I have to disagree.

1. Some of us may think that there's no point in discussing the issue in
public. Alot of noise can be generated, but the buttom line is that without
JBA's cooperation all talks are futile. I was quite happy there wasn't that
much noise.

2. I am one of the maintainers of the old and new website. I have to say
that I was very very happy by the ammount of help and cooperation I'm
getting. Its getting better all the time.

In the past 90% of the work was done by Ira and me. Now I'm doing some work
on the website, OmerM is arranging the news and doing some maintainance,
AlexSh is doing mirrors, Choo helped install the server in Haifa, Shlomif
helped with mysql and php and perl, Ilya did maintainance, Ira did lots of
maintainance and helped on the domain issues, moshe is doing the lectures,
Tzafrir is sending me bug reports, all is great!

It is customary for sites to have small group of people who do things and
the rest use them, its silly any other way. I feel very good knowing that if
something needs to be done - I can find someone to do it.

So to conclude:

Ira - you are not alone - we are right behind you, all helping out as much
as you can. If you need something done - everyone is here to help.

and also:

Great job IGLU! Things are going great and will get better.

Thanks,
Chen Shapira.

Lotus Notes is much like a Iraqi automobile with a built-in coffee machine.
There are 100 other automobiles on the market, all better, significantly
more stable (at least from my experience) and with 1/100th the TCO and
downtime (Linux/*niX email solutions, even M$-Exchange), and there are 100
other coffee machines, all making coffee at least as good as this one (as
far as databases in Lotus go).
But THIS is the ONLY car that boasts a coffee machine. After having seen the
amount of money our company bleeds for having made the mistake of buying it,
after comparing downtime to what I got used to in the Unix world, I'd
seriously consider using paper snailmail before incorporating it in any
serious organization.

. My 2 cents..

Oh, almost forgot. The human engineering of the Lotus client was likely made
by a lobotomized retard chimpansee. Some of our IT managers still find it
difficult to set up a workstation after having worked with this software for
over a year. And they're *not that* braindead.

My theory says people buy it because it's expensive.

Nobody claimed that OpenMail is better than Notes. The man only
asked if there is an Exchange compliant for Linux; He didn't ask for
competitors, and even not for better tools. Only for compliants.
This is why Ira responded with the OpenMail, and my contribution to
the discussion was the exact name of the software.

And - yes, Notes/Domino is a very powerful software (I know it - I'm

I am not the cable modem owner, just saw it at frien's house. It did give
unstable performance. I believe things will change once they go to
production mode (in bezeq's case, pilot mode was better than

Hi Noam,
Install RH6.2 without the network card.
Make sure you can reboot the computer.
Add the network card physically to the computer.
Configure the card by adding a line like "alias eth0 3c509" or whatever
the module is for your card to /etc/conf.modules

IGLU

2000-08-15 Thread Gilad Ben-Yossef

Ladies, Gents and that newbie from Alpha Xi Ceti who registered
yesterday,

I'm please to announce the *official* forming of IGLU - the Israeli
Group of Linux Users. This organization is a not for profit organization
that will be registered with Rasham ha Amutut in a few days.

Anyone interested to join the Amuta must:
1. Send me his name, email, phone number and ID.
2. Be prepared to pay the member fees, when and if it will be so decided
(I'm thinking either 20 NIS a month OR performing some sort of service
for the Amuta - so that money won't stop people from joining, what do
you think?)

Joining the Amuta will give you a voting right on Amuta official
meetings.
The Amuta will have at least one such meeting per year.

5 members of the Amuta will form the IGLU Cabal - the managing board of
the Amuta. They will be the persons in charge of day to day matters
between Amuta official meetings. This Cabal will be chosen once a year
in Amuta official meetings. Until the first meeting the Cabal will be
made from Ira, Chen, Eli Marmor and YBA, if they choose to join,
otherwise will make something up. The Amuta will appoint from time to
time additional officer to take care of specific business. I'll guess
I'll shove my snout into things too ;-)

The target of the Amuta will be to form a legal body that will be able
to back up and represent the actions of the free software / open source
/ linux community in Israel. Despite the name, I think we should cover
all free software/ OSS, including things like Qmail and BSDs.

The Amuta will try to push forward the use and development of Linux and
other free software in Israel. The Amuta will try to demonstrate the
benefits of using free software and linux and present it as a possible
solution to the growing problem of technological gap in Israel between
the "Have" and "Have-nots".

The Amuta will try its best to assist all the community activity, both
present and future, but it should be understood that the Amuta does NOT
come to replace any activity organizers but only to help them by
providing an "official" legal body that they can use as a cover for
their activities (donations, dealing with vendors etc.) as long as those
activities are lawful and in the charter of the Amuta.

The Amuta will do it's best to let anyone and everyone enjoy the
activities it sponsors, without regard to sex, race, creed or editor
preference ;-) including people with disabilities.

OK, now it's your turn.

Also, if anyone knows an accountant that is willing to do us a favor and
take care of the money side of
business pro bono it'll be great. We already have a lawyer.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE follow up this email on [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing
list only and not on Linux-il. thanks.

Try a different type of network card. My experience with some of the
cheaper Realteks is that they don't work or work but accumulate errors
after 10 hours or so. At least get another card on loan to test with.

2000-08-15 Thread Ben-Nes Michael

Because no one can supply high speed internet now, because of legal
problems.

The main problem is that bezeq does not accept nor unbuilding nor
unbounding.
Bezeq specifically told that she want to supply internet contents because
she will get revenue of thousands and not of hundreds.

Until this plot wont resolve there will be only test in israel.

Stas, I think you have your facts wrong on this. The Tevel experiment with
cable modems started several years ago, and certainly predated the creation of
Yes (the sattelite company). I remember discussing this with my sysadmin in
the open university, something like three years ago, wondering whether he
could pull a string or two and help me get into the experiment, being a
Macintosh user. At the time, the only discussion was whether cables were
better, or xDSL, and there was no sattelite option in site. There was also a
company that tried to create a net based on free wireless frequencies, and
went broke. Then we had a sattelite experiment in the open university, and as
far as I know, it was the first such experiment in Israel, and it did not
involve "yes", but rather built on the sattelite infrastructure the open
university already had for its interactive classes.

Its fully compatible with MS exchange (and I mean fully compatible! it got some

You might also want to take a look at: TradeServer -

o.k. I'll rephrase it :

I need a solution similar to ms-Exchange ( does not have to be
complient/compatible)
I need the functionality of exchange ( or similiar ) on a linux server
and MS clients ( preferably also unix clients )

thanks

Yes, that was the impresion I got from reading their glossies as well.
The truth is rather different though - they don't support any scheduling
ability of Exchange/Outlook and their Linux client is horrible (etscape
is MUCH better). Which leaves you with a huge bloated beast that does
something a good IMAP/POP/LDAP/SMTP servers combination will do.

This at leat was my impression when installing it. It is possible I
missed something completly, in this case I would be very interested to
know - I'm looking for a non Exchange Outlook supporting Groupware
solution myself.

That one looked much better, although it seems the Linux client and the
Outlook client can't do scheduling together which sucks.

relay in sendmail 8.9.3

2000-08-15 Thread support

Hi list

I have tried to disable the "allowed relay" feature on sendmail 8.9.3
(FR-o /etc/relay-domains) and couldn't do it.

Can I set any command on the sendmail.cf to allow relaying from
everybody.

p.s. - I now it's wrong to allow this feature.

RE: relay in sendmail 8.9.3

2000-08-15 Thread Oved Blass

To allow relaying from any host, add the following line to the .m4
configuration file:

FEATURE(`promiscuous_relay')

(It is not recommended to edit the sendmail.cf file directly. On RedHat you
can find the file that compiles to sendmail.cf at
/usr/lib/sendmail-cf/cf/redhat.mc,
for example m4 /usr/lib/sendmail-cf/cf/redhat.mc >/etc/sendmail.cf)

Look also at: http://www.sendmail.org/m4/anti-spam.html

You might find there other ways to configure sendmail that will not
compromise the security of your host, for example relaying based on the
sender e-mail address or the MX DNS record.

These days it is very difficult to allow anyone to relay via your mail
server. Very soon spammers who scan the Internet will find your site and
will use your e-mail server.

Is that the case that appeared in the error message? not
./../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA ?

Is the XF86_SVGA package installed?
what is pointed by: /etc/X11/X (this should point to the X server)?
How did you configure X?

as far as i understood, cable connection in general uses shared media
(both upstream and downstream). what's more, their normal upstream
connection is apprently VERY limited in its capacity, as cable T.V. was
originaly meant for one-way communicatinos only.

nonstop claims they will gurantee at least 05.Mbps for the downstream
connection (which is about 4 times faster then a dual channel ISDN
connection) - i wonder how this will work when their network becomes
loaded (i.e. when you and all your neighbours from the block connect
simultaneously over the shared media).

except that for ADSL, the link from the local loop back to bezeq's system
could potentially be much wider then that of the cables system, and is
not using shared media.

that only during the experimentation. wait till they start giving a real

2000-08-15 Thread Mike Almogy

Hi.

There is a company calls NetRiality who has a product that can control the
bandwidth limit of WAN interfaces.
If i were the cable company then i could limit traffic by IP address and
give each one 0.5 MB guarantee,
However, i donoo how much capacity their backbone to the clients has. It's
sound nice to have a guarantee of 0.5 MB but if the whole line is 10 MB then
no more then 20 users on the same time can use it.

I think that only the future can tell us if this internet connection can
really work.

True. Upstream is a multiple-access channel and a slow one.
Downstream is where the band (tens of megabits per sec per TV
channel. Of course a few 1000's of users will share such a channel).

I wouldn't count on that :)

When they finally do that [This will happen when the Bezeq Law will
be changed and that will happen when the government finally got
Bezeq sold for a good price], they will let each user choose his
ISP. Your data will be tunneled to that ISP and from there - to the
Internet.

Oh, by the way, when they finally offer this as a commercial service
it'll almost certainly be handled by Tevel Telecomm (that's part of
the cable companies merge).

Hi,

Ahhm, I'm affraid that you're not reading the docs dear..

You're using VMWare, so you'll need a special tools that comes with the
vmware - check the docs..

As for the SVGA server - if you don't have it - simply put the redhat cd
in, mount it, goto the /mnt/cdrom/Redhat/RPMS - and type:

rpm -Uvh *SVGA*

This should install it..

There is a special XF86Config file for vmware. Again - please check the
docs.
