Tricky. Set up an HTTP or FTP server, and connect to it using the
network install boot disk of some distro.
Personally, I suggest you compile netcat statically (so it has no
external dependancies). Get it to your computer using FTP. Then, format
and mount the partitions you need, cd to the proposed new root, and do
nc -l -p 12345 | tar xvzf -. On the other computer, do nc
172.24.15.132 12345 image.tgz. This way you won't need temporary
storage for the tar file, which may prove more than your computer can
hold (both tar and extracted images).

also, is there a way to hibernate my thinkpad 755cx with linux? it will probably
need a fat16 on the first partition and the file hibernate.sys but there is
still a need to some software to activate it.

Try http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/. It's a great site. If you find out
new insights, you can contribute your feedback as well.

IMHO release kazit 2, before kde3.2 with kde3.1, since there are many problems
regarding hebrew there. You may want to do kazit 2.1 with kde3.2 but IMHO
kde3.2 will not be really do your remaster until kde3.2.2 or kde3.2.3.
Stick to kde3.1.X.

On October 11th 2003, the Kazit Project released the first beta release of
 Kazit2.

Kazit started as a Hebrew-localized KnoppixKDE remaster
 (http://www.kde.org/il/knoppixkde/).
however , KnoppixKDE is no longer under development.

 Kazit2 is a remaster based on Knoppix3.3
It's purpose is to provide a Knoppix version with full Hebrew support.

 (*) FEATURES:

 * All locale setting were set to work as UTF8
 * Hebrew language packages installed
 * Improved keyboared layout switcher
 * Open office upgraded to version 1.1 (no language packages)
 * HSpell installed using 'multispell' for both Hebrew and English spell
 checking
 * Works with Culmus fonts by default
 * Added a textual menu on startup for choosing between full Hebrew or
 Hebrew enabled modes
 * Several Hebrew related packages were installed: fribidi, bidiv, hebcal,
 qtzmanim, switcher
 * Some tools (iwiz, my 012 PPTP script) for dialling PPTP/ADSL
 * the 'Frozen bubble' game was not removed this time :D

Grab Tom's Root-Boot floppy. Has nc, tar, relatively good network card
support (including laptops). a minimal dhcp client is included.
it even has 'man'. Should have nfs support, but I never tried it.

It doesn't support reiserfs, though. ext3 will have to do...

2003-10-12 Thread Amichai Rotman
Hi Gang,

I moved to another apartment, so i have to get rid of some books I no longer

Inside the Window$ 95 File System / Stan Mitchell / 1997 / O'Reilly Nutshell
Handbook

A note about the last two on the list: I am guessing someone will be
interested in them for reverse-engineering purposes... I wouldn't bother you
with such books otherwise.

Please contact me 0ff-list for more details. I think you can find details
about the books on-line.

All books are in mint condition.

All are for giveaway - no charge, unless any of you have other books he/she
would like to get rid of. Donations will be appreciated too.

Some of the books were given to me by others who left the country, so if any
of you can tell me one or some of these books are absolute and belong in the
garbage, let me know.

Thank you,

Amichai Rotman

Re: [OT] Giveaway Books

I suggest visiting http://www.bookcrossing.com and registering these
books. Then you can come to a BookCrossing event (like the one we had in the
August Penguin 2003) and swap books with others, or even just donate your
books.

oopsi, it seems that i didn't change one important thing in knoppix-autocong,
the one that genetares the fstab file. :-|
So vfat and ntfs will not be mounted as utf8 ... but now i fixed it and
patched knoppix-autoconfig once again :-\

Anyway, it'll be fixed in beta2.

Here are my observations of you remaster:

 general:

 * Thin-Keramic is nice, but keramic is better if you want a better unified

i wish KDE would switch to thin-keramic, it looks much better :\
anyways, you're right about this...and i think thin-keramic has some issues.

 * qt3.2 has some issues, for example look in kicker for the hide buttons,
also in kde3.2 there are issues with khtml, i could not test them since i
had problems with iwiz, downgrade to qt3.1 please.

The hide buttons look like that because of thinKeramic - i set the flat panels
option. what other issues does qt3.2 have?

 * iwiz should be in configuration menu
 * iwiz should run as root (sudo or whatever?)
 * iwiz does not run even in root, since it needs to wite in RO dirs:

it's kinda hard for me to test since i don't have to use it to connect.
BTW, what kind of connection do you have?

i have not tested all this iwiz stuff yet, and i don't really have a way to
test it. but I'll see what i can do. That why i didn't put a shortcut on
desktop. because it's still experimental. There are links for it in the menu
i think, generated by my Debian packing , in 'Applications'.

 * localized graphics maybe?

what do you mean ?

 * touch /etc/modules/2.4.22-xfs... and friends (they are older then other
 files)

OK. i know about this.

 * can you map the win key to the kemnu? (mdk does that)

do you know how to do it in Knoppix?

 * please add gtkgraph, or better program (kde based a BIG plus!)

OK.

things that may be removed without any problems:

huh?

 * where is the show dektop button?

Huh ? i see it in it's usual place.

 * mixer volume is is 50%, can it be put to 95%?

yes, i think it's a matter of adding another conf file
OK.

 * qparted does not load

i didn't touch it. does it load in Knoppix3.3 ?

 * xine is not setup up to play avi's by default
 * the same for xmms

what? you mean you don't use Noatun and Kaboodle ? :D
OK.

 * set the default font in konsole to console please

OK, Knoppix default really is ugly, isn't it?

 * xmms-bidi? i see only garbage in files, try LC_CTYPE=he_IL.ISO-8859-8
 biditext xmms works in mdk9.2

xmms-bidi is experimental package i built with patch from
http://xmms-bidi.sourceforge.net
it works great on my system, but for unknown reason, still doesn't work on
Knoppix. I'm working on it.

 - remove bochs
no default image. and why the hell do i need it in knopix?

why you ask? hmm , don't know .. it's Knoppix! it has a lot of junk in it ,
but it's kinda fun to play with all this junk, don't you think ?

 - remove wine
hard to configure on real boxes.
 no autodetection of any thing.
 rarely works (from my experience)

i never used it, but don't you think it might become useful?

+ bb ownz! (whwre can iget more of this?)
i have seen demos... but this is definetly my favorite (my other two are
one for windows with great sound sync and another one from the 4k asm
 contest)

LOL, yes, it's cool, i didn't put it in, it comes with Knoppix3.3

i didn't check yet if you can compile a simple KDE hello, world!
application. some libs might be missing.

 * FireBird uses a diffedrent font for menu then system (kde)

i couldn't find where to change FB's font. do you know where?

 lindows style

 * please use ksplash-ml and set the splash to xp

i can't seem to find a Debian package for ksplash-ml.
(actually i found one but it was broken)
i might have to build it myself. too much work for a silly thing :)
but I'll consider it.

 mac style:

 * hack please the karamba theme to show the k menu on the right

do you any idea how to do this ? if you do, please send a full dcop command.

 * use the same background image as full hebrew style

why? i think it looks nice. i wanted something brighter for the Mac-style

Looks great btw, real love as been put into this project. Just need to fix
some small things and you are done.

:)

IMHO release kazit 2, before kde3.2 with kde3.1, since there are many
problems regarding hebrew there. You may want to do kazit 2.1 with kde3.2
but IMHO kde3.2 will not be really do your remaster until kde3.2.2 or
 kde3.2.3. Stick to kde3.1.X.

Diego, Thanks a lot for your comments.
This really helps :)

Shlomi.

Re: Compiling RealTek 8139 driver whit error

2003-10-12 Thread RedBar0n
Hi all,

OK, I wget the latest kernel (linux-2.6.0-test7) and try to commpile it, but
I bump into some errors so I decided to compile only the modules by this
RTFM http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO/loadable_modules.html#AEN285

and the when insmod the 8139too.o I got this msg: .8139too.o: couldn't
find the kernel version the module was compiled for

As I read more in this document I see that there is a way to outsmart this
problem by define the register_chrdev as the register version of my working
kernel, BUT genksyms appears to work in version Versions 2.1.18 and lower...

So I google some more, and fine an article that describe, more or less, my
kind of issue...
They recommend to add #define __NO_VERSION__ to the file before the
include's, so I did, and nothing

And the last test I did is I copy the include/linux/version.h (the origilal)
and replaced the version.h in my new kernel dir, also, not a big success
story :-)

Help any one...

Gili

 Hi,

I would first try to get a recent kernel source tree (2.4.22, 2.4.23-pre,
2.4.22-ac, etc.), from www.kernel.org, and compile it myself. You can
copy the config file from redhat, and only make sure you compile _both_
drivers in the kernel (there are 2 drivers for 8139 in the kernel) as
_modules_. This way, you can insmod one of them, experiment a bit, then
rmmod, insmod the other. If you suspect the modules leaves the kernel
or hardware in an unstable state, you can even reboot between tests.
Only later I would go for downloading and compiling an external driver.
gcc 3.2 might also be the problem, though. I compile most of my kernels
with 2.95.3. I do have some compiled with 3.2 and 3.3, with no problems
(yet?). Newer ones (2.4.22+, 2.6.0-test) have higher chances to work
 with 3.x.

Good luck, and tell us about your progress,
