Daniel,

That will work.

In the next mayor version (2.4), LyX will show both user and system
templates in one dialog, so you can just put your own ones in the user

Excellent idea.

Steve,

Not applicable. But, about 15 years ago I used PSTricks to create a
scannable form. Took time but worked.

These 'forms' are not like a voting ballot. One is a checklist of compliance
with the state's environmental policy act, another describes the project's
compliance with the local critical areas protection needs. And so on.
Question and answer type forms. Then there's the biological
evaluation/assessment which requires addressing specific issues.

Because I no longer have a typewriter, use windoze, or want to write
manually I recreate the 'forms' in LyX.

Sometimes the specific appearance matters, most of the time it's the content

First, if the forms will be OCR'ed, you'd better have the right font
and spacing. Otherwise, it's pretty easy...

Your layout file defines environments and commands. Commands are the
basis of character styles, and can be used for other things too.

So invent a stylename (environment or command) for each appearance you
see on whatever form you're imitating, and then do a little trial and
error with the styles until yours looks exactly like the sample.

I haven't discussed the nuts and bolts of custom layout grammar. If you
need that, give me back a shout.

I have recreated a number of forms required by the local Medical
Industrial Complex :-)-O using tables, judicious spacing and other
trickery to achieve reasonable similarity which has been accepted in
each case.

I usually use Komascript but have a few legacy forms that I created in
Memoir and they are not broken.

It's a lot of manual labor, even only once:-)-O and you can template
(variables like $$SURNAME$$) with Perl (or for the younglings Python
:-)-O) if you want.

The really complicated and colorful forms I do in LaTeX with the PDF as
the background and then use something like \usepackage{lpic} so I can
place the variables right where I need them, usually incorporating
them into Perl scripts.

Using Pashua for simple forms and Platypus to create (simple) Apps on
the Mac makes this quite powerful.

Usually these forms change over time but in particular the lab I use has
overlooked the outdatedness of my forms (probably because they are happy
not to have to try to read my handwriting :-)-O)

Thanks, Stephan. That's a good work-around. It would be nice if the
paths settings in preferences accepted multiple directories using the
same syntax that the operating system paths use (colon separators in
Linux) and at least populated the "Look in" select box with them, if not
the shortcuts on the right-hand side.

Thanks for the response. On my system, Ctrl + Shift + N is bound to
buffer-new-template, which is the default binding (at least with the cua
bind file). That does the same thing as File > New from Template: it
opens /usr/share/lyx/templates. There's no LFUN specific to the local
templates directory, so my guess is that you have the local templates
directory set in the template path field under Preferences.

Do you have a convenient way to use the templates installed with LyX (in

Thank you Daniel.

Clicking on either list view or detail view once or twice just brings
it or from one to another. Right clicking on the directory doesn't
allow me to do anything.

Clicking on list vies does show **two** columns in the window. However,
the individual, single files are the first, at the top, instead of
under the directories. Which have always been on the top.

The detail view delivers a single column, the individual files are still
shown at the top instead of below the directories.

Ce la vie. I think I will just have to live with it.

Thank you for your suggestions.

Stay well,
Charlie

I realize I was not very precise. I'm attaching a screenshot of my LyX
dialog; not sure it will work so let me describe as well.

The last 2 icons (before "Documents" and "Examples" are "list view" and
"detailed view" (I do my best to translate from French).

I suggest that you select the latter. Then you end up with an
explorer-like windows, where the columns have titles "name", "size",
"type" and so on. These are clickable. A small arrow (up or down) next
to one column shows how the files and folders are sorted.

Try clicking on the "name" or "type", once or twice. If I do that, I get
precisely what you describe, but then a 2nd click restores the
"directory first" sort order.

Thanks Daniel,

There is another thing not working with LyX as well and has been so for

Will probably just have to live with these things.

Weird directory, different order of templates...

2018-05-21 Thread Charlie

Hello Everyone,

In my templates directory when opened with a file manager, my
directories have always been and still are on top, and below
them the various individual files in that directory. That has
always been in LyX as well.

Suddenly, the opposite is true in LyX, my directories are at the bottom
of the directory I open, and the individual files are at the top, so I
have to scroll down to get to the directories.

I imagine I have probably used a some obscure keyboard shortcut to have
this happen, but I have trolled through these and am unable to find the
one that does this. If that is actually the cause.

Would appreciate any advice.

TIA

LRP,

What is your OS and version of LyX? Do you have memoir.sty installed?

On my Slackware-14.2 systems, all running LyX-2.2.3 there are multiple
book classes, including memoir, listed under Settings -> Document class.

Sorry for the late response here.

This issue has been discussed before.

Storing user files in the application bundle like this, and expecting the user
to discover them by control-clicking or right-clicking on the app icon, IS
WRONG. Apple DOES NOT EXPECT users to even know that this is possible. It is a
"power user" concept.

These things should be stored in /Library/Application Support/LyX/templates or
/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.1/templates (as appropriate) and the path in
the application should point there.

A possible fallback is to store them in the app bundle, but make them
accessible from menus within the app so that reverting to control-clicking on
the app bundle is not necessary.

I thought this had been fixed.

thank you - changing the path in the "Preferences -> Paths -> Document
templates:" box to

/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/templates
solved the problem for me.

On my installation of LyX,

 /Library/ApplicationSupport/LyX/templates

so that may be a more convenient place for the templates to be placed.

Hello José,

2 GB is only necessary if you install ALL things that LaTeX offers. LyX needs only about 70 MB.
Therefore install LyX once while you are connected to the Internet and you will get automatically
all LaTeX-packages used by LyX.
Note that you can alternatively also install LyX while not being connected to the Internet. Then go
afterwards to the University or an Internet Café, connect to the Internet start LyX and then use the
menu Tools-> Reconfigure. Then LyX also tries to download and install all necessary LaTeX-packages
from the Internet. (That can take a while as I wrote.)

-What version of LyX the team think to put on Ubuntu 14.04 repositories?

That is not our decision. The Ubuntu people decides what LyX version they take. You can nevertheless
download a LyX Ubuntu-package from LyX itself:

http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyXOnUbuntu#toc3

-In Ubuntu repositories there are full LaTeX engine?

Not that I know. They also only offer by default a subset of all available
LaTeX-packages.
(However I am on Windows only and cannot say it more precisely.)

The accents problem is not a lyx issue, but wrong keyboard configuration, so
even if you upgrade to the newest OS you will remain with that problem, so I
recommend you to check your keyboard layouth been in spanish, any version

Hello José,

This installer version unfortunately came with a major bug that destroyed all
shortcuts. As a
Spanish user you are most probably affected. Please excuse for that mistake.

You have now 2 choices:
- either uninstall LyX 2.0.7 and reinstall it using this installer:
   ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/2.0.7/LyX-2.0.7-Installer-4.exe
- or uninstall LyX 2.0. and install instead the brand new LyX 2.1 release
candidate:

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/lyx-2.1/lyx-2.1.0rc1/LyX-210RC1-Installer-1.exe

(When LyX 2.1.0 is released in about 2 weeks you can easily upgrade without the
need to reinstall
LyX. Just install LyX 2.1.0 over the existing LyX 2.1RC1.)

The reason is that LyX uses a lot of packages and the LaTeX engine for Windows
does not offer to
install all packages at once (that would be more than 2 GB). I therefore
recommend that you go to an
Internet café, download there the LyX installer, keep your Internet connection
open and install LyX
right in the Internet Café.
The installation might take a while (up to 15 minutes, depending on your PC and
the Internet speed)
so just drink a coffee in the café ;-).
Finally you have a full functional LyX and can go offline. Problems as you had
should then not occur.
Note that the installation of all the LaTeX packages is only necessary once. So
as log as you keep
the LateX engine "MiKTeX" on your PC everything should be fine after the first
installation.
Therefore assure that you keep MiKTeX when you uninstall LyX 2.0.7 (there is an
option in LyX's
uninstaller).

regards Uwe

Hi:
I don’t have the possibility of a full internet connection, so with some
help, I reached the LyX-207-Bundle-3 installer for Windows. Install perfect.
All great until I try to open some templates from File/New from Template
(see “ 0 showing_templates.png”). Sadly many templates from this collection
shows “errors” with missing dependencies that needs to be downloaded from
internet (see “1 Show_error.png”). This problem don’t happen with Lyx on
Ubuntu 12.04, where it seems that all dependencies are downloading
automatically from the OS repositories during the installation process.

¿What is the possibility to fix this for people like me who has not full
connection to the internet from Windows?

Re: Mac OSX LyX Install: No templates included

2013-01-01 Thread ericob
At least with the LyX 2.0.5 distribution for Macintosh, the disk image
provided contains the LyX application and an alias to the Applications
folder. Nothing else. It does /not/ include an installer program.

Lacking an installer program, I wonder how the resource files (templates and
such), that are stored /inside/ the LyX application bundle are supposed to
come to be at ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-2.0. I didn't know they
were inside the app, so I ended up downloading the source and digging around
in /that/ folder in order to find these things. Ugh. If there is no
installer available to move these resources, perhaps the application should
just look for them where they /are/, rather than in my user's Application
Support folder.

"LyX.app" is the LyX application. If you do not have the Finder Preference
"Show all file extensions" set, the file name for the app will be only "LyX"
- without the dot and "app."

With Mac OS X, complex applications often exist as "bundles" (which I
suppose you could think of a special kind of folder). To view the contents
of such a bundle, Context-click (right-click) on the bundle and choose "Show
Package Contents." The application will open onto a view just like you see
when you open a folder.

There, open the "Contents" folder, then the "Resources" folder and /copy/
what you want in order to fill up the empty folders in ~/Library/Application
Support/LyX-2.0. You don't need to work from the distribution disk image -
the application you dragged to your hard disk is the same thing as the one
in the disk image.

Although if you /do/ work from the disk image, you will avoid accidentally
moving the items out of the application bundle, rather than copying them.

2012-10-28 Thread Murat Yildizoglu
Hi Mark,
Lyx.app is what you use when you launch Lyx from your Applications menu. It
lives where you have installed Lyx (normally /Applications ). When you go to
this folder using finder, you will just see Lyx, but it is in fact a folder
called Lyx.app. You can normally right-click on it and choose to explore its
contents. Then you will see that it contains several folders, and one of them
is Templates.

Normally Lyx creates a lyx folder in your personal Library folder, in the
Application support subfolder. This folder contains your personal
configurations for Lyx. I am translating this from French, and telling by
memory since I cannot access to my Mac at this moment, so please do not
hesitate to look around the locations that I indicate, you should easily find
these folders.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
In OSX templates are only installed in the Lyx.app bundle. With finder, you can
explore inside this bundle and copy from there the templates folder into your
personal lyx folder in ~/Library/Application support/lyx . Then you can
indicate to Lyx this folder as the Templates folder to use in the preferences.

I too had the "No templates included" issue.

I read through the logs of the installation, and found this command.

I logged in as myself - the user that copied the files into the
/Applications directory.

 *cd /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/
 python -tt configure.py --with-version-suffix=-2.0*

I reran the command and all of the code installed properly in the
Application directory without errors. (There were errors in the cleanup
parts of the script in the initial install.)

Then I manually copied the files from the LyX.app directories to the user
   ~/Library/Application\ Support
directories.

Where
   cp -a
is copy with archive, that option keeps dates and permissions the same for
the files and sub directories that the command copies, and does the copy
recursively.

Let me know if this helps.

I looked for an installer script in the Resource in the Application but
found none.

I could not find a proper installer in the configure.py code either.

*cp -a templates/* ~/Library/Application\ Support/LyX-2.0/templates/.

Sorry, this is an open issue. You have to copy them manually.

Please, open a finder window.
Choose "Applications" or "Programme" at the left and select the LyX.app

Re: Mac OSX LyX Install: No templates included

2012-04-24 Thread NoraH
I seem to have the same Problem with the missing templates.

Lately I installed LyX-2.0.3+qt4-carbon.dmg, downloadable from the Lyx
webpage.
I followed all the instructions on the installations walkthrough and the
programme is running, as I dragged it to the Applications folder. BUT there
is no Lyx installer on my .dmg and my version of Lyx lacks the template
folders in the Libary.

How do I get this installer? Is it ment to run from itself on this updated
version?

I don't believe so, but why would you need one? What are you trying to do?
I use memoir all the times, and I always start with a new document and
set the class to book(memoir) in Document>>Settings.

Is there any specific memoir configuration you would have to use a template for?

I would expect that allowing direct entry of appropriate metadata within
LyX, and then using LyX's own XHTML export routine, would be fairly
simple to do.

Rob Oakes has also been using LyX for epubs, so there is interest in
moving LyX further in that direction. It's just a matter of enough
people getting involved

Steve & others,
I found these comments to be very interesting. LyX is a great editor,
and it seems that it is moving gradually away from its roots as a LaTeX
"front end".

How much effort would it be to incorporate the "metadata tweaks"
directly into the LyX document? It would mean that LyX could become a
major method of writing eBooks.

I know. This would mean either (re)configuring sorts the templates into
an "available" and a "something-missing" directory, or a custom dialog
with filter option replaces the current file-selector.

In my test, there was no way to distinguish between working and
non-working templates but a warning pop-up *after* I selected a template.
A rather discouraging experience for a new user and not helpful if I want
to find a template that works among a majority of non-working ones.

I don't want to make the "restricted-working" templates unavailable, but
I would like a listing of the templates that work (and a button or a
sub-directory with the other ones).

And in my opinion LyX is one of the most productive long-document
editors the world has ever seen. Little things like rejecting double-
spaces and double-newlines make me much faster as I worry less about
mistakes. Its low-crashability and low-corruptability make for fast,
confident working conditions. Its steadfast adherance to styles-based
authoring makes it easy to build documents the right way. LyX's beige
default background is easy on the eyes and yet easily contrasty enough
for bad vision -- I should know, my vision's horrible. And, in spite
of all the publicity, LyX is WYSIWYG enough that a single glance tells
you which pieces of text are special styles. Contrast that with old
WordPerfect 5.1, where the whole doc was courier, and if you wanted to
see any evidence of styles you'd need to do the WordPerfect equivalent
of LyX's View->PDF.

Oh, one more thing. I'm now using LyX to author Kindle books -- no PDF
involved anywhere. It goes like this:

LyX->eLyXer->metadata tweaks->Kindlegen->Upload

But LyX is such a great editor, and so styles adherant, that it was
the obvious choice. I tried editing eBooks in Sigil for a little
while, but that was a migration to Pity City.

LyX is a GREAT editor.

While this could/should be implemented as part of a custom
template-selecting dialogue, I use the following workaround:

- set the template path to the user templates (~/.lyx/templates)
- add a link to the system templates in this dir.

First, I don't think this is possible, at least not without major
surgery. The templates are simply opened from a file dialog.

But the more important point is that the templates DO "work with the
current installation". You can't compile them, but you can use them in
LyX, experiment with them, etc. (The full dialog does actually explain
this.) That is why "Unavailable" document classes are still, um,
available. As Helge sometimes points out, this is important. You can
install LyX without LaTeX if you like (say, on a netbook with a 4GB
SSD), and it will work just fine for editing.

IMV, it would help a lot if LyX could filter the templates that do not
work with the current installation. We do this for document classes, so
the vast part of the required logic is already available.

Many of the template names as well as the templates themselve do only make
sense together with special document classes for special needs.

The templates correspond, mostly, to certain document classes. So
elsarticle.lyx is a template for documents based upon the elsarticle.cls
class, which is used by some Elsevier journals.

ok... However, does it make sense to include so many templates that

The external files required are LaTeX document classes, packages, etc.
There are bazillions of these, for various different purposes. It's not
expected that you would have them all installed, though you can easily
enough install the ones you need.

The idea of having more
descriptive names isn't bad, but then they'd presumably be in English,
which isn't good for everyone.

Whether we like it or not, we have to accept that English is the
common international language. I don't have a problem with that as
long as national languages' features work (like diacritics, for
example).

We do have non-English-speaking users, and the current naming scheme is
intelligible to them, whereas a purely English one would not be.

There isn't an article template, though perhaps there should be, as it
would give basic guidance to newcomers.

Should i send a suggestion to the developers mailing list?

Better yet, create the template and send it to the mailing list.
Basically, a template should exercise the basic features of the class,
and make it clear what needs filling in. Should be easy to do, and a
good way to get a feel for LyX, besides.

The naming scheme is ok, and at leqast works well for those who
comes from latex. Our users come from many places.

Perhaps the template folder could have a index document, that
simply list all the others with a brief explanation of
what they are?

Of course, "Additional.lyx" seems to have this, but it has several
pages detailing the use of each class.

Hi,

i'm new to LyX (i have a bit of experience with LaTeX though) - i'd like to
help my friend to migrate her work from Word (bleh) to LaTeX world, and i
thought that LyX might be a good way.
I wanted to check if LyX suits us by compiling some LyX samples and
modifying them, so i opened some LyX templates (File -> New from
Template). To my great disappointment, i don't have any idea what the
names of most of them mean (what is ijmpc, for example?). Moreover, in
most cases LyX says "The selected document class requires external files
that are not available". I've only succeeded with "letter" (which is quite
straightforward) and "thesis" (partly).
Am i missing something big? Is there any simple article template?
Would it be good to suggest changing templates' names to something more
intuitive?

thanks in advance,

They are located inside the software package. The current state
is to either copy them from there (e. g.

Another option is to modify the path in preferences and set it to

One one computer I installed on top of LyX 1.6, on the other
computer it was a fresh install of 2.0. In either, no templates.
What can I do?

It definitely should. They should be in /usr/share/lyx/templates/ for

This refers to the phrase "LyX is not supported on Mac as I would like".
And it's a matter of fact that it costs some time to answer a question.
And it's no disaster to wait for an answer two days.

A little cryptic.

It isn't clear to me (a Mac OS X user) which Library/Application Support/
sub-directory the original poster refers to. There is the system-wide
directory under /Library and the one under $HOME. Although I guess as there
is no Lyx-2.0 folder in the system-wide /Library on my Mac where LyX is
installed that the reference is to the $HOME location.

The standard templates and layouts that LyX uses are stored in the
application bundle for LyX rather than /Library, which I believe would be
the more Mac natural location. Depending on where you are when you look for
that content you may have to use an often overlooked key-modifier with your
mouse click (so overlooked I can't recall what it is at this moment). There
are regular posts here about the tutorial.lyx file being missing; it isn't
it just hidden in the bundle and needs that arcane knowledge in order to be
seen.

The templates and layouts that LyX can use from $HOME/Library/Application
Support/LyX-2.0 are the user's own versions (whether modified from standard
copies or self-developed). Immediately after installation the various
sub-directories are empty because nothing personal has been added to them.

As a workaround so you see something you can also follow this advice from Jens
Nöckel in a post on Fri, May 13, 2011 at 1:52 AM in response to a similar
question of mine.

Hello Zan,

the installation of LyX-2.0 uses another folder for the user settings and does
not touch the 1.6 settings.

Regarding the user configuration there are two possible scenarios:

1) you want to make a fresh 2.0 install
That's what you did, effectively.

2) you want to continue with your 1.6 files
Then you should copy and rename your folder Library/Application Support/Lyx-1.6
to Library/Application Support/Lyx-2.0.
This is documented in the Documents folder of the LyX distribution media.
If you've used LyX-2.0 already you have to remove or rename the existing
Library/Application Support/Lyx-2.0 folder first.

However, if you want to use it via "New from template" it's a good idea
to keep in $LYXDIR/templates (where the value of $LYXDIR means the "LyX
user dir", depends on the OS and can be seen via Help>About LyX).

OTOH, you can use any directory and set the path under
Tools>Settings>Paths.

I have my templates under ~/.lyx/templates/ and in this directory placed
a symlink to /usr/share/lyx/templates/ (where the official LyX templates
reside).

Cursor in some math templates

2010-06-15 Thread Daniel CLEMENT
Hi,

I'm using LyX 1.6.5 since I upgraded to Ubuntu Lucid, and I'm slowly
discovering new features. Yet, is this one intended:

When you start, e.g., a math fraction, either with the icon or Ctrl-F or
whatever shortcut, the cursor goes to the right of the whole fraction,
instead of positioning itself in the numerator (or denominator).

As far as I remember, this was not the case with the previous version I
used (1.6.2 in Ubuntu Jaunty).

Wouldn't you expect to be ready to type the numerator right after
inserting the fraction?

Another example is when you prepare to enter some special math font,
e.g. calligraphic. There, too, the cursor goes after the box where you
would type the calligraphic letters.

What do you think of this? Can it be adjusted by some setting which I
have missed?

TIA - regards,

Depending on the length of the peper either the article or report classes

Hello from down the way at Brown.

1. Templates are just LyX documents saved in the place where templates
live.

Right. Think of them as examples you can customize.

2. Document classes are types of documents (books, articles, etc.)

3. But document classes are not just types of documents. They also can
come in multiple versions for each document type. (E.g., there can be
a dozen or more versions of an "article.") The distinction between the
different versions are largely stylistic, although they also can
reflect content. For example, a Springer article has a "Conjecture"
style, but most other article styles do not make conjectures.

Yes, and this makes more sense when you realize that LyX's document
classes map more or less onto LaTeX class files. The mapping isn't
perfect, because a LyX d.c. map actually map to a class file plus one or
more packages.

4. Modules yet a lower level of granularity, and individual modules
may correspond to individual styles.

Yes, and again you can think of modules as mapping to LaTeX packages,
though again that isn't exactly right.

I hope this understanding is correct. Even so, I still can't
completely connect the dots. Here are two things I still don't
understand.

1. I'm writing a conference paper. LyX has a few
conference/proceedings templates, but none suit my needs. Several
document classes could work for me, but they're not complete. For
example, a conference paper should list the conference, location,
etc., and most likely this information should have a distinct style.
How should one handle this? By adding a style to the document class?
(How?) By manually adjusting the appearance of text?

Here it is crucial to remember that LyX knows nothing about the
appearance of output. What it knows is how to "translate" a LyX document
into LaTeX. It is LaTeX that then controls output. That's the sense in
which LyX is a "frontend to LaTeX" (though also to other things). So in
any case where you want to do a lot of customization, you have to think
first in terms of LaTeX.

LaTeX will allow you to declare new commands and environments, which
will include information about how they are to be displayed in the
output. Once you know what you want to do as far as the LaTeX goes, then
you can create a layout file that will tell LyX about it. I.e., you'd
have something like:

Style Location
LaTeXType command
LaTeXName location
Preamble
\newcommand\location{...LaTeX Stuff Here...}
EndPremable
...More stuff to tell LyX how to display it
End
in a module, or in a new document class extending an old one if you
prefer. The LaTeX part is where the real work is. The LyX stuff can
actually be left at default, if you want. It won't look fancy, but it
will work.

2. I'd like to design a template for a working paper series. The cover
page would have a few graphics, a title, author, date, institutional
affiliation, and contact information. The first following right page
would have a title, abstract, and keywords. The second even page would
start the actual paper. It would have a title, abstract, and author,
followed by the text itself. What's the best way to do this?

This is a LaTeX issue again. So if you want to do this, you will need to
learn a good bit of LaTeX.

3. How do the various templates and document classes know when to
insert a page break? In other words, how do they control front and
back matter?

This is all done through the magic of LaTeX. LaTeX knows that certain
commands (\title, \author, etc) belong to the front matter, and in most
classes these commands do not actually output anything. They just define
certain variables to store the title, author, etc. Only when the command
\maketitle is the title page output, and its format is defined by the
document class. (LyX issues \maketitle when you stop doing things it
thinks go in the front matter, i.e., for which the InTitle flag is
true.) You can see this for yourself by putting the author before the
title. This is bad form, but it won't affect output. I.e.,

\title{My Title}
\author{John B. Author}
\maketitle
and
\author{John B. Author}
\title{My Title}
\maketitle
do the same thing.

Can the user customize or override this?

Hence, the answer to this is "yes, but doing so means modifying the
LaTeX document class file".

As a newbie to Lyx, I'm almost there in understanding how to use LyX and
have a few basic questions. Here's what I think I know:

1. Templates are just LyX documents saved in the place where templates live.

2. Document classes are types of documents (books, articles, etc.)

3. But document classes are not just types of documents. They also can
come in multiple versions for each document type. (E.g., there can be a
dozen or more versions of an "article.") The distinction between the
different versions are largely stylistic, although they also can reflect
content. For example, a Springer article has a "Conjecture" style, but
most other article styles do not make conjectures.

4. Modules yet a lower level of granularity, and individual modules may
correspond to individual styles.

I hope this understanding is correct. Even so, I still can't completely
connect the dots. Here are two things I still don't understand.

1. I'm writing a conference paper. LyX has a few conference/proceedings
templates, but none suit my needs. Several document classes could work
for me, but they're not complete. For example, a conference paper should
list the conference, location, etc., and most likely this information
should have a distinct style. How should one handle this? By adding a
style to the document class? (How?) By manually adjusting the appearance
of text?

3. How do the various templates and document classes know when to insert
a page break? In other words, how do they control front and back matter?
Can the user customize or override this?

Thanks for your help.

inserting external files: templates question

2010-02-08 Thread Richard Brown
Hello.
In the embedded objects manual, and in other places in documentation, I
find it written that I can include files in my lyx document by using
Insert > File> External Material and then choosing a template.

But all of the documentation says that available templates are chess,
date, lilypond, raster images, and pdf.

On my installation I don't have a template option for pdf: why would
that be, and how can I remedy it? I get allof the others, but no pdf

I don't have any problem opening templates with 1.6.4.x on OS X
10.5.8. Please do post the file you're having trouble with, or if it's
a problem with all template files, post a detailed procedure so that
we can try to duplicate it.

please can you open new bug in our tracker and attach such crashing file there?

Pavel -- thanks; couldn't go to 1.6.4.2 since I haven't gone to snow
yet on my MacBook.

I've now found a non-template-based doc that crashes lyx 1.6.4.1.

Uninstalling lyx and everything tex; re-installing mactex and lyx
1.6.4.1 didn't help.

Found a solution for that non-template doc by opening in 1.6.2 (on a
G5); eliminating \ensuremath, exporting to tex, importing to 1.6.4.1.

However, template docs still cause trouble in 1.6.4.1 on my MacBook
-- e.g., I can open a new beamer template maybe 1 time in 10 tries
without lyx crashing. Just tried again, successfully opened and
closed a beamer template 3 times in row but then lyx crashed after
the last close with no other docs open.

Lyx 1.6.4.1 on OS X 10.5.8 crashes when opening a document (either
new or created with Lyx 1.5.x) using any template.
Preferences:Path:Document Templates points to /Users/name>/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.6/templates.

Advice?

The file you're editing has already be registered with version control.
So you have to `svn co' or whatever first, to get the relevant file
checked out. Then open it in LyX. Now the VC menu will be populated, and
you can check out new versions, check in edits, etc. Pavel Sanda
implemented the svn support and is the current expert on VC in LyX. I'm
sure he'd be happy to answer questions.

Is there a way to do the templating and selection of sections in a
reasonable way in LyX? Maybe the master doc is created with a bunch of
includes in it that has every include available, and then sections
that I don't want can be commented out, and sections I want can be
uncommented.

LyX has support for templates. Selection of sections could be done in a
wide variety of ways. Probably the most high-tech would be to use
branches. So maybe you have a handful of these, (de)activating them to
turn on or off various things. Of course, you can also just delete what
you don't need in a given case.

If I have an include in a document, is there any way in LyX to pull
that content out of the include and just insert it directly into the
master document? Or could something be done using the tab support and
opening each section in it's own tab for ease of navigation?

No to the former. The latter is pretty much how it works by default.
When you open the master, all the children are opened in the background,
though not in the GUI, and they then appear on the "View" menu, at which
point they can easily be opened in their own tabs. The Outliner will
show you the whole master document, too, and if you click on some
section in a child, the child will appear in a tab.

Can LyX collapse sections within a document if I'm not working on that
particular section?

Oft requested, but doesn't currently exist UNLESS these sections are in
branches, in which case they can be collapsed. So if you really want to
collapse, just put each section in a branch. They call all be the same
branch.

If this is something that is too complex for the user's to learn, it's
something that will never happen. So it would need to be laid out and
simplified as much as possible, and ideally everything would need to
be done through LyX and without requiring the use of extra software
apps directly (such as svn commands on the command line)

As I said, the only command line stuff necessary will be the initial
set-up of the svn-controlled directory. Once that's done, everything
else can happen from within LyX.

Question on managing templates and features

2009-02-11 Thread Jay Austad
I have a problem. Say one had an environment where document creation
for clients is done with Microsoft Word. There is no real version
control in the environment, and engineers writing technical
documentation spend half of their time fighting with line by line
formatting issues with Word, and the other half of their time dealing
the mental anguish of it all. Templates exist for document layout,
but there are typically several versions floating around so no one
knows which one is the latest, and templates typically need to be
modified extensively depending upon the purpose of a document.

I had a vision of a system that would solve these problems by doing
the following:
- Store a master style, or several master styles that are used during
document creation
- Store "templates" for documents that are for different purposes.
One selects the type of document they want to generate, several
prewritten sections are selected that would normally go into that
document. The user can deselect sections, or select addition sections
and reorder as appropriate before creating the TeX source and starting
the editing process. The prewritten sections are updated regularly by
subject matter experts, and creation of a new document always causes
the most updated information to be pulled.

- All edits are version controlled

I was thinking of using a database and a web app to do this. This
isn't very convenient though, because writing of the documentation
would have to happen with an internet connection. LyX looks very
interesting to me. I have very little experience with TeX, but enough
to know that it's definitely superior to Word. Can LyX provide the
functionality that I need? I installed it, but the version control
menu is empty. How do I go about setting up LyX to work with SVN? I
couldn't find documentation on that.

And, the big question, how would one go about implementing a system
and workflow that provides the functionality listed above. It needs
to be as straighforward as possible. I'm going to be dealing with
cross-platform clients.

Is there a way to do the templating and selection of sections in a
reasonable way in LyX? Maybe the master doc is created with a bunch
of includes in it that has every include available, and then sections
that I don't want can be commented out, and sections I want can be
uncommented. If I have an include in a document, is there any way in
LyX to pull that content out of the include and just insert it
directly into the master document? Or could something be done using
the tab support and opening each section in it's own tab for ease of

Thanks for any input you guys have.

I assume that what you have is a LaTeX class file: newfile.cls. If so,
you've put it in the right place: in the LaTeX folders. But that is
LaTeX, not LyX. LyX knows nothing about the new class unless you give it
a layout file that describes it. There is info in the Customization
manual about how to deal with this, and lots of us here have dealt with
this issue ourselves.
