You got me. I've never seen this one before. Whenever I've had a
device problem it's been because they weren't made. I made them and
everything was all right. I'm beginning to think that I made a mistake
in recompiling the kernel.

Did you use MAKEDEV? It is a little daunting unless you're pretty good
at perl but I managed to trudge my way through it. In my case I needed
to make up to hda16 and it would only go to hda8. I finally found an #

We just bought 2 of the new 36 GB LVD SCSI drives and put them in our Linux box
at work. The goal is/was to stripe the two of them into a nice fat 72 GB
partition for a large database. The problem is that FDISK won't create a
partition bigger than 24 million blocks for some reason. I can't imagine
what magic number this blows away but whatever it is, we hit it. Right
now I have the drives cut into 2 18 GB partitions per drive and then I
stripped over that. That seems to work but I know that it isn't optimal.
Does anyone have any clues? I've searched for the fdisk source one web sites
hoping there might be a new one but I can't even find it anywhere. I didn't
think SCSI had these problems?

Also, does anyone know if the RAID setup in RedHat 6.0 is safe and stable. I
had a heck of a time getting it to work but it does seem to stripe the 4 18GB
partitions ok.

Thanks for any help,

Dave

I am using redhat 5.2 with the kernel 2.0.36

I am having trouble with my sound card.
It is a ESS with full Adlib, Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster Pro
compatibility as well as plug and pray.

This information came from my windows setup:
ES1869 Plug and Play AudioDrive

IRQ: 05
I/O: 0220h-022FH
I/O: 0388h-038Bh
I/O: 0330h-0331h

When I try to set it up I get this error:

Can anyone help?

I am new to linux so please excuse my lack of knowledge.

Hi there

I've got a UMAX Astra 1220S Scanner connected through a SCSI Card (generic NCR
5380/53c400). I compiled the kernel (2.0.36) with SCSI-Support (built in the
kernel) SCSI-disk-Support (for an external ZIP-Drive) as a modul, SCSI
generic support and the SCSI low level driver for generic NCR 5380/53c400.

When I built support for the SCSI-Card Support in the kernel, the system
stopped when it came to recognize the SCSI-Card, so I built it as a module and
loaded the module with insmod, and the system stopped again.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks in advance

How effective the drive's on board cache will be is determined by
YOUR data access characteristics, most tests do not use
YOUR data access characteristics; so, draw your own conclusions...

Large cache helps when most data access is sequential, so that the
read ahead of full/multiple tracks will actually bring in what you
need next. Also, a larger cache allows things that will will be
re-read frequently to stay in the cache. This is especially useful
in a multi-tasking environment where competing tasks might cause
 the smaller cache to thrash.

For SCSI, the large cache *also* help very random-access. Just
make sure you use tagged queuing. The drive will then be able to
read the next sector(s) (from any place on disk) into its cache
while the previous one is transferred across the scsi bus.

It is not that simple. They are afraid their buyers might find out that
while celeron isn't as good as xeon, it isn't too far behind. So
the celeron has better price/performance than xeon, and it makes sense
using, say, 5 celeron servers instead of 3 xeon servers. Cheaper
*and* better performance if it is ok to split the load over more
machines.
That's certainly fine for file servers.

This company has over the years turned out some of the best
DOS/Windows based developement tools since the early 80s. Like many
other great tools developers they have been beaten down by Microsoft
in the Win32 arena. Let them know that Linux *IS* a great platform to
sell serious professional software development tools for.
These guys have the resources to turn out great tools in a much
shorter time period than Open Source programmers can, plus the
commercial support corporations require. This lack of these tools is
hurting Linux with professional UNIX (all flavors free and commercial)
developers who are accustomed to hard core professional development
tools.

Gene Heskett sends Greetings to Marc SCHAEFER;

I found it late last night on one of my many cd's, but haven't attempted
a compile yet. And I finally did get bru2k to work last night late.
What did I do? Damnifiknow other than a couple of reboots, one of them
a full powerdown. The backup log showed 118 instances of an 'internal
bug in namelink' early on, but was otherwise uneventfull. And, it
apparently only takes time to update the progress bar while verifying as
it was only done once at about .01% done during the backup itself.

And while I didn't hear the drive doing any little micro-backups like
it did on the Amiga, this one took about an hour more for about 300 megs
less data Considering the amiga is a 19 bogomips machine, and the
other box is a 799 bogomips machine, I figured it would go faster that
_that_. It also did not eject the tape when it was done, so it sat
there about an hour before I woke up again. Thats a major head wear bug
IMNSHO.

OTOH, it actually worked, so I'm gonna paint that one on the wall, and
maybe even price the full version.

There are several little bugfixes you can dl from their (bru's) site
but I haven't installed them yet. Many of the bugfixes are to linux
utils, and one to the xbru interface. I note the current version
installed can't find netscape to show its help even if its already
running...

 MS write(1, "Tue Jul 13 10:05:09 MEST 1999\n", 30Tue Jul 13 10:05:09

Hi,

I just purchased the the RedHat 6.0 core system upgrade. Unfortunately,
it did not come with a boot floppy. That seems pretty lame, since in the
installation manual it says that if I am running an Intel based system,
which I am, then I will need to use a boot floppy. Well, I had a boot
floppy from my previous install of RedHat 5.0, so I though that I would
"get lucky". BIG mistake. I got through most of the install but it died
at the point where it has to install the boot loader. I can still boot
up but none of the Xwindows functions work, I suspect because the video
drivers were improperly set.

Does anyone know whewre I can get a boot floppy for RedHat 6.0 and try
this whole thing again?

Thanks

Or you can run xf86config. If you really want to run install from the

 Tom,

Using an ftp client (or, gag, a web browser) go to ftp.cdrom.com, then
 from the pub/linux/RedHat/linux/redhat/redhat-6.0/i386/dosutils,
 download the file rawrite.exe

 Then, from the pub/linux/RedHat/linux/redhat/redhat-6.0/i386/images

drive, and run rawrite. Tell it the location on your hd of boot.img,
then the location of your diskette (it should ask you that) and it
should then write the boot disk for you.

Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 19:35:31 +0100

Hi,

I'm running a Cyrix PR166+, with 48Mb ram. Kernel 2.2.10, though
tried several, including 2.0.34.

When I play or encode an MP3, it crashes after a seemingly random
amount of time with a floating point exception. I've tried lowering
the memory speed in the bios, turning off internal and external
caches, limited memory usage - everything. It doesn't occur
when I use FPU emulation, but it won't play in realtime if I use
that.

Last year, the fan went and the CPU got a bit hot for a while. Does
anyone have any ideas what's going on here - I can't find any info at all.

Cheers
Pete

I'm not sure what chipset that board has, but I'm guessing that it will
allow you to run the RAM asynchronsly with the CPU bus. I.E. You can
run the RAM at 66MHz (the fastest it will do) and the CPU and L2 cache
at 100MHz. If this board can't do that, find another one that can.
This will allow you to keep your existing RAM, and get the fastest
socket 7 CPU on the market. I'd check www.tomshardware.com (getting a
little too comertial, but still a good source) or anandtech.com. They
are great references for hardware.

So my question is, what is the fastest CPU that can run reliably with
my
 existing simms?

I am looking at a Tyan 1590S socket seven motherboard with either a
233MMX
Pentium or AMD 350. I would underclock the CPU's if necessary.

In the future, I will upgraded to faster memory. For now, I am trying
to
 keep the costs down.

Hey there, does anyone know what happened to Juergen Fischer, the author
of the aha152x SCSI driver? The latest version is from 1996 and doesn't
have synchronous SCSI support working. Has anyone looked into what it
would take to get this finished?

Sorry for the long message, but it should contain the answers to any
questions anyone has about what I'm trying to do. Any help appreciated.

I have an Ambicom 80002t ethernet card which is a 10Base-t card, which is

is supported. I'm attempting to follow the directions in section 6 of the

that the card services module is compiled.

If I try to just insert the card, I get a single

AJN This is to let the community know that as of 16:25 on July 13,
AJN 1999 the zilog controler version of logitech's FirstMouse+ PS/2
AJN (known as S48-OEM) has been conquered. The scroll wheel can

AJN A utility has been written, but is not ready for public
AJN consuption, which will enable the wheel so that it registers
AJN using the standard MouseManPlusPS2 protocol under Xwindows. In
AJN addition there is a diagnositic utility that will allow for
AJN trapping and interpretation of mouse events.

AJN I will release both of these shortly along with a mini-howto.
AJN When things are ready I will notify the community with offical

Actually, "X" is the same (150kb/sec) but it's now MAX "X". An "up-to"
statement, such as "you could win up to $25,000,000". The drive can actually
get 24X at one position on the disc - but at the other end it may be 11X.
Some companies such as Plextor calculate the "average" sustained transfer
you can expect - their "17/40" drive averages out to 27X.

it gets messed up enough to dump me into a single-user shell to continue
manually. My box did that once after a trip-over-the-power-cord event.

At University it wasn't unknown for savvy people to hit STOP-A as a
