RR also has the Toshiba PCX1100U which is what I use. I havent had any problems with it thus far. I have had problems with the bandwidth since they went down my neighborhood and did an audit on all the lines. I complained about this also just to find that when they placed a filter on my line (to prevent video or TV) they didnt crimp one end very well and the wind was pulling the wire from the coax connector. I put in a new connector and crimped it properly now I have a good connection. Their excuse: we just contract out those jobs and are not responsible for the work done. I received clarification the next day without calling in which means they have someone that overlooks all complaints and that person emailed me and apologized for the remarks made and said they will contact the contractor who did the job and give me one month free of RR.

One thing is Windows is overpriced for what you get. Windows is not as configurable as Linux or opensource. Bill Gates is a Pirate. First stealing from Steve Jobs then telling everyone else not to steal from him. When Paladium comes out, you wont be asking that question again. You will just wonder why it took you so long to convert. Why do I get over 80% of my calls from people complaining about windows. And why are 100% of those BTOs we sell with Linux arent complaining at all. Try the fact that over 62% of those who converted to Linux are saving $$$ within the first couple months. They want to kick themselves. I called one customer (followup call) to see how his Linux box was working. He told me he was configuring his kernel and call him back in about 6mths because he wanted to do so much now in customizing his system. You need to build a new kernel with the feature in by selecting experimental in 'Code Maturity Options' from make menuconfig. This will make 'USB-USB Networking cable device support' appear in the USB section. Your USB port then becomes usable as /dev/eth1. Would like to know more details on that one. The USB-USB networking is available in the lastest 2.4 kernel (2.4.18). You need to build a new kernel with the feature in by selecting experimental in 'Code Maturity Options' from make menuconfig. This will make 'USB-USB Networking cable device support' appear in the USB section. Your USB port then becomes usable as /dev/eth1. Of course, this by itself doesn't give you firewalling/masquerading capability that makes your internal LAN undetectable by RR. But it does give you 2 network ports (one internal one external). Re: [luau] Going Rate for certs:
I will get back to you on that. What classes you were looking at were the ones originally conceived just about six months ago. We are working on getting an official RHCE program at CompUSA. I will forward your email to the ones responsible for setting up these programs. Its like I said before, the more people that show an interest and sign up with no obligation at this point, will create and dictate what CompUSA will do by setting up the testing and in some cases include the test in a package deal. I took the Linux + class, which was taught by Joe Bransfield, and took the Linux + test and passed with flying colors. On the other hand many people wanted the LC test to be included which is a totally different certification process. I recommend getting as many people together and having them send me emails in regards to their interest in RHCE or LC certification classes. I will get this done with enough support. CompUSA has a greater infrustructure to do this than any other entity on the island. And they will when enough interest is presented. Re: [luau] Recording of Linux for Schools online meeting
Im able to get connections with major manufacturers and price any part available on the market. Usually cost is about 25-50% of retail. If I have part numbers and manufacturer names to go on, I can research and get the cheapest price available from multiple vendors. Just give me a list and I will check for you. I just purchased 12 slot 1 P3 boards for $45 each and yes they are brand new. Also P3 500 chips for $28. So you can see that a P3-500 is sufficient to run Linux. Monitors or Cases I cant get for less than $65 each. NIC cards $18-$28 depending on manufacturer. I have plenty of 20 gig hdds that could be used in a Raid setup. I may be able to get 120g hdds (WD) 7200 IDE for $88. Still checking on that and about my source. Monitors are too hard to handle and I cant get less than $89 so it wasnt worth it. A part number for the EPROM would probably help. If anyone have other recommendations for a good NIC, feel free to let us know. The following requirements were agreed upon: 1. PCI bus based 2. 100BaseT minimum (GigE will probably be considered) 3. Must have network boot ROM socket If possible, please provide the card name, manufacturer (i.e. 3COM, etc), price range, retailer URL or address, part number for the EPROM (if known), and comment about its reliability (i.e. whether you recommend it or avoid at all costs). Since we plan to hook up a bunch (at least 5) thin clients to each server, we will be buying these by the dozen. The schools might have the front the money, so try to find good qualify, but cheap NICs. A Wiki page was created for the LTSP project. I will be updating this webpage with information about the LTSP project as it progresses. I have a few leads on other organizations that are also accepting computer donations. I will place these information on the website instead of emailing it to the list. I phoned Juliet Begley of the DOE's Computer Recycling Program (http://www.k12.hi.us/~crecycle/) concerning possible NIC hardware. It turns out they only accept complete systems and deliver them to school as soon as possible. So they do not store donated computers. I will put everything I learned about them on the LTSP Wiki. RE: [luau] Re: RHCE certification
Is that a night class? I know if it gets cancelled and you know some of the guys who want to take those courses, I know we are rounding up more people from HCC, HU and Heald who got dumped. We have 9 students so far and if we add another three it will fly. Also if you can get 5 people in, I can talk to Mike to see if you can get in for free. The problem is the limited number spreading out to 3 institutions. I can say Ive learned quite a bit in the Linux + class being taught by Joe Bransfield and almost ready for the LC1 test. Im havent used Linux/Unix for 3 years because Ive been doing the MCSE and Cisco routine. But if we hang together we all might have a chance in getting our RHCE. I know Joe can also get SOME people who complete the courses, help in obtaining their DODs. Hes with the Navy and also teaches on base. He told me it would be a cinch to get my DODs once I complete the three Linux courses and pass the test. I would hope others here would also like to pursue something similar and that we could help each other get through this. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of T. It would be nice to set up a sort of apprenticeship thing, where people actually using linux mentored newbies, but it would be a security problem at most shops. I could do it in my lab, but unfortunately I am also a newbie. Anyone want to volunteer to hang around my lab with me and show me the fine points of linux? RE: [luau] a generic system
Charles, I can get you a P3-500 -133 Bus with two or three 20 gig hdds and 256 meg Ram upgradeable to 1GB. ATI-16 or 32 meg video 3-D card. I can also give you a spare P3-500 slot 1 processor in case you wanted to upgrade to a dual processor MLB with Raid. I have a similar system for 3 years and paid 3200 brand new then. This system also has a new DVD drive and I can probably throw in a CDRW as well. I run 7.1 with apache and VB7 .NET programming without a hitch. Ive never had this model IWILL MLB ever fail. I had a P2-400 slot1 that I gave to my sister-in-law with 256 meg ram and a 40 gig hdd. It runs faster than a P-4 1.6 Emachine that her roomate has. She prefers to play game off of it with XP. But its dual bootable with 7.2. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Lockhart, Charles Sent: Wednesday, July 10, 2002 7:21 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [luau] a generic system I'm looking for a P3 box that would be considered as generic of vanilla as possible, preferably something I could buy locally, and perferably under or around $600. RE: [luau] a generic system
Yes but dual P3-500s run faster and better than 1 P3-1ghz CPU and cheaper. You can get a dual P3-500 MLB with SCSI and RAID for $99 from Personal Touch or Byte. The graphics card and sound card around $80. Two 256 SDRAM for $55 (CompUSA) I would sell the P3-500 Slot 1 for $50 with heatsink and fan. You could run it as a single processor until you find a second P3-500 slot 1. Im tempted to buy that dual MLB myself but I love my IWILL MLB which never gave me any problems. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of R. With shipping you will spend less than $500 and you never leave your house. The board has integrated nic and video and has run redhat 7.2 no problem. I have a test register that dual boots with linux and win98. I built it to test monmotha's boot image for my POS environment, but it got deployed before I got to it. RE: [luau] Red Hat vs. Mandrake vs. SuSE
I know that if you come in to CompUSA you will notice more people follow the ads not really trying to get the latest gadgets that come out. They may look hard and calculate the cost then head over to the sale items. Most of the time the small to medium sized business people get the emachines. They dont buy a good backup program like Veritas and then come in screaming less than six months later because they didnt buy extended warranty for the three years or lost all their customer data. Some of them are even foolish enough to try and run XP for a business PC or the IMAC (now EMAC). It drives me crazy that they dont realize that you get what you pay for. Id rather keep my P3-500, which hasnt failed in three years, than go out and buy the latest PC. Intel came out with a MLB, CPU and DDR (256) for $179. They threw in a RAID board if you bought the CPU P4-1.6 to P4-2.0 and DDR RAM for $165 for $14. They meant $114 but due to a typo, they had to sell at that price and a couple techs bought it. I wish I could have had that deal. AMD is coming out with special soon. The only thing I didnt like about the board was that besides the RAID, Onboard sound and video it didnt have onboard SCSI. I prefer a board with just onboard SCSI and maybe RAID not sound or video. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of W. Wayne Liauh Sent: Wednesday, July 10, 2002 9:38 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [luau] Red Hat vs. Mandrake vs. SuSE Presumably, you'd have one person deciding what hardware to have on all machines, not a bunch of people running out to CompUSA and plugging in every new gadget that comes out. Exactly. In order to have a successful Linux revolution, you must play dictatorship on the hardware selection. Most businesses buy their computers from Dell. For business Linux desktops, the mini PC that I mentioned in an earlier post http://videl.ics.hawaii.edu/pipermail/luau/2002-July/009085.html can be a very good starting point (for being very quite and compact). On the Linux distros of Red Hat vs. Mandrake vs. SuSE, since XFree86 4.2.0 has improved so much, hardware is much less of an issue. The key issues are the packages being included (why Mandrake is better than Red Hat for desktop use), and how openly and attentively the distro is being beta-tested (why Mandrake is now better than SuSE). ___ LUAU mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://videl.ics.hawaii.edu/mailman/listinfo/luau
Re: [luau] Re: RHCE certification
David How many Cisco or MCSE classes were dumped? I there any figures in numbers or contacts for those who were dumped and wish to take the classes elsewhere? Its feaseable to bring several small groups together to fill a class at one location. I know Michael Iha at CompUSA in Honolulu is willing to set this up for those who were looking to take those classes and were dumped. Ive taken a Linux class myself there and it has prepared me to take the LC exam. If we get enough people interested from around the State rather than small groups registering at multiple locations, we could ultimately get something going here. Everyone interested in getting the opportunity and taking classes email me or Michael Iha, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mike is very flexible. They have a VUE testing center there. In my testing I have found this to be an excellent priced laptop with tons of features that work nearly perfectly in Linux after some tweaking. Here are some of its better features: * 1.1GHz AMD Duron processor with SSE instructions * 256MB PC100 SDRAM * 14.1 TFT screen * 56k Linux compatible win-modem and 10/100 ethernet * 20GB hard drive * Removable DVD and 4x4x16 CD/RW optical combo drive * 1.44MB Floppy drive * Excellent integrated laptop speakers All for only $1,259 after mail-in rebate at the local Office Depot. (No I don't own Office Depot or HP/Compaq stock, though I do own AMD stock. Bad Wall Street... Ouch!) Kimberly (member of this list) bought this laptop and let me compare it to my personal Sony Vaio FXA series Athlon laptop. I am blown away by how much better it is than my considerably more expensive laptop. =( The both local CompUSA's have a slightly slower 1GHz Duron with DVD-only optical drive (all else the same) for only $999. Either of these are awesome value Linux laptops. Office Depot also has the 725US model with the fastest Mobile Athlon XP processor in stock, all other parts identical to the 722US at $1,559. If anyone buys one, let me know and I'll help you configure it. It may take kernel patching experimentation to get ACPI working for better battery life, but I will help you to do this. Since I'm having trouble finding installation procedures, I'm not sure if it is compatible with distributions other than those listed. I run a homebrew distribution loosely based off of an old slackware 7.0 install. Most everything has been upgraded. Of course, slackware doesn't support RPM, APT, or other common packaging formats. Can the crossover plugin be made to work manually with no more than reasonable effor (I don't want to spend more than an hour tinkering if that can be done). Also, I'm guessing crossover office and normal crossover get along fine?
