I'm going to push these to trunk now and merge it back to 6.3.

For now, I'm just going to add Ken to the acknowledgments and remove
ALFS project leader from Jeremy's description. If anyone feels this
should be updated further, please speak up. Otherwise, I'd like to
punt further changes to post-6.3.

I think you misunderstood my intention. I wasn't talking about
implementing a full wiki, or replacing the current website. What I
wanted to do was *add* some sort of framework or form, or something that
will allow *editors* to quickly and easily add news items. The news
items would then be dropped onto the current pages, much like the svn
logs are done already.

This is something that was requested long ago, but we never got around
to finishing it.

I would really not want anyone except editors to update the web site.
Its really pretty easy. svn checkout ... (once); edit html; svn commit
-m '...' and its done.

I just checked and I think all the active editors have commit privs, so
that should not be a problem. If we've left out someone, give me a yell
and I'll fix it.

Cairographics just started using ikiwiki, which has backends for
svn/git/etc. It allows the developers to make commits via git, but
changes by ordinary users from the wiki interface are committed to
git, too. I don't know much about it, but it seems really cool.

Thank you, Randy. Yes, I think it would be nice to see all the LFS
projects do more with regards to the website. I wonder if perhaps we
could get a more blog-like interface to the news items sections, some
sort of framework that would drop in place to the current site. I'll

LOL. I just did a google on linuxfromscratch and got 391,000 hits. The

I sensed the same exact thing when Alex mentioned his thoughts. I'm

This is some of the most refreshing words I've heard in a long time,
and would do wonders for the project. Jeremy, thank you for saying it.
I feel guilty because I don't update the BLFS web site more often.
(haven't even announced Ag's acceptance of an Editor's role, now that
I think about it).

Think Google. Stuff gets indexed so fast now, that we could probably
create a lot more traffic with frequent updates to the web site. Let's
all strive to keep the various project's web pages updated with some
new stuff. It's hard (as there just isn't anything really "new" any
more), but doable.

I'll try. Anyone else?

I've thought this as well (and very well phrased, Jeremy). But only
to a small degree. But this is coming from a guy that isn't really
the best PR figure either.

There is merit to those words. I will remember this post from Jeremy,

Yes, with a minor path change. Lets use:

http://anduin.linuxfromscratch.org/sources/LFS/lfs-packages/&version;/shadow-&shadow-version;.tar.bz2

It's not dead. It's slow, but it isn't dead. I think you set your
standards for the project too high. There's only two of us and you
expect the level of support and maintenance that could only really be

As for the efforts you make in recruiting testers, perhaps you need to

Lastly, frankly, I think you scare people away, at least to a certain

Sounds good, the lfs package repo won't be having that file be removed
for years, I still even have 6.0 packages in the rsync repo, so any
stable mirror of lfs such as anduin should be fine. lfs-matrix.net is
my mirror and has been around for a while (not sure how long, haven't
kept track) and I have no plans of stopping mirroring.

Well, I was putting out feelers as much as anything. I don't know what
the right place to host it is. In BLFS, we often use the little file
repo on anduin, but we don't have a similar setup for LFS. I think
downloads would probably be a good place, though, since shadow is
shared across both books.

I'll wait for Dan to fix LFS, and I'll just put whatever he uses in

Yeah, that site is gone. In BLFS we're using this:

There are plenty of places we can put it on one of the LFS servers.

I just found something I'd like changed in the bootscripts. A while
back, I started removing 2>/dev/null redirection since it hides
messages for errors.

http://wiki.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/changeset/8167

I just hit one I missed in checkfs. We currently have

fsck ${options} -a -A -C -T 2>/dev/null

Which conveniently hid the info the I had a LABEL wrong in fstab.
Instead I was dumped directly into "There's an unrecoverable error,
we're halting" and was really worried my disk was failing. Once I
commented out 2>/dev/null, it was clear what the problem was.

Does anyone have any objections if I remove the 2>/dev/null above and
regenerate the bootscripts?

LFS-6.3-rc2 has been generated

2007-08-12 Thread Bruce Dubbs
The web site has been updated too, but the release announcement has not
yet been sent.

  http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/6.3-rc2/

The only outstanding issue before 6.3 final that I know about is to
finish getting the acknowledgments page updated properly.

Are there any last minute updates I need to make before sending the -rc2
release announcement?

The problem is that I can only release the minimal CD in the near
future. The full CD is essentially untested, so a long delay is inevitable.

I _will_ put a full CD with the 6.3 book on ums.usu.ru on the same day
as the release or on the next day, depending on availability of the
updated jhalfs - but I won't call this a stable CD.

Note that a maintained CD essentially doesn't exist. I will not develop
it after the 6.3 release.

How do you propose to do this? I cannot recruit even testers. See -
there was only one relevant reply to my request to test the CD on Intel
hardware. The project is dead.

Seems to me this is a recent list plus an old list with a lot
of the middle missing - like after Jesse left in a huff and before Greg
did (and then popped in again). But as I can't remember the names
maybe I should shut up...

I'm no longer the ALFS project leader. But, for that matter, I don't
know who is. Development on jhalfs continues via Manuel and George B.
(who, btw, isn't mentioned), but not sure if that's necessary for the
actual LFS book. In fact the actual ALFS project is a little
unorganized, I think.

BTW, you mention some CLFS developers, but not all. And some BLFS devs,
but not all. What is the prereq. for getting mentioned?

Lastly, Ken Moffat is missing. He has LFS commit privs, I believe...
Yep, his name even appears in the Changelog.

This isn't and should never be a showstopper for LFS. Since its
inception as a project, the LiveCD always _followed_ LFS releases.
People who follow development of LFS should be aware that a stable
LiveCD based on the just-released LFS book will be available in the near
future.

If your goal is to avoid requests for support based on using the wrong
CD or people looking for a CD that doesn't exist, I have a couple of
suggestions:

* Request that the LFS release announcement mention that a stable CD
  will be released shortly.
* Recruit more LiveCD developers/maintainers

I can't see where DJ is mentioned, though I believe he should for the
work he's put into the bootscripts.

Alexander is listed as a current *and* former team member. One or the
other please. :-)

Mark Stone is listed as contributing Belgarath "the linuxfromscratch.org
server." This is not accurate any longer.

I don't see the need to include Jim Gifford in the acknowledgments.
Perhaps there's something that he's contributed directly to LFS, but
as far as the Patches project goes, he doesn't even update the repo
with patches he puts in his own CLFS patches repo.

Surely, we can't call him Patches Project Manager any longer. Or even
affiliated with it for that matter.

Nahh, don't bother. You'll just have to fix up all the other commits,
too. Let's just keep this release moving. I'm confident in the bash
fix.

I can delete the tag and regenerate. I haven't built the release yet.

Since you already tagged -rc2, I'd just go ahead and start the book
generation, etc. These will just have to go in for 6.3 final.

Great. There are two changes I'd like to make.

1. Change the bash test fix so the stdin redirection only affects the
one test. Suggested by Greg Schafer. Probably means I'll add this
