This is not an nfs server, it is just a server issuing a mount to another
server. It works fine when I do it manually.

Thanks for the responses. I tried putting an NFS mount in boot.local but got an
error:

System Boot Control: Running /etc/init.d/boot.local
mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.

Looks like boot.local is not the last thing executed after all the rc3.d start

I'm having a mind block today.

I have a script (which does an NFS mount) and rather than put it into

has finished executing. I remember doing this before in some kind of boot.
file but I can't remember what it was.

Thanks.

Re: dasdfmt problem when building a new Red Hat guest

2014-11-03 Thread Shedlock, George
Mike,

That is essentially what we did here. We have a rexx exec that finds unused
disk volumes in the VM world, formats them, builds a new VM directory entry in
Dirmaint and then xautologs the system. The system built consists of a base set
of disk volumes that are a "gold" image and adds a variable bunch of extra
volumes for guest-specific user files.

When the new guest is logged on, the variable dasd is formatted with dasdfmt
with the -k option to keep the volumes with the same volser.

We found the same thing here...format once with the -l option works fine,
format the second time with -k and also works. BUT, format the first time with
-k and it fails.

 George,

Yes, I just saw the same behavior. Here's what I did:

-) CPFMTXA'd a 3390-3
-) Added it to DirMaint and attached it to SYSTEM
-) Defined it as a minidisk (400) to a Linux machine (0 END), shut down, logged
off, logged back on and booted Linux
-) Logged on Linux and:
# *lsdasd*
Bus-ID Status Name Device Type BlkSz Size Blocks
==
0.0.0100   active  dasda 94:0ECKD  4096   6831MB1748880
0.0.0200   active  dasdb 94:4ECKD  4096   210MB 54000
0.0.0400   n/f dasdc 94:8ECKD
# *dasdfmt -b 4096 -k -f /dev/dasdc*
dasdfmt: VOLSER not found on device /dev/dasdc

-) Then I kept going and did a dasdfmt with the -l flag and the correct volser
- this succeeded
-) Then I re-ran dasdfmt with the -k flag - this also succeeded.

So it looks like dasdfmt is not recognizing a volser initialized by CPFMTXA,
but is recognizing one formatted by itself. This arguably sounds like a bug to
me.

Re: dasdfmt problem when building a new Red Hat guest

2014-11-03 Thread Shedlock, George
Alan,

The problem with that is that if you don't have the volume with a specific
VOLSER, you can't build the z/VM directory entry and log on the machine to
format the DASD with a proper VOLSER. Catch-22.

There's no need to format a volume twice. If you're going to format a volume
dasdfmt, there's no need to use ICKDSF.

Sounds like your minidisk is 1-END instead of 0-END and so doesn't see a volser
on the minidisk.

dasdfmt problem when building a new Red Hat guest

2014-11-03 Thread Shedlock, George
We are going a little bit crazy trying to figure out a process to initialize
PAV capable volumes for our zLinux guests.

Because we assign disk packs to only one guest we are using the full-pack
minidisk method of enabling HyperPAV (per page 469 in “The Virtualization
Cookbook for IBM z/VM 6.3, RHEL 6.4, and SLES 11 SP3”). The problem that we’re
having is how to hand off the task of initializing the disk volumes for zLinux
with as little chance for error as possible. I don’t want to have our
Linux/Unix admins to have to retype the volsers that we’ve already assigned to
the disks. The chances of a finger check are too great and any errors are a
significant problem since we depend (as does zVM) on volsers being unique
across the system.

When we create the guest we format and label the volumes using ICKDSF.

According to the Cookbook one of the first steps in making the disk available
to zLinux is to run a dasdfmt command against the disk.

According to “Device Drivers, Features, and Commands on Red Hat Enterprise
Linux 7”, dasdfmt has an option –k

-k or --keep_volser
keeps the volume serial number when writing the volume label (see VOLSER).
Keeping the volume serial number is useful, for example, if the volume serial
number was written with a z/VM tool and should not be overwritten.

However, whenever we try to run dasdfmt with that option we get the following
error

[root@dcvml29 ~]# dasdfmt -b 4096 -y -v -k -f /dev/dasdf
dasdfmt: VOLSER not found on device /dev/dasdf

I’ve tried various kinds of formats

CPVOL FMT MODE(ESA) UNIT(7625) VFY(0X0400) VOLID(VH2905) -
RANGE(0,10016)

INIT UNIT(7625) VFY(VH2905) VOLID(VH2905) -
CYLRANGE(0,10016) -
PURGE NOVALIDATE VTOC(000,01,14) INDEX(015,00,15)

And using CPFMTXA but nothing I do writes a VOLSER that RedHat will find on the
volume.

The Cookbook implies (around that same page) but doesn’t come out directly to
say that –k doesn’t work as designed. Do you know of any way that we can
format a DASD volume on zVM and have the VOLSER be acceptable to zLinux?

Any insights are most appreciated.

DB2 Performance Questions

2011-08-01 Thread Shedlock, George
We are conducting a proof of concept for one of our divisions. This includes
DB/2 9.7 and Suse 10 SP 3 with CKD dasd.

The first opportunity is the defines of tablespaces. In our x86 environment,
this runs in less that 3-4 minutes (yes, there are a lot of tables). In our
z/Linux guest that same set of defined runs in about 3-4 HOURS!. The only thing
we have seen as far as activity is a very large number of disk I/O's to dasd.
The tables define approx. 800-900 GB. What we think we are seeing is that the
table spaces are being formatted.

We have tried the "no file system caching" option on the define, but is flagged
as an invalid option. IBM is saying that this is the default, but after the
tables are defined and we look at the tables, we see that the option is turned
on. If we then try to turn it off, it is again flagged as an invalid option.

Are there any other options that we can use?

Yep.  What Mark said.

To try and boost your comfort level, know that many of us regularly
load both versions of many libraries. I have yet to experience any
problem from that because the 64-bit flavor is always reliably
addressed along a different file path.

32-bit programs run just fine on a 64-bit Linux. I find this to be
true for both PC and "z". What a 32-bit program cannot do is load a
64-bit shared library. So you need the relevant 32-bit shared libs if
you're running a 32-bit app.  Common practice.

32 bit and 64 bit libraries of the same product

2011-05-25 Thread Shedlock, George
Does anyone know if I can install both the 64 bit and 32 bit versions of the
same library on a given guest?

The case in point is a particular vendor product. Their installer is a 32 bit
application and is looking for various libraries in /lib when the library is
already installed in /lib64. They are asking us to install the 32 bit version
of another software product so their installer can see the libraries.

Any comments? Can we even install both versions at the same time? If we can,
will it present any other interesting issues?

Hmm, that number is retrieved by this code snipped:

rc = stsi(info, 1, 2, 2);
if (rc == -ENOSYS)
goto out;
rc = 0;
*capability = info->capability;

struct sysinfo_1_2_2 {
char format;
char reserved_0[1];
unsigned short acc_offset;
char reserved_1[24];
unsigned int secondary_capability;
unsigned int capability;
unsigned short cpus_total;
unsigned short cpus_configured;
unsigned short cpus_standby;
unsigned short cpus_reserved;
unsigned short adjustment[0];
};

It always reports the primary capability. We'll investigate.

Re: BMC BladeLogic [PUBLIC]

This is the information I have so far:
BL Server - no way, no how for Z
BL Client - The 7.5 client works for SLES up to 10 SP 2 (verified) and
reportedly SLES 10 SP3 works as well. The Agent WILL NOT WORK for SLES 11 (any
flavor). We are waiting for word from BMC as to what release will support SLES
11. As of the announced release 8.0, it will not be supported.

For RH, the news is even worse. The latest version of RH that is supported is
RHEL 4.0.

Re: Dynamicallhy Changing Linux Guest Network

2009-08-24 Thread Shedlock, George
Mark,

As I said in one of my earlier posts, I have been using Rexx for a lot of
testing. I have implemented a script similar to what Nick has. In my case we
have a provisioning job that, when run, places the configuration file that it
used to create the guest on the 191 disk. My Rexx script runs in
/etc/init.d/boot early enough in the process to change the network parameters
and other configuration parameters during the initial startup. I can clean it
up a bit if you are interested in that also.

Re: Sample REXX with cmsfs usage

2009-08-20 Thread Shedlock, George
Here is another method to find a device number:

EnableADisk: /* Enable my 191 (A) disk*/
'chccwdev -e 191 > /dev/null 2>&1'
If RC <> 0 Then Do
Call LogCmd 'Unable to enable 191 disk. RC from chccwdev =' RC
Return 2
End
'cat /proc/dasd/devices | grep "0.0.0191" | rxqueue'
Parse Pull rec
Adisk = '/dev/' || word(rec,7)
Call LogCmd "Adisk is:" Adisk
Return

Here are a couple of other options for reading a file:

/* Read a standard linux file  */
'cat /etc/HOSTNAME | rxqueue'
Parse UPPER Pull rec

Another one:

GetDefaultConfig:/* Read the default config file from the 191 disk */
TargetParm = 'DEFAULT.CONFIG'
'cmsfslst -d' Adisk '| grep DEFAULT | grep CONFIG > /dev/null'
If RC <> 0 Then Do
Call LogCmd TargetParm "not found on 191 minidisk. Ignoring"
Return
End

'cmsfscat -a -d' Adisk TargetParm 'grep ^.| cut -f2 -d. | rxqueue'
Do Queued()
Parse Pull rec
/* Do something useful with the record */
Call LogCmd 'DefaultConfig:' rec
End
Return

Waiting for the udev event queue to run empty is a safer way to wait for
the device to become online and available to Linux.
Depending on the version of your Linux you may use:
'udevadm settle'
or
'udevsettle'

> file = '/proc/dasd/devices'
>

>line = strip(linein(file))
>if length(line) = 0 then leave

Not sure, but this looks like an endless loop with busy waiting,
possibly eating unnecessary CPU cycles.
Chccwdev already loops (CPU friendly) to see if the device comes online
within some timeout and finally reports the outcome with an exit
errorlevel, that you may evaluate above to decide on continuation.

> 'chccwdev -d 191'

Here you could do "udevadm settle" again just to be sure that no events
caused by setting the device offline are pending when your script exits.

'cmsfscat -d /dev/'disk '-a' filename

In the SLES 10 SDK for zSeries there is a REXX rpm. (Regina 3.3).

I made also an own build with Regina 3.4 (latest version on
regina-rexx.sourceforge). This worked also very well.

I would like to support the request to see REXX in the SLES 11 distribution.

The SDK was slimmed down quite a bit for SLE11. It had become a bit of a
dumping ground for software that people thought might be useful to our
customers, but that wasn't going to be supported. Beginning with SLE11, there
is an "extras" channel for non-SDK software that won't be supported either, but
right now there's not much in it. I don't know what selection criteria will be
used for that channel. I don't believe Regina is there at the moment.

Since neither the SDK nor the extras channel will contain supported software,
you might as well just build Regina from source. I'll ask around internally to
see if I can find out what sorts of things will wind up in extras.

MIDAWs support and SLES9 & SLES10 under z/VM 5.3

2009-06-08 Thread Shedlock, George
I am sending this for a friend who seems to be having difficulty posting it
himself.

 We are looking at activating MIDAWs support on one of our disk subsystems.
The disk subsystem is split between z/OS and z/VM (5.3 RSU 0802). I see that
z/VM support MIDAWs for guest operating systems. My question is does SLES9 or
SLES10 have any support in it for MIDAW. I did search the Novel website but
did not get any hits.

applications. The scripts I have are in this format:

#! /bin/bash
set -x
case "$1" in
'start')
/bin/su - udbdb1 -c "/home/udbdb1/sqllib/adm/db2start"
;;
'stop')
/bin/su - udbdb1 -c "/home/udbdb1/sqllib/adm/db2stop"
;;
'restart')
stop
  start
;;
*)
echo $"Usage: $0 {start|stop|restart}"
exit 1
;;
Esac

This is failing because the environment variables are not set up correctly
(-1390 reason 3 return code). Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I have found a way to initiate this with:
sudo -u udbdb1 -i /etc/init.d/db2 start

The problem with this is that I cannot find a way to implement this in the
/etc/sudoers file so a non-privileged user can run the command.

Any suggestions on how to make either of these methods work will be greatly
appreciated.

Thank you everyone. There was indeed an error in specifying a nameserver. It
was an incorrect IP address.

I've seen this happen when your DNS isn't set up right, or the system cannot
reach the DNS server for some reason.

Excessive time for login

2009-03-20 Thread Shedlock, George
We are running SUSE SLES 10 SP 2. When we login to the server via SSH, our pam
module that validates the userid against Active Directory completes with a
successful logon (as seen on the syslog), but it is some 40-50 seconds before
we see the logon prompt to the user. Can anyone suggest a course of action to
isolate and resolve this delay? Pointers to a logic flow of the modules
involved would be helpful.

Re: Problems using PARMFILE and layer2 support

2009-02-13 Thread Shedlock, George
We have installed a SLES 10 SP 2 with a layer=2 vswitch. One thing that I
noticed, but did not spend a great deal of time researching, is that once any
version of SLES is IPL'd, there are certain remnants in the system that prevent
it from IPL'ing clean a second time. We got around this by doing a full logoff
and logon (z/VM) and everything magically gets cleaned up.

Ok, I have to ask... Why are you being asked to change a virtual device
address? If someone came up with a new standard that says "all guest's NIC
should be at virtual address 1234" then that's probably a good thing. If it's
for some other reason, then perhaps not.

what version of SUSE?
for openers look at /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-qeth-bus-ccw-0.0.0340 - it
will need to be renamed.

Adam,

I don't think it is the mac address since I see:

qeth: MAC address 02:ad:c3:10:10:95 successfully registered on device eth0

I have to assume that I am getting to the VSWITCH and that nothing is blocking

How very strange.

I'm going to guess that the answer is in the MAC address specification. You
gave it 101095. Is it perhaps expecting colons between the bytes? Does it
want you to specify all six bytes, even though the first three are defined by
CP?

I don't remember, and I don't have a Layer 2 guest LAN/VSWITCH handy to test on
right now. Does anyone remember off-hand?

Re: Filesystems and z/VM disks

2008-11-21 Thread Shedlock, George
To start with, I am new to z/Linux. I have worked with z/VM for more years than
I want to remember. I know about mini-disks. What I would like to know is how
is a /dev/ mapped to which mini-disk.

For the second part, I am looking for a tutorial that will explain which
filesystems should be on which devices. I know the standard answer is "it
depends". I am possibly looking at sharing some of the filesystems between z/VM
guests.

I have inherited the support of a number of penguins and amtrying to make some
sense out of what I am looking at.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking for here. Could you expand on that a
little?

Again, I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Optimize in what way? What are
you looking to achieve?

Filesystems and z/VM disks

2008-11-21 Thread Shedlock, George
Does anyone have or can point me to a detailed discussion of how the z/VM
minidisk's relate to z/Linux devices? I would also like to find something that
will outline a procedure to optimize the placement of the various filesystems
on those devices.

The appliance is not set up to work with Layer 2 VSWITCHes by default. Follow
Marcy's advice to change that, or couple the NIC to a Layer 3 VSWITCH.

Re: Install problem with SLES 10 on Vswitch

2008-11-18 Thread Shedlock, George
I am not sure if this is the same problem as the original poster indicated.
When I IPL the SLES 10 SP2 starter system I get the following messages:

qeth: loading qeth S/390 OSA-Express driver

This IPL was performed after I issued the command:

SET VSWITCH ADCVS01 GRANT DCVML98
Command complete

Previous posts seemed to indicate that there was a mis-match in layer=2 vs non
layer=2. I have confirmed that we are running with layer=2.

Further in the IPL process I see these messages:

It's unlikely that his authorization to couple to the VSWITCH goes away between
phase 1 and phase 2 of the install.

I went to the Regina site and downloaded the source RPM -
Regina-REXX-3.4-1.src.rpm Use RPM to install the source rpm -Evh
Regina-REXX-3.4-1.src.rpm  This will create
/usr/src/packages/SOURCES/Regina-REXX-3.4.tar.gz
cd to that directory
tar -xzf Regina-REXX-3.4.tar.gz - this will create
/usr/src/packages/SOURCES/Regina-3.4 - this is the source directory cd
to that directory ./configure make make install

For rexx - download THE-3.3B3.tar.gz
>From /usr/src/packages/SOURCES  untar THE-3.3B3.tar.gz this will create
/usr/src/packages/SOURCES/THE-3.3B3
cd to that directory
./configure --with-rexx=regina --with-ncurses make make install

The whys are pretty straightforward.
1. If your root file system fills up (runs out of space) your system
dies.
2. Up until recently, resizing your root file system required
application downtime.
3. Having everything in your root file system prevents potential sharing
of file systems across guests.

The hows are also pretty straightforward.
1. During the installation process, use the various "expert" modes to
set it up. (It really doesn't require an expert.) 2. After
installation, look at http://linuxvm.org/Info/HOWTOs/movefs.html

It's far easier to do it during installation. It's also far easier to
do it during installation via AutoYaST or kickstart.

Please keep in mind that this question is coming from someone relatively
ignorant of z/Linux and it's care and feeding.

I there some cookbook or other FM that would help me to understand the
how's and why's of splitting up the filesystems onto various volume
groups and mountpoints?

If you've already broken out your other file systems, as Pieter talked
about, then something is wrong. My root file systems are typically
300-400MB in size, and are less than 50% full.
# df -h
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/dasda1   388M   97M  271M  27% /
/dev/mapper/vg1-home   97M  4.2M   88M   5% /home
/dev/mapper/vg1-opt74M  7.7M   63M  12% /opt
/dev/mapper/vg1-tmp   291M   17M  260M   6% /tmp
/dev/mapper/vg1-usr   642M  492M  118M  81% /usr
/dev/mapper/vg1-var   295M   90M  190M  33% /var

Now, that is an extremely stripped down installation (only 260 RPMs), so
don't take the various file system sizes as guidelines of any kind.
But, what gets dumped into / doesn't change much with additional
packages being installed.

It looks like at least the first part of the 150 disk is OK, since the
boot loader was able to present the menu. The error message after that
seems to indicate it can't find the kernel to continue.

Make sure you were able to download the complete files. Non-compliant
web browsers such as IE have caused a number of people problems in the
past. When you uploaded the .vmarc files to z/VM, what were the file
attributes? RECFM, LRECL, number of blocks, etc.?
