RE: Newbie questions
Hi, here is another way to get rid of the section and subsection numbering. Use Section* environment instead of Section. Same with SubSection* and so on. No numbering on the screen and no numbering on the output. But remember those sections will not be listed in the ToC. I've tried things like Layout - Document - Document - Pagestyle=plain, etc. but none of the options under the Class=article bit really seem to have any effect on the PostScript I'm outputting. text overlayed onto images
Hi, I have a question with regard to overlaying text onto an image (see small example attached). The solution as presented in Herbert Voss's tips and tricks, describes using the command \rput in ERT to specify the coordinates of where the text is to go. The origin seems to be on the bottom centre of the image. I would like to know if I can change the location of the origin and make it somehow relative to the size (latex size in the insertgraphics popup). So I can scale my image as much as I want and the origin always stays on say a corner of the image. That is to say I'd like to not have to fiddle with the location of text everytime I decide to change the document layout or the page margins, or of course the image latex size. Is this achievable? Thanks in advance. Rob ## Dr. Robert Köhler B.Sc. B.Eng. Installation problem
Hi All, I've installed the latest version of LyX on Windows2000 (sorry but I have to work with it), and then I've installed X-Win32, MiKTeX, Cygwin and Lyx. But I have a little problem: when I run the bat file runlyx.bat I get this message: Alert: Lyx wasn't able to find its layout descriptions! Check that the file 'textclass.lst' is installed correctly After that message I verified that textclass.lst and package.lst aren't on my harddisk!! What I can do?? I can't find nothing similar on internet Thanks in advance Davide CeSIA - University of Bologna (ITALY)

References problems with new class
Hi I am having some problems with a newly instaled class on Lyx for win32, (spie.cls). I am using MikTex. The problem is that when I insert a citation reference, either for a directly inserted reference or to an external bibtex reference, I get 5 errors while compiling. Is it possible that, after installing this new class I also have to install some file for the references? I have the file spiebib.bst. Do I have to put it in some folder? ello many thanx to all of you (three)! I am again glady suprised about the quick and helpful answers that one can get in this forum. Looks like your .bind files are broken... Only this I did not understand. Sounds to me like there is a user.bind file that lyx creats according to your (personalized) shortcut settings, where one could look up and change everything quickly. But as I don't need no more shortcut (by now) I go on typing now. But thanks! :-) BTW: I am a windows user who uses lyx on a linuxServer (via xterm). My LaTeX installation already has the prosper class file installed (the prosper package from Debian). Here's what I did next. 1. From Dekel's cluster tarball, copy three files to ~/.lyx/layouts: prosper.layout theorem-unnumbered.inc theorem.inc 2. Edit prosper.layout, adding this line: \RequirePackage{ifthen} 3. Start lyx and do Edit/Reconfigure. Quit. These steps are adapted from the Combining prosper and LyX section of http://www.educat.hu-berlin.de/~voss/lyx/seminar/seminar.phtml The two differences are that: (1) I already had prosper installed so I didn't need to copy prosper2.cls, and (2) I needed to hack the prosper.layout file. As noted on Voss' web page, if you want to load cluster.lyx, you also need dsfont.sty. I obtained the latter from Debian's tetex-extra package. Hope this helps, -Steve

Hi, An upgrade to Win XP triggered a chain of events that forced me to reinstall LyX 1.2.1. The problem is that the View menu does not give me any viewing options. It starts with the Update - submenu item (which does not expand when clicked -- logical, there's nothing yet to update), then the usual bottom four entries (LaTeX logfile, Table of Contents, etc.). Running reconfigure didn't help. lyX seems to be able to find my LaTeX installation (fpTeX) ok; the configuration inventory from the help menu is correct. I used Edit | Preferences to set windvi as my DVI viewer, Ghostscript as my Postscript viewer and Acrobat as my PDF viewer, so shouldn't I be getting those choices on the View menu?? Helge Hafting wrote: Agree with #1 and #2. #3 is probably easy enough to do, but I'd rather want the ability to put graphichs in the caption too. Soemtimes a small graphich is used as text, such as company logos and similiar. I use that in sections sometimes, it'd be nice if it worked in captions too. I'm not sure I agree with you. I think that graphics in captions is a little like graphics in headings/titles: something that should, in general, be discouraged. In any case, I don't think this something that LyX should allow directly. In general a word-processor has to give the user a lot of flexibility so that unusual things can be done. But this same flexibility makes the UI complicated and encourages the naive user to create chaos. Because LyX is more restrictive, it can (in theory) have a relatively clean and simple UI. If users want to do unusal things, then they can drop down to a lower level (LaTeX/TeX). If you want to insert a graphic in a caption, I think this would best be achieved using an ERT (TeX box). The only downside to this is that LyX will not render it. XOX DOM

text overlayed onto images
B.Eng. Cannot view documents
Any advice gratefully accepted. -- Paul * Paul A. geometry in LyX-1.2.1

XOX DOM
Re: lyx pdf and ps viewing
Thanks all for the suggestions on this one. The issue was the environment variables the user had set in .cshrc. Keep in mind this is a linux box: #setenv TEXFONTS .:/usr/freeware/texmf/fonts// #setenv TEXINPUTS .:/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex/base// #setenv TEXPOOL.:/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex.pool #setenv TEXFONTS_SUBDIR .:/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex/fonts// #setenv TEXINPUTS_SUBDIR .:/usr/local/tex/inputs// #setenv PKFONTS.:/usr/local/tex/fonts/pk// #setenv XDVIFONTS .:/usr/local/tex/fonts/%p I commented them out and all is well. Is it just with PS/PDF, or do you also get an error when exporting as LaTeX? In the former case I'd suggest checking permissions on ghostscript, in the latter, ditto for latex. Just a guess ... Hi, here is another way to get rid of the section and subsection numbering. Use Section* environment instead of Section. Same with SubSection* and so on. No numbering on the screen and no numbering on the output. But remember those sections will not be listed in the ToC. text overlayed onto images
Hi, I have a question with regard to overlaying text onto an image (see small example attached). The solution as presented in Herbert Voss's tips and tricks, describes using the command \rput in ERT to specify the coordinates of where the text is to go. The origin seems to be on the bottom centre of the image. I would like to know if I can change the location of the origin and make it somehow relative to the size ("latex size" in the insert>graphics popup). So I can scale my image as much as I want and the origin always stays on say a corner of the image. That is to say I'd like to not have to fiddle with the location of text everytime I decide to change the document layout or the page margins, or of course the image latex size. Is this achievable? Hi All, I've installed the latest version of LyX on Windows2000 (sorry but I have to work with it), and then I've installed X-Win32, MiKTeX, Cygwin and Lyx. But I have a little problem: when I run the bat file "runlyx.bat" I get this message: "Alert: Lyx wasn't able to find its layout descriptions! Check that the file 'textclass.lst' is installed correctly" After that message I verified that textclass.lst and package.lst aren't on my harddisk!! What I can do?? I can't find nothing similar on internet Thanks in advance Davide CeSIA - University of Bologna (ITALY)
