I've had that problem before in other ways These may be too roundabout, but, 1. Maybe code the sound in Flash inside of a movie clip that's set to stream. So when the movie is paused the sound stops. I don't know by which method you are making the Flash movie static, but just sending a command to also pause the said movieclip when the Flash movie is made static. 2. Load the sound in the flash movie on separate levels and unloadMovie the sound level whenever the Flash movie is paused or made 'static', then loadmovie again to resume the sound. lingo-l still no go 3ds max Shockwave axes
It's still not working. I did exactly what you said, in terms of the hierarchy tab and hitting reset. I had to do it on an exitframe handler, because when I try to do it on the initialize frame (set up), if the doors are not completely loaded I get an error when I try to turn them. I was just playing with this stuff today and I found that if you select your models and click the Reset Transform button in the 'Hierarchy' tab and then export. I am using 3ds max 5. I just downloaded the 3ds max 4 exporter, (which is said to work with max 5). It works fine, textures and all, but the z axis orientation is messed up due to Max's z axis being up and down. So all models come out on their side. I'm sure this is a common problem; what is the remedy for this? I have seen two viable alternatives in Shockwave: 1. The skybox by Barry Swan. Looks even better than QTVR and you can even pan ALL the way down to look at floor or pan ALL the way up the look at sky. It should be at http://www.theburrow.co.uk 2. GlomTime VR-- I cannot remember the author. I just got finished deleting my copy of it, but it is more of a left and right 360 degree pan. I don't think this one uses actual Director 3D. The latest version has hotspots wired into it. If you can't find it on google write back. I'm not sure that 95% of viewers have Shockwave installed. If the plug in is your biggest issue, then I would do it in Flash, but that's just my opinion. This effect would be relatively easy in Flash, and most people DO have the Flash player at least. I saw a Flash version of this as well. But a lot of it depends on your source images. lingo-l script error -- deleted objects?
My project has 5 3d worlds, all of them are about 5 frames each, lined up one after another, all on sprite 1. I have several parent/child scripts and a few timeout objects running that basically control the navigation through the worlds, creation of primitives, etc. which is basically the same for all worlds at this point with minor variations in floor color, etc. I have buttons on the side of the stage (outside of the 3d sprite). When you click a button it takes you to the (download and cleanup and initialization process for the new world you are going into. So it all works fine. No matter how fast you click back and forth between worlds everthing is fast and fine. The problem is that when I use the EXACT same lingo with picking methods inside of a property script attached to one of the actual 3D sprites. I always get a ton of script errors from one of my parent scripts that controls the navigation within the world. The errors always alert me that several objects in the scene I am jumping FROM are expected that are not there. Its as if I am switching horses mid-stream and the horse that I am jumping from dies before I can get a good seat on the next one. At least that's what appears to be happening. Why would it be so easy to jump from world to world with a button behavior script and not from with picking lingo in a behavior script attached to the 3D sprite itself? Yeah I just found out that the ART version of Cinema 4D does support W3D export for director. (Art version is about $595 or something close to that). I am no expert about operating systems, but from what I have heard, XP is not much of a significant improvement from 2000/NT in terms of performance. I upgraded from ME which was very much needed, because, as even Microsoft admits now, ME was garbage. XP runs on that same 2000/NT platform and it mangages memory much better than ME and 98. I run Bryce, Poser, Flash, Fireworks, Drmwvr, Cinema 4D, 3DStudio Max at the work place and never really have any problems. this same machine previously was on ME and it works much better now. But of course this is irrelevant to you since you are upgrading from 2000. Re: lingo-l 3D Modeling Software
At one of my gigs I have Cinema 4D and it works well with Director. In fact, learning Max got to be a little too much for me with my time restraints now, and I found C4D to be extrememly intuitive. I mean even today I kind of stumbled upon how to create splines form bitmap images and extrude them using NURBS and was able to create exactly what I wanted within about 2-3 minutes after using the help file for literally 20 seconds. (Although Director 3D does not support NURBS). But also the exporting to W3D format for Director works very well. I have exported about 20 or so models into Director just playing with it over the past week and it is very easy and rewarding. The models, lights, textures and everything will be intact, although I have not tried exporting animations into Director yet, but the Shockwave export dialog options reveal that it should be possible. One caution: terrains export to W3D very very slowly and you should reduce polygons before exporting. As polygon count is always an issue, and they have a polygon reduction tool that you slap onto a model kind of like a child object and you can decrease the polygon count of a particular model, or you can decrease the geometry resolution for all models in the Shockwave export dialog options. Plus, as Grimmwerks pointed out to me, there is a 30 day free trial for Cinema 4D...I would highly advise that, then you can decide. Dag. lingo-l Simple alpha channels question for 3d textures
Hello everyone again I have a tif image ( a soap bubble) with a transparent background that I created in Fireworks. Fireworks allows for alpha channels to export when you export in tif32 format. (you have to use a transparent matte). So I exported as tif32 and imported for use as a texture for a particle system (bubbles under water). When I allow for alpha transparencies in my texture using #rgba5551 or #rgba, the particle system looks fine. But I am concerned about some system renderers that do not support alpha textures. Of course, the image looks terrible when I remove the alpha tranparencies. So my question is: is there a way (in Photoshop perhaps?) or another program to set the background color of the bitmap to a default color that will show IN THE EVENT THAT the end user's 3D renderer does NOT support alpha channels? clonemodelfromcastmember I have tried using this several times in various forms. I have always tried to preload the member I am cloning the model from. my latest try was on an exitframe handler: (here I am trying to clone a model named platonic from the member platonic into the member may31 and rename it newnamex. I use pflag to flag if the member has been loaded yet, otherwise it keeps trying until it loads. on exitframe me property pflag if pflag = true then --preload platonic 3d castmember with model platonic in it. if (member(platonic).state = 4) then member(may31).cloneModelFromCastMember(newnamex,platonic,member(platonic)) pflag = false else pflag = true end if end if Nothing happens. when the movie runs, I have done the isInWorld() test to check for the new model(newnamex), which should be in the scene, but its not. The other models in the scene pass the test. The model I am importing was created in Cinema 4D and exported via w3d into director. actually, to respond to your reply, though, I think its the other way aroundthe models THEMSELVES created in Cinema 4D import very nicely into Director, and textures and lights do as well. (although, as you mentioned before, Cinema 4D occasionally will flip the models, but this is easily corrected.) C4D seems to not export the model RESOURCE, though. i wonder if this is the problem. I have tested for scene.model(x).resource in the message window and the model resource of the imported cinema 4d model does not seem to come through. I bet Tom Higgins could answer thishe pointed me to this command in the first place. but i think he's busy no response. Tom Thanks for your reply; it is very clear. cloneModelFromCastMember() is definately what I want for this. I am assuming that removing models from a world (instead of just setting visibility to #none) when they are not needed will free up some RAM. In terms of visibility, my set up is so that I want to navigate the camera through a limited area in the 3d world. I am building a boundary management system using modelsunderray to detect for collisions and then deflect the user within the confines of a certain path. I thought a good way to do this would be to build walls (like in a maze) and then set the visibility to #none. Each wall would be a box primitive, and new walls could be added/deleted easily. Would you recommend this kind of system? I am assuming that modelsunderray will still detect the models even though they are not visible. The concept of confined boundaries is a very simple concept, so I am curious how it is traditionally done. lingo-l help! using addtoworld
I have a 3d castmember with a few models in it. I have a model imported via w3d (made in 3dsmax) that I want to import into that 3d castmember that already exists. I want to add just one specific model from the imported castmember into that world. I thought that this code inside of my startmovie script member(rhouse).model(Terrain-11).addToWorld() would add the model Terrain-11 from the imported file rhouse into the original 3d castmember, named world1, But it doesn't. In the message window, I typed put member(world1).model(Terrain-11).isInWorld() and it was false. so somehow I'm not getting the new model into my original 3d castmember. How do you do this??? I am going to need to keep importing new w3d models into this original 3d castmember as I build my project. lingo-l aligning camera with model
hello all 2 questions: I have a simple room with several models in it created in 3ds max that I imported as a w3d file. The entire room and its contents are a little tilted in along the x axis I think and maybe a little also on the z axis so that the camera looks down on it in Director from somewhat of a bird's eye. I am translating the camera through the scene with the arrow keys. The unlevelness of the room is really evident once you get inside the room and closer to the objects. I thought that if I made the camera a child of the floor model (a simple box primitive), it would make the camera level with the floor but neither #preserveparent or #preserverworld were able to achieve this automatically. So my two questions are: 1. How do I make the camera level with the floor to make a believable walk-through, and 2. How to I add other 3ds max objects to this SAME scene after I create them? by the way, in terms of the room and it's models, I did put scene.model(box01).getworldtransform() and got -- transform(1.0,0.0,0.0,0.0, 0.0,1.0,0.0,0.0, 0.0,0.0,-1.0,0.0, 0.0,10.80512,8.62321,1.0) -- I am wondering if I should focus more on grouping all of the objects in the room and aligning THE ROOM to the camera instead of the other way around. Sorry if this has been discussed before. I'm sure it has ;) Is there any way for a quicktime movie, when it is done playing or when the user does something, to communicate with Director? I have a QT movie that is 4 min long inside of director. i need a way for it to trigger something in the director movie when it's done playing OR when the user does something. From my experiments, a flash geturl inside of the QT won't do. I imagine there is lingo for this. lingo-l can't get QT VR to look right
I'm not sure if this is more of a QuickTime question or a Bryce question. Everytime I create QuickTime VR movies with Bryce, the VR pan looks very unrealistic. I don't know how to describe it...it's almost like the image is printed on a big flat ribbon, and as I scroll to the left and right, the ribbon is rolled past me like it was printed on a flat surface. I tried playing with some of the camera settings, but with no luck. I have seen a few QuickTime VRs, one of which appears to be have designed in Bryce and published in Director, which have a full screen, non-distorted QuickTime VR. (The way it's supposed to look). These movies actually look like you are standing in the environment and looking around, instead of looking at a flat image on a paper towel rolling past you. How do you do this? lingo-l good interactive media school
What are the best programs in interactive media in the NYC, NJ, PA area. (Preferably Philadelphia)? OR a good distance learning program. I am specifically looking at game design. I went to an orientation at the Art Institute of Philadelphia a few years ago. They talked a little about Director in the sessions. But the program seemed a little soft and very expensive. And I think it was associates and bachelor's degrees only. I would prefer MFA programs. Like I notice Paul Catanese went through an MFA program in Art and Technology somewhere in the Chicago area I think. lingo-l I might need CD ROM consultant
A client of mine (a university program) is shopping for a developer to do a CD ROM presenation. They have an in-house media production unit that is part of the university but they apparently are very expensive. I got a hint that they may be asking me soon about me doing it. I might place a bid for the job and out source part of the job. I am comfortable with the QuickTime most of the scripting elements, but in terms of producing it on CD ROM, I might want to out source that part to see how it is done, just to make sure that I don't make any mistakes the first time. So, if you have CD ROM production skills, if you could contact me off list and give me a ballpark figure as to what you would charge in consulting fees for the production aspect of the job. (Not printing or other stuff, just production of the CDs). I have not placed a bid for the job yet, but I want to be prepared to do so before they approach me. Heidi I am on the digest, so I don't know whether or not your question has been answered. I made a Flash track and tried to pass variables into Director with on GetUrl handler but the variables did not pass, which seems to confirm what you have been told, at least thru THAT method. However, I have found the quicktime list to be very helpful to answer those types of questions. There was one guy on there who uses that live stage pro software professionally, and claims that it can do amazing things with flash and QT. lingo-l QuickTime vs.Bitmap sequence in Director
I have several 3D animation sequences that I can export either as a quicktime movie or as bitmap sequences. This is all being packed inside of a Director Projector. QT compression would be Sorensen 3 with a maximum 150 KB per second . Which would be faster-- 1. Bitmap sequences in Director 2. QuickTime in Director I dont want to use the QT because it would involve a potential QT install for my user. The Flash inside of Director requires no install when it is played in the projector. Ill use QT if I have to. They both run at the same speed on my computer, so Im really thinking of performance on lower end computers. lingo-l 3Dgroove , Havok
What's the deal with 3D groove? Do they only deal with people who are working on a major game title? I have phoned and emailed them about information regarding their product with no luck after more than a week. From a bird's eye view I like what they have because it seems to run fairly fast on your average PC. I am designing a simple game for a CD ROM that has a brief adventure component. I wanted to use Havok at first, but I wonder about the usability of Havok for a broad client/user base. That thing really can bog down a system. My two PCs are both modest: neither has a 3D graphics card, one is circa 600Mhz and 256 Mb RAM and other is 800mhz and 128 mb of RAM and Havok stuff runs pretty slow, yet Director games in 3D groove are fast. 3Dgroove was used to design the new Shockwave 3D game for Dora the Explorer on Nick Jr. and it runs very nicely. (www.nickjr.com) Also check out Leo's World II -- mystery island at http://www.pepworks.com/ Is it naive to compare 3dgroove and Havok? I hate to even compare them without having info on 3Dgroove, but with all this exposure on Nickelodeon they must be swamped now and can't answer a phone call from an amateur I'm sure. Hence my query. lingo-l simple prop list question
OK I have narrowed the problem down to its simplest form. where gturn is a variable for the turn of a current player, Director will recognize put ginventorylist[gturn].fish -- (fish is a property in the proplist) but it WONT do put ginventorylist[gturn].ganimal -- (ganimal is a variable that is fish in this instance) -- in other words, I can put a variable as part of the list name, but not for the property , because that part cannot take a string. it sees the quotations and it doesn't work. how to I convert the ganimal variable into a symbol so that I can use it this way? or is there a better way to do this.? _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. lingo-l Flash MX--less likely to slow Director projectors?
I am wondering aloud if Flash MX will work better with Director in terms of animation speed. Having started with Flash, I must admit that it is easier for me to create animations in Flash and then import them into Director. One thing I like about Flash is how easy it is to create multiple nested timelines with MCs. But I have read on this list, and in a few books, about Flash bringing Director to a crawl, so I have only been integrating small Flash stuff like buttons. lingo-l Quick Time loading question
After looking through the QuickTime section on Apple's site, I still have not figured out the loading process for a quicktime movie that loads off a CD. Everything there seems to speak to QuickTime loading off of a web site. (Progressive download, streaming, etc.) I am creating two or three QuickTime movies for a projector that will be on a CD, each movie being about 17 MB. My computer has a decent processor and decent RAM, so of course it loads pretty fast for me. But are there users out there who will experience significant delay, or pauses? Is there a lot of buffering time? (For example, your Pentium I, 45MB of RAM users). lingo-l QuickTime and Projectors question
I am considering creating a movie that uses QuickTime VR (Panoramic). The version to be used would be Quick Time 3, which is fairly common. Macromedia's Director support section says that bundling the Xtra with the movie can create problems for certain end users. Are there any disadvantages of Putting the Xtra in a separate folder? lingo-l how do u concatenate vars inside repeat loop?
Hello This is something that seems fairly simple...but I'm not doing it right. I am building a simple game where the user enters number of players which is stored as gnumPlayers. then a repeat loop is used to set up several things for each player, depending on how many players there are. everything in the loop worked until I later tried to add an empty prop list for each player. Each list is to have a unique name concatenating the player number with the list name.
