacceptable coming from someone who holds an official position in another European Union country," Mr Amato said. Mr Haider had said that Austria should reconsider its membership of the EU's open-borders Schengen agreement because of Italy's stance. The Italian president responded by explaining that Italy had always been a country of migration and was a humane society. Then, in an interview with Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper, the Austrian populist said President Ciampi's response was typical of a left-wing politician. ___ Leninist-International mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To change your options or unsubscribe go to: http://lists.wwpublish.com/mailman/listinfo/leninist-international
[L-I] the cpgb and steven myers, plus mr diddle
Heres a post from Stevie of Red Action to the UK Left list. It's about Terry Liddle. Liddle is an LSA supporter, Green Party candidate and is VERY close to the Weekly Worker. Myself and a couple of others in AFA have been watching this guy for a while now and eventually we got enough evidence together to prove he was involved in collaboration with a fascist group, the National-Revolutionary Faction, in it's attempts to infiltrate the LSA (Liddle was even to be an LSA candidate at the next election). NRF itself is almost definately a state run "honey-trap" organisation. Anyway, theres a huge blow up going on in the LSA over this and the LSA may even suffer very serious splits. The CPGB is very strongly backing Liddle and is covering up for him (see last weeks Weekly Tosspot). This is why I commented on Sukants remarks about RA's "cuddling up" to the Weekly Worker being about to end. RA and AFA are spitting bricks over this and the CPGB are walking on thin ice. Take my word for it - this one will end in tears. Already the group the group that Liddle runs, the South London Republican Forum is to be "dissolved" by AFA. The Republican Communist Network, which both SLRF and CPGB are part of looks set to split and the CPGB itself is looking to get some of its members slapped if they continue their current behaviour, including attacking AFA in print. (Ironic that after so many years of slagging SLP and M-Ls as "Red/Browns" and "National-Bolsheviks" that they theselves are now being found to be a part of the real thing!!!) (Also mentioned below is Steve Myers, a known cop and rapist who know "leads" Workers Fight, a tiny trot group and does alot of "work" with Russian trots. Peter Manson is a Weekly Worker writer, as is Ian Donavan. All three have publically defended Liddle from AFA) ___ Leninist-International mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To change your options or unsubscribe go to: http://lists.wwpublish.com/mailman/listinfo/leninist-international

[L-I] request for support;for anti-fascist demonstrators in ireland
ANTI-FASCIST ACTION - IRELAND PO Box 3355 Dublin 7, Ireland Web: http://www.geocities.com/irishafa - Friday, 24 November 2000 - - FIGHTING RACISM IS NOT A CRIME... On 28th March 2000 a group of eleven anti-racists occupied the Taoiseach's [Prime Minister's] constituency office, in protest at proposed draconian measures against asylum seekers. The government was planning to introduce prison ships (so-called 'flotels'), forcible fingerprinting and the introduction of police from abroad to catch people fleeing injustice in their own countries. Bertie Ahern had praised the Australian system of dealing with asylum seekers, where people are held in detention centres. Although the protest was entirely peaceful, the eleven were arrested and two women were stripsearched in Fitzgibbon St. Police Station. The eleven have since been charged under the Public Order Act and face the possibility of prison sentences. The use of such laws to clamp down on legitimate political protest in Ireland is a disturbing attack on civil liberties. Previously, trade unionists and other protestors have been threatened with similar sanctions. Occupations have been used by other groups as a form of protest many times in the past. For example, when members of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) occupied the offices of the EU Commission for 10 days in July, the Taoiseach met with the IFA leadership on several occasions during the occupation and gave a 'compensation package' costing £60m. It is clear that the Public Order Act is selectively applied. The accused anti-racists are guilty of no crime. The real crime is the racism of the state. In recent years the government has deported many people who have come to Ireland to escape political and economic persecution. Refugees have faced racist harassment from police and other state officials. Politicians have repeatedly tried to scapegoat refugees for social problems in an attempt to hide their own responsibility for the lack of investment in housing and social services. Racism is the real crime: fighting against it is not a crime. We ask people to support the anti-racists, who are guilty of nothing but standing up to that crime. "I support the eleven anti-racists charged in connection with the occupation of the Taoiseach's constituency office. I call for the charges against them to be dropped." [L-I] football hooligans
Neo-Nazi hooligans target black football stars === Special report: race issues in the UK Denis Campbell, Sports News Correspondent Sunday November 26, 2000 The Observer A gang of neo-Nazi football hooligans linked to the killers of Stephen Lawrence is targeting black soccer stars amid a sharp upsurge in racism throughout the game. Police are investigating the English Volunteer Force (EVF), which organises racial harassment at matches involving England and the south London club, Charlton Athletic. The group has attacked rival fans near The Valley, Charlton's ground, and is active on the fringe of racist England fans who cause trouble abroad. Its literature bears a swastika and boasts that they are 'fucking racists'. Charlton is one of several clubs where black players suffered racist abuse last weekend. Fans who made monkey noises at Chelsea's Marcel Desailly are thought to be EVF members. Norwich City fan Peter Bloomfield was fined £250 and banned from domestic football for three years after he hurled racist jibes at Bolton Wanderers' Michael Ricketts when he scored. At the FA Cup tie between Ilkeston Town and Swindon Town, several hundred home supporters subjected visiting black players to similar taunts. In some incidents this season several thousand fans have taken part in racist chanting, systematically bar racked black players and sung xenophobic songs. Campaigners claim such incidents disprove claims - voiced by Emile Heskey, the black Liverpool and England striker, among others - that black players now only suffer abuse abroad. Piara Power, co-ordinator of the Premier League-backed Kick Racism Out of Football campaign, said: 'Racism is a huge problem in parts of Europe... But we shouldn't think that racist abuse and violence within stadiums has been eradicated from the British game. It hasn't.' The police, the stewards and the clubs needed to take tougher action against racist fans, he said. Offensive chanting is now a criminal offence, but stewards and police are often reluctant to act against offenders in case they provoke other fans. Closed-circuit television is rarely used to identify racists. Only 32 people were convicted of racist abuse at English grounds last season. Lord Bassam, the Home Office Minister responsible for football hooliganism, said he was 'disturbed' by the rise in racist incidents this season. He urged police to follow the lead set by Millwall where police and club officials ensure that fans involved in racist chanting are arrested, ejected and prosecuted. Since 1997 the club has banned 29 fans for such behaviour. Allowing for the fact that tabloid papers like to use a sensational style of writing, the article fails to address any of the relevant political issues, assumes that by presenting the BNP as a criminal conspiracy the 80,000 people who voted for them in the Greater London Assembly elections, for example, will see the error of their ways, and concludes that the only way to stop them is to collaborate with the police who will then prevent fascism winning support (just like they have in Austria, France, Italy, Germany, etc, etc!). Some extracts from the article illustrate the point: "Our investigators uncovered the plot after we infiltrated the BNP's highest ranks and unearthed a dossier of top-secret memos and e-mails ... a Special Branch source said "This evidence is very disturbing indeed. What you have told us is a clear conspiracy to incite people to break the law. We will be clamping down hard on these people. We must not allow them to sow their sick message of hate." ... Darby and his cowardly cronies try to hide behind the phoney name of the Anytown Fuel Protest Support Group. But we can reveal that the masterminds of the whole subversive campaign are BNP leader Nick Griffin - who has a conviction for inciting racial hatred - and deputy leader Tony Lecomber, who was jailed for 3 years in 1991 for attacking a Jewish teacher in East London ... Our dossier is available to police so that they can smash this evil plot." Anti-fascists, and in particular groups like the SWP/ANL, must publicly distance themselves from those who would seek to hijack the independence of the anti-fascist movement and re-align 'anti-fascism' as part of the police or the establishment. As the fascists continue to win support from those who have been betrayed by the establishment parties and their police, it hardly constitutes a winning strategy for anyone on 'the Left' to be openly linked with those parties who are so completely discredited in the eyes of so many. * * * IF FASCISTS WERE PACIFISTS, WOULD THEIR POLITICS BE ACCEPTABLE? - Tuesday, 14 November 2000 - It has been interesting to read the numerous press reports of BNP infiltration of the fuel protests, especially since it has been revealed that MI5 have devoted considerable resources to undermining the actions. Rather than any considered analysis of the Far Right moving into an area that has traditionally been receptive to the ideas of fascism, eg. small businessmen and the self-employed, the 'anti-fascist' argument has been that the BNP's presence is a problem because they are violent. "Extremist right-wing groups and individuals have infiltrated the fuel price movement and plan to be 'heavily involved' when the protests start again next week, an Observer investigation has revealed. Senior police fear that the presence of neo-Nazis among the protesters will lead to violence and attacks on officers." (Observer, 5/11/00). Since 1994 AFA has been drawing attention to the fact that the BNP have withdrawn from street confrontations and adopted a 'peaceful' Euro-Nationalist approach. The continual obsession to portray the BNP as a violent movement when its present strategy is specifically designed to avoid trouble at all costs is absurd, and their growing support in elections is evidence that anti-fascists will have to come up with better arguments in order to defeat the Far Right. November 14 2000 If fascists were pacifists, would their politics be acceptable? It has been interesting to read the numerous press reports of BNP infiltration of the fuel protests, especially since it has been revealed that MI5 have devoted considerable resources to undermining the actions. November 14 2000 Far Right in Austria lose support - can the Left rise to the challenge? Haider's Freedom Party (FPO) vote fell from 17% to 12% in the recent provincial elections in Styria (October 15th). This was the first electoral test for the FPO since they entered the Austrian government. The drop in support is because the FPO claimed to represent the interests of the disenfranchised and disillusioned working class, but on taking power proceeded to support major cuts in social welfare spending. In other words attacking the very people who had turned to the Far Right for support. This disillusion with the FPO isn't just confined to Styria, a recent survey carried out by the Format magazine showed that only 24% of Freedom Party supporters believed the Party had stuck to its election pledges in government. What is important for anti-fascists to realise is that the disillusioned FPO voters haven't returned to the Social Democrats, who received their lowest vote in Styria since 1945. The betrayal of the working class by all the major parties allowed the Far Right to pose as the radical alternative. Their failure to deliver in Austria, once elected, shows that a progressive working class organisation, committed to dealing with working class problems rather than middle class liberalism, could win
[L-I] Fwd: [slp-youth] Hungary: Pro-Nazi Officer Promoted - AP
Hungarian Pro-Nazi Officer Promoted == BUDAPEST, Nov 9, 2000 -- (Agence France Presse) Hungarian authorities defended Wednesday the promotion of a retired army officer who has praised the country's pro-Nazi authorities during World War II. The defense ministry said Major Robert Szalay, who was promoted to a colonel, was elevated in rank for his role in the country's 1956 uprising against Soviet domination. "Robert Szalay was an active participant of the 1956 revolution and freedom fight, he is a genuine revolutionary who is still active today," the ministry said in a statement. In a book he wrote on the 1956 uprising and the events that led to it, Szalay praised the 1944 coup by antisemitic and pro-Nazi Hungarian governor Ferenc Szalasi, backed by Hitler's Third Reich. The coup was a "legal action" which "spearheaded the fight to save the nation from Bolshevism and defended Europe from Asian barbarism," according to excerpts published in the Magyar Hirlap newspaper. Szalasi was tried as a war criminal and executed in 1946. The ministry said Szalay's promotion was made under a law that "makes possible the promotion of retired officers" and on the proposal of 1956 revolutionaries, but declined to react on Szalay's views on history. According to Magyar Hirlap, Szalay is also a leading editor of the extreme right-wing nationalist Szittyakuert newspaper published by emigree Hungarians in the United States. Historian Attila Szakolczay said that Szalay's participation in the 1956 uprising was restricted to a single occasion of demanding weapons for upraises. "After that, he disappeared and when the revolution was crushed, he signed a statement that condemned the revolution as a counter-revolution and enrolled in the Communist militia that helped keep (pro-Soviet) order afterwards," said Szakolczay -- eGroups Sponsor -~-~ FONT COLOR="#99"eGroups eLerts It's Easy. TACKLING FASCISM AT FOOTBALL Football News November 15th 2000 Di Canio on the right wing "Perhaps precisely because I am right wing, I am fascinated by Benito Mussolini. Remember those mobile phone advertisements where they asked people who they most would like to have a one-to-one with? Ian Wright picked Dr. Martin Luther King, my choice would have been Mussolini." Paolo Di Canio writing in his autobiography. October 30th 2000 Lazio, Di Canio and Il Duce. Racism at football grounds has hit the headlines again - but this time its hard to blame the inadequacies of the 'Kick It Out' campaign. The incident in question happened during the recent European Champions League game between Lazio and Arsenal - the racism was directed from one highly paid professional to another in a game televised live throughout Europe. Lazio player Sinisa Mihajlovic was fingered by Arsenal's Patrick Viera for making comments such as "fucking black monkey" - comments that Mihajlovic admitted and put down to the usual 'heat of the moment'. Judging by the Lazio Ultras' history of overt links with fascist groups and propensity to flaunt banners proclaiming this, it seems that these views aren't confined to the supporters but are endorsed by some of the players. Enter the FA - professional hand-wringers that they are, proclaiming their Italian counterparts should introduce sanctions against not only Mihajlovic but also the sizeable racist section of the Lazio support (perhaps arrest them en masse?) On Wednesday 25th October Mihajlovic made a public apology before a game - AFA sources at the ground say the reaction from the Lazio supporters was mixed. It would be good to see the sections of the crowd who applauded him take action in the same tradition that Celtic Fans Against Fascism have in the past - a fan based solution. Meanwhile the FA should concentrate on trying to get their own house in order - for example our man in Paris said the racism expressed by the England followers at the recent France v England friendly was the worst he'd ever heard. As for Lazio, after having read Paulo Di Canio's autobiography and his love of Mussolini, let's hope he isn't asked to broker between 'establishment anti-racism' and the Ultras. October 9th 2000 New issue of TAL available Issue 27 of the anti-fascist Celtic fanzine 'Tiocfaidh Ar La' is now out. With articles on the Hillsborough Justice Campaign, Johnny 'Mad Dog' Adair, the Easton Cowboys, sectarian attacks and of course football, it is well worth reading. Available from TAL Books, BM Box 266, London, WC1N 3XX. It only costs £1 for 28 action-packed pages; cheques should be made payable to 'TAL'. ___ Leninist-International mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To change your options or unsubscribe go to: http://lists.wwpublish.com/mailman/listinfo/leninist-international
[L-I] anti fascist action international
For the first time there is now an international network of militant anti-fascists. The network is launched against the backdrop of the far right's recent successes across Europe and especially in France. As the fascists attempt to gain credibility through electoral strategies, the task for militant anti-fascists is to out radicalise them in the battle for the hearts and minds of working class communities. We stand for the physical and ideological confronatation of fascism, and we are not fighting to maintain the status quo. We see the challenges facing us as a three cornered fight, between the militants, the fascists and the state. We recognise that the ultimate guarantee against the far right penetrating the mainstream, is a strong politically independent working class movement. Militant anti-fascism is a single issue campaign, whose function is to first separate out those who want to fight from those who do not, and then to ensure unity amongst us, to actively combat the isolation we face in our own countries. The groups organised in the network come from a wide range of political backgrounds, but all recognise that if our common enemy is to be defeated it is what unites us, rather than what divides us that must have primacy. The network will ensure active co-operation and communication, to enable us to develop effective stragegies for combatting the rise of fascism. As the fascists and state governments organise internationally, so must we. The network currently comprises groups from 6 countries. We recognise the importance of national organisation as being essential to effective international organisation, and will work to develop militant anti-fascist networks in member countries. Our manifesto document will be circulated as widely as possible, and we call on all militant anti-fascist groups who share our understanding, aims and objectives, to affiliate to the network. Recent info. Call for closure of some pubs after violent racist attack, The Examiner - 2nd May 2000 by Seán McCárthaigh CALLS have been made for increased policing and the closure of some public houses following a violent racist attack in inner city Dublin on Sunday night. Tension has mounted in the local community after windows in a Nigerian owned shop on Parnell Street were smashed when a vicious row developed between a group of white and black people. About 60 people were involved in the violent fracas, which led to gardaí closing off the street outside Infinity Ventures, a combined grocery store and hairdressing salon. The incident, which lasted around 15 minutes, is believed to have started when a man shouted racist remarks at a black motorist sitting in a car outside the shop. The man then crossed the road and went inside the Blue Lion pub. He emerged a few minutes later accompanied by a few other men who began to throw bottles and glasses at the shopfront. Pool cues were also used to smash the large glass windows in the store. During the attack, female shop assistant, Destiny Warrior, was pushed and jostled, while there were unconfirmed reports that another Nigerian suffered a broken arm. Some of the attackers then ran back across the road into the Blue Lion. After gardaí managed to restore order, officers requested the bar owner to close the premises. While no arrests were made, gardaí confirmed that a follow up investigation was continuing. Local resident Senator David Norris expressed alarm at the incident yesterday and called for improved community relations to defuse tension. In particular, he recommended the closure of several, unnamed pubs which, he claimed, were responsible for much of the anti social behaviour around Parnell Street. "It's amazing how some pubs ever get their licences renewed," he said. Senator Norris said he was appalled and disgusted by Sunday night's events. "It seems clear that the motivation for this is pure racism," he added. He also called for a more visible garda presence and increased foot patrols in the area. Shop owner, Kola Ojewale, a Nigerian who has lived in Ireland for the past three years, said he was very saddened by the incident. He said the attack had led him to question his future in Ireland. "I'm beginning to wonder if the best thing to do is to close the shop for the safety of my wife and children," said Mr Ojewale. Gabriel Okenla of the Pan African Organisation said black people in the area had received a number of threats in recent months. However, he pointed out that this was the first serious racist attack on property. Speaking during a march by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions to celebrate May Day in Dublin, Mr Okenla urged people to adopt a positive outlook as Ireland moved towards a multicultural society. "Our aim is to demonstrate that we have nothing to fear from each other but a lot to learn, and that the aspiration of refugees is to find a new life and home in peace and prosperity" said Mr Okenla. Meanwhile, public service union, Impact, has criticised figures which show that only one designated social worker has been allocated to deal with over 110 unaccompanied refugee children. -- -- ___ Leninist-International mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To change your options or unsubscribe go to: http://lists.wwpublish.com/mailman/listinfo/leninist-international

Recent info. City-centre protest over racist attack from The Irish Times, Friday, April 21, 2000 By Nuala Haughey Up to 70 African asylum-seekers and refugees protested in Dublin city centre yesterday over a racist attack on a Nigerian teenager who was left with head injuries. The spontaneous demonstration is the first public anti-racism protest in the State by African asylum-seekers and refugees. The injured asylum-seeker, Mr Paul Abayomi (16), stood in the midst of the noisy and agitated crowd in O'Connell Street dressed in the blood-stained coat he was wearing when attacked in Summerhill on Wednesday night. Paul Abayomi and friends, marching with Anti-Fascist Action Ireland His right eye was badly bruised and swollen with five stitches in an arc-shaped scar. He held a placard which read: "I am a victim of racial attack." The protesters said the attack was the culmination of incidents in which pregnant women have been spat at, shots have been fired at African-owned shops and vehicles damaged. Several people complained about lack of Garda action in dealing with attacks. The demonstration was addressed by speakers with a loud hailer and the crowd sang the John Lennon song, Give Peace A Chance. Mr Abayomi, who has been in Ireland for four months, said he was attacked from behind while waiting at a shop. "I felt a bang on the head. They were hitting me and shouting "Nigger". . . I just ran out and some people called an ambulance." Mr Mick Rafferty, a community activist in the north inner city area, apologised to the crowd for the attack. He appealed for calm and called for Government action to address the "clumsy policies" of placing asylum-seekers in socially deprived areas without preparing host communities. Sgt. James Cadden, from Fitzgibbon Street Garda station, said the attack was being "fully investigated in the normal way". -- -- The archive of news/ events and general AFA Ireland texts can be accessed HERE (Click me!) -- -- The archive of news/ events and general AFA Ireland texts can be accessed HERE (Click me!) Recent info. Racial hatred spilling out of control, The Examiner - 2nd May 2000 by Seán McCárthaigh ONE of the country's most violent racist attacks occurred just off from O'Connell Street in Dublin. Although only a short distance from the city's main shopping district, Parnell Street is a world away from the bright shopfronts and facias of Dublin's largest thoroughfare. A large number of its buildings look dilapidated, adding to the grim urban landscape of one of Dublin's poorest areas. Locals admit that racist tension in the area has grown in recent months due to the presence of asylum seekers being housed around Parnell Street. The north inner city area is now home to around 1,000 refugees from Nigeria, which has led residents to dub the district "Little Africa." Several immigrants have started up small businesses including grocery stores and restaurants to cater for the ethnic community. However, any sign of their prosperity is seen by some as directly responsible for their own poor conditions. Gardaí and people living in the area claim the problem was exacerbated a few weeks ago following another incident between a Nigerian and some local people which is still under investigation. While there have been a few assaults on asylum seekers around the north inner city, Sunday night's incident was the first serious racist attack on property. Certainly, there are signs that a tinderbox situation is developing, with growing mistrust between the two communities. "People on both sides also don't trust either the gardaí or local politicians. They think their involvement only makes such matters worse," said one local who has attempted to engage the two communities in dialogue. "The real danger is what will happen when such a vacuum exists." The problem has not been helped by unease among refugees about the lack of gardaí acting on complaints of racist abuse. Several black people whom I spoke to claimed they had experienced gardaí being physically and verbally abusive to them. However, the Nigerian shop owner at the centre of the attack said he believed the racist problem in the local community was confined to a small minority. Kola Ojewale, 34, maintained that direct talks offered the best hope of defusing any racist tension around the north inner city. "I hope that this situation can be sorted if people talk to each other," he remarked. Across the road in The Blue Lion, customers were not prepared to discuss the events of the previous night. Many were unhappy that they had become the focus of media attention following the weekend's attack on the Nigerian shop. The pub has a colourful reputation and has seen several violent incidents in the past. Locals explained that people in the area were nervous following an IRA linked murder at another pub half a mile away on Sunday evening. This reporter was jostled and pushed into the pub's toilet in an intimidating manner. Although I did not witness the event, one customer said he saw another man with a blade move in my direction. A barman who initially said he had no problem with me speaking to customers eventually told me to leave the premises. One man willing to discuss events in the area was called a "scumbag" by other people in the lounge and told he would not be welcome back on the premises. "Go back to your niggers," shouted another customer as I left the pub. Unfortunately, the indications from Parnell Street is that Sunday's attack may not remain an isolated incident. ___ Leninist-International mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] To change your options or unsubscribe go to: http://lists.wwpublish.com/mailman/listinfo/leninist-international

[L-I] review plus i/view with commie poet
meeting and interviewing such an interesting figure full of culture; is such a pleasure in these dull days .to best describe the "BEAST OF BRIGHTON";would be to say he/s a "social surrealist multi-instrumentalist hardcore wandering minstrel"[in the genghis khan sense of the word].sharp radical poetry, hardhitting songs are a fraction of this man/s talents. he bring/s an interesting mix of medieval punk across many lands including a hotel basement in albania[thomson holiday advertised it for the tourists in there holiday brochure??].ATTILA/S AT THE BAR but i wont go on because i/m sure attila/s has plenty to say?![he usually does]. your loves in life was the first question i asked ; attila quickly told me he especially missed his lover Robina on his many raids across the world.he went onto say although he enjoys wandering many lands;he always looks forward to coming home to his lover, to a real pint of ale, to his hobby-fishing,and to his football-Brighton Hove Albion. on the question of ale i asked attila how many pints of ale he could drink a day???; i was quickly told more than Willie Hague could!![and it was real ale]. your perceptions of a punk rock poet may be of a rabble rousing hard drinker;but attila/s a very man full of culture.he told me about his love of his garden[see his poetry books for proof of this]; his fondness of fishing.but his love of nature goes further than planting this and that;attila has a pet Tarantula and pet American Bullfrogs.his small garden pond is sanctuary to wandering rare Newts[but as i said earlier, read his poetry books to hear these tales]. im sure youve got a sense of humour or you wouldnt be in the scene you are; so what sort of humour makes you tick??.wickedness, satire and subversion came forth.quickly after the hated type of comedy spawed forth; of the ' normal' corporate gravy train spotting.like adverts for beer, endless .game shows. id heard rumours that attila had been asked to do the comparing at the opening of the millenium dome;is that true i asked.i also asked what he thought of the dome.a quick reply came forth ...a rant of strong words directed at me and the dome bounced of me onto the wall behind. i quickly got onto the subject of music!!;attila/s ears pricked and a note of the Clash flowed from attila/s mouth.the early demonic days of punk always hold a section close to my heart he explained; it was mainly a working class uprising of rant and art.the Clash upheld those principles for a while with those lyrics sounding as if theyd been plucked straight from the bible of marx.there mix of orthodox punk with slices of reggae; really did help to bring the sound of rebellion to the masses.but attila did mention his like of Marc Bolan ; and mentioned his new cd has a Marc Bolan tribute song on it.he/s used it in conjunction as a explanation to the hudinui of justice "SCUM BALL PINOCHET". attila also payed tribute to all the artists hed performed with during his many tours[ive seen him perform on many of these gigs;all the bands tell me that if attila isnt allowed to go on last he throws a wobbler]. your obviously keen on history?;who are your historical heroes then.is it true Neville Chamberlin is one of them??.;TITO.yes TITO was one of my favourite historical heroes.a man who brought a number of different people together against all odds; to live in peace for years under one banner.he then said listen to my song "SARAJEVO"; 10 years after the fall of the Berlin wall .millions and millions of people all over eastern europe feel betrayed and exploited;lied to and in the case of what they laughingly called 'formerYugoslavia'.far worse;Sarajevo is for them."TITO WAS RIGHT". the subject of europe always causes a chill to my heart.its near destruction from the two world wars its had ;basically caused through ultra nationalism.and now after two warnings, we still dont learn from those unforgettable near escapes.which could of led to a unrecognizeable world.people in britain havent learnt;the far right obtained thousands of votes in the recent elections.cant people translate the similarities in history ??. i basically know what happened with the issue of Brighton Football Club; i saw you one saturday on football focus slumped in a black swivel type?chair[ MASTERMIND type ].i thought ; i know that voice!!.i did it was attila the stockbroker ranting to ralph dellor or whoever!!. so let us know the dodgy dealings of a pack of jackals attacking a wounded animal!;it was !!.the club was in financial ruin and was bought for peanuts and sold for profit.the repeat affair carried on and the position
[L-I] interview with tom greenhalgh[vocalist with the band-THE MEKONS]
Taking their name from the arch enemy of the British Symbol of the Cold War, the hero "Dan Dare"; their name probably tells us enough about them.Though perhaps not! - The Mekons are one of the most unique, complex, overlooked, underestimated collectives from the classic era which people define as punk/new wave. For three decades now the Mekons as a collaborative group have created art, music and writings under one moniker.Coming out of the same leftish circles as The Gang of Four and Delta 5 from Leeds, perhaps through coincidence or was it because of the fact all the groups attended the Leeds universities fine art department at around the same time.T.J. Clarke a lecturer there at the time was a member of the Situationists International, one of the few British members of this organisation; was it his influence in his art teachings. [Hmm ... Could it have anything to do with the fact that half the Gang of Four and 3 regular participants in the early Mekons including Tom had earlier spent a lot of time in the art department of the same mid-ranking public school in Kent, headed by the father of one of them? Some of the younger teachers in the school had clearly been influenced by the ferment of the Sixties, and there were interesting discussions in class about the Prague Spring, the Vietnam War etc etc. There was also a wider scene, with many drawing together around the Rock Against Racism banner and therefore to some extent influenced by the IS/SWP. However another Marxist tradition was represented in the broadly 'radical' bands which came out of this period in Leeds - Scritti Politti, apparently reflecting the interest in Gramsci then found amongst Eurocommunists! Webmaster] The formation of the Mekons was inspired after seeing the Sex Pistols perform at Leeds Polytechnic in 1976. They would take the route a lot of art students did in this golden era of using music as an extension of art away from its increasing turgid, toothless form. The rules of music had changed; artists were formed out of audiences anyone could "get up and have a go". The Mekons would follow this route, as with the punk attitude of being a working class movement, anti- fascist and with a radical criticism of society, royalty and at the start keeping at arms length from the rock industry it wanted to destroy. It was also one of the movements to push women to the front of music. Examples of this can be seen through countless material produced by the Mekons. The first single, produced on the indie label Fast Product called Never Been in a Riot symbolises a riot where neo-nazis attacked their radical gay club. The b-side to this 32 Weeks was a left handed screech about the number of weeks it take to save up for an everyday object like a refrigerator. After their second classic single 'Where are you?' they signed and made a compromised album on the Virgin label. More excellent material was produced in 1979 Work all Week again a song describing the reality of working class life and in 1980 Teeth. But with the movement running out of steam a lot of bands unfortunately became mainstream and a shadow of their former selves. The movement that didn't want to become fashionable had become part of fashionable pop music. The Mekons did not, and in 1980 signed to the indie label Red Rino and to this day have recorded some fine material on various labels. The latest being Mekons United (Quarterstick/Touch and Go album) 1996 (23-track CD with a history book of the Mekons) available from Ellipsis London Ltd, 2 Rufus Street London N1 6PE, and ME; 14 track CD album (Quarterstick QS53CD) So I'll leave you with a quote from the 1980 single Teeth: "We sit in pubs, and talk of times, "Of groups we knew, and all the signs, "Of war and money, oppression and more" Interview with Tom Greenhalgh of the Mekons "The Mekons" formed while studying at the fine art department at Leeds University. Could you describe some of the highs and lows of this period? The highs: The feeling that suddenly anything was possible... anyone could form a band [or whatever] there and then, it was like 'year zero' also a strong sense of collaboration and community, pooling resources and ideas. The lows: The attempts by the BNP/National Front to muscle in on the scene - arguments and problems with local promoters etc not being prepared to do anything about it. "The Mekons" have been described as the original D.I.Y. band which typified the music from the punk/new wave era. Could you comment on the way, where and why they adopted this approach? It seemed that the do-it-yourself, think-for-yourself thing was the loud and clear 'message' of punk, if there was any 'message' at all. Things happened the way they did because it seemed the obvious way to go about it. Were the "Mekons" influenced by the head of Leeds University fine art department teacher T.J. Clarke who was one of the few British members

[L-I] ANGELIC UPSTARTS- PART2
Getting back to the government we've go now though we spoke about the question a lot of people ask; "Why after 20 years of a sinister Tory Government, and then obtaining a Labour government with a massive majority (remembering they've spent 20 year in the wilderness talking about the evils of a capitalist Tory government). Have they dropped all their principles and changed so much"?Mensi angrily talked about the face that they've got a "cushy" now. They have a fixation with privatisation because they've seen the success of the Tories making the rich, richer. They amazingly don’t want to upset a few people by lessening the gap between rich and poor.Is this what Labour are talking about when they burble on about new deals between industry and workers? More wage cuts/freezes, less trade union rights (in reality). You can’t upset a few industrialists, but you can upset millions of workers who voted for you to help them. Mining was important around the North East and Mensi was a miner, I spoke to him and Kid Stoker about the miners strike.Mensi's blunt, straight to the point, mode kicked in. He quickly put the blame on the Labour Party for the failure of the strike. He did say though it did flush out the real enemies of the miners, people. He did regard thought that the Heath government in the 1970's had this idea of running the mining industry; but still believes though that Neil Kinnock quite ably abetted Thatcher's brainstorm of splitting the Trade Union movement, hammering whole working class communities into the ground. He did quote "Not the Welsh windbag; but scumbag". Kid Stoker had a lot to say about this subject that always hits a nerve with a lot of miners; especially North East working class people. Kid Stoker emphasised this with telling us about the benefit gigs they played; the gigs were on the front line. It was their communities, if you were lucky you left school and obtained work in the mines. He spoke of personal contributions from people who lost homes due to striking for their jobs, their future. Non-political people were turned into flying pickets.Kid Stoker spoke about the incident that really stood out during the miners strike. During the end of the strike, asleep one morning, he was suddenly woken up by a loud roar. It was the sound of men, striking Wearmouth miners. The scab bus had turned up for work with the usual 200 police escort, he couldn't see anything but hear. "And that cry, that roar of men, confirmed to me, then more than ever, the sheer power of working men." "It was the sheer realisation of the power of the working class and when the power is truly harnessed when that roar becomes truly unified, then the whole world will hear it." Someone has to sort out problems, we have many in this country, who would you like to see as prime minister to tackle them."Arthur Scargill" Mensi said in an answer quick enough to be given on a prize show. (As long as it wasn't a Jimmy Tarbuck, Ted Rodgers, Paul Daniels, Bob Monkhouse one!)Kid Stoker replied "Tony Benn"; he said he'd like to see Alistair Campbell try and spin Tony Benn out of his crease. One question though I was nagging to ask the panel; was a question that even Colombo wouldn't even be able to work out! Tony Blair recently said that class divisions are over now, class isn’t an issue any more.I don't understand. I am working class and so are you Mensi and Kid Stoker. So if class isn't an issue, and divisions are over why is… 1. Grants being abolished (only people with a lot of money can get higher education). 2. Trade Union rights being watered down in various ways (new titles, new deals, working councils instead of unions). I thought you needed unions to watch over working people. The ones that are unfortunately low paid etc. Aren't they usually working class. 3. A Small but over looked point; if class isn't an issue then and there's no divisions (as in the word division _ act of dividing, barrier, section) Why on our railway carriages, (well used to be ours until we had them sold off) do we have first and second class apartments. Why are we also reminded of our class divisions on the train over the tannoy about services you can get from first class apartments?Or does the new government look at the word division in other terms (Army unit, method of finding how many times one number is). Mensi did give an answer, a short one. "Tony has his head stuck…" So after that short answer I asked Mensi what does the future hold for the working class in this country? He sadly replied that the working class has been eroded in this country, they're becoming dinosaurs. Tony Blair wants the working class to be unchallenging and quiet proles.I thought that's what Margaret Thatcher wanted? Ireland was mentioned and Mensi sprang into action, "love to see a united Ireland". Although he thought the Conservatives got the ball rolling with the idea; not through humanitarian
