Two problems with << ... >>: Forgetting dynamicUp and losing lyrics

Attached is a file showing two problems I have using << >> to
temporarily split a vocal part.

1) I have set \dynamicUp but this setting is ignored within the angled
brackets.  I could put \dynamicUp inside every set angled brackets,
but is it possible to set this globally?

2) The lyrics skip the section in angled brackets.  How can I fix this?

I use Lilypond on Ubuntu and I just user the installer from
lilypond.org.  Get the latest from here:

$ chmod +x lilypond-2.10.33-1.linux-x86.sh
$ sudo ./lilypond-2.10.33-1.linux-x86.sh

If you already have another version installed, it will give you
instructions for uninstalling it first.

Dated, but not as dated as I thought.  I have just checked and
apparently, version 2.10.25 is available for Feisty - only 8 minor
versions old!  Last time I checked (Edgy, 2 versions older than
Feisty) it was still 2.6, which I wouldn't have considered touching
even when Edgy was released.  My guess is that a Lilypond fan has
recently joined the Ubuntu development team.

I don't know if this is the same problem, but I found that sometimes
 the stanza label, "1." for example, was not given enough space and it
 was printed on top of the end of the previous part of the lyrics.
 This problem disappeared when I moved from 2.10 to 2.11.

Thanks Bertalan and Mats.  I have managed to get it working now,
except for some misaligned lyrics but I can sort those out myself.

To be honest, I was quite amazed that convert-ly was able to convert
such an old file with just a single problem.

How exactly did you extract Lilypond?

If you have downloaded the shell script
(lilypond-2.10.33-1.linux-x86.sh) and run it as root, it should now be
installed in /usr/local/.  It is possible that /usr/local/bin is not
in your path.  What happens when you try:

$ /usr/local/bin/lilypond

I am using Lilypond on Ubuntu and I have never had problems running it.

Yes, there is an Ubuntu package available in synaptic but, if I
remember correctly, it is quite old and the packages you can get from
http://lilypond.org/web/install/ are easy to install anyway.

Support for Gregorian Chant is not great in Lilypond, unfortunately,
but you can use it for simple things.

For bar lines, you want to use the special commands that are set up by
gregorian-init.ly.  Specifically, the double bar line is \finalis.
See section 7.7.9 (Divisiones) for the whole list.  I think you will
still need to use \bar "" to indicate places where the line can be
split.

I haven't played with chant in lilypond for a while, but I think I
remember that it still uses the default time signature (4/4) and note
length (crochet or quarter-note) even though these don't mean anything
in this notation.  What you are seeing is the line being broken at the
(unprinted) bar lines, which occur every 4 crochet notes.  (Note that
the podatus on 'un-' of 'unheil' is two notes.)  An even more
unfortunate side effect of this is that if you have long melimata the
spacing gets messed up, because lilypond allocates a certain amount of
space for each neume even though they are clustered together.  You can
see this in your example, where the notes above 'unheil' have too much
space between them.

I found that there was no real 'clean solution'.  I tended to have a
lot of \bar "" commands after various notes more or less around the
place where I expected line breaks to occur.  Unfortunately, I don't
think chant is very high on the list of priorities with the developers
and, to be fair, there probably isn't really a compelling reason why
it should be.  I did have a look at it once but I don't know enough
about scheme, python or chant notation to be able to get very far.

You want to add:

versetwo = \lyricmode {

and then later, where you have:

you want:

Note that the lyrics are not part of the staff, but are a separate
line in themselves so you can have as many of them as you want.

have never had reason to do it so I don't know how.

I haven't tried it, but you should be able to do this with lyrics.
The only slight complication is that - and _ are special characters
and I don't know how you would display a dash underneath a note rather
than between syllables.  It might work if you put them in quotes - eg:

\addlyrics { "_" "_" "_" "_" }

The hidden notes will be treated as any other notes, so you can add
the names underneath as lyrics.

Is it possible to get Lilypond to include a text file?  Something like:

  \markup { \include "/etc/passwd" }

This doesn't actually work (it just writes out "/etc/passwd"), but if
you find a way of doing this, this would be a potential security
issue.  Also, consider what might happen if someone uploads a file
called:

  "test.ly; rm /var/www/"

These examples are specific to Linux/UNIX, but there will be
equivalents for any OS.

Bug in ties over barlines

I have (I believe) found a bug in Lilypond, and I am fairly sure what
it is, but I would like to check with people who have better knowledge
of music theory than I before I submit it to the bug list. In the
following code:

\time 4/4
aes'1( a')
aes'~ aes'
aes'( aes')
  }

I believe that the first and third ties are displayed incorrectly.
Specifically, the first tie should have a natural in front of the
second note, and the third tie should not have a flat in front of the
second note.The second and third ties should be identical, except for
the type of tie used, while the first one should be different. Am I
correct?

Thanks to everyone who responded and explained that Lilypond's
behaviour is correct, and that it is possible to use
set-accidental-style to get the behaviour I expected. I agree with
Janek that the theoretically correct behaviour can be confusing but I
understand better now the differences between ties and slurs.

Custom paper size

Is it possible to set a custom paper size by specifying dimensions?

seems to suggest that the only way is to manually edit the paper.scm
file.

What I want to do is have a very wide page so that an entire piece can
fit on a single stave. The reason for this is to produce a video to go
along with the music that shows a single stave scrolling left and this
seems to be the best way to do it. I would be grateful to hear if
anyone has done this sort of thing before or knows of a better way.

Forgive me for jumping in, as this is a long thread and I have only
been partially reading it.  However, I have a couple of comments which
I hope will be useful.

Firstly, I think the new web site looks great.  I do not think the
current site looks particularly bad (I have seen much worse), but it
is fairly basic and a little dated.  Lilypond is about producing
beautiful music scores and the web site should reflect this.

Regarding how to find the 'Alternate input' link, I did find it fairly
easily following the 'Introduction' page.  I do, however, think that
it would be sensible to have this link also also on the 'Download'
page, perhaps in the warning about Lilypond being text based.  Eg, "To
see how Lilypond can be used in other ways, try the alternate input".

There has been some discussion about whether people understand what is
meant by an editor, environment, etc.  Would it help to hide the fact
that people are actually using Lilypond directly, and instead refer to
"software based on the Lilypond engine"?  I must confess that I have
not tried most of these editors myself so I do not know how much the
actual running of Lilypond is hidden from the user, but if (in the
case of Denemo) someone can just point-and-click with the mouse, press
a button and then get the output does it matter whether or not they
know what is actually editing a text file?  Also, referring to
"software based on the Lilypond engine" you can pass it off as 3rd
party software (and therefore supported by someone else) but give it
the Lilypond seal of approval for compatibility.

I don't think an ambitus is what he is looking for, but rather a way
to indicate the tuning of the timpani.  This is where I would expect
to find something about it but there doesn't seem to be anything:

  


You could almost certainly do it by writing it as music at the start
of the line and then adding space at the start of every other line,
but it looks like something that should be added to the list of
feature requests.  I would have thought that the code for creating the
ambitus could be modified to display every note in the line instead of
just the top and bottom.

Multiple sections in ChoirStaff

I am trying to adapt the example in D.4.1 (SATB vocal score) of the
user manual to allow for separate sections using different music and
word.  So, for example, the sections of the music should be deffined
as:

but I have so far had no success getting the words of Part B appearing
anywhere, let alone with the correct music.  Is there an example
anywhere showing this being done?  Also, can someone please explain
the significance of the "{ s1 }" in the "\new Lyrics" lines?  I cannot
find any reference to this anywhere in the manual.

Thanks to all who replied with suggestions.  Below is my attempt
(which may have errors in it and certainly doesn't have all the

It is not pretty and it doesn't to a great deal of syntax checking but
below is a perl script I've just thrown together which extract the
parts as you require.  It should pick out things like 'soprano' while
ignoring things like '\soprano'.  You should save it in a file called
ly-extract and call it with:

$ ly-extract infile.ly outfile.ly label

where label is soprano, alto, etc.

I don't know how perl works with Windows, but I would guess that you
would need to change the first line in some way.

Creating a booklet with psbook

I am having a problem with the output of lilypond which, according to
some posts I've found in the mailing lists, appears to be a problem
with ghostscript and/or it's fonts.  One such thread, from the
developer mailing list, starts:

 

Does anyone know of a workaround for this or is it possible, by using
a particular version of ghostscript, to get around this?  Ideally,
what I would like to do is to take the output of lilypond and create
an a5 booklet.  I have tried using pdf2ps to get back to a ps file,
but for some reason the margins get messed up.

Not sure if this solves your problem (I don't really have time at the
moment to read it in detail) but you can add note lengths to Vaticana
notes in the same way as you do with modern notation.  They do not
change the appearance of the notes but they alter how they are aligned
with other staves.

I only wonder: Is there a more elegant solution?  Its not only a
eastetical quiz: If I also print the Vaticana "parts" separatly the
extra spaces are just that: extra spaces botching the normal spacing of
the notes and giving things a rather weirdo look when not in the mixed
scorecontext.   Its also a bother to have to edit in/ out the extra
spaces and somewath time consuming as I had to process the score at
least a few extra times (at least this first time)  to get alignement
and overall look right.

Staff colour in ancient notation

Interesting.  I had not seen this before, but a quick Google search
suggests that it is not unknown for chant to be printed in black and
red.  Just for reference, it seems that, based on the documentation,
this was changed in Lilypond between 2.4 and 2.6.

As you are using relative pitch for the notes, each note is put in the
octave closest to the previous one.  This is done regardless of where
the previous note occured, so it doesn't matter that it might be in a
different chord.  In your example, the 'si' in the second chord is put
close to the 'mi' in the previous chord, which happens to be an octave
below the 'si' in the first chord.  To solve this, you need to
explicitly put it back up an octave:

Thanks for the suggestions.  Unfortunately, it appears to mess up the
positions of the bar lines, that I am putting in manually.  I haven't
tried it without

\override Score.SpacingSpanner #'strict-note-spacing = ##t

which was missing in Mats' suggestion, so maybe that will help.

A couple of other questions.  I am using this to write music that is a
combination of chant and modern notation.  If I use

\include "gregorian-init.ly"

the spacing for the modern notation gets messed up.  However, I have
got round this by taking a copy of this init file and commenting out
the line

\override SpacingSpanner #'packed-spacing = ##t

How should this be turned on and off manually within the score?

Finally (for now), in the 'Bugs' section of section 7.7.10, it says:

"Accidentals must not be printed within a ligature, but instead need
to be collected and printed in front of it."

This bug causes the accidental to be printed on top of a note, so it
cannot be seen.  Is there a workaround for this?  Is this fixed in
2.11?

I think that I have almost, but not quite, got a workaround for this.
I am helped by the fact that the only accidentals that ever occur in
this type of music are b flats and b naturals, and I am choosing to
ignore for the moment that there may be issues with different octaves.

The \flt and \ntrl functions print a flat and natural in front of an
invisible note which is in the same space as the notes that are to be
printed.  However, the first of these appears to be invisible as well.
I have tried using \\ like in the 3rd example in section 5.3 of the
manual, but this seems to revert the music to modern notation.  Can
anyone please suggest what I am missing?

I am using automatic note splitting (section 6.2.7 of the guide) and I
have encountered a problem with lyrics.  I have attached a sample
(first few bars of the top parts of a Palestrina Mass) with the words
"Ky -- rie e -- lei -- son" but the 'e' of 'eleison' appear on the
first notes of bars 2 and 3 in the soprano and alto parts
respectively, while they should be on the 3rd beats.  In both these
cases, the note at the start of the bar is split over the barline by
lilypond.  I have tried this in the latest stable version, 2.10.25.
Can anyone suggest a way to fix this?

6.4.8 of the user guide, but for a voice within a ChoirStaff.
Attached is my attempt at modifying the example but a clef and time
signature appear at the start of the line (also, a key signature would
appear if there were one).  Is there a way to get round this?  I want
to use this in a score with several lines it should appear next to a
specific line rather than in a separate staff.

Thanks, that has (almost) worked.  I was using Voice because I was
adding lyrics with \lyricsto, but it seems that in this case
\addlyrics works just as well.

However, this does not completely solve my problem.  In my score the
extra line appears a few pages in but there is space in the first line
that I cannot get rid of.  Using \RemoveEmptyStaffContext removes the
space from most of the lines but I cannot remove it from the first.
Attached is an extended version of the example I sent earlier in which
I hope this is made clear.  I have increased the font size so that it
runs to 3 lines without having to be too long.

episema on one note

In Gregorian chant is it possible to put an episema on a single note?
Section 7.7.7 in the manual shows how to do it for a melisma but not a
single note.  I found someone asking the same question in the mailing

Verse and refrain spacing

I have recently started trying out Lilypond, now that I have got round
to getting an up to date version (2.6.3).  For my first attempt I have
tried a Christmas carol and I have managed to work out all of the
problems except one.  I have entered the refrain and three verses
following the trick at the end of section 7.3.7 (Vocal Music: More
stanzas) of the documentation.  My problem is that there is too much
space between the lines of the first staff, which only contain the
refrain, because 3 lines worth of space is being allocated.  Is it
possible to remove this space when it is not required?  My code is

Thanks, that's perfect!  I was expecting to have to completely
restructure the code.  Now after changing the global size it fits

I think the second suggestion is probably better if you can get it
working, but you can remove the time signature with:

To see this working, have a look at some examples in the documentation

for example) and click on the image of any music with no time
signature.

Aligning ancient and modern music

I am trying to typeset a piece in both ancient music (gregorian chant)
and modern notation.  Is it possible to align notes in the two
notations?  I realise that it may need to be done explicitly for every
note.

Further to this, I have included below a copy of the code I have so far
(now I have finished entering it).  As you will be able to see, the
lyrics can be linked to either the modern or ancient music but not both
at the same time.  Is it possible to link music to lyrics with
something like \musicto instead of linking lyrics to music with
\lyricsto?  This may be a solution.

I found that notes in context VoiceVaticana could have note lengths
specified in the same way as normal.  Although lengths specified in
this was is meaningless in Gregorian chant, it allows the notes to be
aligned correctly.

Problem with \textwidth and lilypond-book

I am trying to change them margins in a document that I run through
lilypond-book.  The code below is an example of what I am trying, but
the second line of the music is put, for some reason, to the right of
the first line and not below.  If I remove
'\setlength{\textwidth}{160mm}' then it appears correctly (except that
the margins are not how I want them).  Can anyone suggest what might be
the problem?  I am using version 2.6.3.

Another point regarding this is that the 'something important' that you
are missing is that only one of evensidemargin and oddsidemargin are
used on any one page.  They refer to the outside margin of even and odd
pages in a book respectively.  The inside margin does not need to be
specified as it is determined by the other lengths.  A diagram that
explains this is in Lampart's book as well as on page 113 of the 'Not
So Short Introduction to LaTeX 2e':

  

Having said that, I am having problems myself with the margins (I have
already asked a question about it) and Graham's suggestion is probably
better, although I don't have the geometry package installed.
