kpackage crash
Greetings and salutations! Yesterday I decided to install Kdevelop 2.0.2 on my RH7.1 (Athlon AMD machine) over KDEvelop 1.4.1 I've dowloaded the rmp from the net and performed the installation without checking dependencies (yeah, you may laugh if you want to). During the process, kpackage crashed, KDEvelop 2.0.2 doesn't boot and when I try to run kpackage again, it crashes. winlinux exipirience ?
Hi! Before posting this question i tried to look for the answer on the net and even asked [EMAIL PROTECTED], but no answer :-( My problem is: A friend of mine who has win98 and RH7.1 on a Pentium 4 computer wants me to help her to install winlinux2001 on it. Before the installation she wants to be 99.999% (she is so anal) sure that she is able to access all RH7.1 partitions and run programs. Ideally (but not obligatory), on WinLinux boot she wants to be able to login into the existing RH partition. Anyone knows if it's possible (and if it is - how?) Some rumor says that winlinux2001, installed on a disk other then c:\ do not work properly. book recomendation needed
Hi all. I have some extra bucks to spend on a book, so I thought "why not a Linux book". After searching on amazon.com, I've came up with three major candidates. The problem is that I don't trust the reviewers that are cited on the site, so I thought to ask some recommendations from this honorable forum. Those are the candidates: Red Hat Linux: The Complete Reference, Second Edition by Richard Petersen (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/0072191783/glance/ref=pm_dp_ln_b_1/103-3324216-7686207) Nov2001, 1117 p., $35 Linux Desk Reference by Scott Hawkins (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/stores/detail/-/books/0130619892/contents/ref=pm_dp_ln_b_2/103-3324216-7686207) Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible Unlimited Edition (With CD-ROM) Sep1999, 980p., $28 by Chris Negus, Christopher Negus (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0764536303/qid=1012820451/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_79_1/103-3324216-7686207) Nov2001, 950p., $35 My current Linux experience is "intermediate-", My goals are: everyday sys administering of couple networked stations and C++ (non-system) programming (I'm buying another book for this goal) Thanks a lot = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

hi, At my lab, we have an RH7.2 box. Recently I had to add some users. The problem is that the people that I added, are not around, that's why I've decided to do the following: I've made this script script #!/bin/bash # file: /bin/message echo Hi! I am sorry to tell you that your account has been disabled. echo contact [EMAIL PROTECTED] to activate it sleep 10 logout and changed /etc/passwd entries to something like this: logname::1234:10:full name:/home/name:/bin/message (as you see, no password field in the entry), Is this technique secure? OT: laptop for lend/rent needed
Sorry for being OT, but this list is my last hope for help (hope it doesn't sound too dramatic :-) ). I'm looking for someone in Jerusalem or Ashdod/Ashkelon or Holon/BatYam areas, who is willing to bo lend/rent/sell (really cheap) a laptop. I'll need it for the period between april, 7 till april, 30 (i'm going to "miluim" :-( ). X hangs and refuses to be killed
hi, this is a strange problem: we have dual PIII with RH7.2 on it (as only OS). Today, while X was logging out from KDE session, I tried to swich to text console (by Ctr-Alt-F1), and X just hanged. The rest of the system worked fine. This problem has occured several times in the past, and the solution was to restart the X by killing it. So I looked for X (top -bn1 | less) and found 2 processes. One process was pretty regular, and the other was: 9351 root 9 0 00 0 Z 0.0 0.0 0:00 X (I've never seen note. I killed the "usual" X - didn't help, tried to kill 9351 by kill -s 9 9351 - no reaction. It's like 9351 has choosen to ignore the superuser !!!( ;-) ) google search for X did not gave something usefull (I just know that some guy had such a problem. Tried to mail him - apparently there is no such address). My questions are: how is it possible that a process doues not respond to kill -s 9, is it possible to kill such a process anyway, what should I do in the future when this problem comes back, what will be the numbers in lotto in the next week and when will we sign pease with Syria Thanks in advance, Boris = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

here is a strage behavior of tucows site: Clicking on the "linux" link gets you to mirror selecting page, after selecting a mirror, you get to the home page of the selected mirror, when there, you have to click "linux" again and then you reach the same mirror selecting page (you are locked in an endless loop). Tried this with Mozilla (Mozilla 0.9.9 ) and Konqueror (3.0.0.12) on RH7.3 using KDE 3.0.0.10 Cookies are enabled on both of them. As far as I remember I didn't have this problem with windows. RedHat pisses me up!!
Sorry for being rude, but ... This is the storry Several weeks ago, I updated RH7.3 to 8.0 version using "update all" option. Even though I didn't asked the installation program to remove any programs from my disk, I was astounded to discover that KPackage and GnoRpm have gone, and now the only way to have a GUI to package management is some impotent tool that RH have included, which gives me no choices what so ever. This was the "last straw". My conclusion is: meanwhile I'm downgrading to RH7.3 (since it takes time to learn a new distro). In the long range: if no improvement is done in subsequent versions, I'll move all the computers I administer to another distribution (even if I have to invest 3-4 weeks in learning to deal with new environment). I wrote RedHat a letter (to [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and expressed my protest on the issue together with the conclusion. I envite every RH user on on this list to tell RedHat all one thinks about their policy. Who knows, maybe it will make them reconsider couple of things. -- Boris Gorelik Wed, 16/Oct/2002, 10 Heshvan 5763 - ! Molecular Modelling Group ! ! Pharmacy School, Hadassa Faculty of medicine ! ! How about publishing the "takanon" in transparent format (as it is designed by GNU Free Documentation License: "A "Transparent" copy of the Document means a machine-readable copy, represented in a format whose specification is available to the general public, that is suitable for revising the document straightforwardly with generic text editors. A copy made in an otherwise Transparent file format whose markup, or absence of markup, has been arranged to thwart or discourage subsequent modification by readers is not Transparent. ... A copy that is not "Transparent" is called "Opaque" Examples of suitable formats for Transparent copies include plain ASCII without markup, Texinfo input format, LaTeX input format, SGML or XML using a publicly available DTD, and standard-conforming simple HTML, PostScript or PDF designed for human modificationOpaque formats include proprietary formats . PostScript or PDF produced by some word processors for output purposes only." I just think in terms of "idiological consistency". printing on okipage 14ex via samba
Hi all. I have this annoying problem with printing on okipage 14ex printer via samba. This is the storry: The printer is installed on a windows98 computer and is shared over the LAN. while there is no problem with printing on this printer from other windows computers, I couldn't succeed to print from redhat 7.3 linux. I'm using the LPRng printing system, and I've tried tree drivers: - ljet4 the ouput test page is splitted in two, and is very "noisy" i.e it looks like I'm printing with exhausted toner cartige , and lots of unneeded blank lines are inserted, which results with splitted page. - lj5gray and pxlmono when printing (anything), the an error output is printed on the sheet. When connecting the printer to Linux machine directly, the output is OK (using ljet4. I've tried to ask OKIdata support service. They have told me to contact them on phone, since the problem was too complicated. I couldn't call them in US, so I decided to call the local OKI representative (SHER electronics ltd). Since the guy I was talking to didn't know what linux is (he asked me: "This linus of yours: does it work on DOS or windows?"), the problem still persists. There is a forum dedicated to OKI printers on linuxprinting.org, but it has near zero traffic, and I haven't receved anu answers from there. Does anyone have an idea how this problem can be solved? (we prefer that the printer remains connected to win computer). Thanks PS [1] I thought that the windows machine tried to apply the driver to the info it gets from linux, resulting in disturbed output, so I tried to configure the printer on linux as "no driver (post script)", but the result was lots of pages with some strange characters on them. PS [2] This is the error output that I get when using lj5gray and pxlmono drievrs: --- START OF OUTPUT PCL XL error Subsystem: KERNEL Error: IllegalAttribute Operator: ReadImage Position: 16 - END OF OUTPUT - the ouput is always the same. Mess with additional gcc
Hello, list. Can anybody help me with this issue? I need to install gcc3.2.2 on my Mandriva 2005, whithout removing the existing gcc3.4 . This is some more info: There is only one app that is compiled with gcc322. I write this app, since I use a third party library (static linking), and it's headers files do not compile with gcc3.4 (huge mess with templates) . The rest of the apps are standard ones that come with the distro (Mandriva). When the two versions of the compiler are installed, I experience the problems described in the original message. Removing gcc322 ("rm -fr gcc322") solves everything, except for the fact that I cannot continue working on my program (which is VERY important). I know that this sounds strange and funny, so I'll stress it again: installing gcc322 in completely isolated directory (/opt/gcc322) breaks lots of already existing standrd applications. Removing /opt/gcc322 (rm -fr /opt/gcc322) completely restores all the broken functionality. When typing the command on the command line, I get the following: "ESP Ghostscript 815.01: Could not open the file {/home/bgbg/print.pdf} . Unable to open the initial device, quitting." Googling for "Could not open the file" "Unable to open the initial device, quitting." gave nothing useful. The stange thing is that the process is succesful with some pages (see partial list below). Does anyone have any idea? PS. printing to a postscript file works fine Succeeded: http://tinyurl.com/dtg2g http://tinyurl.com/dxp7v man:gs Failed: http://tinyurl.com/8aov3 http://iglu.org.il http://tinyurl.com/9zav8 -- Boris Gorelik Tue, 12/Jul/2005, 5 Tamuz 5765 = To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body, e.g., run the command echo unsubscribe | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I also had problems with swithcing displays, but now (after upgrading to 2006 rc1), the problem has been solved. But still, can you (Alon) give a link to the LCD/CRT hack? > The wireless network and Ethernet work great out of the box, and so > does the sound card. Same with me.
