my brain hurts [LIB]

Subject: my brain hurts [LIB]

I just booted my L110 from the FDD / Win'98 recovery diskette (Shift+F5),
from cold.

I just don't get it - how can C: and D: and E: see the whole 8GB, 1GB, and
20GB respectively??? No Win'2K, no fancy BIOS-enhancing software, absolutely
nothing...

I've been reading all the big HDD stuff for ages, and while I'd never claim
to be an expert, I thought I understood it well enough - well, better than I
apparently do.

I absolutely want to have all possible hardware hibernate and associated
issues 100% covered as I'm living out of a backpack in the hot hot
South-East Asia sun with both PCcard slots toasting away, and invoking my
(very crude) backup/recovery options usually involves three days on a bus
and a couple of passport stamps...

Sorry if I'm missing something really obvious here, but if someone could set
me straight, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in anticipation - especially for your patience.

I'm *guessing* here, but didn't you previously partition the
drive in the sizes you mention?

Indeed I did, Neil! - with Win'2K

If that's the case, I'd suspect that windows sees the
partition info and calculates sizes accordingly.
If the directory info is at the front of the disc, as it
would be if you've just rebuilt everything, then it will be
able to read that without problems and probably some, or
even all, of the files.

It might even be able to write new files,(95 wouldn't) but
I'd be very careful about using it without testing.

Sounds to me like you could be right on the mark there...

I've noticed FDISK report a FAT16 partition as FAT12, and likewise report
absolutely full partitions as 1% or simply % - both in the 8MB+ area

DIR works; I suspect that COPY has problems (I wasn't testing for that
specifically when I noticed something strange, so I can't be more
conclusive).

---

I've spent the entire day (and then some) on this and while my understanding
is far from complete, I am very confident that the bit I'm about to relate
is definitely correct.

I appreciate I'm re-inventing the wheel and verifying what was known all
along, so please don't read on beyond this point unless you're either very
bored or very skeptical ;-)

If you've got a single big partition on your Libretto (ie the BIOS
hibernate area around 8MB is unreserved) then ***YOUR DATA IS AT RISK***.

I've painstakingly verified this for myself (using somewhat crude techniques
and learning as I go), hands on at my own Libretto 110, and as far as I'm
concerned this is the absolute bottom line.

The problem will arise if/as/when your Libretto decides to hibernate without
intervention from Windows - for example, I've seen this happen when there
has been some problem booting; if your Libretto decides it's too hot; and so
on. Let's call it a spontaneous BIOS hibernation - it's something that can
still occur while running Win'2K, even though Win'2K itself has an
alternative hibernation policy.

You can't disable the spontaneous BIOS hibernation functionality, and it
will trash your data if you've got one partition spanning the sector in
question - despite the fact that everything worked OK for however long prior
to encountering the problem. Basically, you're sitting on a ticking bomb...

I made an initial partition as big as the Libretto could see (7.77GB -
8,348,737,536 bytes) and then experimented with other partitions following
on from that.

Basically you get 7MB increments; 70MB is definitely too small, and the next
one up - (78.2MB - 82,073,600 bytes) is the smallest available option that
will do the job (presuming 64MB memory).

I suspect the Libretto hibernates from the furthest point it can see and
writes backwards, towards the beginning of the drive, if that makes sense -
so if you don't reserve enough space, the area that get trashed is some way
into the following partition.

I've followed my 78.2MB partition with a small (7.81MB - 8,196,096 bytes -
smallest you can have / has to be FAT16) partition and filled it with .JPGs
so that there are zero bytes free.

Now, when I boot from cold straight to a DOS prompt and hibernate, the
78.2MB partition suffers heavy data loss, and everything in the 7.81MB
partition immediately after that is fine.

I've tested this, and similar variations, repeatedly - and yes, my brain
still hurts!

Actually (major speculation mode) it occurs to me that
as w98 only uses the bios at initialisation, that is
might be quite happy once things have booted.
Anyone got a big disk to experiment?

That would be me ;-)

OK, here's what I did:-

- Libretto 110, 4.3GB HDD, Win'98, no other software involved
- external HDD caddy with PCcard connection
- 30GB Fujitsu HDD - 3 partitions, all FDISK'd in L110 as follows:-
- 1 - 7.77GB FAT32 - FDISK'd from DOS with Win'98 boot diskette
- 2 - 78.2MB FAT32 - FDISK'd with Win'2K
- 3 - remainder (20+ GB) FAT32 - FDISK'd with Win'2K

7.77GB = 8,348,737,536 bytes
78.2MB = 82,073,600 bytes

The Libretto running Win'98 / Windows Explorer showed all three partitions
on the external HDD(!!!) straight away when the PCcard was inserted.

I copied 3GB of data (39,792 files, 2,888 folders) from the (internal) 4.3GB
HDD to the first (sub-8GB) partition on the (external) 30GB HDD - no
problems.

Then, on the external 30GB drive - still using Win'98 / Windows Explorer - I
copied the same 3GB of data from the first (sub-8GB) partition to the third
(last 20GB) partition - but this time a handful of files were rejected as
uncopyable - bad links / bad files names.

A short while after this was completed, while playing around and looking for
signs of anything being amiss, all three partitions of the external HDD
disappeared from Windows Explorer and could not be persuaded to return no
matter what. Trust me, I tried everything.

Finally I removed the 4.3GB HDD from the Libretto, replaced it with the 30GB
HDD and ran Win'2K - a check of the copied files threw up a further handful
of errors on the third (last 20GB) partition.

No problems were found with the external caddy setup when the 4.3GB HDD was
subsequently installed and plugged into the PCcard slot of the Win'2K
powered Libretto.

Howzat?

Umm ... this sorta surprises me a bit ... have you tried the same
trick (copying files around) when the HDD is in the libby?

Yes - no problems.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but this sounds more like a
problem with your PCMCIA drive caddy (perhaps a power problem?)
as opposed to a file system problem ... the communications
between your libby and the external drive controller getting
messed up somehow such that the libby thinks one thing and the
drive controller thinks another.

Well I guess anything is possible.

But as I said - I tried everything (removing and replacing each component;
installing the PCcard before booting, after booting; checking the status of
the PCcard and HDD drivers; etc etc etc) and none of the partitions on the
30GB HDD could be persuaded to come back.

The moment I swapped the drives over, ie put the 30GB HDD back in the
Libretto and the 4.3GB HDD in the caddy, everything (caddy and both drives)
worked perfectly (except of course for the file errors later found on the
over-8GB partition copied to using Win'98).

Hmm well if its just a jpg why not open it in photo editor and
rotate it??

I could use an image editing program, but 99% of all my photo-related tasks
are accomplished with shortcuts, directories, and Windows Explorer and I
really value the convenience of being able to right click on an image (file
name or thumbnail) and instantaneously rotate it 90/180/270 degrees.

IMHO loading an entire image editing program just to do this is a bit like
plugging in your desktop PC, switching it on, waiting for it to boot and
load Windows... just to see what the time is ;-)

A lot of system files are under Program Files folder.
It's not a good idea to rename it after installation.
You will lose a lot of functionalities.

I don't understand this - what functionality would be lost, and why?

---

There is TweakUI for 9x OS's which allows you you move/rename the
folder and will sort out the registry accordingly. I have used it
in the past to do the same thing with the My Documents folder.

I used TweakUI to good effect for the My Documents tweak on my previous
Win'98 setup, but it didn't offer me any Program Files options...
I think it will let you rename My Documents but not Program files.
Please let me know if I'm wrong.

Is there something similar for Win2000 ? I dont know, but Im sure that
there is a lot of OS tweaking software out there somewhere.

I've already downloaded TweakUI 1.31 (Win'98/...Win'2K - www.microsoft.com)
but not installed it yet.

So far: upgraded IE5 to IE6; installed SP2; Windows 2000 Security Rollup
Package (January 2002); and an IR driver update.

In Win'98 TweakUI wound up in the Program Files folder, so I was going to
leave it until after I'd made the Program Files folder naming decision...

---

Nortons system utilities should work shouldn’t it?

No idea... what does it do?
In any case, I don't have it - is it a must-have? Should I get it?

A lot of shared system components are located in this folder.
These components are usually registered in the registry.
Unless you have tools to fix all those registry locations that
point to this folder, you will have problems sooner or late.

Those are the (registry etc) changes the various web pages discuss.

Components like OE, IE, ODBC drivers and OLEDB drivers used by
various applications are located here. Usually you won't
notice any problem immediately. But eventually you'll.

This is the primary reason why Microsoft insists you to install
dual boot Windows OS in two different partitions because otherwise
components for different OSs will override each other in Program
Files folder. I learnt it hard way.

I'm trying to get a handle on the issues... but I've no experience with
dual-booting (then again I've no intention of having anything on this HDD
other than Win'2K).

Sounds like you had problems (ie that you learned the hard way from) - was
that from renaming Program Files, or dual-booting, or both?

Umm ... if you're only going to boot 1 OS then why do you need
to rename program files? Win2k doesn't need to be in the first
partition you know ... even if you remove whatever was there.

Well, I can't see the advantage in having a directory name with a space in
it - seems plain daft to me, and as there were occasions with Win'98 when
I'd wished it wasn't there, I figure now is the time to do something about
it. Another reason is...

 From: Michael Miller [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mine was to keep the OS separate from the applications, so I
created another Programs folder on a separate partition, into
which I install all the programs that give me a choice of where
to install. This would seem to address the issues you've
mentioned.

So Michael - you actually have two? ie you didn't move/rename the original
Program Files folder?

 From: David VanHorn [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That's what I do as well.
Windows, drivers, and system utils go in C, programs in D, and
data in E. That way, I only back up E, everything else is re-
installable, and the OS stuff is clearly delimited.
If I loose D, I'm still up and running.

Likewise David - you've still got the original Program Files folder, plus
another, or you've moved and/or renamed the original?

BIOS hibernate on big HDD [LIB]

2002-03-08 Thread Fubar Libretto

Date: Sat, 09 Mar 2002 03:44:57 +
From: Fubar Libretto [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: BIOS hibernate on big HDD [LIB]

Where did my hibernate go???
I just ran a test and didn't get the expected result!!!
Any suggestions? Here's what I did:-

I've FDISK'd my 30GB HDD to the maximum size possible in my Libretto L110 -
7.79GB (FAT 32)

Then I installed Win'2K, and added a second partition - 102MB (FAT 32)

And then a third partition for the remainder - 20.5GB (FAT 32)

I filled up the 102MB partition right to the brim with MP3's, then powered
down completely, powered up to a DOS prompt (ie *not* to Windows) and then
used the on/off switch to instigate a suspend-to-disk (hibernation).
So this is supposed to be a BIOS hibernate...
The hibernate animation appeared on screen accompanied by beeps, then the
Libretto powered down. I powered on again, and the un-hibernate animation
did its thing. So both hibernate and un-hibernate appeared to complete
perfectly, and there were no error messages.

Removed the battery and power supply (ie powered down without the on/off
switch).

Replaced the battery, connected power, and booted into Win'2K.

Now this is the bit I didn't expect - Computer Management / Disk Management
/ Error Checking is reporting no errors on the 102MB (or anywhere else for
that matter), and all the MP3's on the 102MB partition are 100% intact (I've
even played them all end to end...)

8-|

Am I missing something obvious???

Big HDD + Win'2k - BIOS, formatting, IDE adapter, etc [LIB]

2002-02-11 Thread Fubar Libretto

Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 12:51:29 +
From: Fubar Libretto [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Big HDD + Win'2k - BIOS, formatting, IDE adapter, etc [LIB]

At long last, I'm doing the deed - just picked up a new 30GB Fujitsu
MHN2300AT in Kuala Lumpur to replace the OE 4.3GB HDD in my L110CT :-)

My plan is:-
- duplicate data content of existing drive to Internet Cafe LAN drive
* update BIOS see Q2 below
- remove existing HDD from Libretto
- install new HDD in Libretto
* boot from Win'98 recovery floppy see Q3 below
* format entire bios-visible HDD (ie first 8.~GB) see Q3 below
- remove new drive from Libretto
* install new drive in Internet Cafe PC see Q4 below
- copy entire Win'2K CD to new HDD see Q5 below
- re-install new HDD in Libretto
- run Win'2K installation from the new HDD
- move copy of data content of old drive from LAN to new HDD

Then, having retreated from the Internet cafe, delve into Win'2K to reserve
the hibernation space at 8.~GB (starting from where the original in Libretto
format left off - IIRC 71MB for Win'2K / 64MB RAM?) and then configure the
HDD space over 8.~GB. I'm anticipating I'll eventually divide the sub 8.~
space into 3, and the over-8.~ space in two.

It's a standard L110CT with 64MB memory, everything will be English
language, and I'm hoping I'll have no problems as a result of my current
dependance on mains power (my hi-cap battery is dead; the CMOS battery is
AOK).

Q1 - FAQ

Has anyone written up a step-by-step guide to doing the Big HDD + Win'2K
thing?

Q2 - BIOS etc

What's the latest on L110CT BIOS - I've been off-list for a while and I'm
not up to date.
Some time ago I downloaded (but have not installed) a copy of 7100tv81.exe
(Ver:8.10 - Size:611,773 bytes - Posted:08/06/01 - Released:07/31/01)

I have to update the BIOS first, right?
You have to update the BIOS before install the Win2K so that
it will install as ACPI computer rather than standard computer.

And I'm right to take it that the BIOS is always backwards-compatible - ie I
can upgrade the BIOS and I'll still be able to boot from either drive
(4.3GB+Win'98 and 30GB+Win'2K respectively)?

What other stuff should I be downloading before I begin - does the Win'2K CD
suffice for the Libretto 110, or do I need to download Libretto-specific
Win'2K stuff from Toshiba?

Q3 - formatting

I have the OE Libretto FDD and a Win'98 'recovery' boot diskette with
COMMAND.COM, FDISK.EXE, etc on it - is that suitable for formatting the
first 8.~ GB of the new HDD?

It's got to be four or five years since I last did this - I vaguely recall
FORMAT C: /S (and FORMAT C: /U /S??? - but I can't remember what U does?)
- is that right?

And then FDISK? It's all a blur... ;-)

I've no previous Win'2K experience, and the file system issues are something
of a grey area to me right now. Anything I need to watch out for, especially
in respect of wanting this to become a Win'2K boot drive?

Q4 - IDE adapter

I've bought an adapter to plug the new HDD into a desktop.
The drive has a long block of pins, plus four more pins offset at one end.
The adapter matches up to the pins on the long block; the other four pins
are for power, right?

I recall it being mentioned at some point in the past that care was needed
to make sure the laptop HDD - adapter - IDE cable connection is made
correctly (not inverted?); indeed, the adapter I have will fit the new drive
either way up - can someone jog my memory on the method for getting this
right? Everything on the adapter is numbered, but not the pins on the HDD
(plus of course I won't get to see the internals of the Internet Cafe
machine prior to the moment of truth).

Q5 - Win'2K

I've seen it suggested that only the contents of the i386 directory need
copying across?
I've made a note to ensure I've got show all files enabled...
And to launch the Win'2K installation, I just run winnt.exe...?

Win'2K service packs - as per the BIOS question, I appreciate this info will
be available elsewhere if I go search for it - but if anyone already has the
necessary at their fingertips and can tell me what the score is, I'd really
appreciate it - cheers!

TIA!

Sincerely... Steve

From: "Fubar Libretto" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: other OS's

I don't see how they can run 'too fast' as long as the drive
behaves according to the EIDE interface specs, which it should
or else!
eg. if the Libretto runs at a 16MB/sec. EIDE interface speed,
then the HD will recognize that it can't go the UDMA 33/66/100
modes, and should simply run itself at the slower interface
speed w/o any problems.

If, however, for some reason those new HDs can't run at the
slower interface speed (ie. they took out backwards EIDE
compatibility), then I'd hide under a rock and buy an IBM
instead.

The IBM is actually 10 SPD cheaper here in Singapore (IBM: 550 SPD, Toshiba:
560 SPD) so that's the one I was going to get as it has a bigger buffer than
the Toshiba and everything else seems to be the same.

However, I'm looking at...
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/diskdrdl/travel/tr20gn.htm
...and UDMA is mentioned a lot whereas EIDE is not mentioned once, and
"Interface transfer rate (MB/sec)" is quoted as:-
- 66.6 Ultra-DMA mode 4
- 16.6 PIO mode

Does that mean it's not Libretto compatible?

Other quotes from the IBM page are:

The IBM Travelstar 20GN has the industry's highest shock
rating of 800 G/1 ms. as well as the fast Ultra-DMA
interface transfer rates reach as high as 66 MB/sec.

IBM Travelstar hard disk drive characteristics
Feature: Fast Ultra-DMA 66 2.5-inch mobile hard drives
Benefit: IBM Travelstar 32GH, 30GT, and 20GN all feature
high data transfer rates to help ensure the ultimate
 performance possible

In theory it should be possible.

One would need to build a couple of floppies including
a heavily patched kernel with the Clik! driver and the
Libretto Floppy driver. In fact this is a phenominally
good idea

At last! I always knew I'd have one sooner or later! ;-)

for a rescue disk set.

Unfortunately I don't have time today or tomorrow to
even start to attempt this.

Well, right now it sounds like it's beyond my capabilities; but if anyone
wants to chip in or point me in the right direction, it would be much
appreciated...

Is there no way you can find a fellow traveller with
a windows PC who will let you "use" his laptop under
supervision in return for a few beers?

"No have", as they say in these parts.
I've been shopping around in Kuala Lumpur today, looking for somewhere with
the capability to copy from a PC-card to a Zip disk, and can't even find
that...

Should it be possible to copy files between PC-card slots (one will
contain a 128Mb CF1 card in a PC-card slot adapter, the other will
contain an Iomega "Clik" (aka "Pocket Zip"?) drive... from a DOS
prompt (ie without Windows)?

Of course. Each device will be assigned a separate drive letter by
DOS, so there is no restriction.

So how do I get DOS to see these devices? I presume I need some software
(drivers?) that allow DOS to see the PC-card slots; either something
specific to PC-card slots, or specific to the devices in the slots (ie the
CF1 card and the Clik drive), or both?

I take it that Fubar, wants to use the "Click" with out loading Windows
either with dos enablers (no card services or with card services) but
not with windows drivers.

Something like that!

Think of it as a Libretto with no hard drive - I can boot it from a floppy,
and need to move the images I've taken with my digital camera to some other
media (the Clik is ideal because it's cheap, available where I am, and will
still be useful after I've resolved my hard drive / hard drive controller
problem)

What's the difference between no card services / with card services?

If you look at Iomega site you can find drivers for windows,
but those will not work for dos, and you can find dos drivers for the Jaz
and Zip, but I do not see any drivers for the 250 zip usb or for the click.

I see...

I just tried http://www.iomega.com/software/drivers.html
and selected "Clik! PC Card Drive" and "Windows 3.1/DOS" and get the message
"Sorry, no software is available for this selection" :-(

I've also tried a couple of search engines, just on the off-chance, but
drawn a blank...

So yes if you can get it recognized it would be no problem copying between
them. I think the real question that you need answer is will dos recognize
the click. Perhaps even without Iomega drivers you can get Card and Sockets
service to work with it, as a simple hard drive. Perhaps it would be best
to
check with your DOS card and Sockets service provider and see if they have
a
driver for it.

Who might my DOS card and Sockets provider be? What are the alternatives?

LINUX boot+copy files between PC-card slots

Subject: LINUX boot+copy files between PC-card slots

Re my 'quest' to copy files between PC-card slots, from a CF1 flash memory
card (in a PC-card adapter) to an Iomega 'Clik' disk...

I just found the following Clik/Linux page:

http://paulbristow.net/linux/clik.html
which even includes a paragraph:

 Toshiba Libretto 100/110 CT
The drive only works in slot 0, the bottom PCMCIA slot.
I guess this is something to do with the Cardbus stuff in slot 1.

Kinda looks promising, though I have no Linux experience whatsoever so right
now it's all way over my head.

So, before pursuing this further, my question is - can anyone advise the
feasability of booting Linux from a floppy, and then being able to copy
between PC-cards... obviously I can use more than one floppy disk (I could
even use another CF card or Clik drive, if it would help), but I *can't* use
the built-in Libretto hard drive...

Subject: Re: Boot+run Win2K from PC-card drive?

Suppose I get a friend in the west to procure a Toshiba
MK2001MPL 2Gb PC-card drive, copy the contents of a Win2K
CD onto it, and ship it to me - could I boot from my
recovery diskette, do a Win2K installation from the files
on the PC-card drive, and thereafter persuade the
Libretto to boot from the PC-card drive

Very unlikely. The Libretto expects a floppy on the PC
card. How could you tell it otherwise?

Thanks, Pres; that makes sense...
Could I boot from the recovery diskette, do the Win2K install (to the
PC-card, from the files on the PC-card), and thereafter boot from a floppy
and *then* run Win2K from the PC-card drive? I presume I'd need to create a
floppy which will allow the Libretto to boot and see the PC-card drive from
an A: prompt?

OTOH why do you want a Libretto with a non-functioning
drive?

It's a temporary fix - I figure I can use the PC-card as my portable data
back-up device in the future.

Have your friend get a replacement drive, f-disk it in a
Libretto to get the hibernation partition, format and sys:
it to make it bootable, and copy the contents of the WIN2k
into c:\disks\win2k
Alternatively if you can't get a Libretto to f-disk it in,
reserve at the end enough for hibernation. David Chein can
advise on this.

I can organise the latter, but am reluctant as it's still under warranty and
I'll invalidate the warranty when I break the seals, which will be bad news
if it turns out that the problem is not with the HD, but with the controller
(I'm presuming the controller is on the motherboard?)

If the drive works in the Libretto you can install the
drive and the OS.

If I do attempt this, I guess the new 20Gb IBM drive is the one to go for -
has anyone reading this actually done this upgrade on a 110?

How do I physically get to the HD? Is is via the keyboard (ie from the top),
or by removing the bottom half of the case (ie from underneath)?

If the HDD controller is fried, sell it for the value of
the display.

Hoping I can avoid that one way or another - it's only a few months old!
Problem is, I bought it in Hong Kong and it looks like I'd have to return
there to get it sorted.

Can anyone think of any way of determining where the problem is - the drive,
or the controller - without breaking the seals?

Subject: Re: Lib.HD problem - FDISK=no fixed disks present

Hello Galliform Sapients, Chickens, and anyone else who is reading

It looks awfully as if the bios is seeing *nothing* where a disk
ought to be...I know this is a long shot, but if you wake up the
bios (lots of escs as the machine is booting usually does the
trick) does it actually show anything in hard drive section?

TVM Neil - I'll check ASAP - later today.

I have noticed however that when it boots, the "Toshiba - in touch with
tomorrow" splash screen displays for several seconds (ie much longer than it
used to prior to this problem) before it asks for the (bios?) password. The
HDC error message appears after the password is accepted (regardless of the
the floppy drive being in place or not). Don't know if there any clues in
that.

One possibility: I've had a hard drive fail because one of the
pins got pushed back into the connector and so was only making
intermittent contact. It's worth a try!

I've never been inside the machine... but I guess it's possible it was
assembled incorrectly at the factory (was that the case with yours, Neil?)

Can anyone point me at any information which will explain what is involved
in physically getting at the hard drive? I'll have to go shopping for
implements as I think my toolkit here (a swiss army penknife and a
mini-maglite) may prove somewhat inedequate.

TIA

Lib.HD problem - Win'98 FAT/FAT32 u/s

Subject: Lib.HD problem - Win'98 FAT/FAT32 u/s

Hello All

Assistance appreciated with my Libretto problem...! It's a Libretto 110 -
purchased in Hong Kong earlier this year, presumed identical to the USA
model (has American keyboard layout). Original English language Windows '98
installation.

Problem:-

Win'98 error message reported a disk write error; mouse and keyboard
(including caps.lock and num.lock) frozen. After a long wait, I switched it
off with the power switch on the screen.

When re-booted, after the BIOS password is accepted, I see "HDC error" on
the screen and a boot disk is requested.

Re-booting with the floppy drive and recovery diskette in place, the Win'98
startup menu appears and reports that Win'98 has detected that drive C does
not contain a valid FAT or FAT32 partition.

Are there any recovery tools for this kind of disaster? Is the factory
Win'98 installation FAT32?

I'm currently "stuck" on a beach on a small Thai island, so any and all
thoughts and suggestions would be very welcome - Thanks In Anticipation!

Sincerely... Steve

Hi Neil

Thanks for your suggestions - very much appreciated.

o FAT table somehow garbaged - e.g. chernobyl (CIH) virus - in
which case you can probably use Steve's stuff to recover it

I'm guessing that's not too likely, as it went down after a lengthy period
of use on a day (not the 26th) when I didn't have e-mail/internet access. I
don't think the machine has ever been exposed to a floppy disk other than
four I bought with the machine, and I'm very vigilant with e-mail (I never
open attachments) etc.

o Partition table trashed...fdisk /mbr from a windows recovery disk might
spring it back to life.

What does fdisk /mbr do? Rebuild the FAT table by scanning the data on the
disk?

The last is the most likely I guess, but read through Steve's pages before
you do *anything* to it...

Checking it out now - thanks again!

BTW another 'thought' is that the problem (disk write error) was caused by
the climate here -hot and humid - producing condensation - don't know if
that's possible (I know hard drives have an airtight seal - do they have a
partial vacuum too?)

Re: Lib.HD problem - Win'98 FAT/FAT32 u/s

2000-08-21 Thread Fubar Libretto

Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 10:04:19 GMT
From: "Fubar Libretto" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: Lib.HD problem - Win'98 FAT/FAT32 u/s

Hi Ben

Thanks for your comments!

What does fdisk /mbr do? Rebuild the FAT table by scanning the data on the
disk?

As far as I know the partition table and the 'Master Boot Record' are not
the same thing. The mbr is the sector on every bootable
storage device that contains the instructions needed to start the
boot-secence for the operating system used. It can be redirected
by viruses and boot-managers and can become corrupted.
FDISK/mbr writes a fresh copy of this Master Boot Record to the HD.
I have never experienced problems myself when executing a
FDISK/mbr when I experienced problems. In my experience it is a fairly safe
thing to try.

Do you think my symptoms:-
- disk write error, system hung
- switched off with the power switch
- re-boot
- "HDC error" message
- Win'98 rescue diskette reports "drice C does not contain a valid FAT or
FAT32 partition"

... could indicate an MBR problem? Sounds like the MBR is not normally
written to during normal operation; if it is an MBR problem, does that mean
it was overwritten in error at the time when the disk write error occurred?
I'm wondering about non-bootable drives - presumably a valid partition does
not always have an MBR - and if a corrupt MBR would mean the partition was
reported as not being valid... and if the Win'98 rescue disk report
different error messages in the event of corruption of the MBR and/or FAT
table...

Unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess!) I have no previous experience in
this area so I'm keen to understand the possibilities better before
proceeding... I'm surfing around for answers but not finding anything
conclusive and my resources here are - well - very limited!

Make sure though that the floppy you boot and execute it from was
made with the same operating system as on the HD.

No problem - I have the 'rescue' floppy created when I bought the Libretto.

Thanks again for your help!

Sincerely... Steve
