Flash 9.0 r31 and Javascript is AFAIK fully enabled.
I also have Greasmonkey that might interfere but it is currently

I have no idea. I am not sure everyone got the new site. The simplest thing is
to call them and ask them to upgrade you. You will notice the upgrade, as it

I am looking for a live distro (CD) that will automatically (without needing

and run sshd.

my other options are:
1. modify a live cd to do that
2. install linux on a different computer, and then transfer the hard-drive
to the broken laptop.

however, i prefer to have a live distro that does that already.

anyone knows of duch a distro ?

Is there really a 'no keyboard' requirement? Because I installed numerous

I was happily amazed to find out that the new revamped site of Bank Leumi
fully works using Opera on Linux. I also tested FF, and it seems to work fine
too (including viewing cheques images, graphs etc.).

Indeed, I just verified this to be true. With firefox, there are still a
bunch of annoying bugs (like buttons that don't work), but all the bugs
I saw so far have workarounds (like other buttons leading you to the same
place). It really seems like the people who designed this site tried to
make it compatible with Firefox, although they probably did not test it as
rigourously as they tested on IE.

I never thought this day would come - I've been waiting for it for around
a decade!

OK,

So I've setup CentOS 5.2 on Xen VPS at VPSLink, compiled latest

http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/CentOS+5+and+Asterisk+1.4.x+installation
up to and including the asterisk -...vvvc and stop now. Also
installed the rest of the addons.

Only deviation I see is that I setup MySQL not to listen on TCP
sockets. Other then that I copied all the config bits from that page
to the corresponding files.

Now what?

How do I test this?

I have a Nokia E71 with a built-in SIP client which I'd like to
connect to this thing.

I'd like to have Israeli, a Brazilian and possibly temporarily an
Australian number which will ring on my phone.

Going to didww.com I'm not sure what should I look for - Phone to
VOIP or Phone to IP-PBX? both options cost $US10 a month, I don't
see an option to pick the allegedly cheaper 077 numbers.

Anything beyond about $5/month makes this possibly uneconomical, as
for the long term I don't spend that much on international calls and
Skypeout subscription can provide unlimited calls for 5 euro/month
(for minimum of three months). (We have 4000 free Skype minutes from
our mobiles so Skypeout is very convenient to call from wherever we
are).

Thanks,

For me it's not about my cost, it's about the (perceived) cost of

The easiest way to test it is to use a computer with a SIP client.
Then you have access to network debugging tools, etc.

From Windows and Mac I prefer X-Lite which is free as in beer, not
open source.

Skype is a cheap, but IMHO not very good alternative. From my experience
it's not consistent. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's unusable, often it
is just ok.

Considering their price $6 (US) or $13 (US) with more countries it's a good
deal, especially because they are up front on what too much is. Last I
checked there was no SkypeIn from Israel, although it is now one of their
unlimited SkypeOut countries.

Although I expect that most of the people reading this are too young to
remember satellite long distance calls, most of the time, it's better
than they were.

If you make a lot of calls to Israeli cell phones, you might want to
check out Orange's deal. It's 600 minutes a month of outgoing calls
to any number in Israel, plus the ISP side of a 2.5m line for 139 NIS.
Additional minutes are 29ag, which is the cheapest I've seen to a cell
phone, but awfully high to a landline.

I don't know if they would let you take it and just use time with your
own IP PBX, or if you would have to add your own system after their box.

Since if I remember correctly, you don't live here, you would be in effect
buying a family member an internet connection.

helpful in debugging, and got me much farther than Ekiga or Wengo did.

Going to didww.com I'm not sure what should I look for - Phone to
VOIP or Phone to IP-PBX? both options cost $US10 a month, I don't
see an option to pick the allegedly cheaper 077 numbers.

There were also 073 numbers (cellcom) that were $3/month. However,
everything except 03 disappeared from DIDWW and also diamondcard.us -
this doesn't look like a coincidence. Perhaps someone knows what has
happened? I already have a couple of 077 DIDs but this is troubling.

Anything beyond about $5/month makes this possibly uneconomical, as
for the long term I don't spend that much on international calls and
Skypeout subscription can provide unlimited calls for 5 euro/month
(for minimum of three months). (We have 4000 free Skype minutes from
our mobiles so Skypeout is very convenient to call from wherever we
are).

Having played with Asterisk a little, and having set up hosting and
stuff - I'd say that there are services that will be pricewise
competitive, such as Jajah, Skype, and OlehPhone. Each one has a
different set of restrictions on the flexibility that an asterisk server
provides, but they take away all the headaches. If you're only looking
to save money, this is probably NOT the best option when you also factor
in the cost of your time, paid or leisure.

Re: looking for a live distro for a damaged computer

2009-02-12 Thread Noam Rathaus
Erez,

If you can blind type you can use SysRescueCD:
http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page

It starts everything you asked, it has minimal requirements and works on any
new hardware I gave it - even those that Debian Testing/Unstable couldn't
boot to.

Once it is up, you need to write the command 'passwd', to type the root
password, otherwise you can't remotely login to it via SSH.

 my other options are:
 1. modify a live cd to do that
 2. install linux on a different computer, and then transfer the hard-drive
 to the broken laptop.

however, i prefer to have a live distro that does that already.

anyone knows of duch a distro ?

[WEB STANDARDS COMPLIANCE] Bituach Leumi - an Internet Explorer Holdout

2009-02-12 Thread Omer Zak
Today I tried to browse to the payments site of Bituach Leumi at:
https://b2b.btl.gov.il/b2b/framesetlogonanonymous.asp

The Enter (כניסה) button does not work for Firefox 2.0.0.19 (my browser
version). In fact, the Web site rudely proclaims support only for
Internet Explorer (not even beta versions).

I think this Web site can qualify for the Oxymoron of the Decade. They
are probably strict about browser support due to qualification testing
due to security concerns, yet they chose to support a browser notorious
for its security vulnerabilities.

Of course, there was no contact information in the page itself. Their

Re: Bank Leumi site finally works from Linux

2009-02-12 Thread Dotan Cohen
I think we should send them a really fancy letter with a few dozen
signatures, saying thanks for finally fixing it. I'm not cynical. they
got nags and negative rap from us all the years, they need to get
 appreciation too.

Newspaper reporters and people who bump into FOSS zealots in Ynet
talkbacks usually (understandably) see us as a bunch of complaining
elitist techno-snobs. I say we should show our other side and give some
kudos once in a while when someone does the RIGHT thing.

(In other words, they think we are Hammas, we need to show them we are
not even Fatah, maybe Hadash at worst :-)

Even if it's late and partial, we can send them positive remarks for
congratulating them on how far they've come instead of only (or first)
complaining about what still needs to be done.

So how about if a bunch of us write Leumi some thank you notes, or
send them a big fancy Thank you kind of thing with 30 signatures, so
they can frame and hang on their wall, and later we could get companies
to get their sites corrected and we better rap in the press. We can even
join hands the some computer usability SIG or ISOC, ILA or some adult
computer literacy NGO that was helped by this. We should try to try and
make it a bigger, more impressive gesture.

 Is it corny?
  - sure, CEOs love corny...

Is it a bit kitch and looks a little out of integrity?
  - Could be, but the long-term benefits are effective dialogs with the
next businesses that run broken sites.
  - Ideally, In time, such endoresment might be actually catch on, and
since Hamakor won't be selling them for kickbacks, companies will
actually have to fix sites to get one :-)

Anyone cares to take this further?

Ori Idan, are you doing any PR of this kind today?

 Ira.

(and, as if often does, my random sig pulls out a bull's eye :-)

If you are a Bank Leumi customer, then write to them and tell them
that you thank them. I myself closed my account in 2001.

2009-02-12 Thread Dotan Cohen
Well aware of Netvision's excellent reputation in Israel, I switched
from Bezeq Beinleumi to Netvision when I switched my infrastructure
from cables (Hot) to ADSL (Bezeq). What a terrible mistake. During the
time of Bezeq's great outage on Tuesday and Wednesday, Netvision
refused to check and diagnose a problem with my connection even though
it was obvious from the symptoms that the problem was with the ISP,
not the infrastructure. In fact, I had to go back to Bezeq Beinleumi,
which connected me immediately, even giving me a temporary username
and password while my official account was switched from cables to
ADSL. I could surf perfectly in Bezeq Beinleumi, and could not even
connect with Netvision. Still, at Netvision they insisted that the
problem was with Bezeq and refused to even look into the problem. Now,
when I am trying to get out of my one-year contract with Netvision
because I had to sign a new one-year contract with a company that is
actually interested in providing to me service, they are not releasing
me from my contract. They would rather hold me prisoner as a customer
who neither wants nor needs their service, then let me go. So now they
loose not only me as a customer, but also any words of praise that I
may have otherwise had for the company. They found it right to remove
from themselves the responsibility to check my service, but do not
find it right to remove my responsibility to remain with them.

I must say that while Bezeq Beinleumi has and may still have a bad
reputation, I have found them professional and very willing to help.
They have had Linux support people on staff the two times that I
called asking about this, and Netvision has promised me that a Linux
tech will get back to me when he gets on duty (he apparently never
did). I can only assume that the assimilation of Actcom into Bezeq
Beinleumi made the difference.

So when you are looking for an ISP, I suggest that you look into Bezeq
Beinleumi and simply pass up on Netvision. A good reputation they may
have, but they are resting on it rather than earning it day by day.
That, and Bezeq Beinleumi has come so far now, with excellent Linux
support and helpful techs.

Just to save you some research, these are the prices for each company
for one month's service (I researched this yesterday when I was
looking to switch from Netvision):

Netvision:
1.5 mbs: 39 NIS
2.5 mbs: 49 NIS
4.0 mbs: 79 NIS

Bezeq Beinleumi:
1.5 mbs: 39 NIS
2.5 mbs: 49 NIS
4.0 mbs: 65 NIS

012:
1.5 mbs: 39 NIS

Out of all the ISPs bezeq ben leumi is the best.

I saw somewhere that the Xen hosts provided by VPSLink already have
1000HTz clocks on them, saving a kernel recompilation.

 See also http://docs.tzafrir.org.il/#_kernel_configuration

 I would also recommend:

 1. Debian :-) (As I package Asterisk for it)

I used Debian for over 10 years but now I got used to CentOS (simply
because it's so much easier to find hosts which support it for my work
needs).

 2. Do consider Asterisk SVN trunk. At least if this is a home PBX.
Specifically The extra timing source stuff might be of direct interest
 to you.

I don't know Asterisk at all so not sure I should try the latest and
greatest where I'll never know whether something is broken because I
did it wrong or because it's really broken.

Thanks.

PS - My main quest now (apart from actually getting to call through my
new asterisk server) is to find a reasonably priced Israeli DID. So
far they all seem to be around $US9.95 and above.

Does that include the zaptel ztdummy server required for MeetMe and
MusicOnHold? I couldn't get it to work; I don't really need it either, but
it would be nice to have.

I compiled the zaptel package without a problem but didn't install it.

Lylix.net is priced competitively with VPSlink, and have ztdummy available
within their virtual machines - however, their lowest level is equivalent
to VPSlink's link2 which sets you back at $15/month. I'm considering
switching over there if I'd need meetme and didn't get ztdummy to work on
 VPSlink.

 How do I test this?

I recommend twinkle on Linux. It has a log view that is immensely
helpful in debugging, and got me much farther than Ekiga or Wengo did.

Thanks. Will try that.

However,
everything except 03 disappeared from DIDWW and also diamondcard.us - this
doesn't look like a coincidence. Perhaps someone knows what has happened? I
already have a couple of 077 DIDs but this is troubling.

If anyone hears about good place to get Israeli DID's then please speak up.

Is there any chance that the phone companies themselves will talk to
me with reasonable prices if I approach them directly? Which
department would that be?

Having played with Asterisk a little, and having set up hosting and stuff -
I'd say that there are services that will be pricewise competitive, such as
Jajah, Skype, and OlehPhone. Each one has a different set of restrictions on

Jajah is getting more and more expensive to use for us. Skypeout looks
OK on price up to a point.
Olephone, if that's that one I remember from a while ago, looked too
expensive for my needs.

the flexibility that an asterisk server provides, but they take away all the
headaches. If you're only looking to save money, this is probably NOT the
best option when you also factor in the cost of your time, paid or leisure.

As much as I'm busy, I see this not just as a way to cut costs but
also as an investment since I will be called to setup company-wide
voip at some stage when we get around to it (actually be in charge
with, but it's good to know what your workers are up to).

sorting mail over imap?

2009-02-12 Thread Amos Shapira
Hello,

I'm looking at a way to filter e-mails on our Exchange 2003 server
using a linux box as an IMAP client.

I have it now working on my Ubuntu desktop using Claws mail but it
means I have to keep it running while I'm away which is wasteful (I
shut down my desktop overnight and weekends).

Looking around for solutions I learned:
1. My memory about procmail not being suitable is still correct -
Procmail can only store to local files.
2. The closest I found was
http://markmail.org/message/esxmz6bsejt6bt6y, which mentions Sickle
http://www.codebunny.org/coding/sickle/ which is almost 4 years old
and depends on perl modules I can't find in CPAN.

But Sickle's idea (using Perl IMAP modules to filter messages) seems
to be right.

What I envision is to run a script on one of our main operations
servers which are always on, which reads message headers over IMAP
from the Exchange server, filters them and moves them to other IMAP
folders. Just like Claws does for me already but without the need for
a GUI/display etc.

Is there something more baked or should I work from scratch?

Thanks,

Well, it sort of worked. It pointed out any read errors, but it did give
me a different MD5 sum. So I was able to tell that the copies I burned were
identical. but not that they matched the original.

For those that don't know, some CD and DVD drives have trouble writting
a few specific bit patterns. Look up weak sectors for more information.

Re: אזהרה: נטוויזן

2009-02-12 Thread Noam Rathaus
Dontan,

I agree with you, even though I wasn't able to switch our ATM from
Barak/Netvision to Bezeq Int as you did.

Their support on Tuesday and Wednesday to their business customers was simply
outrageous or non-existing.

Half the day they asked me for my username and password, which of course don't
exist for ATM connection, the second half they asked me to restart my
modem/router/windows machine as it was a problem with my side.

I didn't really mind them (if they would have but they didn't) tell me that it
was a Infrastructure problem and was being handled by Bezeq and would call me
back to inform me of the status - but the fact that they kept blaming me and
my equipment - transferring me from one person to another each having less
skills in understanding the problem or even what equipment I have - left me
with very bad taste.

I have decided therefore to move Bezeq Int, as it can't get any worse, and I
am sure it will be better - as I have 3 servers hosted at their farm and one
at Barak and even for that the support is better, for example Bezeq Int sends
you regular emails with their planned outages, issues that have occurred -
like bandwidth issues, etc - while Barak/Netvision has sent none of this in
the past 3 years of my equipment being served there. While, our up time is
not 3 years due to power failures at their site.

Of course these are my experience and my opinions.

time of Bezeq's great outage on Tuesday and Wednesday, Netvision
refused to check and diagnose a problem with my connection even though
it was obvious from the symptoms that the problem was with the ISP,
not the infrastructure.

 2.5 mbs: 55 NIS
4.0 mbs: 79 NIS (ADSL only, no cables for 4.0)

Amos,

Are you into programing?

If so, IMAP::Client for perl works pretty well (though there are occasional
bugs :) ).

I can give you a perl script I use for handling incoming requests from users
(via email) and places them into a database.

You can probably modify it to do whatever you want.

 HI Dotan

I have 2 things to say:

 1. Have you thought that good reputation is a matter of publication budgets?

Out of all the ISPs bezeq ben leumi is the best.

 2. A tip: if they don't want to disconnect you can try to freeze the

account. I know 012 charges 4.9nis/month if you freeze the account.

A better option is to prove them that are to blame because with the same

infrastructure and different ISP, you can connect to the internet. They must

provide you the service within 24 hours, otherwise you can sue them. This is

 a much more preferable option.

Thanks, Sara. I do not want to sue them but as they refused to

disconnect me I am writing a nice long letter telling them that I will

take the matter to court if they do not disconnect me willingly. I

cannot believe that they would ruin their reputation over this. If

they would have just disconnected me they would not have even lost me

as a customer: surely I would come crawling back after getting burned

by Nezeq sometime. But now? I'll never go back to Netvision.
