Help W/ FDD

From: John Liu <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Help W/ FDD

I bought a used Libretto 100CT. It arrived with Win 98 installed and
everything seemed to be working fine. I installed the TDIAG.EXE,
TSETUP.EXE, and TVER.EXE files from the Companion Diskette. Then my floppy
disk ceased working. It is getting power (light goes on during bootup).
But Windows reports that the "Y-Data FDD" has no driver. I tried
installing the standard floppy disk controller, no use.

What should I do? I can boot from the FDD, so it does work, it just
doesn't seem to work in Win 98 and I don't know where the drivers are to
fix it.

Any available in Australia? What is the best source for international
shipping? current price (or best price) Anyone want to sell one? Or even
a standard battery?

I am going hiking for three weeks and want to keep weight down as
much as poss. I envisage using the lib about 15 minutes a day max to
dump the log from my GPS So I need to have about 5-6 hours of
battery... don't want to carry a sealed lead-acid.. too heavy...

Anyone able to mail me one for a price?

   Best Regards

P.S. Is there a site with a step-by-step guide to setting up a new HD? I
have tracked down a 4.3 gig I can get for free

Shouldn't matter on the L110. The Libretto <110 models do have the problem
where the BIOS only sees the first 8.4GB unless the OS bypasses the BIOS and
reads this information directly from the HD. Linux and Windows 2K can both do
this without the use of an additional disk manager program.

Unfortunately, with all <=L110 models, no BIOS can handle >8.4GB HDs without
additional help or an OS that can handle >8.4GB HDs like Linux and Win2K.

If nothing else, you can buy them for $20 at www.buy.com then sell the on
Ebay.com for $25-30 before 'shipping' charges (get them for $10 and make more money).

Just not competitve vs. solid-state flash cards which are not as magnetic
field & dust sensitive, and the fact that nobody (today's laptop buyers) use
them vs. the built-in CD-RW drives. After all, with most new 500+Mhz notebooks
with CD-RW drives selling for only ~$1000, and CD-R discs going for <$0.10 per
disc (if not free with rebates in Sunday paper ads), it makes no sense at all
to use a Clik! disc for the majority, esp. when the discs aren't readable in
other peoples machines without the adapter (whereas CD-R discs are).

However, for the single user wanting some portable storage to hold data just
in case the HD goes, it's not a bad option considering how cheap they are for
40MB, and that media is going for a decently cheap price on www.ebay.com.

  --

Otherwise, it's like this. Iomega sent me one for free. I stared at the
pretty metal box and the contents in wonder for a few hours, played with it in
laptop and PDA (doesn't work in Sharp Zaurus japanese PDA - too little power to
spin it up), thought the transfer rates were so anciently slow ala a ZIP drive
(we're talking slow like a floppy, not fast like a 16x+CD-RW drive; slower than
a smartmedia flash card even!), and have the Zio! USB SmartMedia pocketable,
flash card reader where I can plug in my 128MB card into any PC to transfer
files, stared at the pretty metal box some more, then sold it on Ebay for quite
a bit of money last year to buy something more useful, like a Lexar compact
flash card with seperate PCMCIA adapter (the Lexar cards come with free USB
adapters, but you'll need a seperate $10 PCMCIA adapter to PCMCIA slots and
laptops w/o USB).

I don't understand what you mean about "3.5" PC Card Adapter"?

The only adapter that would fit that description that I have seen is for smart media
cards to a 3.5" floppy. This won't work for
CF, pcmcia or anything else except I think there is a sony stick version too.

As far as desktop pcmcia slot costing 5x, you don't shop around enough. :-) The last
three I have bought cost me $25 each
from a vendor on Ebay. All brand new in the box dual slot pcmcia with 1 type II and 1
type III. The only drawback is that
they use an ISA slot but they work flawlessly in win9x/me. Couldn't get it to work in
win2k but NT's pcmcia support has
always been bad, hopefully it will be better in winXp.

Repairing Lib 100/110 batteries with 50/70 guts

2001-07-12 Thread Tom Stangl

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Tom Stangl)
Subject: Repairing Lib 100/110 batteries with 50/70 guts

I don't know if this has ever been mentioned before, but you can pull the
guts from a PA2498U battery and drop them right into a 2502/2503 battery
case.

I had a dead 2503, and before selling my Lib50 with 6-8 batteries (I'm not
sure how many I have, but it's Too Many), I opened up a 2498, and while the
board inside is different than that of the 2503, the plug and connections
are the same. So I dropped the entire innards of the 2498 into the 2503
shell, slapped it in the 2499 charger, and it charged. Slapped it in a
Lib100, it ran.

So if you have a dead 100/110 battery pack and have an old extended batt
for a 50/70 laying around or can get one cheap, you can get the 2503 pack
working.

Problem solved on my end. While I had the same problems as Mike and kept
makig changes to the Interrupt & I/O and Original Configurations settings
for the floppy I kept noticing that the Interrupt request would say there
was a conflict and it was being used by the generic IRDA device, which I
don't use. I checked the "Use automatic settings" box under the Resources
tab which allowed the floppy to change to a different interrupt request with
no conflicts but it still wouldn't be able to read the floppy.

I finally disabled the IRDA device in the Control Panel under its Original
Configuration box (removed the check mark) and rebooted, the IRDA is now
listed as disabled and the floppy - drum roll! - now works fine. Problem is,
what do I do if I ever need the IRDA? And how the hell did this all change
by itself, after my system crashed one day? Anyone else ever run into the
same problem with the IRDA device settings?

BTW, thanks to those who emailed me and tried to help, it's appreciated! -

Try the moof project: It's an mp3 plater on a floppy using linux

http://home.htwm.de/fhackenb/projekt/moof/htmldoc/index.php3?lang/eng/hardware

It includes an IR input for remote control.

Failing that you need a really stripped down linux install.

Eiren,

Iomega will be coming out with a 100mb version of the PocketZip (CLIK!)

seeing the extensive prices cuts on the current 40mb disks and accessories.

Hi Richard,

Pending the arrival of my 110 (Thanks Ken!) I plan on converting the 70
into a primarily jukebox role (as opposed to my only system).

I currently dual boot linux and windows on a 30 GB drive. I use linux
for everything except Quicken and Quickbooks. I use mpg123 from the command
line which is an excellent mp3 player. There are countless front ends
already written for it, many are curses based (which will run without
x windows) and many are xwindows, gtk, kde, whatever GUI based.

I'm still looking around for the front end to use, but this is definitely
the system for me to build my jukebox. If I can't find something I like
I'll write my own using perl and mySql. The best part is that on my 70ct
clocked at 150mhz, the mpg123 process takes less than 50% CPU to play
mp3's. If you think of this as being roughly the equivalent of 75mhz
of power, you should have plenty left over on an oc'd 50ct. Oh, and even
with the PCMCIA drivers loading and getting a dhcp address, etc., my
70ct boots rather quickly. From hitting the power button, here's a
timeline:

0 - hit power button
18 - POST finishes
20 - LILO menu
44 - kernel almost completely loaded, waiting for dhcp address
61 - login prompt

So... 61 seconds to boot up. The first 20 are almost totally BIOS POST,
so nothing can help that, and the remaining 41 could be trimmed down a lot
if you don't have PCMCIA drivers, DHCPCD, sshd, other stuff loading.
Linux is supposed to suspend very well, but I haven't dug around for the
command to suspend... must be in the APM howto or something...

Anyway, my Linux is built from scratch, if you want to use a distro
you'll have to do some trimming to get rid of lots of startup junk,
but it can be done, and you can probably got comparable results
with a little tweaking. I'll probably hand-tailor a root partition
with a minimal kernel and startup scripts for my jukebox when I get
to that point...

If people are interested I'll post updates when I get the front-end
working. Feel free to email me if you want to discuss off-list.

Other options? QNX is supposed to be extremely lightweight and should
be possible to build SOME kind of MP3 player on it, maybe even mpg123.
It's also designed for realtime applications, so it might very well
handle MP3 playback smoother than Linux, but that's really a guess on
my part. Check out http://www.qnx.com if you're interested...

Good luck,

David

[ BEWARE LONG REPLY! :) ]

On Thu, Jul 12, 2001 at 06:40:47AM -0700, Richard Harrison scribbled:
# Well my on going experiment of turning my Lib 50 into a jukebox continues.
#
# To date I've:
# overclocked the Libby to 100

I should do this, my 50ct still runs at 75mhz and plays
mp3 audio (downsampled to 22100khz) without skipping.

# installed a 13 gig hard drive

I should also do this .. I'm still using my 810meg drive :)

# replaced Explorer with LiteShell

I replaced it with FreeBSD.

# tried about 15 players to find one that wouldn't skip/stutter

I use mpg123 .. command-line player for most any OS.

# So, here are my remaining problems after spending two weeks on holidays with
# the Libby in the car.
#
# It still takes TOO LONG TO BOOT! it can take five minutes from pressing
# the power button until I start hearing tunes!

I agree .. i use the 'hibernate' feature on mine, which cuts a
few minutes off, but still takes a while.

# Occasionally it would still stutter.
# Twice it shut down due to overheating.

Never had this problem.. one idea is to flip the libby on its
top so that air can get to the bottom more easily.. just a theory,
but maybe? :)

# I admit I've got a pretty high standard I'm trying to hit, but I think it
# should be attainable. Essentially, I what the Libby to behave like an audio
# component. No one would accept a CD player that took five minutes to start
# up. No one would use a radio that skipped occasionally. All I want is
# perfection!

Very attainable, except maybe the startup/shutdown times..

# Now I'm back to exploring other options. I'm convinced that the real
# villain it Windows, so I'm asking the list for other suggestions.

FreeBSD! (or maybe Linux, but i find Linux slower on my un-upgraded libby)

# Ideally, I thing I need an OS without a GUI so that I can get a quicker boot
# time. But, I still need a player that will handle the huge number of songs
# I have. So far, I've been looking for a DOS player, but can't find anything
# that will do more that play one song at a time or may be a sub directory at
# a time. Also, stopping to type in command line stuff isn't very safe in a
# moving car!

I suspect that I wouldn't have to downsample at all, but you hardly notice it
anyway .. I'm using FreeBSD 4.1.1-RELEASE (should be upgraded, but it works,
so why bother?) with XFree86 3.3.6, even, and an older (pre-GNOME-crap)
version of icewm.. I've rigged a custom program to allow me to close the lid
and use one of the mouse buttons as a 'skip to next song' feature, as per
a suggestion I read on this list a while ago..Pictures of my setup can be
found at
  http://minix.nailed.org/~jontow/pictures/valiant/audio/audio.html

If anyone wants this program, I'm sure I could dig up the source
that I used .. it isn't all-original code, I cheated and found an
xlib example and went from there..

# Can anyone suggest a DOS player or a Linux console player?

mpg123.

# Can anyone make any other suggests?

I'm sure I could, but lets not make this reply too huge, for now :)

I hope you're not planning to leave with one or 2 charged batteries and
having it work like that. First off, an extended battery on a L50 might work
almost 3 hours at a clip just off charge. That does not mean you could use
it for 12 quarter hours, 15 minutes a day for 12 days. Rechargeable
batteries simply don't discharge linearly. They self discharge, and the
action of starting the computer will also suck a lot of juice too...

Maybe you thought of this but the way I read your question it seems you are
going off the power mains for 3 weeks.

On the other hand, a big expensive solar cell might keep things topped off
nicely.

Thanks. I bought a few. Do you think they're:

a) discontinuing them; or
b) coming out with a higher capacity version?

The special driver you need connects between the replicator and the wall
outlet.

Hi all,

IMO,
* Iomega Adapter connecting Clik PC card to a desktop costs >100USD!
* buying a 3.5" Adapter /* for any PC Card */ costs <100USD (look at
specs for such an 3.5" adapter, www.carry.com.tw)
* Clik media ~19USD? After a little calc, /* cash per MB */ is epsilon
for CD-R media.
* Clik is slower than any CD Drive(Look at sony's site for a portable
CDR/RW >>>CRX75A-RP 8*4*24CD R/RW dims:129*134*15mm, 200g)

Subject: Extended Batteries for 50ct

Any available in Australia? What is the best source for international
shipping? current price (or best price) Anyone want to sell one? Or even
a standard battery?

I am going hiking for three weeks and want to keep weight down as
much as poss. I envisage using the lib about 15 minutes a day max to
dump the log from my GPS So I need to have about 5-6 hours of
battery... don't want to carry a sealed lead-acid.. too heavy...

Anyone able to mail me one for a price?

   Best Regards
   Dan Baker.

P.S. Is there a site with a step-by-step guide to setting up a new HD? I
have tracked down a 4.3 gig I can get for free
