Install MacDVI :), reconfigure LyX, change the viewer (File Format
DVI) in LyX to "open". 

If you prefer PostScript (PS) output with the X11 apllication "gv",
this works (around) for me:

\viewer "ps" "open -a X11 ; sleep 5 ; ps aux|grep gv|grep -v grep || gv"

There's nothing wrong with HTML entities in HTML code -- they are
perfectly standard compliant. You just have to make sure they are the
right ones. 

The messages you're referring to is not about HTML entities. You
could run the output through a filter like tr or sed to replace these
if you can't find the htlatex options that suit you. Or try a
different converter like latex2html, hevea, xhlatex.

I didn't make clear enough I suggested to remove the aspell
preferences files, $YOURPREFIX/etc/aspell.conf and ~/.aspell.conf!

Looks like an error in your configuration files. Move all of them out
of the way! In LyX, leave the personal dictionary field blank. Add a
word, and ~/.aspell*pws should be created.

There is. 

You need to install the dictionary/-ies.

1. Select aspell (not ispell) in the LyX Preferences dialog, save.

2. In Terminal.app,

  cd /Library/Application\ Support/cocoAspell/aspell6-en-6.0-0
  sudo ./configure  sudo make
  sudo make install

and repeat steps 2 and 3 likewise for each additional dictionary you
want to install.

(That's a quote from an earlier post of mine, it should really be
added to the FAQ!)

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood you. To answer your original question,
LaTeX relies on external programs for sorting, as it doesn't care
about contents at all.

Sure is. Use to \bibitem command in ERT, and sort the entries

Maybe the mla style is not installed on your system, you can get it
from CTAN mirrors. Just try a few other "Styles" from the drop-down
list (click on BibTeX Generated Bibliography to see it), most of them
create sorted output. You could try apalike.

Do not use style "unsrt", try "mla" or the like. BTW, LyX just
triggers BibTeX that does all the bibliography work.

There's something wrong with your LaTeX installation. First of all,
run "sudo texhash" in Terminal.app. It will output the paths of your
TeX installation. Then, make sure you've got read/execute permissions
on the directories the texhash output shows. For example: 

$ ls -l /opt/share/texmf

(the important permissions are marked; additional w's are optional)
It's crucial these permission also apply to enclosed files and
folders. If yours differ, correct them recursively, then run texhash
again.

In LyX, you should probably also specify a $PATH prefix in
Preferences. Use the path you can get from "which latex".

And finally, run Edit/Bearbeiten> Reconfigure in LyX, and restart
LyX.

Yeah, the update issue is why I still keep MacDVi 1.52 around. Or use
PostScript w/ gv (from darwinports) under X11.

First of all, make use of LyX's ability to switch between languages
(Layout > Character > Language).

Due to the complex structure of languages, (La)TeX cannot always
guess the correct hyphenation from formal criteria, so an exception
list list is hard to avoid. You can define a system-wide exception
list you can source in all your documents.

  \input{myhypenation}\allowhyphens % make sure TeX can find it

in the preamble, and a world-read/writable file like

  /opt/texmf-local/tex/latex/myhphenation.tex

depending on your LaTeX installation, which contains entries like

  ca-te-go-ri-a
  a-ir-og-et-ac

Making these exceptions language-dependant, as you would probably
need with two languages related as closely, is possible, but more
work, read the babel docs.

If you really really want to turn off hyphenation completely, read

I've got the latest LyX/Mac and cocoAspell 2.0.2 (AFAIK the latest
version as well), multiple dictionaries selected. It was suppposed to
do an automatic install of English, but didn't work as advertised,
and my tweaks in ~/.aspell.conf didn't work either. The manual
installation solved all problems (for me), and hopefully for the OP.

You need to install the dictionary/-ies.

1. Select aspell (not ispell) in the LyX Preferences dialog, save.

2. In Terminal.app, 

  cd /Library/Application\ Support/cocoAspell/aspell6-en-6.0-0
  sudo ./configure
  sudo make
  sudo make install

and repeat steps 2 and 3 likewise for each additional dictionary you
want to install.

Did you log out and in after changing ~/.MacOS/environment.plist?
That's mandatory.

LyX.app/Contents/Resources/lyx/languages on Mac, for the archives.

Now that you mention it, there used to be a GUI encoding setting in
previous versions of LyX I had set to "latin9", but it's no longer

Palatino is my favorite font as well. -- 

PSNFSS is an effort to make the 35 'base' PostScript fonts, among
them Palatino and Times, compatible to the LaTeX NFSS2 font scheme,
to get "purer interpretations" of these fonts, so to speak. At least
that's how I understand

but I sure am no font expert!

I couldn't see any difference between

  \usepackage{palatino}

and the recommended

  \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}

  \usepackage[scaled=.95]{helvet}
  \usepackage{courier}

in "normal text" printouts, can you? If not, it would be an argument
for the switch, since math is supposed to look better at he same
time, and the new font scheme is part of recent LaTeX distributions
(for example, teTeX 3.0) anyway. Maybe one could just make them
available in the document layout font menu, for a start :)

In the lyx source code you published, change "\use_natbib 1" to
"\use_natbib 0" (line 71?). Or uncheck "Layout>Document>Bibliography
Use Natbib" (lyx-qt 1.3.2). Believe me it looks much better this way.

This has been discussed by the font guru Walter Schmidt on
[EMAIL PROTECTED] recently. I'll try to give a summary in
English here.

"-Ppdf" reads config.pdf; inside is an option "G1" which should really
be set to "G0". If you don't want to mess with this configuration
file, use "dvips -Ppdf -G0". You can also use "dvips -Pcms" (or "dvips
-Pwww" if the latter doesn't work), this way you'll get TrueType
Fonts.

"G0" turns off the non-standard features of config.pdf. The reason why
"G1" is set is a bug with acroread < 4.05 and PCL printers. The
behaviour you noticed is a side effect of a not well-documented
work-around.

I use "psiconv" from http://huizen.dds.nl/~frodol/psiconv/, on my
Psion S5; apart from psiconv, get Jim Ottaway's "psi2latex" (follow
the related links on the psiconv page); and maybe also the PS printer
drivers for EPOC (sorry no URL, search Google...).

psi2latex, which makes use of psiconv, lets you write LaTeX docs with
PsiWord (which is GUI in the same respect as M$ Word is). It uses
PsiWord's style files and visual formatting (italics etc.). You can
create your own styles (for example, I have a "Zitat" environment in
LaTeX and a corresponding PsiWord style). 

LaTeX itself is not provided, so the .tex files must be compiled on
another machine. There's an x86-emulator for EPOC which would
theoretically allow to run LaTeX on an emulated DOS, but that's of
course theory.

Maybe you have "too many unprocessed floats"? Issue a "\clearpage" (in

Make sure you have the latest acroread version; I've heard of problems
with versions < 4.0.5.

Take a look at /etc/texmf/language.dat, then run "texhash" (just in
case) and "fmtutil --all". This got me out a similar situation (tetex on

Sorry for this off-topic question, are there any tools to convert
BibTeX-files into tab delimited text (and vice versa)? I'm about to put
my BibTeX stuff into a postgresql database. (I've also asked this
question on de.comp.text.tex and got the reference Herbert mentioned
above, but nothing seemed to address this particular problem.)

Just don't tell him that it's Helvetica and not Arial. Most people won't
be able to distinguish between these fonts anyway. IIRC it's
theoratically possible in LaTeX, but it would be much harder to do than
your Jahresarbeit.

Helvetica und Arial sehen sich so aehnlich, dass kaum jemand den
Unterschied bemerkt. Nimm ohne grosses Aufsehen Helvetica; LaTeX Arial
beizubringen wuerde den Nutzen erheblich uebersteigen.

Oh, sorry, I made a mistake. The code I had in mind is to prevent
*page*breaks within TOC items.

To answer your actual question, do not put whole lines into the
\mbox-Command. Put each offending/not-to-break word into its own \mbox.

The "\samepage" LaTeX command works, to be found for example in Kopka
(1994: 1: ch. 3.5.5.5, p. 43 f.).

I'm not at home and don't remember exactly how/where to use it. If

The name is bibtopics. A different .bib file is sourced for each

German Quotes

There's a problem with quotes on my system (Debian 2.2, $LC_ALL=de=DE,
LyX 1.1.5fix2). My default-template is set to "\quotes_language german"
"\quotes_times 2", which gives \glqq resp. \grqq (speaking ERT) when I
enter  and is exactly what I want. The problem are single
quotes , they're not entered as \glq resp. \grq. 

There's a work-around I've found, I'll use nontypographic characters to
demonstrate what I mean:

What does not work:

"'test (also not when I switch between double and single quotes)

What does work but is really stupid:

test
"test
switch to single quotes

'"test
switch back to double quotes

"'"test
delete the " entered at first

Result: "'test in the sense of {\glqq\glq}test 

To sum it up, single quotes must be entered surrounding double quotes to
appear typographically correct in this scenario.

If I got the documentation right, this is a bug in 1.1.5fix2. Has this
bug been fixed in recent versions? Does anybody know a work-around,
maybe a keyboard macro, whatever, for the version I'm using.

Personally, I prefer tkbibtex. It's very easy to use and change
according to your personal needs, context-sensitive, speaks the lyxpipe.

Seems you're on Debian. Haven't tried to compile 1.1.6x yet; but with
1.1.5fix2, I compiled on a fast computer via

$ deb-make && dpkg-buildpackage -B -rfakeroot

and installed the resulting .deb (around 3 MB in size) on a 486. I
don't know if the libc6 version difference between 2.2. aka potato and
testing/unstable aka woody/sid makes a difference today; if both
computers use the same branch (potato here), no problem.

On the delopment machine, you need the autoconf, automake, debmake,
(fakeroot,) and maybe some other dev-packages I can't make out right
now in the other dev stuff here, probably it's a good idea to have
kernel-headers-* around. Be sure you have the libforms* stuff on both
machines.

Sorry I've lost the beginning of the thread... I'd install a working
LaTeX, then remove everything I don't need from the tree. Maybe you
could specify the LyX features you really really need? I have a 25 MB
LaTeX on my 8 MHz Classic I Mac; if I found a ghostscript to work on
it, I could get it under 20 MB easily because I wouldn't need the
cm/ec fonts, probably not an option if you need formulas, which I

You should respect the depth of your tex tree when you install new
class files. For example I'd put your stuff into
/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/, or, as I usually do, into
/usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex/, which must be in your latex search
path.  Assuming you're on Linux w/ tetex, your /etc/texmf/tex.cnf
could begin with the following lines:

TEXMFMAIN = /usr/share/texmf
TEXMFLOCAL = /usr/local/share/texmf
HOMETEXMF = $HOME/Texmf
TEXMF = {!!HOMETEXMF,!!$TEXMFLOCAL,!!$TEXMFMAIN}
SYSTEXMF = $TEXMF
VARTEXFONTS  = /var/spool/texmf
TEXMFDBS = $TEXMF;$VARTEXFONTS

Then run texhash as root. You can use the /usr/local/ tree for
system-wide changes, and users can still set up their own trees in
their home dirs. What's found first is used first, so
/usr/local/ packages override default packages, and packages in home
dirs override /usr/local/ packages.

Here's another way if you're on Linux:

Install a window manager that supports multiple desktops, like icewm
plus its configuration tool icepref. You can have, for example,
tkbibtex (which supports the .lyxpipe) on one desktop by default, LyX
on a second, and switch by a key combination between the two
desktops. You don't even have to copy and paste a bibliograhy entry
from tkbibtex, just hit the "c" key to have it inserted into LyX on
the other desktop, or wherever it's running.

The .lypipe (check your ~/.lyx/lyxrc file to activate it) is
definitely one of my favourite features!

I think, like others, a german speaking list would be a useful
complement, mostly aimed at "users", not so much at developers. For
example the secretaries in our department would probably be very happy
with it.

Straight to the point: I'm very disappointed. Not even M$ dared to
introduce a file format change between minor versions, say, 1.1.5 to
1.1.6; they made (or declared) changes in major releases "only",
e.g. Word 6/97/2000. What do you think I mean when I see a .lyx file?
Not that I don't know if I'll ever be able to open it, like one of
those dreaded .doc files. When I use LyX I want the long-term
compatibility the underlying LaTeX provides. If a .lyx file is not a
.tex file, well; but if a .lyx file is not readable by the
not-latest-and-greatest minor(!) version because the file format has
changed, we're heading into the wrong direction.

Please don't get me wrong: I apppreciate the LyX project very much,
and I want to say thank you right now to all the great folks who bring
in their time and skills and creativity. Nevertheless, though I never
thought I needed to, I'll also look for alternative tex shells from
now on.

These are my \EUR{0,02}, and you know it's quite weak a currency
nowadays. I'd be very interested in your opinion; and will relyx a
little now...

Jean-Marc,

what I really like about LyX are its interfaces. I think the .lyxpipe
is a great idea, and make extensive use of the custom export
command. What I would really appreciate are more customizable
interfaces, which let me happily pipe my stuff! I'd like to have about
five custom export commands, greyed out if not set up... Get things
less specific and more interchangeable...

As for the fax, the former solution wasn't ideal; I had problems to
automize reading and converting the fax addressbook for a system-wide
efax. But that didn't really matter. Of course my users can still
print to '-Pfax -J 1234567' (efax is able to print to lpr), but it's
less convenient for them. Just an example.

As for faxes printed to lpr, well, why should I use another GUI than
LyX when sending; and most Picture viewers can display the
fax-specific tiff format, so I don't need a Fax program for displaying
them either. I'd "really need" an addressbook in/for LyX that lets me
trigger a number of export functions of LyX, for faxes or various
stuff.

PS: Hope you don't mind the K.D.E. joke :)

Do an 'apt-cache search debmake' and install everything debmake
depends on and suggests. As I mentioned earlier, the binary is called
'deb-make', not debmake as the package.

Don't know; what about your environment variables? Try in an xterm if
you're using bash:

export LC_ALL=de_DE ; lyx

If this was the cause of the problem, you could write "LC_ALL=de_DE"
into /etc/environment.

Another idea; are you sure there's gettext installed? And if it is,
try to recompile using deb-make instead of configuring
manually. Instructions:

untar a fresh source file, cd into the new directory.

$ deb-make
$ dpkg-buildpackage -B -rfakeroot

Enter s for single binary when you're asked.

Set up the parameters from the menu or in the resp. LaTeX preamble,
and save your document in ~/.lyx/templates/, from where it will be
sourced as template from then on.

Choose from the menu; setup is to be found in ~/.lyx/lyrc, which
overrides /etc/lyxrc (debian)

Do apt-cache searches for tetex, ps, and dvi; install at least
everything with tetex in its name. Set up a custom tree in
/usr/local/share/, and install eventually missing LaTeX stuff there.

You're welcome! I can send you my setup files if you want. You
wouldn't only get ps and pdf (and maybe rtf) with 1.1.5fix2
automagically, but could also (e)fax from within LyX.

The soul package can do pretty much. However d o  n o t use
Sperrdruck. You wouldn't use Fraktur either when you quote, would you?

For the reader, "Hervorh. im Orig./von mir" (Emphasis found in the
original/added by myself) would make a difference, in most contexts
not how this is achieved. If it made a difference, one could use
typewriter text (\texttt) and add a comment what that stands for, but
I just wouldn't.

localized german version if I set the necessary environment variables,
on the PPC not (though I now it's supposed to works because the
1.1.4fix3 .deb from Debian suupports localization). So there's
apparantly something missing on the PPC, but what?

Missing localization

I've compiled 1.1.5fix2 both on my PC and on my PPC. On the PC I get
german localization, on the PPC not (I know it generally works on the
PPC because a precompiled 1.1.4fix3 .deb shows up in german).

Both are Debian 2.2 potato boxes. I used 'deb-make' and
'dpkg-buildpackage -B' on the sources on both machines. Apparently
something's missing on the PPC, but what could it be?

You're right in both, my apologies. For pdf to ps, I just print to a file...

My "private" solution for ~/.lyx/lyxrc (must be single long lines):

In LyX: File > Export > Custom, hit Enter. Note: you'll get a "native"
.pdf from pdfelatex.

A good advice.

Some other things you can try just now:

- use PostScript fonts in LaTeX/LyX, prefer "Times" (expands to Times,
Helvetica, Courier)

- use pstopdf (from xpdf) instead of ps2pdf; read the man pages for both!
