Why do such furores happen only when I'm not around

BTW...is what Bhakti saying, true? If it isn't legal to give out your

Director opens? Someone can just look over your back and copy it.

Just wondering...

RE: lingo-l director 8.5 serial :-E

2001-06-06 Thread jp

Since serial numbers are essentially proof of purchase
(when used in conjunction with the registration process),
and since I BELIVE that everything included on a Director
CD is covered by the license agreement(aside from 3rd party material),
distribution of serial numbers would most likely
be considered illegal. If not explicitly illegal under piracy
laws, it could easily be considered 'criminal facilitation' in
civil law.

(It's like handing out car keys from the local BMW dealership)

At the very least it is illegal to possess because of the assumed criminal
intent.(You have the key so it could be inferred that
you intend to use it - same reason drug paraphernalia is
illegal to have etc...).

well i know that an individual can legally sell a copy of directory that
sHe legally purchased. so i guess you can sell the program and serial

Bhakti, you trouble-maker ;-)

This is a bit of a dead horse, but here's one more flog...

1. We don't really own a copy of Director. We've bought a license. I
haven't read the license agreement all that closely, but I suspect there's
some language in there about one machine. If you give somebody a copy of
your license, wouldn't it be like giving somebody a copy of your driver's
license?

2. I understand your intentions--you're not promoting piracy, you're just
curious. Yet... I don't want to sound like a company flak, but we've
hitched our wagons to Macromedia's star, and to a large extent, our careers
will flourish as Director flourishes. From a purely pragmatic point,
anything that damages Macromedia, also damages ourselves.

Incidentally, I've gotten a couple off-list responses to my comment about
Turkey. The guy asking for a crack was sending ISO 8859-9 encoded e-mail,
and that's Turkish. I hope nobody else took my comment as racist--it was in
fact the opposite. I've worked with some fine Turkish engineers, and it
would pain me to see them tarred with the same brush--IOW, just because the
would-be cracker is Turkish doesn't mean Turks are pirates.

Cordially,

Kerry Thompson

RE: lingo-l director 8.5 serial :-)

2001-06-06 Thread Kafka's Daytime

I think this discussion may have been pushed a bit far considering
the original request (including the request for an Iconizer crack)
was clearly a dishonest and illegal one.

Outside of some of the more subtle particulars of copyright law, which
you'd probably need a lawyer to decipher (at least, *I* would) I think
using your good common sense makes, well, the most sense.

Don't disseminate serial numbers online...don't honor requests for warez
or serial numbers especially on this very helpful and legitimate list...
and don't use up inordinate amounts of bandwith talking about some of the
more subtle (and admittedly interesting) points of copyright law.

Our mail server has been down and I missed all the fun!! :(

Why do such furores happen only when I'm not around

BTW...is what Bhakti saying, true? If it isn't legal to give out your
serial number, then why is it displayed on the splash screen everytime
Director opens? Someone can just look over your back and copy it.

  Just wondering...

Actually, it's more like handing the keys out the keys to the BMW car that
you already bought to someone that you know is a fugitive. If you know full
well that your action is leading to a crime (and if you can think of another
use for a serial number other than software piracy, do tell), you are as

2001-06-04 Thread Bastien Bouchard

Jilesh,

I'm not sure i have a good understanding of your specific question
but...some general tips, this morning:

1- it is not necessary a good idea to post your message specifically to
*one* user of the list (it's even worse when he is not a highly skilled
Lingo programmer... :-) )

2- please, keep your personnal liscence number... personnal, i'm unrelated
to Macromedia... (altough it may be of some help to some friends on the
list! :-) )

3- buy a good introductory but complete book about Director before tempting
to realize a project (The Director Bible for example)

4- search by yourself in the Lingo dictionnary when facing a new programming
problem, that's what i do about every day myself. Good luck, and get back if
you really can't find solutions there.

Bastien

PLEASE do not EVER post your serial number to this, or ANY OTHER list.

You should ONLY give it out if YOU have called Macromedia and they ask for it.

It's not quite as bad as giving out your credit card number, but it's not
far behind. It acts as a key. It should be carefully guarded.
