To be honest, though, unless you want editable text, the only benefit the text member has is its convenience Are you including anti-aliasing as a convenience? That's a pretty big one for me. I find your idea of using png files intriguing. I guess you couldn't do much in the way of text manipulation, but it's a good idea for titles and the like. Re: lingo-l Fonts- Win v/s mac, text vs/ field
Antialiasing, in fact, is an absolute requirement for some of us foreign-language users and odd-ball font users. Slava, I liked your post--that is good info. What has your experience been with Director 8 and 8.5 support for foreign code pages? I know it was an issue with D7--it only had support for Western European languages. You were kind of out of luck if you weren't in the ISO 8859.1 group. How does it do with scripts such as Cyrillic, Polish, Turkish, Czech, Greek, and others? Is it handling them now? I used to do a lot of localization, but I've been out of touch for about a year. I don't want to get too far behind :-) Cordially, Kerry Thompson [To remove yourself from this list, or to change to digest mode, go to http://www.penworks.com/LUJ/lingo-l.cgi To post messages to the list, email [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Problems, email [EMAIL PROTECTED]) Lingo-L is for learning and helping with programming Lingo. Re: lingo-l Fonts- Win v/s mac:
Fonts on Win and Mac almost never look the same. This is not only in Director. Have you checked the fonts on both platforms in any other program? There are ways to manipulate the fonts and the spacing in Macromedia Fontographer. But this is complicated. You could also generate a Win-font on the Mac. If you have only few text, and the text doesn´t change and must not be searched. Make an image out of the text. Pixels are most reliable. If you embedd the font, make sure you check the font Xtra in the Director menu: Modify - Movie - Xtras. Ralf. Re: lingo-l Fonts- Win v/s mac:
Hi Pytkin. I have never had a crash when selecting or embedding a font. The problem with the national characters certainly is no Director problem. If the national characters work fine in any other program (MS-word for example) but not in Director, write your text in the other program, then copy it to the clipboard and paste the text into a director textfield. Re: lingo-l Fonts- Win v/s mac:
Fonts on Win and Mac almost never look the same This is because Microshaft...sorry, I meant Microsoft use an entirely different font size and generation routine to EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE INDUSTRY. There are four exceptions to this: Arial, Tahoma, Verdana (the Mac version is a pain to get) and Times New Roman. In the case of the latter, though, you will have to juggle the font map stuff the associate Times New Roman on the PC and Times on the Mac. To be honest, though, unless you want editable text, the only benefit the text member has is its convenience, of which drops through the floor when developing cross-platform solutions. I much prefer to use PNG images for my text - if properly designed and compressed they are fine - I've had big titles with the embedded alpha for a mere 4k and the overal DIR file didn't take a size or performance hit at all. Why do you not want to embed the fonts in the movie? Re: lingo-l Fonts- Win v/s mac: Help me ?
namaste, As Mr. Fiskeaux says, unless you have a compelling reason otherwise, the thing to do is to embed the fonts in the director movie. then you don't have to install the fonts on the system, you don't have to worry about which fonts are on the system. you still have to test cross-platform, of course, but i find embedded fonts to be pretty reliable. --bhakti [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi list, I am developing cross-platform cd (windows mac).I am installing font (eg.Verdana) in users machine by installation programme. Re: lingo-l Fonts Mapping Fonts
I'm also curious--are you developing on Greek Windows? Is your font a true Greek font--i.e., does it use code page 1253? Director 7 dropped support for code pages other than 1252 (Latin 1), and I'd be happy to find out that they restored it in D8. I'd appreciate knowing the system and version of Director you're using. Thank you very much for your reply. Im developing the title using the english version of Windows and Director 8 . Yes the Fonts are True type. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do with the fontmapping. It is hopeless. I believe that many people are facing the same problem and I thing that companies must do something about it. I tried to install some new Greek fonts for Mac in the system folder of my iMac. The problem is that director 8(MAC) doesn't antialies them. I believe that it doesn't recognize them some how. It shows only 4 original fonts such as GR helvetica, GRcourier etc. It don't know what can I do about it. Any suggestions? Re: lingo-l Fonts Mapping
Hello there ! Im have created a project with director 8 for PC. I have used embeded fonts. These fonts are Greek. The same project must run on a Mac too. The problem is that the font maping for Greek on the Mac is different to the one on the PC . The result is that when the project runs on a Mac you can't read anything because the font characters are substituted by completely wrong ones. So, I tried to use the fontmap.txt provided in the director folder where I modified the fontmap numbers and then load it in the movie. That did work but still there are some characters which are not diplayed properly. I wonder if this is the right way to do the font mapping. Is there another way to do it? If you know anything on that subject please let me know. Thanks in advance! _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
