He was badly hurt when he jumped out the window to escape the fire…. He is going to Acton Household Goods on Saturday with a truck but they don’t have a bed. Anyone? There a South Sudanese family in Lynn whose house burned down. The Uncle lived on the third floor and jumped out of the window and got very hurt. The house has been rebuilt but he still can’t go back to work. He is looking for a queen mattress and box spring. He is going to Household Goods on September 28 - he’ll have a truck then. I am working with a South Sudanese woman who is working at the Farmer's Markets selling South Sudanese napkins, bags and scrunchies. She has a two-year-old and as we all know, childcare is very expensive. She wants to bring her very mellow child with her on Saturdays. [LincolnTalk] Taunton/Niagra Falls
First, I just came back from vacation and thanks to Lincoln Talk we had a great time. Niagra Falls- both sides are tacky but American side is tacky and run down but we had a great time seeing it! Didn't do the Maid of the Mist but saw it! Went to the Power Plant which was very interesting We started our trip with a mineral bath and a massage at Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Springs...fabulous. Then onto Clayton New York and a ferry to Grindstone Island which was wonderful (John's grandfather had a boys camp there) then onto Toronto- great city! People are so friendly! Found a fabulous Vegan restaurant...had a Food Tour and went biking on Toronto Island (Heaven) Went to Niagra on the Lake which was superb and then Stockbridge and home. Ten days and wonderfuland now There is a South Sudanese family who lives in Tauntonsingle Mom with four kids. Mom works in Boston and the kids are signed up to go to camp Everything is paid for BUT we can't figure out how to get the kids home from camp We have tried everything- COA, School, Anything we could think of... We need someone to pick the kids up at YMCA and drive them home five days a week at 4-11 miles. We will pay well for this trip- Does anyone know anyone? You've come through before...please? If no camp then the kids are home unsupervised ALL summer :( Yes desperate Susan Susan Winship, LICSW Executive Director South Sudanese Enrichment for Families PO Box 492 Lincoln, MA 01773 781-424-8774-- The LincolnTalk mailing list. [LincolnTalk] Volunteer needed for South Sudanese family in Acton!
This is a gem of an opportunity! There is a South Sudanese woman and her 4 year old son that arrived a month ago to be with her South Sudanese husband in Acton. The husband has developed some major health issues and is in the hospital for the foreseeable future. He has a mentor-woman in Lincoln- and has for 24 years! But the case is complex, and the mentor just became a grandmother, so she doesn't have as much time as she feels is necessary. The woman needs a friend- someone to visit and call her. She is incredible and strong. The four-year-old is going to camp this summer and will start school in September. He is smart and very cute. This would require about 2-4 hours a weekbut...your life will change forever. The volunteer would need to have a clean CORi. There is support from SSEF and the mentor who is absolutely incredible. AND the family lives right near Donelon's in Acton- so easy. If you are interested, please email me or call me at 781-424-8774. susanwins...@comcast.net mailto:susanwins...@comcast.net This new volunteer needs to be a female- South Sudanese (and Americans!) don't like men to be with their wives in their home. This is a lovely lovely family. In Acton also is the husbands' child from previous marriage. She is 9 and full of beans and lives with her mother in Acton. She is doing great and is a big help with the 4 year old with whom she is in love. She is going to camp this summer and school in the Fall. I am eager to have this person start as soon as possible. [LincolnTalk] Napkins today Friday from 4:30-6:30 PM 10 Meadowdam Road
We have a few bags,10 scrunchies left all made of African Fabric. The bags are great - $50 a piece and the scrunchies are $8. I also have a few wallets which are $18 (I use one and love it!) And we have napkins! These are $15 a piece All profits go to the Women's Project at SSEF; we employ 10 South Sudanese! Who sews? Many young mothers at home with young children; some college students paying their tuition, some mothers home after working all day want to be home with their kids-they sew when the kids are in bed and can make $30-$35 an hour. This helps them actually pay the bills. Their rents are high but their salaries do not go up. So buying the napkins is great in itself (they are beautiful) but you are also helping a grass roots organization help families (mostly women and kids) stay off the streets. Shelters are full. The housing crisis is real. It is very hard for single women with children. This is targeted at them to help them support their kids. Questions? susanwins...@comcast.net mailto:susanwins...@comcast.net SSEFBoston.org for more information. We do a lot- thanks to many of you. I am very grateful. Merry Christmas! [LincolnTalk] Art and crafts fair!
Perfect weekend for checking out the Pierce House! Lots of art, pottery, jewelry , candles and cards! And of coarse beautiful napkins hand made by South Sudanese women! As you know, life in Boston is expensive. Many Sudanese women are home health aides- long hard hours and very low pay. Instead of them getting a second low paying job away from their kids , Ssef is offering an opportunity to sew and be at home with the kids! We pay them to sew and then we hire south Sudanese to sell. We hve partially employed 12 people! If you buy the napkins you are supporting women and their kids!! Everyone on my holiday list last year got napkins- - they all love them!! [LincolnTalk] Update on the South Sudanese
It has been a long time since I wrote which is good! I usually write when I’m feeling completely at my wits end. Currently many south Sudanese are being triggered by the current war in Israel. Many nightmares have been happening and we are All on edge. But the Sudanese are very Familiar with humanitarian crisis and Extreme violence… I wrote a Few months ago about almost homelessness of many of our Community Members..no one ended up on the street but we all were very very worried. Here is an update! A south Sudanese man was living with his five kids and wife in Malden. Crammed to say the least. The wife works at Trader Joe’s and he is working at churches as he has a Masters in divinity from BU -but likely not making a Lot of money! He didn’t qualify for affordable housing- made $7000 more a year than he needs to qualify- He just bought a house in Leominster and more room for all. His oldest daughter just started Brandeis but she is scarred and trying to find her way. They are stable thanks for a Donor who contributed to the down payment. A woman whose husband hit her with a hammer went into a Shelter with her four kids- they did find housing in Taunton. The husband continues to be in jail- no bail no trial - horrible. He is Now Committed to a Hospital because of Lack of housing- long story/ ! She was punished being Hit and now with him committed -he can not Work- she has little income…punished again. Thanks to a Donor she gets some Financial help from Ssef for rent. A single Woman lives in Salem- fled a very dangerous violent husband. She works full Time at Amazon- her Oldest son now goes to college and helps pay some Bills- phew. Ssef gives her $200 a month for rent- thanks to a Donor…can’t figure out how to get her expenses down but we are helping her figure out how to get her ex husband to pay child support. He pays nothing now.don’t get me started. We have a wonderful volunteer helping her with housing and kid issues! A Young Woman in Lynn with a 7 year old. She has had many cars breakdown and she just couldn’t get ahead. Thanks to a few very generous donors- she bought a new car- it’s waiting for her - she went into the navy and is in ….. the Middle East we think… please pray. Her child is with her Mom and sister- all is stable but we haven’t hear from her in the Middle East- The stories go on and on …. Ssef continues to help with the cost Of Preschool, tuition ,drivers education and summer enrichment. We Spent almost $100,000 on summer Enrichment. We have started a one to One Financial literacy program which is a lot Of work but effective …costs Ssef a Great Deal of money but it is the only way to help people understand their finances-getting more control! We now offer technology training and offer computers for those who go through the financial Literacy program. The bottom line is that genocide affects generations of people. This is a story of trauma not just immigration . Seeing people being slaughtered is an image that never leaves one’s memory. Please help all in the Middle East but also don’t forget about the south Sudanese! Please please put me out of business! We need support to Continue our work. Please email me with questions!! [LincolnTalk] From Arlington Talk
We have developed a bad landscaping habit, the fall cleanup. We rake, or worse, blow the leaves. We cut back the stems on our perennials and put everything in yard waste bags to be carted away. In doing so, we kill our pollinators, their eggs, and other critters that overwinter in the leaf litter, interrupt the natural soil building process, remove insulation for plants, and create unnecessary (and often noisy) work for ourselves. How do we break a habit we have been doing for generations, a habit that gives us a feeling of accomplishment, one that marks a rite of passage for autumn? We make a decision to prioritize the creatures other than ourselves, and start a better habit. We no longer do a fall cleanup; we do a fall neatening. *Instructions:* ? 1. Leave the leaves. ? 2. Don?t want leaves or sticks on the lawn? Rake them into a brush pile. ? 3. Rake leaves into the bed, not out. ? 4. Leave the stems and seed heads of your dead plants so our native bees ? can lay their eggs in them, and so birds can eat the seeds. ? 5. Check for cocoons and chrysalises on outdoor pots. Leave planters ? outside and create winter arrangements. ? 6. Leave expired plants on site instead of composting. Tuck them under a ? shrub or put them in a brush pile. This protects insects and their ? overwintering eggs. ? 7. Sweep the driveway, the walkways, the sidewalks. Aside from trash, ? put it back into the garden. ? 8. Use sticks and branches to make artwork, borders, or retaining walls ? for slopes. ? 9. Clean your tools and put your gardening equipment away. ? 10. Adjust your aesthetic and embrace a wilder look. ? 11. Enjoy a cup of apple cider and know that by doing less, you are ? doing more. I am writing to you with an unusual request. My wife Mary helps to administer the Sustainable International Development Program at the Heller School at Brandeis. The students come from all over the world, as you might imagine. One of Mary’s students from Kenya has a teenage daughter and has been having an extremely difficult time finding housing. So far, she has only been able to find a one-month rental in Somerville which will end on September 30. She does not have a car and so is hoping to live near a stop on the Fitchburg commuter rail line which passes through Lincoln, as you know. I am writing to you on the remote chance that you know someone in Lincoln with an empty “mother-in-law” apartment or other empty living space that Phyllis could rent. I believe that she can pay up to $2,000/month. She is a second-year student, so Mary knows her very well and can attest that she would be a good tenant. Her daughter just joined her, having stayed behind in Kenya for the past year. I know it is a long shot, but if you have any leads or suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. [LincolnTalk] Another South Sudanese story
Sally is the mother of four kids - lives in Chelsea. She is beautiful and speaks well but cannot read and has a 2nd grade education. Her husband, small gentleman with a major speech issues, hit her over the head with a hammer when her boyfriend came over to the house. The father went to jail. There was a lot of stress in the house. Both parents during the pandemic lost one of two jobs. The father was experiencing major mental health issues. The kids were "learning at home" The kids at the time where 3, 8, 10 and 11.learning? How? Both parents were working their one job and desperately trying to find a second job. The father worked for 18 years at Bed Bath and Beyond making $15.50 an hour. The mother continues to work at Whole Foods making $17 an hour. Because the father is in jail the mother is responsible for all the bills which she cannot handle. Feb 1 she was evicted and went to stay in a hotel because all shelters were filled. She and the kids will stay there until housing becomes available- maybe 2 years? There is nowhere to cook or do laundry. The father is in jail and has been for three years without bail or a trial. Just another day at work. What is SSEF's response? We are writing letters to the fathers' public defender to try to get him a trial and bail in March. We have facilitated the father instead of the Nashua Street Jail to be at the Recovery Center in Worcester. He gets therapy and tutoring. A volunteer is working with the mother to try to have some stability in their life. Many Sudanese are helping getting the kids to school etc. We have another woman with two kids going into a shelter in March and we have one child taken away from her mother. Very very sad. Two Sudanese families are going to take the child in. On the flip side- there are 5 South Sudanese college students at Umass Amherst and doing great! We have 10 Sudanese sewing and making money while home with their kids! We have three kids going to Andover and 14 to Cushing Academy this summer and we anticipate 40 kids going to sleep over camp.We also have many many kids going to day camps this summer. And this is amazing!!! We have 8 families that are in our Financial Fitness Program where we assess where they are financially and what they need to do to meet their financial goals. There is a waiting list. We are getting there ..all with your help. Thank you...the need is huge. [LincolnTalk] Who will be a President of the United States?
About twenty years ago I got a call from a woman who barely spoke English but I could understand that she was concerned about her 2 grade son. After further investigation it became clear that her son had been repeatedly suspended from the Lynn elementary school he attended and that is why he was home frequently! After much thought SSEF contacted the Catholic School Foundation. A long story short- this kid, Taban, got a full scholarship through the Catholic School Foundation through 8th grade at Catholic School. He did GREAT!! Not only did he do well but was very well liked. He spoke at his 12th grade graduation (also a Catholic School in Lynn) and has held many leadership positions at school. Chris Molinero and her husband Terry have been volunteers with this family for twenty years and you know what? It has made a big difference in this family's life. As Chris says- every family needs someone to walk alongside them. Taban is the poster child for the Catholic School Foundation. And keeps the staff of SSEF going when things get tough- we think of him and understand that the possibilities are endless if people are given a chance. Taban was given a chance and see what happened? Taban's mother who lives in Lynn just got her Driver's License; she used to be a cross walk monitor and now works doing childcare at the YMCA and Taban is a junior at Fitchburg State. He just won the 3k and 5k in track competing against Tufts. Taban is a superstar. Smart, great people skills...a great great kid. He needs a paid internship in technology this summer. If you have any leads that would be appreciated. Please email me at susanwins...@comcast.net mailto:susanwins...@comcast.net He will get me his resume tomorrow. A wonderful success story. He will make the world a better place. Susan Susan Winship, LICSW Executive Director South Sudanese Enrichment for Families PO Box 492 Lincoln, MA 01773 781-424-8774-- The LincolnTalk mailing list. [LincolnTalk] Family in need of winter coats
I am working with a South Sudanese family that is in total distress. The parents both lost one of two jobs during the pandemic. The kids were learning remotely.-means that they weren't learning at all.The apartment in Chelsea has rats and roaches. Sometimes the landlord turns off the water. About two years ago, the father became very violent leading him to go to prison for several years so far. He is in jail; but has never had a trial and there is no bail. Not great. Terrible system. The mother who works at Whole Foods is suppose to have enough money to pay the bills and take care of four kids? Impossible. The mother and kids are moving into a shelter next month because they are being evicted.Better than being on the streets- shelters are usually filled up and at times are very violent. So it doesn't always work- depends on the shelter. Some are filled with women and kids. The family is rock bottom so we want to make this as gentle as possible for the kids. They need warmth- boots, coats, warm fuzzy things. Journal for the young girl, the mother needs warm clothes or a gift certificate and the father needs soup because the food at the prison is so bad. We have found someone to get the kids boots but need help in getting them winter clothes esp coats. Atem is a 13 year old girl and size small Ajak is a 11 year old boy and size 12 Deng is a 7 year old boy and a size 7 Bob is 6 and a size 7. The names are made up! Please email me if you can help make Christmas a wonderful holiday for this family. This family has been the hardest we've dealt with. Speech issues, mental health issues, the prison system a medicure school system at best,.a sleezy slum lord, an overwhelmed system. A lot for the Mom to deal with. If you can help, let me know. [LincolnTalk] Black Friday ideas
Do you have ideas about holiday gift-giving that does not create more egregious waste? Please share. I struggle with this myself. Here are my ideas: 1. Discuss purchasing a local farm share with your friend, family member, or loved one, for year-round pickup in the Heights, on Lowell Street, from Farmer Dave?s: https://farmerdaves.net/share-descriptions/ A farm share will provide healthy, in-season, local produce with little to no packaging. 2. Consider locally-crafted gifts from seasonal artists fairs. 3. Make something yourself. Baked goods, jams, and fermented foods are a terrific idea. 4. Give a vintage item, possibly something you already own, something without packaging that was long ago manufactured and looking for a new home. 5. Consider offering a service (snow shoveling, etc) or a donation to your friend?s favorite charity. 6. For folks who are committed to cooking at home and eating healthy meals, but want to move away from cooking with nat gas (which leak cancerous benzene and irritates asthma),? for around a $100, you can purchase an electric kettle, portable induction cooktop, or instant pot pressure cooker. You might find these items on eBay, used. & Have Happy International Buy-Nothing Day (aka: Black Friday) Best wishes, Kristin Anderson -- Sent from Susan Winship, LICSW -- The LincolnTalk mailing list. [LincolnTalk] We are failing our kids
I would like to share some of the things SSEF has been seeing - just so you know. Ninety percent of the South Sudanese community are doing great. We just sent 48 kids to sleep over camp including 16 that went to Boarding Schools for the summer! The parents and the kids love academic rigger. We have one family that is moving to Concord! We are thrilled! However the 10% that are not doing well are being failed by our system..those 10% have KIDS who are being neglected because of our broken systems. Case #1 We have a family with 4 kids - they live in Chelsea. The father who was very stressed a year ago hit the mother and he went to jail. A few months later the daughter age 12 told her counselor at school that she was suicidal and had a plan. The Counselor called Boston Medical Center mobile team who does evaluations in homes. That team will not see anyone unless the person says it's okay. The mother said the daughter was fine,She was not evaluated. SSEF had to step in. The mother has to now financially take care of her family. She works at Whole Foods and makes $17 an hour- four kidsshe can't make ends meet. She is living in a horrible apartment that has bugs, mice and rats. They should move out of there BUT her credit score is horrible and no one will rent to her. She has a car which is expensive ...but her kids are in four different schools so she needs a car to get them to where they need to go each day. When the father hit the mother Department of Children's Services got involved. They saw the family for a short period- never contacted the father- they have closed the case.So we have a family about to be evicted, kids with mental health problems and they closed the caseSo we are spending time writing letters and connecting with different shelters for this family...shelters are full and you have to be on a waiting list. Horrible. Case #2 A woman and her two kids live in Lynn in a shelter. The mother has a long history of mental illness. The girls thanks to SSEF (And many of you) were involved in Girls Inc (fabulous organization). The mother was involved in job training- sort of. Her extended family lives in Lynn and the girls would see them occassionally. A permenant housing situation came up in South Boston. The mother thinking this was a good idea, signed a lease for one year. The girls lost Girls Inc, the mother lost her connection to Lynn Health Center, and lost close connection to her extemnded family. The family moved almost a month ago. We went there two weeks ago and there was no food, no fans and no furniture. The apartment is in public housing in Boston. Need I say more? Horrible place. We have a mother who is very stressed and has a history of mental illness, living with a 8 and 10 year old in a horrible neighborhood. The 10 year old looks 25- tall and very beautiful...BUT 10. Called DCF two weeks ago and it took them 9 days to visit the home. The girls who sleep a lot during the day were sleeping when DCF visited.. DCF never contacted us despite calls and emails. In the meantime SSEF called the police and they did a well check but never spoke to the girls. They felt, according to the mother, that everything is fine. SSEF contacted the Lynn Health Center and has an appointment on Tuesday there with the mother, a psychaiatric nurse and the primary care phyiscan. Two issues- the shelter doesn't understand where the mother is coming from and connected her to permenant housing in South Bostonthe shelter is doing little to nothing to support the mother through this transition. DCF and the police? Useless Lynn Health Center- a savor. I could go on and on about how our systems are not working to help kids that are vulnerable. It is very painful to see...and this is Massachusetts! How can you help? All donations received to SSEF in the next few days will go to the Housing Fund. This will enable us to continue to refer families to appropriate support systems and follow up! It is not something SSEF has done in the past but because of the housing crisis we are seeing issues more and more. A delayed crisis ..and the kids are the ones who suffer.. [LincolnTalk] Housing Blues in Boston
Thank you to all who responded to my cries for help. Although the long term plan for housing is VOTING!! So please vote whenever you can. I work with the short term affects of the housing crisis. This is what SSEF is doing now: We have hired someone for 15 hours a week to help our families check their credit score and find housing. We are forming partnerships whenever we can.All organizations that help with housing are overwhelmed at the moment. We have set up a housing fund and are asking for contributioins to: Defray the risk for cosigners by guarenteeing them $10,000 if the renter defaults The monies will be assessed in two years and either put in the summer fund or keep it in housing if there continunies to be need. We have raised $18,000- our goal is $50,000 ($10,000 allocated for 5 cosigners- we have 3 so far) A donation to the housing project would be very helpful as we help these families find a place to call home. Otherwise, the families will be on the street. Unbelievably on the street. These are the working poor. Work one or two jobs and can't pay the rent. The system is broken. Please consider a donation SSEFBoston.org or send a check to: SSEF PO Box 492 Lincoln, MA 01773 We are looking for : 2 one bedrooms 1 four bedroom We anticpate one two bedroom One four bedroom Challenge is good for the soul, right? [LincolnTalk] Heart Break because of lack of housing.
We have five families who have kids and bad credit. For a variety of reasons the family needs to move. Because of bad credit they can not get an apartment. Period. These are people who work hard as home health aides or people who work in hotels. These are good people who work very hard. Their credit is bad because their car broke down and they couldn't pay their bills and the car repairs; or they had covid and could not work for a few weeks; or the kid's preschool was closed because of covid. So they have no where to go. So what do they do? They make too much money to go into a shelter. They send the kids to Africa to live with grandma for a few years and the parents stay here and work 2-3 jobs and save up to buy a house. A horrible situation where the parents just can't find a way out. SSEF is offering a guarantee of $10,000 towards rent if the family defaults. But the family has to find their own cosigner. If they can't..either they live on the street or pay on their credit card for the kids to fly to Africa for a few years. It is very hard to be the bottom of the totem pole. It's heart breaking. Lots of painful good byes. Kids saying good bye to their parents to live with relatives they never met before. Everyone is in pain. If you want more information email me! [LincolnTalk] Housing
Good morning! I can tell you that the cost of housing is completely out of control. I work with many low income folks and housing is a huge issue. A woman who works at Amazon making $17.75 an hour and has four kids does not qualify for Emergency Housing…. She makes too much money. A man who had tb of the spine and is on disability and his wife works as a home health aid making $15 an hour four kids- can not find housing. Anywhere! The man in this family goes to Divinity School at Bu. They will likely have to move out of state. Great family. I could go on and on…. As a small nonprofit we have had to hire someone to help navigate the housing maze for clients. I got an email yesterday for an affordable house in waylaid for over $300,000!! Affordable for whom We all need to raise our voices!!! Lynn two bedrooms is going for $2200 Woburn two bedroom $2300 Salem three bedroom $2100 and is considered a steal!! SSEF has many families that need housing and good schools. Likely they will live in horrible housing in towns with terrible schools and the cycle goes on and on. Let’s blame them….. We are increasing our funding for summer educational programs which is better than nothing but better that people lived in towns where the kids educational needs where being addressed. On a happier note- several lincoln people helped a woman and her kids find housing- a wonderful volunteer from lincoln worked endlessly to find housing and financial resources; three incredible lincoln folks helped completely furnish an apartment. A lincoln man and others helped co-sign her lease. Gives me hope. Please help in any way …… ssefboston.org Susan Sent from Susan Winship, LICSW -- The LincolnTalk mailing list. Desperately seeking 3 bedroom apartment for family in need Ssef has a fabulous volunteer working with this women who looking for Housing. They have been looking for 9 months. My friend Natalina left Sudan many years ago due to civil war. She established a secure life for herself in Memphis, where she lived for over 20 years with her husband and 4 children. In Memphis she and her husband owned their own home and she was steadily employed. Due to domestic abuse, she left TN and moved to Salem, MA and is currently in an untenable living situation. Natalina is working full time and was just promoted but cannot afford an apartment for more than $2000/month. She is on waiting lists for affordable housing but it can take years. Can anyone help? [LincolnTalk] Merry Merry!
This was written and submitted to the Arlington list >> ?Twas the night before Christmas, but Covid was here, >> So we all had to stay extra cautious this year. >> Our masks were all hung by the chimney with care >> In case Santa forgot his and needed a spare. >> With Covid, we couldn't leave cookies or cake >> So we left Santa hand sanitizer to take. >> >> The children were sleeping, the brave little tots. >> The ones over 5 had just had their first shots, >> And mom in her kerchief and me in my cap >> Had just settled in for a long winter's nap. >> But we tossed and we turned all night in our beds >> As visions of variants danced in our heads. >> >> Gamma and Delta and now Omicron >> These Covid mutations that go on and on >> I thought to myself, "If this doesn't get better, >> I'll soon be familiar with every Greek letter". >> >> Then just as I started to drift off and doze >> A clatter of noise from the front lawn arose. >> I leapt from my bed and ran straight down the stair >> I opened the door, and an old gent stood there. >> >> His N95 made him look pretty weird >> But I knew who he was by his red suit and beard. >> I kept six feet away but blurted out quick >> " What are you doing here, jolly Saint Nick?" >> >> Then I said, "Where's your presents, your reindeer and sleigh ? >> Don't you know that tomorrow will be Christmas Day? [LincolnTalk] Autism and a Developmental -Behavorial Pediatric specialist
There have been many things about the pandemic that has had a tremendous effect on the South Sudanese community. If you have a few hours I will be glad to share. But in the meantime here is a story - we need help! There is a family who lives in Lowell. Their son,age 3, has been diagnosed by the primary care Docter with "Suspected" Autism. This family is experiencing extreme stress . The mother is finally back to work and the 3 year old has just started preschool. However, because of his behavior, the preschool calls the mother frequently asking her to pick him up because the school doesn't know how to work with him.The mother then has to leave her (low paying ) job and pick him up. She understands that the job may fire her because she has missed so much work. Apparently the child needs to get on MassHealth and also needs to be evaluated by a Developmental Behavioral Pediatric Specialist and diagnosed with autism for the child to get access to many services to help him tranistion to school. HOWEVER, getting this evaluation done can take MONTHS because there is a backlog caused by the pandemic. I wonder if there is a specialist who would be willing to do this probono so we can do this quickly and get this family services? Does this make sense? [LincolnTalk] Thank you Lincoln
On this very hot afternoon I am writing to thank you for supporting the Sudanese as you have done. I can't tell you how you have been a life line for this community. You have made masks, napkins, helped kids in the community, donated to our programs, consulted with me about difficult cases, you've volunteered at our Sat Program, you volunteered with different programs, you've been a reader, you've given clothes for kids and adults...the list goes on and on. I can't tell you how much this has meant to the South Sudanese community and to me. Gives me hope. Thank you, thank you, thank you. [LincolnTalk] Going back to School!
We are all hoping that all kids will be able to go back to school in the Fall. SSEF has one family where the mother is in a homeless shelter with her two adorable girls ages 9 and 7. They get $300 a month to live. Can you imagine? SSEF is doing everything we can to help this family. SSEF has paid for the girls to go to Girls Inc which has been fabulous. The mother is in job training now so she can get a voucher for Girls Inc. Although the future looks better for them, the girls need clothes and back packs with school supplies for going back to school .. If you could provide the needed items or the funds so that these items could be bought, let me know. You would change the future for these little girls. susanwins...@comcast.net Susan Winship, LICSW Executive Director South Sudanese Enrichment for Families PO Box 492 Lincoln, MA 01773 781-424-8774-- The LincolnTalk mailing list. [LincolnTalk] Trash
Just to let everyone know - someone dumped a pile of trash- a sewing machine in the cabinet, a few large plastic containers with glass, a elecrtric sander and beer bottles. I called the police and they said this has happened around town. The police can not pick up trash on private property ...so we will bring it to the dump but be aware! it is a lot of stuff- one car load easily. Such a bummer. [LincolnTalk] Green Household products
On October 23 SSEF will host a Supergreen event and will sell gently used children's clothing. We are also partnering with Mothers Out Front, Lincoln Green Energy Committee and the Sunrise Movement and hopefully a few more. We are also partnering with Donelons who we want to sell household goods that are green. Wondering- what green products are people using? Or what would you like to use? Please let me know so we can order items for you! We will start collecting clothes in August. Save your clothes for us! All funds raised will go to our Preschool Scholarship Fund! Thanks.
