I've no idea how it works, though. I think I can test it later I've just remembered that I have a virtualbox file with Windows inside I confirm that LilyPad is localized: let me know if you need screenshots for italian website.. Two issues to fix IMO: 1. Welcome_to_Lilypond should be translated 2. The installation wizard was in english, even if my locale in Windows is italian Generate PDF and Edit source (right-click menu) are not translated. verification and bulk edit [Re: Unverified issues?]
2013/9/29 Eluze elu...@gmail.com Traditionally Eluze works through these on a Monday. Let's check the situation on Tuesday. Ah, ok. I will treat what's left tomorrow (I'm not the only bug squad member allowed to do it!) I've cleared some of them, you won't have to work too much tomorrow :-) This is a boring task and it should be shared as possible between all bug squad members. Also, I'm thinking about a way of making it easier. Most of the times we have only to check if the committish pasted by the developer is really in master. If we add a field Committish (where the developer should paste the committish), then the bug squad can show the column Committish and work on the list page instead of having to open each issue. Then we copypaste each committish in gitk and when we have verified all of them we can use the bulk edit to mark all the issues as Verified in one shot (never tried but I hope it works). What do you think about it? ___ lilypond-devel mailing list lilypond-devel@gnu.org https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-devel
Re: verification and bulk edit [Re: Unverified issues?]
2013/9/29 David Kastrup d...@gnu.org It matches the theory. In practice, I've been startled quite a few times when bug squad members not just verified the commit to be present but also reported back when it turned out that the claimed functionality did not actually accompany the commit. The verification you spell out here could be done by a web crawler and would be done in seconds. The verification from the bug squad appears to do a more thorough job on average. This makes sense for issues marked as defects.. Well, some of them: for example, issue 3553 doesn't have a minimal example (I guess it cannot be produced) and I have no idea about how to verify it in depth. In such cases I'll follow the CG: Quite a few of these will be issues tracking patches. You do not have to prove these patches work - simply that they have been pushed into the code base. BTW, what are tracking patches? On the other hand, all the doc issues don't require other than checking that the committish is in master. When changing the issue tracker, you get a field for specifying what the tracker should do next after changing the current issue. If you use go to next issue, it will move to the next issue matching the search. That seems rather efficient, and it would appear that the bug squad reading the issue description and possibly more leads to an improvement of the results. The question is whether we can significantly improve the efficiency without sacrificing more quality than desirable. Because of the release delay, the issues to verify for 2.17.27 were way over the average, which is around 15 issues per release AFAICS. So probably my proposal is not needed. I'm curious to hear the opinion of Eluze ___ lilypond-devel mailing list lilypond-devel@gnu.org https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-devel

I see there's no critical issue in the tracker. I remember that you used to publish release candidates of next stable when we have no critical issues. Re: we now have lilypond organization on GitHub
2013/9/18 David Kastrup d...@gnu.org Translation workflows don't use our review system or issue trackers. And I don't even think they would benefit from it. If we take a look at the few reasonably tightly tracked translations (French and Spanish, I think), I very much doubt that you'd improve the quality of the work of the respective translators by forcing a web frontend on them. And I doubt that a crowd-sourced German (say) translation would lead to a consistent quality _unless_ several people get fully immersed into it and again work at a level of thoroughness where web/crowdsourced interfaces get more in the way than anything else. Program documentation is not a Wikipedia-like task. LilyPond documentation is so huge that sometimes I wish that more people could be involved. On the other hand, keeping the documentation consistent in the use of words is harder when several persons are working on it. I think that I like working in a team of two persons, even if this means that translation is proceeding slowly. Anyway, I don't know if a web interface would help much (at least for italian translation, as I don't see many users). The problem is translating.. and the quantity of lines to be translated: this is what may scare away potential contributors. I think also that the average LilyPond user can deal fairly well with unfriendly interfaces :-) For example, I recently asked the reviewer of my translation to use git[1] to send his corrections to me. He did it right since the beginning, even if he had no experience in commits and patches. [1] right after receiving 50 .diff files for each file in his previous review :) ___ lilypond-devel mailing list lilypond-devel@gnu.org https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-devel

Re: Suggestion: spacing for swing music?
2013/7/13 Steve Burgondy steve.burgo...@gmail.com Hello, Proportional spacing can be of great help to understand music and to associate visual space to time space. It can be useful for beginners, but also in general. It is very important in tablatures, especially when full tab notation is not used. Currently in Lilypond, if we want to have an accurate visual space representation in the specific case of swing music, it is required to enter music in 12/8 mode (this implies dotted notes and so on). Has anyone thought of implementing swing spacing with a 4/4 mode notation? Would this be hard to achieve? Hi Steve AFAICS nobody replied to your questions. I'm not a developer so I cannot say if this can be achieved or not (but I have a feeling that it's not easy for sure). I'm putting the bug-lilypond list in CC. Re: the future of LilyPond blog
2013/6/3 Janek Warchoł janek.lilyp...@gmail.com Hi, in general: good points, but i have valid arguments as well ;) 2013/6/3 Jan Nieuwenhuizen jann...@gnu.org: Janek Warchoł writes: because i have 0 experience with blogging and webhosting and i didn't want to spend a lot of time setting things up :) What I also mean is, is it wise to have yet another site/platform? What is wordpress.com doing for us, that cannot be done just as well (or better?) on G+ -- http://google.com/+lilypond [...] 2) We won't have complete control over the content (that's why i want to move the blog to our website eventually). I think that we should be as independent as possible. As far as i know, Wordpress is open source so we can take it with us, there shouldn't be (m)any proprietary software dependencies. Another option could be Mezzanine, a CMS based on Django which has many built-in features (including blogging). Considering that many lilypond developers know python, it could be a wise choice in case we need to hack on it. Mezzanine has some scripts to import from other CMS (Wordpress included): http://mezzanine.jupo.org/docs/blog-importing.html The initiative is great ...but we now have groups on FB and G+ and all kinds of alternative/language fora all over the place. I agree that it's bad to spread all over the internet too much. However, from what i see on G+ it's growing to become more something like a mailing list: people post links to LilyPond-related articles (i.e. Liedboek announcement), ask about LilyPond. It seems to me to be more like a news aggregator - it collects content from other places. I don't imagine anyone posting an article like this http://news.lilynet.net/?The-LilyPond-Report-26#lilypond_output_analysis on G+ - it seems too long (maybe my gut feeling is wrong, though), while it's acceptable for a blog post. Yes, I agree with you. The blog you are setting up is something totally different and you are missing an important gap. This may actually need to be stated more clearly: i want this blog to become a source of information, not just a news feed. Something that people read even 5 years after it was posted, because it gives them valuable knowledge. can I suggest putting keywords in the titles of posts? I think that it would improve the search: for example wikipond is funny but lilypond-scores-in-wikipedia work better also, there should be some SEO plugin for Wordpress I apologize that i didn't ask for opinions first, but i have an impression that we (LilyPond community) sometimes go on and talk forever and not have anything done. Re: opening bar check crashes the compiler
Il 25/02/2013 03:33, Steve Yegge ha scritto: Hi Thomas, thanks for the reply. I think there are two issues at play here. One issue is that user input should never crash the program. It took nontrivial effort to track down why my scores were crashing after upgrading Lilypond (since in some distant past version, it didn't crash.) Even if the input is invalid, a compiler error with line number information is greatly preferable to seeing bus error with no diagnostics. The second issue is that disallowing bar checks at the beginning of a section hampers composability. It turns out that my bar check is, in fact, positioned at a place where a bar line is expected. Here is a slightly larger input file that demonstrates the problem: \version 2.16.0 introRest = { \set Score.skipBars = ##t R2.*11 \unset Score.skipBars } orch = { \key g \minor \time 3/4 \tempo Andante 4 = 84 \override TupletBracket #'stencil = ##f \introRest } intro = \relative c { | r4 r d } music = { \intro } \score { \new Staff { \orch \music } } \score { \unfoldRepeats \music \midi { \context { \Score } \context { \Voice \remove Dynamic_performer } } } My bar check that's crashing the program is not at the beginning of the music. It does fall on a bar line, which is consistent with the docs. The problem is in the \midi block, which in your example indeed starts with a bar check. It improves composability of sections -- copying them, commenting them out, moving them around -- if you don't have to special-case bar checks happening at the beginning of a section. If we agree that this is a bug then I'll go ahead and report it. no need to report it on bug-lilypond, I've already added the issue here: http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=3205 you can add any comment there thanks for the report -- Federico ___ lilypond-devel mailing list lilypond-devel@gnu.org https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-devel

Re: [translations] Re: How to extract PDF of translated documentation?
2013/1/14 David Kastrup d...@gnu.org The only translations that appear to be thoroughly maintained are the Spanish and French translation, with the German translation following close behind. Well, the italian translation is far to be completed but it _is_ maintained. It would a lamentable state of affairs if we had translations that are not maintained because of a lack of translators and manpower. But this and some other mailings on the translator list rather suggest to me that we _might_ have manpower and persons feeling responsible, but that the information what they could be doing for the project does not even arrive at their doorstep. And that would not be lamentable, but stupid. If we have people enlisted and willing to do a job, we should not let their availability go to waste. Are there people willing to do translations, particularly those who actually _are_ already subscribed to the translator list, that are waiting for instructions or whatever else before they know how to get to work on making their language better supported with LilyPond? If so, we need to organize this effort better and more transparently. Probably the CG should be updated, improved and simplified. I think that at the moment it would be a bit hard for a new translator to get in. ___ lilypond-devel mailing list lilypond-devel@gnu.org https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/lilypond-devel

Il 14/01/2013 20:32, David Kastrup ha scritto: Redundancy of contributors, or redundancy in CG to make things much easier to find? Redundancy of contributions. We currently have one person does the translation once and nobody including himself looks at it ever after. I've had a look here: http://lilypond.org/translated.html and it seems that this is true for any language except french and italian. As you aptly observed, that's the best you yourself can barely manage for Spanish. But I can't believe you to be the only LilyPond user natively speaking Spanish. The main qualification we should be requiring from translators and translation revisors is good command of language. Not ability to juggle with git and other technical stuff. My proofreader, Luca, is a huge help for the quality of italian words and also the choice of musical terms (he studied music, while I'm just self-taught and very ignorant in notation theory). He's scared away by the technical stuff (which I'm happy to handle) and I remember that he offered to help me provided that he didn't have to learn git, texinfo and the build system. So technical stuff can be handled by just one person per language. Editing the italian words of a text file, ignoring any strange texinfo command, and producing a diff file, is not an hard task... especially for a LilyPond user :-) So how can we move in a direction where translation work is less technically challenging? I believe that with regard to the program string translation (gettext, po, pot files or whatever), there is some sort of process that detaches the language teams from the technical details. Maybe we can move more in that direction for the manual texts as well? I don't have good suggestions here at the moment, but I should think that there is potential for getting more people involved for making their own language look better-suited for reading about and working with LilyPond. I've never worked at the translation of a manual which uses gettext. I don't think any have been proposed in the last year, and it is very much questionable that any remaining listed bounties will be easily collectable. Collecting money is an issue, I understand. Maybe a developer who decides to work on a bounty feature could contact people who offered money and set some conditions before the work starts. For example, I know that two developers (that I respect and trust) will probably work, in the coming months, on a feature really important for me. I'd be happy to pay in advance and whatever the final results will be. Which means: even if they won't be able to cover all the possible situations, I'd still be happy to see implemented all the basic features related to that area. I tried collecting on a number of low-hanging or not so low-hanging bounties probably a year ago or so, and it has been my experience that the process of trying to collect the bounties (even though I eventually managed to get about 75%) amounted to a disproportionate effort and, quite worse, was a major turnoff. It turns out that even a bounty of €25 or similar throws many people into bill-paying mode where they question every achievement by default, delay payment until they have have found time and leisure to corroborate that the stuff does what they think they wanted to have (partly different from what they specified they wanted to have) when they were still using LilyPond etc etc. That's sad.. Well, keeping this experience in mind, you might consider trying to work again on a bounty and ask people to accept your conditions before starting to work on it. If they accept it, fine; otherwise, it's ok anyway, at least you've tried. So it has been at least my experience that with regard to the balance of motivating and demotivating experiences, the bounty system was not working out. I'd recommend against linking to the remaining bounties. I think that any user will be happier to invest some money on a specific feature he/she really wants rather than on general development. I've just realized that in this snippet the hidden notes, used to make the grace slides, have a string number which is printed (and it shouldn't). Re: LSR updates and translations
2012/6/20 Phil Holmes em...@philholmes.net: - Original Message - From: Francisco Vila paconet@gmail.com To: Phil Holmes em...@philholmes.net Good, I like it in principle, but how will be changes being tracked using SHA IDs? Currently, translations have a SHA ID which is that of the snippet it is a translation of. Any change to the original snippet is done in a commit whose SHA ID is used to generate a diff against the ID of the translation. This determines what the translators have to work on. That's a bit I'd deliberately glossed over since I didn't/don't fully understand it as yet. My idea would be that, using the new system, changed snippets would look exactly like changed documentation files. If I modify, say, /Documentation/notation/ancient.itely, how do the translators pick up that this has been changed? We copy in the translated file a committish which identifies our latest revision. We may use the committish of the latest commit (of the repository), as recommended in the CG. Or the committish of the latest commit of the original file, as me (and Francisco) do in order to easily see in the log of the file which version we translated/updated. As long as Documentation/snippets is tracked by Git, translators should be able to keep track of the changes in the snippets. Check check-translation.py to see if your changes will break something. When you have a patch, I can test a translation workflow and see if it works as expected. Anyway, your plan seems great. Moving away the translations from the Git-tracked snippets is the easiest solution, as we discussed months ago. Thanks! Probably this is too much difficult for a newbie. Actually, I've got a good suggestion on how you could get started with python and all this stuff. Currently, makelsr.py adds different amounts of blank lines to some .ly files depending on whether you run it as a full import vs. when you run it locally. It would be nice if that didn't happen. [I've just started looking at this.] I think that blank lines are not the only problem. git log shows that most of the snippets' commits are related to the update of committish in translated texidoc strings. It's what we are talking about in this thread: in order to mark a snippet as updated, a translator updates the committish in the .texidoc file and run makelsr, which copies the new committish in the snippet. So the snippet gets a new (unnecessary?) commit, which makes all the other translations of that snippet out-of-date. It's a dog chasing its tail. These committishes copied inside the snippets are needed? IIUC, check-translation doesn't care about the committishes placed inside a file; it just check the latest git commit hash: line 38 of check-translation.py: vc_revision_parse = 'git log -1 --pretty=format:%%H %s' What happens if we remove all the %% Translation of GIT committish: strings in the snippets and change makelsr so that it will ignore the first line of .texidoc files when it copies them in the snippets?
