Failure to compile Lyx 1.1.2 on SuSE 6.2
Hello, I am using the g++ compiler & libraries which came with SuSE 6.2 (ie. egcs-2.91.66). Compilation runs ok, up to the point where it tries to link Lyx. LyX only prints small files
I am using tex 3.13159, dvips 5.76 and Lyx 1.1.4fix1 with FreeBSD 3.4 with XFree86 3.3.3 I am just printing the example files that come with LyX. The first two print fine through dvips and gs but the larger ones don't - can't view in dvi or ps either. They all get the same error on the text screen; "UserGuide.dvi: No such file or directory" The only tip I've seen so far was that memory might be low I tried increasing it (from 1Meg to 2 to 5) in the file; "/usr/local/share/texmf/ps/config.ps" but that didn't work (not sure if I have to run anything to make the memory change take effect) Any ideas? Ok. Did that.
Then from I directory that it's in /myhome/rotating
I did a make and got the script below
when I saw the message in the script I put the rotating.sty file in
/usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/rotating.sty
/usr/local/share/texmf/tex/rotating.sty
which is where all the other sty files are but the message
remains the same;

The only question remaining is - should I fix the make problem in the 'rotating' directory which I downloaded to fix my problem which now seems fixed. I just don't know if I have only have installed something that should be fullly installed and a result an shelving problems for a later time.
Can you use LyX to format invoices?
I am using a system which has a custom report writer. The output is plain text. In the past I used it to include troff commands which produced nice looking quotes and invoices but I found it alot of work to set up. Headers for invoices setup in WYSIWYG editors often mean images, format lines and header text are so close together they are technically overlapping (but not visually). Can I produce something like that in LyX/LaTeX/TeX ? Thanks..

Right now I am browsing through the site tig.ctan.org and downloading one sty file at a time - this allows me to load a further portion of the dvi-view until the next error; missing this sty file... then I go browsing again..
Lyx install woes on Solaris 2.6
Dear Lyx Developers -- Users on our system have requested Lyx, so I am attempting to install Lyx 1.1.4. Unfortunately I am having symbol referencing problems when I try to compile lyx on my Solaris 2.6 system even though I have libiberty.a installed. I hope you don't mind if I pass this by your experienced ears: I have this problem when attempting to install Lyx 1.1.4. But I've also tried the pre-release of 1.1.5 with virtually the same results. I am attempting this on a Sparc running Solaris 2.6. I installed Xpm version 3.4g and Xforms version 0.88 specifically for the sake of installing Lyx. Our X11 library is Release 6.1. I am using gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314 (egcs-1.1.2 release). On our system libiberty.a lives in /usr/local/egcs-1.1.2/sparc-sun-solaris2.6/lib, and since the gcc I'm running is /usr/local/egcs-1.1.2/bin/gcc, I would hope that the libiberty.a would be easily found by the compiler. Just to be sure, however, I added /usr/local/egcs-1.1.2/sparc-sun-solaris2.6/lib to the value of $LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Is there any possibility that ld can't find it??? I even tried putting the path to the libiberty.a in the --with-extra-lib parameter of configure, but that didn't seem to help. In order to get the configure script to see the Xpm, the Xforms, and the correct (non-openwin version of the) X11 library, I've invoked the configure script thus: ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/lyx-1.1.4 \ --with-extra-lib=/usr/local/libxpm-3.4/lib:/usr/local/xforms-0.88/lib \ --with-extra-inc=/usr/local/xforms-0.88/include:/usr/local/libxpm-3.4/include/X11 \ --x-libraries=/usr/local/x11/lib --x-includes=/usr/local/x11/include The configure script runs very happily in this way; and the make begins with great promise and cranks on for at least 20 minutes until it hits the symbol referencing problem. I'm including this last bit of the "make" transcript below, in case it may help you spot the problem. I notice that most of the undefined symbols have the word "stream" in them, which suggests some kind of connection. DocBook template suggestion
Is there any chance the name of the existing DocBook template could be named "docbook_art_template.lyx" or "docbook_article_template.lyx" rather than the current "docbook_template.lyx". This would allow for future differentiation when (if?) LyX ever implements the book form of DocBook. I can't count the number of times I have to explain to people where I work that LyX doesn't currently support the normal DocBook features, just the article form. -David Nedrow UUNET
Bug report
Hello,
I recently upgraded from version 1.1.4 to 1.1.5fix1. I found that a
document that worked perfectly under 1.1.4 no longer worked under
1.1.5fix1. I am using the harvard bibliography style, which triggers the
problem. I get errors when I use the \citeasnoun latex command in the
caption of a figure. Attached is a stripped down version of my document
that generates the problem, with the 'harvard.sty' and 'dcu.bst' files
that I use.
When I upgraded I did not remove the previous version of LyX (lyx-1.1.4) -
a standard policy I have is to leave the old version around for a couple
of months :) - and so I was able to confirm that it was not any changes I
may have unknowingly made that sparked the problem.

Also, thanks guys for such a great package. I find it a lot easier to
navigate large documents and typeset maths using LyX than LaTeX. The TOC
pulldown in 1.1.5fix1 is a great idea!

Gnome Documentation Project Template
Hello, I have been using LyX for a while now to write my LDP HOWTO. I have decided I now want to work on a GDP Manual. However there is no template for it for LyX and there are not selections for some of the docbook tags that GDP uses. /tmp files bug?
I am currently runing lyx-1.1.5fix2-1.i386.rpm on SuSE Linux 7.0 (i386) - Kernel 2.2.16. Periodically, Lyx will crash for me. While annoying, this isn't a huge deal and I'm sorry that I haven't taken the time to track down the cause of this behavior. More importantly, after the crash, I appear unable to restart lyx without immediately SIG'ing out. I thought perhaps there were some corrupted files in my .lyx directory .. but deleting this directory did not change the behavior. However, I looked in /tmp and there appeared to be several lyx files there. After deleting them, the problem went away. Just wanted to let you know .. Thanks, Dave

Include{...}, the correct code should be include{...}. Latex workaround:

To do this, I think I need to tell CJK-LyX that there is an encoding called

Cross reference bug?
I have been woring on a large document that has several 'include' files. I note that when I am editing one of these 'include' files, when I attempt to place a Cross Reference, and click on the relevant reference, lyx drops me back into the "master" document. However, a second attempt (which invoves switching back to the document being edited), which has the selected cross reference already highlighted, works. This is just very annoying when using many cross references in this way. Thanks David Lucas

I hope this is not a duplicate, it does not appear to be in 1.1.6fix3's known bug list and a quick search of the archive did not reveal a report. Typing the characters "-" causes a display of ``-`` (where the `` is really the proper single character to represent opening double quotes). The rendering is both flawed in the display and in the created DVI display (and I assume all other places). Type the characters "d" causes the expected display of ``d'' (same proviso on real characters). The work around is to type "-d" and then go and delete the d . Dave -- David G. html-export problem with 1.1.1
I had mentioned earlier that a - in a filename was converted to a _ in the output *.tex file. This apparently is still present in 1.1.1, which creates a problem with html export, seeing as how tth is looking for the filename with the original - in it, but the latex file has the - replaced by a _. I just built up 1.1.2, hoping to be past the - vs _ bug. But this time, when I chose Export -> HTML, I get: Invalid switch $$Fname USAGE: tth [option [option ...]] file.html] [2>err] -a automatic picture environment conversion using latex2gif. Default omit. -c prefix header "Content-type: text/HTML" (for direct web serving). -d disable definitions with delimited arguments. Weirdness with 1.1.3: Spaces show up now in mathed. Is that intentional? It is not a good idea, IMO. They should have to be forced spaces. TeX handles spacing of math better than you can in LyX. Now, if you are at the end of a mathed box and hit a space, you create a space rather than leaving mathed. Nuts. Also, I am acustomed to typing, say "\delta ", and, as I type the space, the delta appears. Now a space appears as well. This is a real hassle. I'm going back to 1.1.2. \epsilon in mathed now shows up as a red "epsilon". Why? -- David L. aspell not ispell ??
I'm using Lyx 1.01 but I'm not having any luck in using aspell instead of ispell ? I believe I've done all the right things: installed it and changed my lyxrc file (spell_command "aspell"). I even ran texhash for good measure. But still, when I check my process ID's ispell is running and not aspell. I also took the desperate measure of changing the spell_command in the lyx default scripts, but still ispell is evoked. Any one with any ideas ? Many thanks Colin Kestell Uni of Adelaide

Binary distributions
I have made up a linux, x86, libc-5 copy of 1.0.0. I can send it to Sunsite if no one else is planning to. BTW, it has been a while since I built a binary, but I was surprised that the "make bindist" command did not automagically create a binary with libXpm and libforms compiled in statically. I would surmise that anyone having these libraries would just make their own copy, and that providing a binary distribution was necessary only because not everyone would have this. Maybe for those using either debian or RedHat packages, they would check on, and insist upon, those libraries being installed before allowing LyX to be installed. But that, IMO, creates an unnecessary obstacle for someone trying LyX out. At any rate, my binary does have these libraries linked statically. You're doing nothing wrong, and it's not teTeX's fault. It's xdvi's.
Check the output by printing, or in ghostview.

Missing instructions about LYX_DIR in README.bin.example
It was pointed out by a user of the linux binary I made that the README.bin I provided did not have complete instructions for installation in a non-standard location. I looked, and the README.bin.example had the same problem -- and I didn't read it carefully enough before packing it up. I presume that README.bin.example needs the following modification: === If you did not unpack the distribution in /usr/local LyX can perfectly work in this situation, except for two things: You should set the environment variable LYX_DIR to point to the directory where you unpacked the archive. If you unpacked it in /foo, then you should add LYX_DIR=/foo (bash or ksh) or setenv LYX_DIR /foo (csh or tcsh) to your environment. In addition, as distributed, LyX expects to find its internationalization files in the... (continuing as before). I believe this is still needed, even if the language is US English, in order to find all the configuration files and templates. -- David L. I have had the best luck generating html for my course notes by exporting to LaTeX and then using tth. tth is noly free to educational users, I think. Check the author's website. I haven't used the sgml tools at all, and have not tried to use url's within LyX documents. But, tth does an excellent job (usually) of typesetting even mathematics in html (no gifs like latex2html). To find tth, look on my website for any of my class notes. At the bottom of each page generated by tth is a pointer to the author's home page. -- David L. reLyX and amsart problem
A user sent me a question about importing latex files that use theorem
environments. He said they all got translated into ERT. I tried importing a
file I had exported to LaTeX, and it worked fine, so I told him to make sure
his original file was up to amsmath standards for latex2e.
Well, that wasn't it. Here's what he tried, as a test, to import:
\documentclass [12pt]{amsart}
\newtheorem{theorem}{Theorem}
\begin{document}
\begin{theorem}
nonsense
\end{theorem}
\end{document}
And it imported with the theorem environment in ERT, just as he said. When I
changed it to
\documentclass [12pt]{amsart}
\newtheorem{thm}{Theorem}
\begin{document}
\begin{thm}
nonsense
\end{thm}
\end{document}
it then imported it as a theorem environment like it should.
I advised him to re-label his theorem environments like in the layout files.
But, is there a way to allow such things to work correctly in reLyX? Maybe
that's too much to hope for, because you never know what names someone may
use.

As a workaround, perhaps you could enter it as
foo {n}nn: bla bla
Then turn the { and } into TeX-mode (makes them appear red). This seems to
work. It was probably not noticed before since it appears only with Spanish
as the language. when I tired it with my default language (US English) the
bug did not appear.

Bug in 1.0.4
Sorry if this has already been mentioned (I haven't been keeping up with the list, I'm afraid). I just grabbed 1.0.4 as per Lars' announcement. I noticed that, when converting a file to tex format, the filename is changed somewhat. For example, 219f99-8-part1.lyx was exported as 219f99_8_part1.tex This is not a biggie, but should be fixed. This did not appear in the last pre I was using, probably pre6. In fact, I use this feature all the time, and this particular bug is new to me. -- David L. Writing newsletters??
Hi all, I have been 'appointed' as temporary editor-in-chief (actually temporary the whole redactionteam :) for a small newsletter... The idea is using a landscape ISO a4 so we can have 4 pages (in ISO a5 size). but the number of pages may grow up later (in steps of 4, obviously)... The idea is having two or three columns per page plus some running headers and a nice title, all this text plus some PS floats... I have checked the 1.0pre2 sources but there are no templates/layouts for anything like this (as far as I managed to see)... Any help in writing such a template? My TeX/LaTeX is a bit forgotten since I am using LyX but I have several books to hardcode newcommands if necessary... What I have troubles with is with LyX layouts format... So I just make a (say article) two column normal thing and it will take
care of all those things? Cool! :)
Can I make 3 columns in LyX?
Can I use minipages (so footnotes stick to their articles and so) and is
there a way to make them floats, so the engine is able to make the layout
more flexible?
Maybe a multicolumn newsletter is too wysiwyg if we think in the final
result, but I am sure great results can be obtained from a wysiwym, and
LyX's the best for that :)
Just one more question, I did a small try yesterday but i had some
problems, for when I changed font size from normal to small, all japanese
words with macrons gave compile errors. It seems the LaTeX code generated
is of the kind "{\small blah blah Aiki}{\small \=}{\small o}" which is
obviously wrong.
Oh! I already asked this but I lost the reply and, besides, it didn't
work... :( Is there a way i can 'macro' so a simple combination of
keystrokes (easier that M-c t \= M-c t) allows me to macron vowels? The
newsletter is for our Aikid\=o organization and has lots of japanese
words...

Hi all,
okay, I finally managed to get 2 clean and non-failing floppies,
downloaded 1.0.0pre8 source code from devel.lyx and installed it.
Surprisingly enough, this round I only had to write ./configure (I usually
had to specify some extra dirs as well) but it got all of them right at
the first time. Compilation was fast (on my new k62 333 :) and the program
is working like a dream, much better than pre2...
System is a K62 333, 64M, Debian 2.0...
So congratulations to everybody! :)
One of the surprising things was the new Layout->Character menu, it's much
clearer now, indeed... :)
Something it didn't do very well, yet, was regarding colors... I set the
title to blue (BTW, I didn't know LyX supported colors, amazing :) and
the rest to black, but I got some errors on the \end{document} as black is
not supported there (??). I think playing with font sizes and such is
still a bit buggy, but nothing extremely terrible... I'll try,
nevertheless, to find a reproducible behavior out of this, so it can be
traced... (I wish I knew how to use the damned gdb...:(
regarding the keyboard, Jean-Marc, it works wonderfully, just had to
modify it to my taste and activate from the lyxrc file (silly me I had all
of them commented out :)
And, for the newsletter thing... using psbook and psnup I have just gotten
what I wanted... :) I didn't know those tools, but they really fantastic
pieces of software :)
Now I just wished I could specify a bit where floats are preferred (a la
HTML way)... I think I remember that LaTeX has a way to specify that, but
it's not on the figure's popup... well, it won't be fancy but it'll be
clear and 'perfect' :)

Leaving aside my own biases (word processing reminds me M$ Word too much), considering the wysiwym philosophy of LyX, you concentrate on creating a document, not putting words together and see what happens... as the LaTeX engine takes care of most stupid things Word users usually do (unless they use styles, which they don't), we really produce whole documents. besides, except when i am particularly bitchy with the final result, I usually don't even M-f d until I am finished. That may be because the very-wysiwyg UI of LyX, but I usually do the same with SGML documents and did the same when writitng raw TeX/LaTeX... So I'd say "document processor" is exactly what LyX is and what LyX does... Just my E0.02... D@

Hi all... I have noticed that * sections (section*, &c) aren't added to the TOC... I think this has it's good and bad points. Would it be too hard to have them on the TOC (maybe at user's convenience) with a * in front of them? E.G: TOC: * Preface * Acknowledgements Part 1 1. Introduction 1.1 Defining the pr0oblem 1.2 Blah... 2. Bleh... ... My son was doing an article for school with LyX 1.0. When he printed his article, I noticed a paragraph that ended in a single line at the top of a page. I was surprised, since I thought LaTeX would prevent such things. Scripting language...
Hi all, I have followed this thread with interest despite my busy, busy agenda :( Although I really like Perl5, maybe precisely for the powerful different constructions it allows to solve the same problem (it's easier to fit the way the programmer/user think about that problem) I can see a problem in using it as a script language for power users (or simple users if that's to come) as I see they can feel threatened by too much flexibility. I have seen this happening before... Python is really nice, powerful and easy to learn and use. It has a really clear syntax and the core is easy enough to learn. (Just an aside note: Eric S Raymond on his How to become a Hacker FAQ (http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html) he recommends Python as a first language to learn of all the 4 a Hacker must know: Python, C, Perl and LISP) Another easy to use and flexible language is Tcl. Besides, it has readily and painlessly available one of the most powerful GUI Toolkits (also ported to Python and perl, among others). It's multiplatform and is probably gonna stay stable for a long time... Tcl is very easy to embed as well... If there were a poll, I'd probably vote Python, although Tcl would probably be as easy and flexible for this. Icon, well, the Icon I know a bit of, I don't find it really intuitive... Perl (which is great for some things) can get equally confusing if proper care is not taken (and who takes care nowadays? (among the power users, I mean... Programmers know the pains of not being careful, so they are... more or less :) Well, just my E0.02 (which is a bit more worthy than US$0.02 :) David@

es.po and small bug fix
Hi all! I am back (sorta). They killed my old server rather badly (and without notice) I am hoping to find an email account that can support the burden of some mailing lists... once I got it, I'll subscribe again... I have updated es.po as to version 1.0.4pre8, I am sorry if I am late for 1.0.4 :( I am also sending a hack to allow i18n guys (like me) to see the welcome message in the minibuffer when LyX starts (which was skipped due to a non gettext'ed string...) Also updates CHANGES and lib/CREDITS (if you find it appropriate) I am working on some more i18n issues in LyX, but these may take a bit longer... I was thinking about the use most people will give to LyX and my conclusions are these two: - most users will spend most of the time using LyX under their locale if support is available - most documents created will be in the user's own language, which is likely to be supported by LyX (or either support can be created via GNU gettext po files) I'll use JM's example to point out my argumentation. If I have LANG=fr when writing an english document, I'll see 'Chapitre' instead of 'Chapter'. But currently I'll see 'Chapter' even when I am writing a document in french (or any other language). I am just wondering why english is a better default behavior than the current user's locale. I mean, if they decide to have all LyX GUI (and maybe all their OS) in 'fr', and for most users, most docuemnts will be written in french, why should 'Chapter' be a better default than 'Chapitre'? It will be adecuate for much more many cases than 'Chapter' by statistical use. I am specially interested in LyX working at peak efficiency in Spanish because there is a big potential user base in Mexico (which is moving all their High School to GNU/Linux) that will benefit from LyX superior document creation capabilities. As these young beings create documents (probably school related) most of their work will be done in spanish (and hopefully using 'es_*' locale). I think having 'Chapter' as default is not better than having 'Capítulo', even if it's not the best solution. But I think it is a better solution than the current one. Now, I am not defending the patches because they are mine. I am defending them because I did them under suggestion from my 12-years old cousin (whom I was showing a SF novel I am writing (in spanish) and asked me why Linux is in english but LyX is in spanish and why instead 'Capítulo 1' it said 'Chapter 1'). Me, I don't particularly mind how it is shown on-screen if the printed output is correct (which it is because laTeX takes care of it) but I think it is a user friendlier behavior (actually not only 'Chapter' and 'Part' should be translated, but also the 'foot' of footnotes, 'note' of notes, &c... (Appendices, margin notes...)) I am looking into the possibility of doing this behavior (on-screen labels in custom language) document language-dependent (although it is starting to appear a good challenge) and I certainly invite any others that may be interested in this feature (which is not really a Big Issue, rather a minor thing for people with little time to the Bigger things like myself) to join me; but while I/we don't get possitive results, I'd add the 'locale on-screen' behavior (even if just as an option, configurable, rc, compile-time; I can change them to fit any wish) for those many cases where the document language is the locale language and, thus, they are indeed correct (even if just a hack and by pure luck). I think I'd like to hear other developers points of views regarding this issue.
