Hi,

here is another way to get rid of the section and subsection numbering.
Use Section* environment instead of Section. Same with SubSection* and so
on. No numbering on the screen and no numbering on the output. But remember
those sections will not be listed in the ToC.

Hi. I'm using LyX 1.1.6fix4 with latex --version giving,
TeX (Web2C 7.3.7) 3.14159
kpathsea version 3.3.7

I am writing a document - my first in LyX - where the title, section,
subsection structure of article seems to work well, but I can't work out
how to get rid of the date under the title, or the numbers before the
section headings. I've tried things like Layout - Document - Document -
Pagestyle=plain, etc. but none of the options under the Class=article bit
really seem to have any effect on the PostScript I'm outputting.

Am I missing something obvious? I have all the help docs installed if I
just need to be pointed to something I missed.

Thanks,
Mark

text overlayed onto images

2002-11-20 Thread Robert.R.Koehler
Hi,

I have a question with regard to overlaying text onto an image (see small
example attached). The
solution as presented in Herbert Voss's tips and tricks, describes using the
command
\rput in ERT to specify the coordinates of where the text is to go. The origin
seems to
be on the bottom centre of the image. I would like to know if I can change the
location of
the origin and make it somehow relative to the size (latex size in the
insertgraphics popup).
So I can scale my image as much as I want and the origin always stays on say a
corner of the
image. That is to say I'd like to not have to fiddle with the location of text
everytime I decide to
change the document layout or the page margins, or of course the image latex
size. Is this achievable?

Thanks in advance.
Rob

a little problem: when I run the bat file runlyx.bat I get this message:
Alert: Lyx wasn't able to find its layout descriptions! Check that the file
'textclass.lst' is installed correctly
After that message I verified that textclass.lst and package.lst aren't on my

What I can do?? I can't find nothing similar on internet

toc in AMS-book

Hi,

I use roman chapter numbering in AMS-book, by putting:

\renewcommand*{\thechapter}{\Roman{chapter}}

in a dutch book.

When I look at the table of content it does this:

Hoofdstuk I.Dit is hoofdstuk 1 3
Hoofdstuk II.Dit is hoofdstuk 2 7
Hoofdstuk III.Dit is hoofdstuk 315

While I want this:

Hoofdstuk I.Dit is hoofdstuk 1 3
Hoofdstuk II. Dit is hoofdstuk 2 7
Hoofdstuk III. Dit is hoofdstuk 3 15

How can I correct that?

thnx again,

It seems to me, that try to include raw PS (not Encapsulated

Yes, it is absolutely possible.

My LaTeX installation already has the prosper class file installed
(the prosper package from Debian). Here's what I did next.

1. From Dekel's cluster tarball, copy three files to ~/.lyx/layouts:

prosper.layout theorem-unnumbered.inc theorem.inc

2. Edit prosper.layout, adding this line:

\RequirePackage{ifthen}

3. Start lyx and do Edit/Reconfigure. Quit.

These steps are adapted from the Combining prosper and LyX section of
  http://www.educat.hu-berlin.de/~voss/lyx/seminar/seminar.phtml

The two differences are that: (1) I already had prosper installed so I
didn't need to copy prosper2.cls, and (2) I needed to hack the
prosper.layout file.

As noted on Voss' web page, if you want to load cluster.lyx, you
also need dsfont.sty. I obtained the latter from Debian's
tetex-extra package.

Hope this helps,
-Steve

Currently, LyX doesn't support the X clipboard, but it supports X selection.

Re: lyx pdf and ps viewing

2002-11-20 Thread Jeroen Vriesman
If you start lyx from the command prompt, you should see which program lyx is trying
to start to view ps and/or pdf.

Try to start that programs from the command prompt as a user, maybe they are not in
your path, or they are not accessible.

Cannot view documents

2002-11-20 Thread Paul A. Rubin
Hi,

An upgrade to Win XP triggered a chain of events that forced me to
reinstall LyX 1.2.1. The problem is that the View menu does not give me
any viewing options. It starts with the Update - submenu item (which
does not expand when clicked -- logical, there's nothing yet to update),
then the usual bottom four entries (LaTeX logfile, Table of Contents,
etc.). Running reconfigure didn't help. lyX seems to be able to find my
LaTeX installation (fpTeX) ok; the configuration inventory from the help
menu is correct. I used Edit | Preferences to set windvi as my DVI viewer,
Ghostscript as my Postscript viewer and Acrobat as my PDF viewer, so
shouldn't I be getting those choices on the View menu??

Any advice gratefully accepted.

geometry in LyX-1.2.1

I'm not sure I agree with you.

I think that graphics in captions is a little like graphics in
headings/titles: something that should, in general, be discouraged.
In any case, I don't think this something that LyX should allow directly.

In general a word-processor has to give the user a lot of flexibility so
that unusual things can be done. But this same flexibility makes the UI
complicated and encourages the naive user to create chaos.

Because LyX is more restrictive, it can (in theory) have a relatively
clean and simple UI. If users want to do unusal things, then they can
drop down to a lower level (LaTeX/TeX).

If you want to insert a graphic in a caption, I think this would best be
achieved using an ERT (TeX box). The only downside to this is that LyX
will not render it.

Thanks all for the suggestions on this one.
The issue was the environment variables the user had set in .cshrc.

Keep in mind this is a linux box:

#setenv TEXFONTS .:/usr/freeware/texmf/fonts//
#setenv TEXINPUTS .:/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex/base//
#setenv TEXPOOL.:/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex.pool
#setenv TEXFONTS_SUBDIR .:/usr/freeware/lib/texmf/tex/fonts//
#setenv TEXINPUTS_SUBDIR .:/usr/local/tex/inputs//
#setenv PKFONTS.:/usr/local/tex/fonts/pk//
#setenv XDVIFONTS .:/usr/local/tex/fonts/%p

I commented them out and all is well.

Thanks,

Do you have the same problem with exporting? Is it just with PS/PDF, or
do you also get an error when exporting as LaTeX? In the former case
I'd suggest checking permissions on ghostscript, in the latter, ditto

text overlayed onto images

Rob

Only this I did not understand. Sounds to me like there is a user.bind

possibility to get it run with this version of lyx?

Yes, it is absolutely possible.

My LaTeX installation already has the prosper class file installed
(the prosper package from Debian). Here's what I did next.

1. From Dekel's cluster tarball, copy three files to ~/.lyx/layouts:

prosper.layout theorem-unnumbered.inc theorem.inc

2. Edit prosper.layout, adding this line:

\RequirePackage{ifthen}

3. Start lyx and do Edit/Reconfigure. Quit.

These steps are adapted from the Combining prosper and LyX section of
  http://www.educat.hu-berlin.de/~voss/lyx/seminar/seminar.phtml

The two differences are that: (1) I already had prosper installed so I
didn't need to copy prosper2.cls, and (2) I needed to hack the
prosper.layout file.

As noted on Voss' web page, if you want to load cluster.lyx, you
also need dsfont.sty. I obtained the latter from Debian's
tetex-extra package.

Hope this helps,

Currently, LyX doesn't support the X clipboard, but it supports X selection.
So to copy text to external program, highlight the text in LyX, and then go

The only downside to this is that LyX
will not render it.

text overlayed onto images

2002-11-20 Thread Robert.R.Koehler
Hi,

I have a question with regard to overlaying text onto an image (see small
example attached). The
solution as presented in Herbert Voss's tips and tricks, describes using the
command
\rput in ERT to specify the coordinates of where the text is to go. The origin
seems to
be on the bottom centre of the image. I would like to know if I can change the
location of
the origin and make it somehow relative to the size ("latex size" in the
insert>graphics popup).
So I can scale my image as much as I want and the origin always stays on say a
corner of the
image. That is to say I'd like to not have to fiddle with the location of text
everytime I decide to
change the document layout or the page margins, or of course the image latex
size. Is this achievable?

Thanks in advance.

Installation problem

2002-11-20 Thread Davide Aprea
Hi All,
I've installed the latest version of LyX on Windows2000 (sorry but I have to work
with it), and then I've installed X-Win32, MiKTeX, Cygwin and Lyx. But I have
a little problem: when I run the bat file "runlyx.bat" I get this message:
"Alert: Lyx wasn't able to find its layout descriptions! Check that the file
'textclass.lst' is installed correctly"
After that message I verified that textclass.lst and package.lst aren't on my
harddisk!!
What I can do?? I can't find nothing similar on internet

Thanks in advance

Prosper and lyx 1.1.6fix4

2002-11-20 Thread Michael Jaeger
Hi,

I just wanted to try out prosper and downloaded the lyx-files from Dekel
(http://www.math.tau.ac.il/~dekelts/slides/). Unfortunately they don't work
with lyx 1.1.6fix4 which I am using. Does anybody know if there is a
possibility to get it run with this version of lyx?

Bye,
Michael.

Have you done, startmenu>programs>miktex>"miktex options"
and under the tab "general", pressed "refresh now" and "update now"?

Also after that edit>reconfigure in Lyx?

Try those and see what happens.

Rob

toc in AMS-book

2002-11-20 Thread Jeroen Vriesman
Hi,

I use roman chapter numbering in AMS-book, by putting:

\renewcommand*{\thechapter}{\Roman{chapter}}

in a dutch book.

When I look at the table of content it does this:

Hoofdstuk I.Dit is hoofdstuk 1 3
Hoofdstuk II.Dit is hoofdstuk 2 7
Hoofdstuk III.Dit is hoofdstuk 315

While I want this:

Hoofdstuk I.Dit is hoofdstuk 1 3
Hoofdstuk II. Dit is hoofdstuk 2 7
Hoofdstuk III. Dit is hoofdstuk 3 15

How can I correct that?

thnx again,
Jeroen.

References problems with new class

2002-11-20 Thread Jorge Leitao
Hi
I am having some problems with a newly instaled class on Lyx
for win32, (spie.cls).
I am using MikTex. The problem is that when I insert a citation
reference, either for a directly inserted reference or to an
external bibtex reference, I get 5 errors while compiling. Is
it possible that, after installing this new class I also have to
install some file for the references? I have the file
spiebib.bst. Do I have to put it in some folder?

Huh? Which problem? The is a bug that I kknow of about html export
outputtinh files in tmp dir. Is that what you are alluding too? I have
to admit I did not have time to look seriously at this question. It
used to work in 1.2.0, it seems, but I am not sure why.

perl is overkill here.

man rename

its a short one liner to rename the files.
another seddy line to fix the lyx files including.

probably 2 lines does count as a lyx error :(

Separation above bibliography in article.cls

2002-11-20 Thread Rochat E
Dear all
I am using the article.cls (RevTex4) to write a publication for a conference.
Since I must restrain myself to 1 page A4, I have to get rid of all skips and
so on.
In particular, the bottom of the document looks like this:

text text text
text text text
empty line
--
empty line
[1] reference 1
[2] reference 2...

and I would like something without the empty lines and the separation, so that
I have

text text text
text text text
[1] reference 1
[2] reference 2...

Could anybody help me please?
Thank you very much
Regards
Etienne

Vancouver style: bst file

2002-11-20 Thread Pep Roca
Hi list,

I'm writing my first paper with lyx+pybliographer (great thanks to
developers!) and I need to have the references in Vancouver style (beloved of
medical journals such as JAMA, NEJM and BMJ). Does anyone of you know where
to find a .bst file for Vancouver style? I checked the CTAN archive and
didn't see anything appropriate. I tried to use "latex makebst" , but I can't
get the right style.

Thanks a lot. Pep Roca.
