Sorry about the late reply.

I was using the included library. When I try the
--without-included-boost flag, it says it can't find it, even though
it's installed. Do I need to put something in my path so it sees the
native version?

compiling LyX for maemo (arm architecture)

I don't know the first thing about compiling on OS 2008 (Maemo) for
Nokia internet tablets. The architecture is armel - do I need to put
any special flags in while compiling? I have a dev environment set up
and I think I have all the dependencies (QT libs, etc)

I have an error as described here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=30876

Can anyone figure out what's going on, or if there is an arm option I
can pass in? I couldn't find anything about that in there. What drives
me crazy is that there are all these dead ends about compiling LyX for
Maemo but no actual downloads. Any help at all would be useful.

aspell on ubuntu with LyX

Hey guys, I am running into difficulty getting aspell working under
Xubuntu. I installed it but the spellcheck button is always grayed
out...is there some sort of setting I can turn on to get it working? I

Hi guys. I am finishing up a paper for my algorithms class and I ran
into a little snag when it comes to displaying code and wrapping.

1. Sometimes very long lines are simply cut off (!) Take for example
this long output of a sorting algorithm: (100   100   100   98   96
95   95   92   91   91   83   83   80   79   78   78   75   73   73
66   64   62   60   57   56   55   53   52   44   43   43   40   39
38   37   36   34   32   28   28   27   26   5   4   4   4   4   3   1
  1). That goes way off the screen never to be seen again.
2. I was having some problems with things hyphenating, rendering the
actual code displayed useless. I seem to have fixed them by making the
font really small but I suspect they would pop up again if I made the
font big again, so sorry I don't have an example.

Any pointers?

subscript in superscript

missing something, but I can't get subscripts to work within
superscripts. I want to write N^log_b(a) but the underscore always
shows up no matter what I do. Tips?

Unicode with CJK wiki added

Hi everyone, I updated the Unicode wiki
(http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/Unicode) with CJK info for my own benefit as
much as everyone else's :) It's kind of a complex process, and when I
got my own computer I forgot how I set it up...well now I'll never
forget :)

Feel free to work on it (I wasn't really sure what to put under the
"general" unicode section so I left it), also I just realized that
adding more TTF fonts may be facilitated by using this program :
http://mtfi.sourceforge.net/ ...but I really don't know much about
that, if anyone could add stuff for Korean, that would be great!

I'm also planning on adding some info on Devanagari using the Devnag
package, but I actually haven't tried that yet, so who knows if it'll
work *crosses fingers*

No, loading TIPA is not supposed to be needed. When the unicode file works
properly it will load all needed packages automatically. The suggestion by
Stacia was a shot in teh dark, or maybe a misunderstanding.
The only thing that has to be explained is that the choice of utf8 as
encoding can either be a good one (if your document contains characters
that are supported by the LaTeX utf8 encoding, but are not in the
unicodesymbols file), or not work (you saw that). This depends on the
document contents.

Yes, that's exactly how it works - if I get Devanagari working, it
will be through the Devanagari package...

I think a lot of us are struggling over this right now and there are
obvious bugs...The unicode page right now is a little funny. I may
update it with the CJK stuff but for the other stuff (Unicodesymbols
file stuff) I think we should wait since there looks like there are
some bugs..especially on that encoding thing that I mentioned that
seems to be related to this - LyX will reject anything that looks
"unicode-y" even if isn't going to processed that way.

Can also confirm it with this file, thanks for the example - glad I'm
not just being crazy over here at this end. You didn't place the TIPA
package in the preamble but it still shouldn't be a problem since it
won't work either way.

about " Error closing output file: some of the characters are not
representable in this document's encoding. Please change to UTF8". I
tried Latin1, Default, and ascii as well as some other ones for good
measure. But then if I *do* change to utf8, it won't use the

very odd that it would turn up here, since it pretty much renders the

If you use utf8 as encoding for LaTeX the unicodesymbols file will not be
used, because all these characters can be encoded in utf8. The
unicodesymbols file will only be used for symbols that cannot be encoded in
the choosen encoding. Use something like auto, latin1 or even ascii in the
document settings.

If you still have problems send a sample document and describe exactly what
goes wrong.

Eww, something is definitely up - I deleted almost all the entries in
the file, reconfigured, and checked to see if LyX still rendered some
of the few characters that it was doing correctly (ng for example).
Works fine. I'm beginning to think the path to this file is not
specified correctly somewhere.

Hi, I installed the IPAM font as referenced on that site, and now it
works fine in LyX, no crashes or exporting to latex necessary! With
the newest LyX beta at least. Attaching a test file to prove it...

Now that I've gotten that fixed, time to run over to bugzilla to ask
for a feature to make the \begin{CJK} thing (or the equiv in Devnag)
to be more transparent..

Did you install a CJK font? There is no CJK font present by default
(song is referenced, but not present). If you don't have one, you can
find one together with instructions here

on my own using your instructions, Marc, and I can't get it to work, I
just get tons of errors. Could you include a test file that I can look
at? Also this may have been fixed in the latest LyX so you don't have
to export to LaTeX, I'm not sure...

I just realized that this could work if you were to manually put the
\dn around all unicode text. This vaguely rings a bell about how
someone solved the CJK problem, but I can't seem to find the mail
right now...something like that CJK was solved by manually putting the
\being{CJK} command in front of everything? I don't remember how this
was resolved but if the developers added something to account for
certain blocks of unicode text (CJK, Devanagari, etc) or even a manual
switch to "turn on" marking of the text as CJK/Devang/etc  we could
probably solve this problem. I would be happy to write out a file for
the Devanag package when I have time.

Also did you ever post your IPA file on linguistlyx? I can take a look
at that and see if I can add any symbols..although honestly I hardly
ever have use for most of those really bizarre ones in there (though
strangely enough I needed a symbol in there once that I couldn't find!
And no, it wasn't the labiodental flap.)

The diacritics work, since they are marked as combining characters in the
unicode file. LyX takes care of the proper order when it encounters
combining characters.

AFAIK not for TIPA. I already added some TIPA symbols (including the ones
you mentioned), but not all. As an example, the entry for cedilla looks
like this:

The unicode file can only handle simple replacements: There needs to be a
1:1 relationship between the UCS4 code point and the LaTeX command. It does
also work for characters that are marked as "combining" in unicode (e.g.
0x0303 COMBINING TILDE), they can be combined with any base character.
Everything that is more complicated does not work.

From what you describe it looks like the unicode file will not work for
Devanagari. More sophisticated support in the LyX sources is probably
needed.

in unicode is actually encoded afterwards. Using the devanagari
package, in shorthand "ki" would be {\dn Ek}. Uh oh. Also, one of the
vowels ("u") is encoded like this for "ku" - {\dn \7{k}} Not sure how
this would work, or if any of it would work because the vowel and the
consonant have to go together to create a proper symbol - for example,

I'd be willing to update the unicode file if someone gave me tips on

If we could get this working, it would be really neat, since it would
effectively get around the need for the preprocessor. My Sanskrit
teacher told me that I make a lot of mistakes in my assignments when I
use LaTeX no doubt due to the preprocessor making it difficult to
catch my mistakes.

Hi, sorry about asking an old question. I honestly didn't know what to
look for since it was hard to explain!

I'm still a little confused about it even after reading the wiki and
that page. Is there any way I could just put in a little ERT somewhere
and have the lists still be displayed in LyX as numbered lists (I
don't care if the numbers look wrong, I just want it to still look
like lists or I will get confused with formatting and spell checking)

Sorry about the confusing title of this mail but I don't know how to
sum it up better. Say I have a document like this:

1. A b c
2. e f g

some text

1. more text
2. and more text

How could I make it look like this:

1. A b c
2. e f g

some text

3. more text
4. and more text

Where each time the numbers don't reset but keep track of all the
numbers in the document? I vaguely remember something about being able
to manually set the number for each one, and command would be
appreciated, but I'd like something more general in case I decide to
add a few numbers to each one or move them around, so I wouldn't have
to worry about the numbers getting mixed up. Thanks!

Jabref Meta comments showing up in my citation list (1.4.4)

Hi, I don't know if this is fixed in 1.5.0, but I've always been
annoyed that the JabReb meta comments show up in the citation
box...Does this only happen to me or does it happen to other people as
well, and does anyone know the status of it? If not I'm gonna bug it
on bugzilla.

Put an empty ERT in the line with "1." It won't appear correctly
within LyX, but it will typeset how you want.

fiddly little figures

Hi guys. I've never done a paper with figures before so I'm slowly
figuring things out.

Figures seem to like to go on the top of the page, above any text. I
guess this is if you want to intersperse the figures throughout the
paper, which I don't want to do. Okay fine, so I put them all at the
end with a newpage command. Only problem here is that they're all on
separate pages. Some of them are kind of small and it seems like a
waste to me. I'm pretty sure that more than one can fit on each page.
How do I make it do this?

Another CJK issue is that while I can type Japanese, I don't see the IME

It looks like a bracket is misplaced, but I haven't done anything
dodgy, just normally used Jabref and LyX (although I did put the

Can't use 1.5.0 for CJK right?

Hi everyone. I am going to be writing a paper which will probably need
some CJK characters in it. I have the problem which is discussed in
the following bug report: http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3043

I'm not sure what's been done since then or if there's been an update
which will actually let me use Unicode CJK characters. Has there been
or should I just stick to good old 1.4.4? Sigh. Wanted to give the
beta a try but looks like it's not gonna happen.

character styles in LyX 1.5.0?

I had a question about character styles in LyX 1.5.0. In 1.4.x, they
were implemented as a bit of a hack through the command buffer. I
remember being really excited about this feature (as I use a lot of
ERT for things in different scripts) but I never ended up using it
because of the clunky interface (or lack thereof) and lack of
documentation. This was a really promising feature but I think it
needs more work before people actually begin to use it on a daily
basis - is there any chance that in LyX 1.5.0 we will have a menu and
a GUI to add more character styles?

The problem we had with our previous 8bit-based document model was
that we had to hope that the user had entered its characters in an
encoding which was the same as the one used by LaTeX. While this
definitely allowed for nice hacks, it was not a very reasonable
situation.

A first step in the unicode transition is to support properly the
encodings we used to support, that is basically european encodings. We
should now be able to mix these in a document and obtain proper
output.

A second goal would be to integrate the cjk-lyx port and get proper
support for cjk. This should not be too difficult since the code
exists.

I understand that this new code is a step back for knowledgeable
people who created some neat hacks. Hopefully, we will be able to
replace that with working code.

Something that is really missing now is code to be able to replace
missing glyphs with the corresponding LaTeX macro.

honesty and with no disrespect meant - what is the point of going
through all this trouble to make LyX unicode compatible if it well,
doesn't work with the majority of unicode text? For me the unicode
text displays in LyX fine (with a few quirks) so I was mislead I
guess.

I saw a Sanskrit package before which used Omega. I have no idea what
omega or aleph are or how I could implement them in Windows, I'm
afraid. I just use MikTex. What I use now is the velthuius package,
but the downside to this is that I have to convert to latex and use a
preprocessor on them.

The UCS package is really technically and I can't quite figure it out.
I think I may have to compile something using a perl script because
there are a lot of tgz files, some of which have promising names like
"devanagari".

I'm pretty non-technical but I can give you the examples that I use to
typeset Japanese and Sanskrit with now. I'm afraid I can't help you
that much with other languages at the moment.

I've no experience in typesetting Sanskrit either, however, Google pointed me
to this site that seems to have some basic information:

Seems that you'll need Omega (or its successor, Aleph) and the utf-skt package
to typeset Sanskrit in unicode-LaTeX. For non-unicode-LaTeX, there's the
sankrit package (http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/language/sanskrit).

Also, you might have some luck with XeTeX (http://scripts.sil.org/xetex).
Since it's developed by the SIL, I could imagine that Sanskrit is supported.

As Jean-Marc wrote, if you can provide us with some more information on what
is needed to typeset Sanskrit, we can try and intergrate that natively.

Hi, I addressed this in another mail but no one seemed to answer and I
can't really find any posts about how exactly to use this great new
feature in 1.5.0. I'd like to use it for my Sanskrit assignment if I
can to test it out. I've tried it with both Sanskrit text and
Japanese, and both of them said this once I changed the encoding to
UTF8:

Package inputenc Error: unicode char \u8: (character) not set up for
use with LaTeX

Then I tried putting \usepackage{ucs} in the preamble as I saw
something about it in an old LyX post. Now it gives a different error
message, but pretty much the same thing - Package ucs error: Unknown
Unicode character 12399 = U+306F (for example with Japanese hiragana
HA) Then it gives this in the info:

HIRAGANA LETTER HA
Character available with following options:
  cjkjis.
Enter I! to define the glyph.

Umm, kind of funny that it's saying it doesn't know what the unicode
char is but then goes out and says what it is in the info.

When I do put cjkjis in the options, it doesn't help, it just has a
bunch of "undefined control sequence" errors.

Similar thing for Sanskrit - it whines about putting combine into the
options, but when I do, it just gives me a bunch of "undefined control
sequence" stuff.

I know that 1.5.0 is in its alpha stages but I hope that the final
version makes this stuff a little more transparent for the user - I
wouldn't want to have to hack around with the preamble every time I
play with a new script.

Ahh, thank you, I did try unchecking the "use language's default
encoding" but I didn't see the drop down list that appeared! I changed
it to utf8, but the problem I have now is that any non English char I
put in (well, Japanese and Sanskrit) say: Package inputenc Error:
unicode char \u8: (character) not set up for use with LaTeX

I may have done something stupid though - when I was first looking for
encodings, I went to preferences/Outputs/Latex and changed "TeX
encoding" there to utf8, and promptly forgot what it used to be. I
checked on my old LyX installation and it said T1 so I put that back
in there, but it may  not be the right one that's used for LyX 1.5.0 .
Could someone tell me if that's the right "TeX encoding"?

I had a few crashes but nothing I could reproduce easily.

I'm having problems with instant preview - it seems to be sporadic. A
lot of the LinguistLyx things don't work anymore - although only one
of them might be considered a bug, you can't put quote marks into a
"phonetic text" box, even though you're supposed to be able to. The
tree thing doesn't work right now but it could be an instant preview
problem.

Another odd error, not in LyX but the way it passes things to other
programs - I perhaps stupidly downloaded Adobe Reader 8 and it's now
my default PDF reader. It's not very stable and it crashes sometimes.
But when I was experimenting with English only docs, it makes it start
in a way that it doesn't usually start, like it's the first time or
something (a box comes up and says would you like to turn on blah blah
blah). And then after I close the document, it crashes. Not really a
LyX problem but you may want to look into that.

One more potential bug and then I'll stop: I was using Japanese text
through the CJK package, which requires you to put in encoded Japanese
in ERT  which is made up of weird chars like "À¤¤Î¿Í¤Î ¸«ÉÕ¤±¤Ì²Ö¤ä
¸(r)¤Î·ª " It worked fine in LyX 1.4.3 but for some reason the
encoding monster thinks that the weird symbols in the ERT need to
change the encoding to unicode, which end up messing up the document.

Not sure if these really constitute bugs or where I should report them
so sorry if this is the wrong place.

If you try to select a type other than inches on the drop down menu
before you have chosen a size, it won't let you change. It will only
let you change after you've typed in a number, and if it's a large
number in inches at least, LyX will slow down.

The thing with the borders worked great, thank you - I was trying this
before but I always right clicked and somehow selected the last cell
in the table. This time I went to the drop down menu and selected
table settings. I don't have the table toolbar because I'm too lazy to
hack around to make it show up...

Still wondering about the width, though. When I try the same method
trying to set equal widths to each column, it only sets the width of
the last column. Setting them manually is not terrible, but not ideal.

- mark all table cells (not the table itself)
- right-click in the toolbar to open the table toolbar
- use the button to disable all table lines

So if the table toolbar is shown, its only one click.

Hi, I didn't think of exporting it to LaTeX, since I thought LyX
format was pretty much identical. That seemed to have made it in a
form which the preprocessor can recognize. Thanks.

I guess the more pressing problem now is dealing with the table. I
messed around with it some more, and I did get the page width thing to
work, but it seemed to be only for one row, and not the whole table.
Whoops! Still have no idea how to do the no borders thing.

Fast replies are appreciated, and as an incentive - I'll use Open
Office if you guys don't respond fast enough! :D

Hey there, I am trying to make a Sanskrit noun and verb paradigm in
LyX. First I'll deal with my table problems and then stick in the
problem I'm having with the way ert is represented in the LyX file.
I'm using the latest version of LyX on windows XP.

I want to make a table that has no borders. So far I've found no
elegant way to do this except for going to each seperate cell and
turning off the borders. Is there an easier way, sort of like the way
you do it in HTML?

Second, I want the table to span the width of the page and be as high
as the page. When I select table width, I seem to have a lot of
problems if I try to select anything except for inches, even when I
see an option that says something like "percent". Is this a bug? I
couldn't even enter in cm or something, it would always jump back to
inches.

My last question is trouble I'm having with getting the Indian
alphabet devanaagarri to work. I'm using a package called Velthuis.
The kind of annoying thing about this package is that you have to run
your document though a pre-processor which takes any text that you put
after /dn in ERT and turns it into funny symbols that you can't really
make sense of, but makes the characters display correctly in the
output document. I don't have any problems with this, but I found that
if I run the preprocessor on a LyX document I run into some problems.
I think the program is looking for something like {/dn rama.h vana.m
gacchati} which it replaces with its own code...but in the lyx
document, there seems to be a line break and an inserted "/backslash"
inbetween this, making it something like:
{
\backslash
dn rama.h vana.m gacchati}

which the preprocessor doesn't pick up on. Oops. Any way to get around
this in ERT?

Sorry to keep replying to this topic myself, but it keeps getting more
and more complicated. I find that if I delete and remake the Bibtex
references list, it works with a default "natplain" style. However, if
I try to mess around with the styles, and change back to where I
assume the natbib style is located, it starts doing the question marks
thing again. Also, I had to put an extra setting in order to get
circular brackets, which should have been a default setting. It's all
very odd. Does someone have an in depth tutorial on exactly how one
can use bibtex and natbib for Author/year type citations? It seems
that every time I try this out I run into problems.

Nevermind  - I deleted the ref thing at the end (which I had added

Help Creating a Wiki Howto for Japanese

Hi, I was tinkering around tonight on my Windows installation of LyX
1.4.3 (not CJK) and I figured out how to make it output Japanese text.
This might be a really dumb question but I can't really find any good
information on the wiki page on how to make new pages - I only know
how to edit old ones. I also have no clue how the upload thing works
in case I want to upload a screenshot. Sorry about these dumb
questions but I think it would be helpful for people using Japanese on
a non CJK LyX. Thanks.

Putting something in the center of the page

something like a seperate title page? I'm doing a bit of a hack right
now with a ton of line breaks, but it seems like there should be a

change font of section headings in output document

Hi, I am trying to write a document in APA style. I selected the APA
layout, but there's one thing that doesn't line up with what my
teacher wants. The section headings are properly centered, but they're
in a slightly larger font than the rest of the document. How do I
change the font of the sections in the output document to be normal
size? That's all I want to change.

 Notice that all the LyX code snippets are formatted in weird
ways...the original LyX code didn't have anything special and you can
see big differences - look at the first line of 7.9, 7.10, 7.20. I
didn't put any spaces there but it's doing weird hyphenation stuff.

Changing enumerate style

This is a real newbie question, but I couldn't seem to find it
anywhere. How do I change enumerate so that for one part of the
document it displays something like a, b, c...instead of 1,2,3?

I know I asked a question like this before and I know it's a touchy
subject because people go Oh lyx isn't a word processor etc but I keep
running into this problem, and I know there must be some kind of
solution because it's relatively simple. I want to format something
like this:

S = blah blah blah
  1. blah blah blah
  1. more stuff
  2. yet more stuff
   2. ending up
   3. the end!

I don't necessarily want to put it within the enumerate environment
because I need control over what I'm doing (when I tried that the line
with S got enumerated anyway). I tried putting it in the description
environment but that only seems to let me indent one time and that's
it. Is there a way to indent stuff like this without using ERT? If
not, why isn't there? I'm also doing this in the description
environment which seems to be really picky, and I'm not sure if I'm
using it correctly. I heard something about putting in forced white
spaces but there should be another way to do it. If someone could
upload a test file that would be great.

There is a GUI for figures in LyX?? I was thinking more like something
that Word or OO has where you have a little figure drawing toolbar and
you can insert shapes into the document. I don't think LyX has that. I
like that program because you can use a GUI to make things and you
don't have to rely on numbers and code to draw a figure.

I really like this one. http://ipe.compgeom.org/ Could this or
something like it be Incorporated? Exporting the EPS is fine but
sometimes I find I made tiny errors and it would be pretty cool to
edit it from within LyX.

Go to edit - paste external section and select one of the options. Be
warned it doesn't work all that well for me a lot of the time -
sometimes I need to restart LyX to get it to see the outside text..

Cool, I got it to work with TIPA using the following code:

End

Neat. I just wish there were an easier way to mark text. I posted a
feature request on bugzilla that requested drop down menus for things
like colors, font sizes, and hopefully char styles. That would be
really cool.

Just one more question though - I put a true type font in using MTFI,
for which I have the following clunky ERT every time I want to use it:

\usefont{T1}{stacish}{m}{n} \selectfont hello \usefont{T1}{ae}{m}{n} \selectfont

How can I make this a simple charstyle-insert?

I just make a rule that says all mail to lyx-users@lists.lyx.org goes
in a certain folder (or in the case of gmail, is archived and labled
with LyX). This works fine for me and catches all the mail.

What function would I use to align the paragraph from say, a toolbar.
I came across "paragraph-params-apply" but I don't know what kind of
stuff to pass it, if it can take anything...I just want to be able to

I think I originally installed over 1.3.7 so something got messed
up..anyway even though it's working it doesn't work like it does in
1.3.7 (see the linguist problems) so something's wrong.

With Qtree, the lines aren't drawn in, but show up if you do a ps2pdf run.

I wouldn't really recommend this pre version to anyone, because
Instant Preview doesn't seem to work and there is some kind of bug
with people who have several drives..Just a warning. Still waiting for
the final release...

I can't get this version to work. Do I need to build the dictionaries
to make it work? I tried doing sh configure and it still won't load. I
uninstalled the old version of LyX too to make sure nothing was
interfering.

Okay, it sounds like we're having the same problem. It definately goes
beyond the reasonable amount of time I would give a program to process
previews, and it seems quite random. I had a bunch of subscripts and
there were some which just did not turn into instant previews without
clicking them, while other ones automatically did. I'll try the
scrolling up and down trick - and maybe this is fixed in 1.4?

Instant preview not instant

I was going to post this again in the IPA question list, but I thought
I might post it here. I'm using LyX 1.3.7 on Windows. Sometimes when
I'm working with instant preview (not just linguistics, when I am
writing math papers with subscripts and so on), LyX will not
automatically change everything into an instant preview. I'm left with
a weird looking paper where half of the subscripts are in instant
preview and half aren't. The only way to get them out of this mode is
to click on the item and then click outside of it - usually then it
makes it display. Is this supposed to happen, or are the images
supposed to display "instantly" sort of like how graphics display? Am
I doing something wrong? I can send a screenshot if someone is
confused about what I mean.

When I open up a document sometimes I have trouble with the instant
preview too, especially with linguistics trees and stuff. I couldn't
seem to reproduce the problem with my math paper and subscripts (given
a couple seconds they all turned into the instant preview version).

Hmm, been trying to use some IPA in documents - does anyone else have
the problem that when instant preview is used and you can see the IPA,
the formatting of the document is really weird (as in, you can't put
it inside a large amount of text, there is a very large gap between
the display and the rest of the text). When you go back into editing
mode, it is fine.

Also, any ideas on how to get around shortcuts which use the pipe
character | ? It seems to change them into a double pipe when going
into the equasion.

the tree - usually with the // command? Also, is there a way to make
it automatically preview all of the images once you open a document

Is there a better way to select special special fonts other than doing
ERT? I know under character I can change it to san serif or whatever
but for a special font I installed I have to do something like this:

\usefont{T1}{stacish}{m}{n} \selectfont myword \usefont{T1}{ae}{m}{n}
\selectfont

in a huge ERT snippet.

I'll see what I can write on it - although if others could add to it,
it might be better, because frankly I did not know what I was doing
when I found out how to make it display IPA and trees. Also if this is
going to get removed in 1.4 should we wait to write it? (Although I've
been tracking the xymatrix bug page and it looks like it might be
fixed and included for 1.4!!)

I tried to get Covington (numbered examples) working but I can't seem
to do it using this same method. Everyone please vote on this bug at
bugzilla, or add comments: http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=325

It's obvious LyX can support this stuff, we just have to get it
implemented in a better way! I noticed when I went back to my
document, it forgot to do instant preview until I clicked the formula
boxes a bunch of times, which was inconvenient.

It's also bad that after just learning this, the support will go away
in LyX 1.4. Please vote on this bug too, to reintroduce xymatrix
support:

Sorry about the spam, but I figured out how to get simple trees from
qtree working (I much prefer it to xytree, but I thought only that
might work because of the xy library or something) Try a tree like
this:
\xymatrix{\text{\Tree[.S [.N This ] [.V is ] [.NP [.Det a ] [.N test ] ] ] } }

and then hit the convert to formula button. Yay! Doesn't work with
qtree, though, for some reason.

Hi there! I was messing around after looking at this tutorial 
(http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/XY-pic) on how to get XY pic to work on LyX
and I got some limited tree support with xytree and TIPA working!

Here's what you do. Install xytree and tipa packages. Then try some
example things like this:

The first will display a tree the second will display some text with
TIPA right before your very eyes. Read more on the xytree package
about how to make other trees and stuff. Just remember to replace
xytree with xymatrix. I heard that this support was going out in LyX
1.4, but this makes me very sad. Since it's so easy to add the support
for trees and TIPA like this, why not add it for real in the next
release? I'm sure it would make many linguists very happy.

Wow, I actually did get it to work, which is sad since the support is
going away in 1.4!
 For example:

Will display a small syntax tree. Awesome!!

something about a CJK version but I was wondering if there was any

Having a number list not restart after titles?

I have a numbered list and would like to put in titles over parts of
the list. However, whenever I insert a title, the numbered list
restarts at 1. How can I put in titles over parts of the list and have
the numbers not reset?

II'm using the plain PDF view, the one that creates from PS
files..should I try the other PDF export things? Could someone

I'm using the \usepackage{hyperref} in my preamble, and when I write a
URL in the text, it will turn into a link, however the 
\href{http://www.lyx.org}{LyX} type things do not work and just show
the plain text "LyX" without a link. What am I doing wrong?

More support for ERT snippets?

Hi, I have a feature request, because I'm pretty sure you can't do
this from within LyX.

I saw some Lyx Documents written in a kind of sneaky way having to do
with ert, it would be something like
(ertbox) begin blah (end ertbox) the text (ertbox) end blah
(endertbox.) It was made like this so you could edit the actual data
that went between those tags more easily. I started using this method
for inputing IPA text with \begin{IPA} and \end{IPA} so I can see
what's going on easier.

I was thinking it would be cool if LyX would add more support for this
kind of thing. Perhaps a user could predefine types of ERT and then a
box of that type, say a box that said "IPA" could be inserted into the
text, and everything inside this box would go inbetween the IPA ERT
tags for example. This would lead to much easier editing. Also there
are other commands that might not go between tags, like \Tree for
qtree. Then I could define a box that would show up as a Tree box
which would just act like an ERT box, but formatted better and only
everything after \Tree showing up.

Does this make sense? For now it is a little hard to format documents
with a lot of ERT in it. Allowing for custom types would make
documents easier to format. Thanks.

Inserting Accented Characters easily?

Is there a trick to inserting accented characters? I just copied in
the chars I needed but it got tedious keeping track of all those
different accented chars after a while. Sorry if it's a dumb question
but I might just be missing something very obvious...

Using Covington (problems with ERT - latex conversion!)

I am using the package Covington to make numbered linguistic examples.
The following text displays fine through latex:

\gll Dit is een Nederlands voorbeeld. 
 This is a Dutch example. 
\glt `This is an example in Dutch.'

But in Lyx, it does not line up like it should. I checked the Latex
output file and it turned it into this:

\gll Dit is een Nederlands voorbeeld.

This is a Dutch example. 

\glt `This is an example in Dutch.'

\glend

Which doesn't line up properly. How can I stop ERT from putting in those spaces?

Ugly fonts and Getting Rid of Date

I have two questions:

I wrote up a document and exported it to PDF. I had some TIPA encoding
there, which looked fine when I zoomed into the PDF. However, the
other text got pixely and bad. Am I using a bad font or something? How
can I fix it so it looks nice no matter how zoomed in I am?

Also, how do I get rid of the automatic date that is inserted in all
my documents?
