Thank you SO MUCH Daniel! Your suggestion fixed the problem for me, and it
works beautifully now!

Many thanks again,

2021-10-14 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

Rich,

Good that it's working now.

In large documents, I find it helpful to pull out every section into its
own child document and have other than the ToC only Include statements
generated by

Insert --> File --> Child Document...

in the main file.

I then put my preamble into an include.tex which I pull into the
preamble of each file.

This is very helpful in my little "handbook" (888 pages currently),
where I can compile a section individually when making changes (and am
too impatient to wait the 2 1/2 minutes for the Makefile (570 lines
:-)-O) to do its thing)

Nope. that file was mis-saved with a .lys suffix. Whatever that is.

Both the original and copied files have the same size.

Paul,

The file, latex.log, is for the main document. The file, mwe-latex.log, is
for the MWE.

Yes, the MWE displays the bibliography while the main file still does not.

Paul,

I wonder how that encoding was changed. The LyX document I last worked on
has the Language default selected; the Other shows a grey-out Unicode
(utf8).

So, the MWE displays the bibliography but the main document still does not
after changing the Language to Unicode (utf8).

I suspect there are some characters in the .bib file that are UTF-8 (which
is my default locale setting) but not "latin9".

$ locale

LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

There's no latin9 here, either.

So the log file contained some nonspecific bitching and moaning about
latin9, which led me to discover that the default encoding (at least on my
system) was latin9, and that wasn't cutting it.

Here, the JabRef settings also specify UTF8 (see attached) so I've no idea
where LyX is seeing latin9.

Fair warning to others: There's a bug in the MWE that is probably
separate from what is actually ailing Rich's document. In the MWE, the
Van Doornik reference is in a "Titlehead" environment (the others are
"Standard"), and that causes it's own set of problems.

and everything magically works.

Paul,

I view/edit the database .bib file in emacs. It's all plain ASCII text.

Regardless, there're no secrets in my scientific references database. I just
uploaded a copy to fileconvoy from where it can be downloaded over the next
5 days:

I'd sure like to get this all fixed once-and-for-all.

Thanks,

I created a .bib file with just your Keefer entry (from your next

To diagnose this, we need your "jabrefdb" file.

abstract = {Unlike most anadromous salmonids, summer steelhead Oncorhynchus
mykiss overwinter in rivers rather than the ocean for 6--10
months prior to spring spawning. Overwintering in rivers may
make summer steelhead more vulnerable to harvest and other
mortality sources than are other anadromous populations, but
there has been little systematic study of this life history
strategy. Here, we used a large-scale radiotelemetry study
to examine the overwintering behaviors and distributions of
26 summer steelhead stocks within the regulated lower
Columbia-Snake River hydrosystem. Over 6 years, we monitored
5,939 fish, of which 3,399 successfully reached spawning
tributaries or the upper Columbia River basin and were
assigned to specific populations. An estimated 12.\% of fish
that reached spawning areas overwintered at least partially
within the hydrosystem (annual estimates = 6.8--19.6\%),
while the remainder overwintered in tributaries. Across all
populations, later-arriving fish were more likely to
overwinter in the hydrosystem; overwintering percentages
ranged from less than 1\% for fish tagged in June to over
40\% for those tagged in October. Proportionately more
interior-basin steelhead (Clearwater, Salmon, and Snake
River metapopulations) overwintered in the hydrosystem than
did fish from lower-river populations. Steelhead were
distributed in mixed-stock assemblages throughout the
hydrosystem during winter, usually in reservoirs closest to
their home rivers but also in nonnatal tributaries.
Overwintering fish moved upstream and downstream between
reaches in all months; a nadir occurred in early January and
peak egress into spawning tributaries was in March. The
estimated survival to tributaries was higher for fish that
overwintered in the hydrosystem (82\%) than for fish that
did not (62\%); this difference was largely attributable to
low winter harvest rates. Our results suggest that large
main-stem habitats, including reservoirs, may be widely used
by overwintering summer steelhead. The complex migration
behaviors of steelhead indicate both the potential for
adaptation and possible susceptibility to future river
  environment changes.},

The error must be with biblatex, Biber, or the database. I scanned the

Hello all,
I am really hoping that one of you brilliant people can answer this
question concerning page size for PDFs.

First, this is concerning the latest LyX (2.3.6.1), along with the
latest MiKTeK (21.6/7) on Windows 10.  I use LyX on both MacOS, and on
Windows.  It is the Windows version that fails to do the right thing.

When I set a page size using the MacOS LyX, (using the
document->settings->Page Layout) to something like 9 inches height x 6
inches width, and then export the document to PDF, it produces a
document that is the dimensions I requested, and all PDF viewers show it
correctly.

Then, if I do the exact same thing in the Windows version, and export
the document to PDF, it produces a document that is Letter Size (8.5" x
11"), regardless of the settings in the Page Layout.

This creates quite a problem, and makes it impossible to make an eBook
PDF.  Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug that needs to be fixed?

Many thanks for your time in answering my question.
Ken Kopelson

Seems to work fine here on Windows (though I am using TeX Live). Mind
sending a document that where it does not work for you?

Something that I thought while using beamer with LyX was that it seems that
it would be easier if Frames would not "hang together". I mean: right now,
if you press enter at the end or beginning of a frame, you get a new line
that is extending the same frame. Wouldn't it be easier if you get a new
frame this way and instead would just nest stuff in order to get it onto a
specific frame? So, no need for separators either. There may be issues with
this suggestion that I have not thought careful enough about but on the face
of it, it seems like a good idea to me and to solve the issues you
mentioned. What do you think?

I think the workflow you're suggesting makes the not-always-true assumption that the user
does not use the "frame" layout for the *content* of the frame, and only uses
nested layouts (e.g., itemize or standard). Did I understand right?

Yes. It is not a conservative approach. It suggest to not use the frame
layout for the content because, if I see it correctly, this can be
equally achieved by using a nested standard layout. So, why not have
just one way of doing things. And it seems to me more consistent in
that, say, itemized lists have to be nested as well within a frame which
makes them appear at another level than the content of the frame when
not nested but they are not. Isn't that a bit strange or misleading?

Instead, everything will have to be nested if it should go on a frame.
(Of course there must be a lyx2lyx mechanism to transfer old beamer
documents to the new "nesting-style".)

The workflow would in the new style would be like this:

1. Select the Frame layout to create a new frame.
2. Press enter which creates a nested Standard paragraph to add content.
3. Press enter twice to un-nest and get a Frame layout which starts a
new frame.

Doesn't this appear more simple and intuitive?

What abut making it so that if the user changes the layout to "frame title", then a
*new* frame is started (i.e., LyX realizes "oh this frame already has a frame title so
the user must want a new frame)?

I still tend to prefer the way I suggested because of its simplicity
(especially for new users or people who use, say, beamer not frequently)
unless it has some flaw I missed.

That comibiantion does not work on the Mac and so I use the Pulldown

Insert --> Separated Frame Below

after placing the cursor at the end of the last line.

And of course you can always tie that to a simple(r) keystroke

And I sent a MWE with my first post but you thought it too long.

Re: Compile error

Rich,

you are welcome :-)-O

I would not spend much time focussing on the latel/cite key. Since that
does not appear in the PDF (only the names do, and they allow
apostrophes) just remove the apostrophe(s) in the label and citations.

With more research on stackexchange I see that you're correct. My

I'm not taking sides in this too-heated argument, but my practice is
to make every variable and filename consist of the characters that in
ASCII would be 32 to 126, and except for underscore I never put
punctuation nor spaces in variable names and filenames. When somebody
sends me a file whose filename has spaces, I just delete it unless
it's important enough for me to remove all punctuation and replace
spaces with underscores. Unless I remember to quote every variable in
every shellscript, space or punctuation within filenames cause
malfunction. Life's too short.

LaTeX Warning: Citation 'Marcoe2018' on page 4 undefined on input line 167.

Lines 149-151 in the .lyx file are:

LatexCommand tableofcontents

There are other warnings at the top of the (attached) latex.log file

Re: END-OF-FRAME, once again..

2021-10-14 Thread Dr Eberhard Lisse

That comibiantion does not work on the Mac and so I use the Pulldown

Insert --> Separated Frame Below

after placing the cursor at the end of the last line.

And of course you can always tie that to a simple(r) keystroke
combination but I could not be bothered.

I don't recall the exact keystrokes, but if the cursor is at the end
of the last line in a frame and one presses (IIRC), shift-ctrl-enter,
then an end-of-frame and new frame below that magically appears.
That does the job, but takes two hands and a couple of fingers. :-)

Thanks, Rich. That's what I do also and it is the recommended
approach.

Good morning,

starting from line 847 of your log file you find the following information:

LaTeX Warning: There were undefined references.
Package biblatex Warning: Please (re)run Biber on the file:
(biblatex)biological-evaluation
(biblatex)and rerun LaTeX afterwards.
