AW: [LIB] Libretto solar powered?
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2006 11:35:01 +0200 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: [LIB] Libretto solar powered? Hi David! Thanks for the links. My current favorite is http://www.powerfilmsolar.com/products/military/foldables/index.htm, which will be available in Europe soon. In the meanwhile I made some measurements, how a Lib110 behaves under varying power conditions. To test this I used an adjustable power supply. A combined network/modem card was inserted and active during the tests. - A Lib100 needs 440 - 560mA for charging only, 330 - 780mA for operation and 550 - 1200mA for operation and charging. - Operation (without inserted battery) is possible down to 12,1V. - Reliable charging is only possible down to 14,6V. Below this voltage the battery is not properly charged and the current decreases. That means the Lib runs partly on AC and partly on battery. This state is not visible on the charging led or in the power management utilities! Power management shows operation on AC, but battery loading percentage decreases! Conclusion: - The spec for the standard power adapter is 15V/2A. This is little bit oversized, 15V/1A would be sufficient for a Lib only. Perhaps with the big docking station and more PCMCIA-Cards 2A can be reached. - For a reliable operation the input voltage must be stabilized to 15V, one can not expect, that on lower voltage the battery still will be loaded and only the loading time increases! - It would be possible to connect a Lib directly to 12V in a car, but it makes no sense, the Lib would run but the battery would be emptyed! And there is a risk aof damaging the Lib because of voltage peaks which occur in a car. Now the next steps are to research the specs for solar panels (voltage/current/light-diagrams) and to search for a 15V stabilizer which operates lower input-voltage. Perhaps it is worth to look to the original 12V-Adapter. - My first idea was to avoid this extra piece... :-(( regards Gerhard _ Gerhard Kapusta Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4912120-201115
[LIB] Libretto solar powered?
Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2006 07:49:47 +0200 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Libretto solar powered? Hi! I've planned a journey to an area without electricity, where I would like to use my Libretto for storing digital pictures and for diary. Does anybody of the listfolk have experience how to operate a Libretto with solar power? I've already found rollable and foldable panels on the market, but the main questions are: - Nominal input for the Lib is 15V, which fits to the output voltage of standard panels (under good light conditions). But what happens if the panel voltage is reduced because of clouds etc? Does charging continue with lower current? Or does charging stop? - 2nd importent question is the right size of the panel. The standard power adaptor is designed for 30W/2A which is quite huge for a panel which should fit into a backpack... - A smaller problem is to find a source for a power plug - maybe somebody has a damaged power adaptor to sell, where I could cut off the cable with the plug! Are there any hints avilable? regards Gerhard _ Gerhard Kapusta Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4912120-201115
AW: [LIB] Rebuilding a battery pack

Although it was a success and I have a working battery now, I wouldn't repeat it! According to my experiences it is impossible to open a battery pack without visible scratches or cracks. I also tried to take 2 dead packs, where I cutted off upper part on one and the lower part on the other - to work out the other half unbroken. This gave better results, but is also not perfect. The packs are designed and glued in a way that it makes impossible to separate the two halves without signes! The other thing are the welded contacts. Without a special welding equipement (which I do not have) the only way is to solder the contacts with wires. I tried to use thin (but not too thin!) wires, I grinded it flat, but the batterys need still 1 mm more space inside - and this space is not available. I tried to grind away some plastic, but there is not much So on the left and right side the renewed pack is still a litle bit bulgy. I don't know the english expression for this, but in german we say it's a Pfusch regards Gerhard _ Gerhard Kapusta FaxVoicebox: +4989-1488201115

They are only DOS with some nice grapics, unstable and unusable as a tool. Yes, a Lib 100 is a bit weak for Win2000, but mine runs fine with WinNT! Every driver, power management, hot swap of cards etc. is available and works. Rocksolid and without a reboot for months! Disks 8GB are usable without fumbling around with tricky drivers, all you need is a gap at the right place while partitioning. The only exception is USB, as far as I know there is no USB with WinNT possible. Gerhard _ Gerhard Kapusta Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4989-1488201115

There is a way to suspend a Lib100/110 running Win2000 when closing the lid, it is an option in the power management control panel. On my Lib with Win2000 it works perfect! Note: Win2000 does handle all power management activity internal, not via BIOS, as Win9x does! Size 1200 is relatively big from outside, but it is the smallest size where a Lib fits in. It has cutable foam inside, I cutted the foam into a 2-layer object, at the bottom the AC-adapter and cables, at the top the Libretto itself. Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 11:03:52 +0200 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Libretto 110, 8gb barrier Hi Carval, hi Raymond! I would not suggest to use a disk manager like EZ-Bios or similar things. Why dou you not use WinNT or Win2000? Both are reliable and stable, all Libretto-specific facilities (suspend+hibernation, hot PCMCIA-swap, hot dock, power management...) will work. I run WinNT on a Lib 100 and Win2000 on a Lib 110. The Lib110 with Win2000 is a bit slower than the Lib100 with WinNT, but it is more comfortable and more modern. Disk size is not a question, all 9.5mm will work without any disk manager or other obscure tricks. Here again a quick summary how to install a big HD into a Lib with WinNT or Win2000: - Make sure to have flashed the latest BIOS - Boot DOS and create one or more partitions (you will see only 8GB) - Install WinNT or Win2000 into one of the created partitions - Use WinNT or Win2000 to create one or more partitions above 8GB, but make sure to leave 71MB free after the partitions created from DOS - that's it! C with 2GB for Win89 is ok, but D with 2GB for Win2000 is not very much, if you plan to install some additional software! Consider also which filesystem you want to use: NTFS is the standard for Win2000, but you can't access it from Win98. FAT32 can be used both by Win98 and Win2000 but is is not so reliable as NTFS and has less features. In any case you will not see the partitions above 8GB from Win98. (- so why additionally Win98???, it brings again a dirty system!) You cannot avoid or switch off hibernation. There are situations, independent from the operating system, where the Libretto wants to hibernate, controlled by the BIOS (e.g. overheat, battery empty, hibernate from DOS booted from a floppy, and I'm sure there are some ohers). So it is strongly recommended to leave the neccessary space free, otherwise you risk a data loss! Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 14:42:23 +0200 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Libretto 110, 8gb barrier Hi Carval! So, will the hibernation install it self automaticly at the end of what the HD see?? There is no install of hibernation. If you access the HD via BIOS (e.g. from DOS, Win9x) you will see a disk which is approx. 70MB smaller than the real size (if the disk is = 8GB). This hidden space (located at the end of the disk) is used by BIOS to store the content of the memory if hibernation is triggered. You cannot see the space above 8GB. If you access the HD without BIOS (what WinNT, Win2000 and Linux does) than you can see the complete disk and you have to take care yourself that you do not use the hibernation area. Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 15:57:34 +0200 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Libretto 110, 8gb barrier Hi Raymond! OK and how will you boot to this second installation if, say, your boot record is damaged? Or if you need to perform a drive image without another computer to put the hard drive in? The way you put it, it seems like the second installation is a Win2k or NT installation Yes. (as if it were a 9x installation you'll need a drive overlay) so if you get a virus that targets WinNT/2k system files, how will you clean it? Either way you slice it, if you're going to do ANY recovery that involves more than copying from an existing, intact file system, you'll need to have some way of seeing the whole drive. And the only way of doing that without NT/2k (which you won't have in a recovery situation) is using a drive overlay. Since years I never had the situation, that the boot record was damaged. But if that would happen, I simply install WinNT or Win2000 fresh over the second installation. The work installation is not touched by this procedure, it will be useable later by editing boot.ini. If either the second or the work installation is corrupt for any reason, I simply restore a backup by copying complete partitions with the other intstallation. (All my computers are connected via LAN) I use only WinNT/Win2000, also for recovery and backup, up to now I had no need for other operating systems (Ok, this is not fully true, sometimes I use DOS-floppys with some hardware-tools or to flash a BIOS etc.). Of course it is a bit slower than W98, but try to avoid to run unnecessary programs in the background and do not install a lot of programs into the right corner of the systray - this can save some memory space. Just wondering if there Is support for the IR port of the 110 on windows 2000 and or XP. I don't know about XP. Initially Mirosoft tried to introduce a new IR-protocol with Win2000 and all mobile phone users should throw away their phones... But there are still no Win2000-IR-compatible mobile phones on the market. Then third party vendors created Win2000 drivers for IR (e.g. Extended Systems). Now Microsoft has created a Hot Fix which introduced standard behaviour for IR within Win2000, it will be in cluded in the coming SP3. Are there any driver problens when installing XP/2k like floppy sound or video? I don't know about XP (can't imagine that this make sense on a Lib!) but there are no driver problems for Win2000. Even with 2k/xp should I still use CPUidle/CpuIdle Pro, and is there a better program? (I'm specially interested in longer battery times) I have tried CPUidle and similar programs, my recommendation is: absolute unneccessary if you use WinNT or Win2000. As a UK based L110 owner with win2k installed both the thermal overheat and lid suspend / hibernate options are controlled by win2k and not the BIOS... I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe win2k (SP2) should handle all events that cause suspend / hibernate. Win2k cannot handle all hibernation events. It handles the lid-close event, the battery low event and perhaps some others, but there are events which are not handled by Win2k, e.g transition from suspend to hibernate because of low battery. I have not forced the overheat event, but since there is a temperature gauge displayed within Win2k, it could handle this! Consider also the following situation: You boot DOS from a floppy and you close the lid - it hibernates and the data around 8GB is gone! AW: [LIB] Hot plugging hard drives (OT)
Date: Tue, 22 Jan 2002 14:57:47 +0100 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: [LIB] Hot plugging hard drives (OT) Hi! I have a similar thought: why ins't it possible to hot plug IDE-drives in desktop computers? I own a (non-Libretto) notebook, where ist is possible to hot plug the IDE-CD-ROM. There are also HD's for this bay available, where I assume that tey are also hot plugable. Can this be done also on desktops with changeable IDE-frames? Is additional software or hardware neccessary? The correct way to disable IDE-devices on Win2k-notebooks is to disable the device with a small icon in the system tray, ist is the same mechanism which is used to disable PCMCIA-cards before removing it. But how can I bring my desktop to display this icon in the tray? Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2002 08:53:18 +0100 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: [LIB] Experiences... Hi Lee! How did you manage Lib battery recharging and/or powering the Libretto on your backpack trip? Most nights I spent in hostels or other cheap accommodations, where I could charge it. But sometimes I had no electricity for 2 or 3 days. Beside the picture tranfer I wrote only some quick notes for my diary in this days. This gave me a lifetime up to 6 days with the high capacity battery. More power was needed for the camera: I had only two sets of batteries, they last for a maximum of 3 days. regards Gerhard Gerhard Kapusta Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4989-1488201115 ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. [LIB] Experiences...
Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2002 13:38:59 +0100 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Experiences... Hi! A few days ago I returned from a 2-month backpack-trip to Mexico and Guatemala. In my luggage was a digital camera and a Libretto 100. It war really a perfect combination! I could not imagine much other possibilities to transport the 5000 pictures I have taken during the trip! Low temperatures in the dessert, high humidty in the jungle, the Lib worked on all conditions well. On the Lib I had installed Win NT 4.0, all the Toshiba stuff and CardWizard to allow hot swap of the memory cards for the camera. There was not one crash, not one reboot during the whole trip! Thousands of kilometers the Lib was transported by plane, bus, boat and even by donkeys without problems. But then there was ond bad accident: I struggled and felt down, my backpack crashed hard to the concrete floor. Even the Lib was in a bag inside, the case was heavily damaged. On the first view I saw only a small crack on the case but inspecting the Lib closer showed that the upper part with the display has moved 2 mm and the inner chassis is bent, so that the Lib can't stand on a flat surface. 8-((( But fortunately it ist only a mechanical damage, it continued to work! Of course I'm looking now for possibilities to repair the Lib, to have it ready for the next trip! What I learned from this: I need a hard case for the Lib (+ AC-Adapter + Cables + Charger for the Camera) which must be upholstered and strong enough to withstand a free fall from at least 1m! regards Gerhard Gerhard Kapusta Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4989-1488201115 ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. [LIB] dead Libretto wanted!
Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2002 14:00:12 +0100 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: dead Libretto wanted! Hi! As I wrote in my last posting, I had an accident with my Lib 100, where it was mecanically damaged, but the electronics is ok. So I'm looking for a dead Lib 100 or 110, which should be mechanical intact. The electronic condition and accessoires are not relevant. AW: Windows NT 4.0
Date: Wed, 3 Oct 2001 08:26:16 +0200 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: AW: Windows NT 4.0 Hi Robert! I am afraid I don't have an answer for your question, only another question ! I inherited a Lib 100 with NT already (kind of) installed and with no manuals. The one thing I would really like to do is to get it to hibernate. Do you have any tips on what I could try to make hibernation work ? You have to install APM for Windows NT, it is downloadable from Toshiba. It introduces 2 small icons on the right end of the taskbar: a power source symbol and the famous hairy light bulb - in NT-Version! Now you have the possibility to adjust all the power options: display brightness and timeout, HDD timeout, processor speed and some more. There ist also a new entry if you press the Start-button: Suspend. Selecting this entry puts the Lib into suspend or hibernating, depending on the selection made at the hairy light bulb menu. Now we are very close to my question: moving the cursor above the power source symbol shows the remaining percentage, but not the remaining time. Probably it is not implemented. But maybe there is a trick to use anoter APM-module from Toshiba to show the remaining time... regards Gerhard BTW, I have to repeat it here again: I'm proud to say that I have never used (and hopefully will never use) an OS starting with number nine...8-)) Gerhard Kapusta Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4989-1488201115 ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---TO UNSUBSCRIBE--- Reply to any of the list messages. Good News: Networking under DOS for installation purpose
Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2001 09:25:43 +0200 From: Gerhard Kapusta [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Good News: Networking under DOS for installation purpose Hi! Many of us know the problem: A Lib without CD is not so easy to install. 2 Methods to install a Lib without CD are well known: - Prepare the disk in another PC, make it bootable or use floppys to boot and install the OS from the disk. - Use a serial cable to another PC, DOS has the capabilities to map a remote disk to the other computer. Both have big disadvantages: Many users don't like to open the Lib and the serial connection needs hours to transfer an installation CD. There is a third method to copy an installation CD to a Lib: A bootable floppy with can connect to an existing network. Now I found some (nearly) ready floppys which do the job. See http://www.bovistech.com/tcpip.htm. I used http://www.bovistech.com/disks/tcpip/multiboot.zip, but it was necessary to do some minor changes. The disk war not directly useable, because there is a mechanical problem: On my Lib's 100 and 110 there are 2 PCMCIA-Slots but I use a 3com-Xjack-Card which makes it impossible to insert at the same time the floppy-card. So I installed DOS, then copied the floppy to the disk and used it from there. Some edits to remove references to A: were necessary. But then it worked! I also tried to insert the Lib into the enhanced port replicator, to have additional PCMCIA slots, but I could not find any valid interrupt and I/O adress to use the network card without card services. regards Gerhard Gerhard Kapusta Email home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] FaxVoicebox: +4989-1488201115 ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
