Assistance COnnecting to Samba
Morning, I don't have much experience with linux, and I haven't had to work with this server in quite a while. SuSE Linux 11 SP 1 running in an LPAR (yes, an LPAR, no z/VM). I am receiving the following messages on the HMC Integrated Console (I also see them in /var/log/messages: Sep 9 11:25:44 galileo smbd[7579]: [2013/09/09 11:25:44, 0] lib/util_sock.c:1498(get_peer_addr_internal) Sep 9 11:25:44 galileo smbd[7579]: getpeername failed. Error was Transport endpoint is not connected I think I know the endpoint it's complaining about - my PC. But I can't figure out how to verify that. Also, I can't map a new network drive to the linux server. I think if I could map another drive to the 'proper' directory, it would fix this issue. I have one network drive mapped successfully, to my /home directory, and it works. I should have a second drive mapped to /usr/share/doc/manual directory, but when I try to make the connection, Windows complains. It says one of three things: the server doesn't exist, the server exists but it can't access the directory, or the server exists but I misspelled something. This is Win/7 Pro 64-bit, if that matters. Advice? Suggestions? Thanks, Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. Mark, It was an issue with the default gateway. I'm not sure why, but the default gateway was set to 157.145.4.150. The proper default gateway IP is 157.145.4.50. So, that part is working, now. And one other thing. It doesn't matter what organization the patch is from, or what it's for, I always apply it in a Test/Dev environment to make sure it does no harm. If these policies don't exist - they should be developed - so I would be working to define that. There are so many approaches to patching.. 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' - 'stay a release behind current' - 'apply security fixes immediately' .. that being told 'patch more frequently' doesn't really give you much to go on. Install a Bacula server on one of your distributed hosts that has access to larger capacity tapes and install the Bacula client on this LPAR. Much easier. If you must do the backups from here, Bacula server and client can deal with 3480s directly on the Linux LPAR. Make sure that the tapes are moved over, then activate them by echo "1" > the appropriate device address node in /proc. Echo "0" to the device node when you take them away. > Anyone know if Oracle can 'back up' to these drives? RMAN to disk works fine (in your case, NFS mounting a chunk of disk on another host would be smartest). You probably could do it directly to tape, but Linux and multivolume tape is not straightforward, and RMAN doesn't cope very well with it. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@vm.marist.edu with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390 -- For more information on Linux on System z, visit http://wiki.linuxvm.org/ -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to lists...@vm.marist.edu with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390 -- For more information on Linux on System z, visit http://wiki.linuxvm.org/

No, I didn't define a NFS server on the same image. You can define a second LVM on the same image. In this case, the first LVM is for Oracle (if you don't need top performance, LVM for Oracle tablespaces reduces management quite a bit) and the second LVM for Oracle backups. Another point about PR/SM: The more LPARs you have, the higher the PR/SM 'overhead'. Which will affect all your LPARs, not just the Linux ones. Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. This kind things happens when they deliver glossy brochures to people living under a rock...:-) For z/OS a popular LPAR configuration rule seems to be that you don't want to assign logical CPUs and weight such that the LPAR has less than 10% of the CPU. Maybe they transposed that rule freely. Or maybe the customer had 5 IFLs and someone concluded that you thus can run 12 images per IFL. One of the interesting side-effects of the 60 LPAR thing that I see is peole running z/OS test systems on z/VM. They started to create more z/OS images because they could, and found out it is almost impossible to manage with the restrictions that PR/SM has. So once they were spoiled by having many z/OS images, they were ready to go beyond that point and take advantage of z/VM. FTP Security Issue
Afternoon, A fairly new linux admin here. I am running SLES 11 SP 1. I activated an FTP server, and I can sign on successfully, using my 'user' id, using the same credentials that I use to sign on to the SLES 11 system. But other users can't sign on. When they try to sign on, they receive a 530 Login incorrect error. Some of the failing users were created after the FTP Server was setup/activated, if that makes any difference. And I can't find anything, via YaST(2) regarding authentication for the FTP server. SUSE 11 SP 1, Oracle 10g Install - Network Config Assistant Fails
Morning all, A fairly new Linux Admin here. I'm trying to install Oracle 10G 10.2.0.2 on to my SUSE 11 SP 1 server, with help from one of our local Oracle DBA's. But she's stumped, too. I've run into several problems, most of which I've been able to get by with assistance via Google. But I've run into one that I can't seem to get by. Too many conflicting posts. The network configuration assistant failed, and I couldn't get the DB config assistant to run (it always retried the Net CA). I received the following messages int he OUI window: The "/u01/app/oracle/cfgtoollogs/configToolFailedCommands" script contains all commands that failed, were skipped or were cancelled. This file may be used to run these configuration assistants outside of OUI. Note that you may have to update this script with passwords (if any) before executing the same. The "/u01/app/oracle/cfgtoollogs/configToolAllCommands" script contains all commands to be executed by the configuration assistants. This file may be used to run the configuration assistants outside of OUI. Note that you may have to update this script with passwords (if any) before executing the same. when I look at the .err log I see the following 2 or three times, before it finally exits: JVMDG217: Dump Handler is Processing Signal 11 - Please Wait. JVMDG303: JVM Requesting Java core file JVMDG304: Java core file written to /u01/app/oracle/network/tools/javacore.20110203.161618.20925.txt JVMDG215: Dump Handler has Processed Exception Signal 11. /u01/app/oracle/bin/netca: line 190: 20925 Segmentation fault (core dumped) $JRE -mx64m $SRVM_PROPERTY_DEFS -Dsun.java2d.font.DisableAlgorithmicStyles=true -classpath $CLASSPATH oracle.net.ca.NetCA $* I have the 10.2.0.4 patch staged, and ready to go, to resolve the known link problems. But I'd like to make sure I have a basically working installation before I start patching. Ideas? Suggestions? Sometimes Google is not your friend (TMI!). TIA, Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. A Mix of LDAP and non-LDAP Users
Afternoon, New admin here. I am configuring a SLES 11 SP 1 system. LDAP has been mentioned for authenticating users. I can't seem to find anything in the manuals, but may very well be looking in the wrong places. Re: Error Creating LVM Volume Group
Mike, I'm pretty sure this is a 'user error'. Right now, I think I skipped a step or two in the 'Cookbook', where you define a partition on the disk and tell it 'Do not mount, do not format'. Don't know how I did that, and I'll know for sure if that's the problem, just as soon as I finish my coffee. Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. Systems Support Analyst County of Ventura, CA 805-662-6731 david.stu...@ventura.org>>> "Michael MacIsaac" 1/8/2011 5:41 AM >>> > Ideas? I vaguely remember seeing a 4010 return code and vaguely associate it with trying to make a physical volume (PV) out of a disk with a PV signature already on it. That's probably why you ran into this the second time, but not the first. Did you reformat the disks at the "DASD Management" screen? I'm guessing not. Try the install again making sure you activate and format all disks that will need to become PVs. Also, in the "Add Partition on " screen, heed the statement in the Cookbook: "The disk /dev/dasdb1 will be used in a logical volume. Select "Do not format partition" and "Do not mount partition". I believe this will prevent the 4010 error. Hope this helps. Now, there are a number of other packages that need to be installed for the YaST GUI to work, as opposed to the ncurses interface. Those might not be there. "bash -x /sbin/yast2" will show some of the tests that are made to figure that out. Extending a Logical Volume
Morning again, New linux admin here. I've added a new volume to the Volume group, and now I am trying to extend a logical volume. I'm following section 11.3 of the SLES 11 SP 1 Virtualization Cookbook, page 199. The full df output is below. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Afternoon, A new user here. I am getting back to my SLES 11 SP 1 install. I am trying to set up the Online Update Configuration. It keeps timing out. I believe it's running into our Network proxy. Are you trying to use the text mode installer via SSH, or the GUI? If the text mode, then you should be executing /usr/lib/YaST2/startup/YaST2.ssh to continue the install. If that's what you're doing then try running "unset DISPLAY" before executing it. If you're using the GUI, make sure that xorg-x11-xauth is one of the RPMs that gets installed. If it is, try connecting to the system using "ssh -Y" which enables trusted X11 forwarding. Morning again, I was able to successfully configure the disk, create a Volume Group (thanks Scott and Mike), and install the software. I don't think your config files will be affected. After all, the main thing Network Manager does is control which interface is active at any given point in time. It's going to need those configuration files to be valid. I would say that all that is needed is to use the ifconfig command, not ifup or ifdown, and "route add default gw" to get your network back up, and then SSH in to run YaST to switch back to the traditional "netcontrol" management. Hi Mark, Yes, I did. After the problem originally occurred. Both OSA interfaces were 'dead'. And I tried again after I reviewed the interface files after going through Ursula's procedures. After reboot, both were 'dead' again. I had to go through Ursula's procedures again to get it back. Right now, only one OSA interface is 'active', meaning that I can connect to it and it will answer a ping. The other is non-responsive. I'm not sure where to go next. Re: OSA/Express Assistance
Hi Ron, I am using the HMC, Operating System Messages, which limits what you can do. I'll check out the ascii console. Yes, I have two ports. I have two OSA/Express cards in the System. One port on each card is ethernet, the other is OSA-ICC. The ethernet ports on both cards are shared across all LPARs. I wish the HMC Op Sys Msgs allowed you to cut and paste... Let me see if I can get the ascii console working, and check on the files you were asking about. Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. Systems Support Analyst County of Ventura, CA 805-662-6731 david.stu...@ventura.org >>> "Ron Foster at Baldor-IS" 7/21/2009 6:32 AM >>> David, When you say, you have to connect to the system via the HMC, are you talking about the operating systems messages interface or the ASCII console interface? You say both ports. This implies more than one interface. What is your default route set to in /etc/sysconfig/network/routes? Is it set to one of the active interfaces? When you say you are getting martian messages, could you elaborate? Could it be that the firewall got turned on? The interface might be up, but the firewall is disallowing all traffic. Also, there is some sort of OSA support tool that our zOS guy uses. He can go look at the OSA and the what LPARS are attached to an OSA and what addresses they are using. The people who know how to use this tool are out today at a meeting. Do you all have someone who can look at the OSA with this tool and find out if the Linux LPAR is really attached and what address it is using. In my limited experience running Linux in LPARS, there are only a few files that have to be right to get the network up. /etc/sysconfig/network/persistentnetworkname (in our case) ifcfg-qeth-bus-ccw-0.0.a100 /etc/sysconfig/hardware/hardware name (in our case) hwcfg-qeth-bus-ccw-0.0.a100 /etc/sysconfig/network/routes And possibly /etc/hosts Also, if you all are a member of SHARE, there was a presentation some time back that included some tips on how to get the "network" up when it does not want to come up. If you do not have ascii console mode running, it might be worthwhile to use google to find this presentation. (A lot of the presentations are on the linuxvm.org website.) If I remember correctly, the presenter said that by using a few echo commands to the right places, you could get a network up. I never tried it though. I have to connect to the System through the HMC. But the rest of what I need to do to get things back active are off in the far hazy, recesses of my mind, such as it is... Re: SLES 10 SP 2 - OSA-Express Setup Assistance
Hi Mark, I'm configuring via YaST(2), as that's what I'm most familiar with. What I'm trying to set up is two separate ports, following the naming standards for the 'domains' on the other LPARs. eth0: ip: 157.145.4.159 name: tcpgalileo eth1: ip: 157.145.4.160 name: ftpgalileo They both share the same network mask: 255.255.252.0, gateway: 157.145.4.50, and dns servers: 157.145.4.48, 157.145.4.26 right now, eth0 is running as 4.160, and it will not connect when I try to ssh to it. Also, it does not respond to a ping from my PC. eth1, running as 4.159, does connect. The basic idea is to separate the 'small block size' traffic from the 'big block size' traffic (ftp, lpr, Samba, NFS, etc). Thanks, Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. SLES 10 SP 2 - OSA-Express Setup Assistance

I tried defining it using YAST, but the OSA-Express is running QDIO, and YAST seems to treat each individual address as a separate network card, rather than using the three required for QDIO. I chose a network type of QETH. I configured the proxy, and the 'test connection' says that it works ok, but when I try to 'register', check for patches, etc., it says that it can't connect. The other weekend the problem was with an OSA adapter in an LPAR. A few days ago, a cohort of mine had a similar problem with Hipersockets in a VM guest. She fixed the problem by putting the addresses in the CHANIDS. I just repeated the scenario with a Linux guest with hipersockets and separating the addresses with just spaces worked for me. (I did not have an LPAR I could take down just now. I had a guest under zVM that had a hipersocket connection that I could play with.) Let's try something. Get into yast. Edit the first address. 0.0.530.(I assume your addresses are 530, 531, and 532-not 531, 531, 532. On our system the OSA's require three addresses.) Put all the addresses in the CHANIDS separated with just one space. Finish up with yast and get completely out of it. Now cd /etc/sysconfig/hardware. You will see one file for each device on the system, including disk drives. You should see one called hwcfg-qeth-bus-ccw-0.0.0530. When you cat that file, you will see a line that starts with CCW_CHAN_IDS. That is where yast stuffs the addresses you give it. Check to see if that parameter has what you want in it. If you want to perform some further checking, another file that yast is creating would be /etc/sysconfig/network/ifconfig-qeth-bus-ccw-0.0.0530. When you cat that file, you see most of the other definitions that you put inside of yast. Hi Ron, I saw the CHANIDS field yesterday, and I tried what you're suggesting, separating the addresses with comma's (,) and spaces, but all I get is just the first address showing as configured. My addresses are 0.0.0531, 0.0.0531, and 0.0.0532. Thanks, Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. For example, I could pick 0.0.0600 and YAST would know to pick up 0.0.0601 and 0.0.0602. With SP2, as you noticed, you cannot do that. Then I noticed something. When you choose 0.0.0600, on the very next panel that pops up, you will see a place to put CHANIDS. If you put all three of your addresses in that place, things seem to work. That is I would put 0.0.0600 0.0.601 and 0.0.0602, and did the rest of the customizing, the OSA adapter would come up. SuSE 10 SP 2 - New Install - Misc Questions
Morning all, Yesterday I completed a new install of SLES 10 SP 2 into an LPAR. During the install, I defined one OSA-Express port, and it appears to be working fine. However, I have several networking related nuisances and questions. 1) How do you define a second OSA-Express port? I tried defining it using YAST, but the OSA-Express is running QDIO, and YAST seems to treat each individual address as a separate network card, rather than using the three required for QDIO. I chose a network type of QETH. I didn't see anything specific to QDIO, but thought QETH was probably the closest. 2) Novell Customer Center - We have a proxy between our internal network and the internet. I configured the proxy, and the 'test connection' says that it works ok, but when I try to 'register', check for patches, etc., it says that it can't connect. And that's enough for so early in the morning. TIA, Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. Re: SuSE 10 SP 2 - LPAR Install - Gotcha's?
Thanks Mark, Where can I find the Release Notes for SLES10 GA? I found them for SP2, and then for SP 1, but I can't seem to locate the GA Release Notes anywhere. I had a little fun getting the install system to 'talk' to my FTP Server, and then the proper directory, but I worked it out. I'm up to DASD configuration... Thanks, Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. Bruce, I have a z9 BC. And the HMC has enhanced 'load from remote source' over my previous processor. Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. The way the HMC works and what your options are depend on the machine. If you were lucky enough to have a z10, then you could use the z/VM Evaluation Edition for a quick way to start, or even better, as David suggests, get a "loaner" z/VM. Re: SuSE 10 SP 2 - LPAR Install - Gotcha's?
David, I know I can get a 'loaner' of z/VM. But my z/VM skills are quite old, very rusty, and I was never a (z/)VM Sysprog, anyway. I'm a (z/)VSE Sysprog! I know, there are 'cookbooks' (I have them). And while I wouldn't mind a z/VM trial, I wouldn't want it to go away in a few months, and then not have anything running. I'd rather have it running, sans z/VM, and then add z/VM later. As for running in an LPAR, one must make do with what one has available... Dave Dave Stuart Prin. Info. No, no z/VM, no IFL. (Maybe if I'm good, Santa will ...) Talk to your IBM people. z/VM loaners are easily available if you ask. > I am looking for any pointers, gotcha's I need to watch for, hints/tips, > etc. > > I did search the archives, but it seems that very few people are doing > what I am trying to do. Mostly because the economics of Linux in LPARs doesn't work very well. The virtualization component of z/VM is what makes it interesting. -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390 -- For LINUX-390 subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: INFO LINUX-390 or visit http://www.marist.edu/htbin/wlvindex?LINUX-390
SuSE 10 SP 2 - LPAR Install - Gotcha's?
Morning all, I am preparing to do a new 'bare-metal' (i.e. LPAR) install of Suse 10 SP 2. No, no z/VM, no IFL. (Maybe if I'm good, Santa will ...) I installed SLES 9 SP 3 at one time, with considerable assistance from a Novell engineer (Thanks Mike!), so I have done this once before. But now it's time for SLES 10. I am looking for any pointers, gotcha's I need to watch for, hints/tips, etc. I did search the archives, but it seems that very few people are doing what I am trying to do.
