Re: [LIB] Overlay program wanted
Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 11:14:14 -0500 From: David Nedved [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [LIB] Overlay program wanted Hi Raymond, Thanks for the response... I've given up on keeping my 8gb windows intall. I've gone ahead and intalled IBM disk manager (couldn't find the ez-drive posts you mentioned) and let it create one 8gb partition. Interesting that when I went to install version 9.5.7 it wanted to create one partition of 39.9gb (ie it saw the whole drive) but I went back to 9.4.3 which created one partition of 8gb (ie it only saw the bios limited part) and then upgraded to 9.5.7 for the heck of it. Now I've got my 8gb partition, I've got my overlay, and when I boot up fdisk sees the whole drive. I guess I understand a little bit more about how these overlays work now. I guess they install an additional 8k at the beginning of the drive, and then trick the BIOS into thinking it's not there? Now, the way I used to do it was pop the drive into my linux desktop, and manually create the second partition skipping about 80MB or so for the hibernation partition. I didn't have a problem the last time I did it, but that doesn't necesarily mean anything. Am I going to have problems since I'm modifying the partition table with an OS that's not running through the overlay? How else do I create a second partition while skipping the hibernation space? The dos fdisk is so retarded I can't even make more than one primary partition even though I know that the DOS partition table allows for up to 4... all I can do is create an extended partition, and there can only be one, and I'm sure it will create it in the bad place at the end of the 8gb... I've actually got a backup of my win98 install, I'll post a separate message asking for help on how to restore it! Thanks a ton for the responses! I've used IBM Disk Manager before, but it has a horribly cryptic menu system. The only options that would seem to make sense, are to convert the drive to their proprietary format (what does that mean?) or to let it blow away my partition table and recreate it. I'm using EZ-Bios 9.06W by Micro House International (it did ship for Western Digital but it doesn't seem to mind the Fujitsu I've got) and have had it work nicely on both my L50 and L100. Somewhere in the archives are 2 speals by me on how to get it all working with various setups (for instance I'm now using in with a 20 gig Fujitsu, triple booting Win98SE, Red Hat Linux 6.2 and Win2k, all accessing the hard drive through the overlay). I did run into a few pitfalls which you may like to avoid! Search for ezdrive.zip or ezdrv909.zip in the archives. Note that EZ-DRIVE distribution version 9.09W actually contains EZ-BIOS version 9.06W ... go figure ... hehe Just remember that once it's on there, any time you modify the partition table, you *must* have booted from the hard drive and loaded EZ-Bios. Forgetting to do this is a sure way of screwing up the partition tables as everything will be offset by 8KBytes. Also, whilst it *is* possible to install it and not destroy your current partitioning scheme, in my experience unless it's a stock standard partitioning scheme, it's better to install it and get it to blow everything away. Oh and remember to leave space for hibernation at between 1010 and 1040 cylinders! Hope this helps! - Raymond --- /~\ | | Does fuzzy logic tickle?| | ___ | My HDD has no reverse. [LIB] ghosting windows installations under linux
Date: Tue, 19 Nov 2002 11:21:27 -0500 From: David Nedved [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: ghosting windows installations under linux Hi All, Anyone have experience using standard linux tools to ghost a windows partition? I had to blow away and repartition my hard drive to get the overlay installed. Prior to this I popped the drive into my linux desktop and tarred up the entire drive. I've got my drive reinstalled, I've got the overlay installed, I've got it sys'd from a win98 boot disk. I tried extracting all the files from the tarball back onto the disk (except for the dos files in the root directory: msdos.sys, command.com, etc.). Now the machine boots back into the command line as if windows isn't even there. If I type win it complains about himem.sys not being in the windows directory (even though it is). I thought these were all just standard files, and that other than the boot sectors, the positions of these files physically on the disk didn't really matter? I've got the output of a dd of the entire partition, and I'm able to extract it to another drive and it works just fine, but since I've installed the overlay, I'm expecting that my partition is approx 8kb smaller, so I can't dd the contents of the old partition onto it since it's smaller. Has anyone else ever used linux tools to backup and restore a windows intallation? Anyone know enough about the guts of win98se to know how to get it booting into the window manager instead of just the command line? Thanks in advance for any pointers, David ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ - Archives ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. I've downloaded ezmaker.exe from Western Digital, but after going through all the hassle of making a diskette and booting from it, it refuses to run since my disk is a Toshiba brand, not a WD. L110 - Win2k - 2 issues
Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 15:40:10 -0400 From: David Nedved [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: L110 - Win2k - 2 issues Hi All, I just upgraded my Lib110 (64MB, 30GB HD) to Win2K and I have to say that so far I am very impressed. Very good driver support in general, and very few issues. Much improved reliability. Now for the down side - I have two problems remaining. First is that it won't automatically shut it self down. I upgraded BIOS to 8.1 and made sure that I had installed the Toshiba Power Extensions from the Toshiba site, but it still hangs at the screen saying It is now safe to turn off your computer. I know it's APM BIOS, but how do I make it shut off? Second, is there a Win2K driver available for the PCMCIA floppy drive? If so, I couldn't find it on Toshiba's site or by letting Win2K detect it... not a big deal since nobody uses floppies these days, but just thought I would check... Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 11:10:44 -0400 From: David Nedved [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: your mail Hi Richard, Pending the arrival of my 110 (Thanks Ken!) I plan on converting the 70 into a primarily jukebox role (as opposed to my only system). I currently dual boot linux and windows on a 30 GB drive. I use linux for everything except Quicken and Quickbooks. I use mpg123 from the command line which is an excellent mp3 player. There are countless front ends already written for it, many are curses based (which will run without x windows) and many are xwindows, gtk, kde, whatever GUI based. I'm still looking around for the front end to use, but this is definitely the system for me to build my jukebox. If I can't find something I like I'll write my own using perl and mySql. The best part is that on my 70ct clocked at 150mhz, the mpg123 process takes less than 50% CPU to play mp3's. If you think of this as being roughly the equivalent of 75mhz of power, you should have plenty left over on an oc'd 50ct. Oh, and even with the PCMCIA drivers loading and getting a dhcp address, etc., my 70ct boots rather quickly. From hitting the power button, here's a timeline: 0 - hit power button 18 - POST finishes 20 - LILO menu 44 - kernel almost completely loaded, waiting for dhcp address 61 - login prompt So... 61 seconds to boot up. The first 20 are almost totally BIOS POST, so nothing can help that, and the remaining 41 could be trimmed down a lot if you don't have PCMCIA drivers, DHCPCD, sshd, other stuff loading. Linux is supposed to suspend very well, but I haven't dug around for the command to suspend... must be in the APM howto or something... Anyway, my Linux is built from scratch, if you want to use a distro you'll have to do some trimming to get rid of lots of startup junk, but it can be done, and you can probably got comparable results with a little tweaking. I'll probably hand-tailor a root partition with a minimal kernel and startup scripts for my jukebox when I get to that point... If people are interested I'll post updates when I get the front-end working. Feel free to email me if you want to discuss off-list. Other options? QNX is supposed to be extremely lightweight and should be possible to build SOME kind of MP3 player on it, maybe even mpg123. It's also designed for realtime applications, so it might very well handle MP3 playback smoother than Linux, but that's really a guess on my part. Check out http://www.qnx.com if you're interested... Can anyone suggest a DOS player or a Linux console player? Can anyone make any other suggests? If this fails, I may just buy a hard drive based MP3 player (archos) and use the Libby for something else. Bye for now. _ Do You Yahoo!? Have problems installing LINUX on my Libretto 70CT Hi, I run Linux on my 70CT, but it's LFS -- Linux From Scratch. I've loaded RedHat 6.2 on a 50CT though... I loaded it on a desktop, then swapped the hard drive into the Libretto -- much easier than messing with boot disks, zip drives, whatever. A boot-up floppy would have to either be a standalone floppy (the net boot floppy is a single floppy but I don't know if it works with your network card plus it requires a good connection to an FTP server) or get the kernel support for Libretto FD built into the kernel on your boot disk. I have no idea if that kernel support is kept current, or where to get it. I also don't relish the idea of making a custom boot disk. Since I have a working 70CT running Linux, let me know if I can do anything to help you get started, but really, your easiest route is to slap the hard drive into a desktop and load it that way. Just one guy's opinion, you don't even owe me the traditional $0.02! The opl3sa2 driver I believe is 16bit while the opl3sa driver is 8bit. I didn't even try to get the opl3sa driver working. I'm not much on MIDI, but I believe that the mpu401 emulation is what your midi player will use. You might want to explore and try to find out if your chipset is listening on the default port (0x330) or a different one... I don't have any MIDI files, but if you want to tell me where to get a file and a player I can try to duplicate your problem if that will help... I don't know if this wil help anyone or not, but I run Win98 straight out of the box with no additional drivers at all. I've played around with downloading drivers from Tosh for my 70, but I've had so many bad experiences with them that I've stopped. To me it's all very confusing, there are two or three different packages that contain several programs each (magnifying glass, floppy drive driver, etc.) but I found that if you install all of them on 98 (some are apparently written for 95 ?) then you'll end up with a machine that won't boot. I had to comment vxd's out of one of the windows files to get it to boot after my last bout of installing everything. Even then I never used any of them. Anyway, the lesson I've learned from all that is not to even bother with Toshiba drivers. Everything on my 70 works fine. Video, sound, PCMCIA, IRDA, docking stations, everything. Well, the floppy doesn't work outside DOS, but I've never liked floppies anyway and haven't used one for anything but a bootdisk for years Anyway, like I said, maybe this will help someone...I don't have a hairy lightbulb (and personally I think this sounds a little scary!), or a floppy driver, and couldn't be happier! I can't change screen brightness, and that might be nice, but it's not worth the hassle with the drivers! My motto - if it works don't mess with the drivers! Programs which let you scan the maps in and calibrate them (like OziExplorer) seem like too much trouble to me, although if you stick to one particular area a lot then maybe it wouldn't be too bad to set up a map or two. The upside with them is that as long as you can get a paper map of your area, you can use the software. I have used the Delorme Tripmate GPS and now have a Garmin GPS 45 on the boat which interfaces brilliantly to the Libretto. The commonly available 'barrel' connector on the 50/70 made it a lot easier to get generic power supplies or hook up and external battery to them. Not to be a cynic, but I would expect that's exactly why they DID go to a new proprietary power connector -- to try to force people upgrading from earlier Libretto's to buy new accessories, and to make it harder to roll your own. Oh come off it! A libretto owner complaining about not having a CD-ROM? Actually, my 70CT is too slow and I also want a portege, but I don't quite think that this is enough of an upgrade. I'm looking at the 3490 (700? mhz, 128-256 MB, 20 GB, 1024x768, integrated 56K LAN, 3.4? lbs, fast IRda, USB, $2400 direct from Toshiba). Does anyone have any experience with the Portege line (specifically the 3490)? Specifically, is a 3.something pound Portege still easy to toss into a backpack and not really notice it or does the bigger footprint make it a lot harder to bring along than the Libretto? The weight isn't much more, but the size certainly is... It's such a shame that the newest libby is so limited in processor and RAM. I can see that Toshiba is trying to make this a "niche item", but I use my 70CT day-in day-out as my only computer, and just can't see paying $2600 from dynamism for a 266 with 64 MB and a screen with 480 pixels vertically... even if it is the latest greatest libby (with a camera - whoop de do). Too bad they seem to have dropped the line completely... I suppose I'll keep my 70ct for what it's good at, and get something else to carry around and work on daily... Also, do any Toshiba's come with FireWire or are they not going along with that standard? I hate the Sony's but they have a machine similar to the Portege that I won't buy because it doesn't have IR and it has a touchpad instead of a pointer... but at least it has USB and FireWire. Given the choice, I NEED my IR, but I hate to buy a computer in 2001 that still doesn't support FireWire... Any opinions welcome... Thanks, David = [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Looks like the best Libretto replacements to date. Drawbacks are slightly larger footprint than the Libretto, Crusoe processor and weird screen sizes. The only other option in this size class is the Casio Fiva. There are some 'issues' with these machines too of course. Fiva has an 800 x 600 format screen and the Japanese model has 96MB ram available. Oh for a perfect world... They are indeed nice, but the specs on dynamism don't mention IR for either of them. With it being the only port on my 70CT I've gotten quite used to having it. IR sync with Palm, IR connection to mobile phone (still have to get it working), shooting files back and forth with other enlightened users via IR, etc. All with no cables. Nice. Can't see giving up IR on an "upgrade" machine, although these are VERY nice. As much as I like Linas Torvalds, I just can't get that excited about Crusoe. I'd be running Windows on the machine, so the 533 Crusoe performs like what, a 300 or so Pentium when it's emulating IAPX? Thanks for the quick response... I'll keep looking and hoping, and when I eventulaly can't take it anymore I'll buy the best thing I've found... David = [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I would be happy to check, but don't have the tools or knowledge. BTW, one sitaution where the libby will suspend even if disabled is if it overheats.. BTDT. I read your updated FAQ, there is mentioned, that the problem exists for L50's or L70's but not for L100's or 110's. This is agains my experience! Updating a L110 to the latest BIOS gives still the 8GB limitation. No problem for WinNT, Win2k or Linux, but also tools as Partition Magic can see only the first 8GB's. For hibernation a part of the disk is used where the BIOS thinks it is at the end of the disk. A good practice to partition a larger disk could be: - Create partition(s) with DOS or other partitioning tools in the area below 8GB. - Install an appropriate operating system - Leave 71MB free (for a L100 or L110 with 64MB) for hibernating. 71MB is neccessary because you have to add the video memory and round it up to the next cylinder. I dont know the value for 32MB memory. - Create partition(s) above 8GB with the installed operating system. A hibernation partition is always nacessary, there are occasions, where the BIOS puts the Lib into hibernation, even if it is disabled or handled by the operating system! (It is not total clear for me when and why, but it occured!) regards Gerhard ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... ** = [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do You Yahoo!? I did the following 1) created the max-size 8 GB default partition with boot floppy with Win98se on the libretto 2) used a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter (a really good one) to hook the drive to my toshiba M500D server (I found a local Boston computer store that sells these if someone needs a source) 3) used Partition Magic 4.0 (yeah it's old) to create another partition to use all available space (minus 100 MB) from the end of the disk 4) Slapped the drive back in the Libretto and formatted the second partition So far it has hibernated a few times and it hasn't killed the drive. The only thing I need now is an Adaptec 1460A slim scsi card since I gave away my Sony PRD-650 to my sister. Does anyone have a spare for cheap?
