Xine Build

2001-12-07 Thread stayler

Has anyone tried to build Xine from the src rpms? libdvdread wants
libtool 1.3.5, which I downloaded and built from a tarball. This is on
a COL 3.1 box btw. The i686 rpms are for SuSE and didn't work on COL.
Xine starts but exits abruptly.

Any clues that might point me the right way?

Nothing really. Its just what i've used for quite some time, and i'm
accustomed to it. It does have ease of configurability in its favor
(menus & such). And don't remind me that Eterm has menus too. Michael
Jennings is one of the most conceited coders i've ever come across,
outside of Carsten 'Rasterman' Haitzler.

Xine: How to use it

Well, inspired by recent posts, I got and installed xine. Seems to work.
Wasn't easy to install (elusive libs) and I had to upgrade my video driver

However, I can't find much documentation on how to actually use it, with all

Are you certain this isn't something in Windows?

In Win: Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab

Sets whether or not to dial a connection.

If you are using the Windows Box as your gateway, I assume you want to
auto dial so that's not really much help.

What you need to do is see what Internet bound traffic is being
generated by the Linux box that's causing the dial out.

#man tcpdump
   or
#man ethereal

Is the /etc/resolv.conf set to look for DNS outside your local network?
If it is and you so much as sneeze in the general direction of a host
that isn't BOTH _local to your network_ AND _locally listed in your
/etc/hosts file_ it will query the external DNS servers in resolv.conf
causing the dial out.

Perhaps?

If this doesn't do it, you'll have to have tcpdump or ethereal come up
as soon as your eth0 is configured (somewhere in your rc scripts or
rc#.d directories) and capture the packet log to a file to see what's
leaving the linux host bound for where.

Thanks, Declan. But we went that route prior to posting here. I also posted
on the Caldera list, since there's a WINE expert there. I got some hits for
suggestions, but nothing's worked yet. We finally decided to install regular
WINE from RPM instead of WINEX from CVS. We may re-visit the issue later.

Fwd: Tommy Hilfiger is dressing up its e-business infrastructure with IBM and Linux

2001-12-07 Thread Douglas J. Hunley

Subject: Tommy Hilfiger is dressing up its e-business infrastructure with
IBM and Linux
 From: Stacy Simpson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
 Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 21:48:22 -0500

Tommy Hilfiger Chooses IBM and Linux for e-business Infrastructure
New Portals Expand Company's Reach to Specialty Retailers, Factories,
  Employees

ARMONK, NY, December 5, 2001 . . . IBM today announced that Tommy Hilfiger
Corporation has chosen IBM, eOneGroup and Linux for its new e-business
infrastructure as the company works to expand its presence among thousands
of U.S. specialty retailers, as well as its worldwide manufacturing
 facilities and employees.

Tommy Hilfiger selected technologies from IBM, including IBM eServer
products running Linux, DB2 Universal Database, Java and eOneGroup's suite
 of software products to create:

A new B2B portal (www.tommyb2b.com) that allows Tommy Hilfiger's
specialty retailers and salesforce to view, via the web, selected core
and seasonal apparel products such as jeans and other basic available
inventory in real-time, and place, track and ship orders;
A business-to-plant website that links Tommy Hilfiger's production
facilities around the world, which is expected to speed
design-to-product time and significantly decrease costs; and
A virtual employee store that allows, for the first time, Tommy Hilfiger
personnel to shop online around the clock.

The web infrastructure, designed and built by IBM Business Partner
eOneGroup, includes IBM eServer xSeries servers running Linux to handle
web-based transactions, integrated online with IBM eServer iSeries servers
running Java that are tied to existing wholesale and warehouse management
 systems.

"We identified an increasing demand for our products among mid-market
specialty retailers, and IBM and eOneGroup delivered the technologies and
expertise we needed to reach this growing market segment," said Brent
Findon, vice president of system development at Tommy Hilfiger. "In
addition, by integrating these new web portals with our existing back-end
systems, we saved significantly on the time and expense of deploying this
 total infrastructure."

"IBM's server interoperability and application flexibility enabled us to
reach Tommy Hilfiger's goals of lower costs and increased revenue," said
Dan Watson, president of eOneGroup. "The manufacturing portal and employee
store are expected to produce substantial cost savings and tommyb2b.com has
already proved productive and efficient for specialty store retailers with
 limited travel budgets."

"Tommy Hilfiger needed a solution that provided the performance and
reliability necessary to win in the tough retail marketplace," said Buell
Duncan, general manager of IBM's mid-market servers. "With our IBM Business
Partner eOneGroup, we are committed to helping Tommy Hilfiger grow into new
markets with its powerful e-business infrastructure."

 About Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy Hilfiger trademarks. Through a range of strategic licensing
agreements, the company also offers a broad array of related apparel,

products can be found in leading department and specialty stores throughout

Not at all. I'm running Mandrake 8.1 using DHCP. The problem was
intermittent at first, but is pretty persistent, now. My server is a
WIN 98 box that I connect to through a Linksys switch. My NIC is a
Realtek 8139. I have a hardware A/B switch in the phone line to
completely shut the server out of the phone line. I put that in when my
eDesktop install (different box than this Mandrake box) would
intermittently do this same thing. What both installs and boxes have
had in common is the WIN 98 server. It's a standard network setup
though, only needed protocols. Let me know if you need any other info.
Thanks Lonni.

A think alot more info is needed here. Which distro, how is all of this
setup? Linux, out of the box, isn't capable of connecting to a remote
modem, so you had to have set this up in some capacity at some point in

a program, scratch my butt, the system is trying to start the modem on
my Windows 98SE server. I've got a hardware A/B switch in there and you
can here it hitting that switch. Nothing will start or open until the
modem request times out. It gets pretty slow. I've shut down daemons
until I'm now running my box on the sound daemon. Any ideas?
TIA,
Randy Donohoe

Re: ECS Motherboards (again)

2001-12-07 Thread Mike Andrew

I have a severe and potentially unwarranted distaste for SiS anything. The
chipsets they develop are the cheepest and nastiest things I've encountered.

*In general* if you dont or can't obtain a specially developed sis driver
for whatever-it-is, then it is totally and completely incompatible with any
of the industry standards for that product making it unusuable with
'standard' drivers.

One of the classic examples from this company from hell is their laughable
'vga''chipsets. It would be accepted by most that the 1st 16 'modes' of vga
are 'industry standard'. Meaning that they are the modes as defined by IBM
on the original product and garanteed to work on *any* pc. Until that is,
this awful SiScrap hit the deck where they decided to save 2 cents and
simply not have them. Makes booting with a Sis vga card an excercise in
futility.

Other undocumented features from this shitset are stealing real memory from
the top of your real memory because again, they don't like the thought of
paying 0.0002 cents for the drill holes in their pcb's to accomodate on
board memory. Thus, although SiSshit claims to be 5ns compatible: try it
some time.

Aye.. I see no mention of a whois.conf on either COL31 or OpenServer5

I did find this via google search for 'whois.conf':

-a snippet from some BSD pages:
Whois uses the server listed in /etc/whois.conf, or the default NIC
(whois.internic.net). This can be overridden by the command line option:
  -h

It sounds as though you stick a single line in this file, specifying the
whois server you wish to query, if it's not whois.internic.net and you are
getting tired of typing the 'h option ...

In which case it's telling the simple truth that you
don't have a /dev/hdd node?

this is true as so far as connecting to (say) /dev/sr0

the problem you have is that the hdparm utility is not
needing any of that (it's irrelevant whether they are
loaded for that purpose, or not). I supplied my lsmod
just to make sure we were both on the same planet.

you're problem appears to be at a much lower level
than the drivers behind /dev/hdd (/dev/sr0) and more
likely to be simply that you don't have hdd in the
node tree.

RIPE-specific options are ignored when querying non-RIPE

Files

ENVIRONMENT
LANG When querying whois.nic.ad.jp english text is
requested unless the LANG environment variable

Re: Winex issues (from CVS)

I'm no software head, but I can try to tell you what to do. I've trimmed it a
littlle; As I see it, the meaningful line is this one
> > ddraw/gl.h:67: warning: type defaults to `int' in declaration of
> > `DD_GL_data'

That is not defined and is defaulting, probably because of syntax errors. I
would copy the files mentioned below out to my home directory, and try to
correct the syntax with an editor - this from a guy who doesn't understand
any of it :-o. "No semicolon" seems straightforward enough, but may not be.
If it screws up, nothing is lost - you still have rm ;-). I have solved this
thing in the past by finding the correct mailing list, joining it, and
telling my woes. I even got a patch written for my system written by one of
these guys on the list. Try asking Mr Gates for that ;-). The downside of
that approach is you have to be competent (not me) or work very hard at it.
