Re: Personal Hotspot Creation

Hi all.
Don't mean to be political here but why is it in the UK all network
providers allow internet tethering whereas in the states they are not?

I don't remember seeing a post on this, but I use my iPhone 3GS as an Internet

All you do is enable the personal hotspot setting under Settings and when you
connect via USB, the mac should automatically see it as a network.
This is on the iPhone by the way.
I find it very useful; you can connect via Bluetooth but I haven't worked out
how to do it yet.
Hope this helps to answer your query.

Hi all

Firstly I'm very sorry for being somewhat out of the loop on this topic. It's
one which I have been intending to investigate for some time but due to
off-topic difficulties, I haven't been able to do so as yet.

It is my understanding that it is possible to create a personal hotspot and
thereby use the iPhone effectively as a modem for a Mac via a USB connection.
I'm not sure whether this has been detailed on list before but, if not, does
anybody happen to know how this is achieved? If so, does anybody happen to know
when the message was posted and what it's subject line was? In that case I
would just check out the list archive.

Thank you for any assistance on this. It's something I would very much like to
be able to get working.

iCloud email varification issue.

Any thoughts on how I can resolve this issue?

Re: iCloud email varification issue.

2011-10-18 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Jim,

A couple of thoughts:
1. Do you or any of your family already have an apple ID associated with the
email address where you're expecting to receive the verification email? I had a
similar issue and found out it was caused by my having already associated this
email with another apple ID. Apparently this can cause the issue you're
seeing. I was able to find out about this other ID by using the link named
"Not sure if you have an Apple ID?" which you can find at the following page.
https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/

2. I've read some reports where Users of gmail addresses were able to get
around this issue by editing their apple ID and adding a single period
somewhere in their email address and saving the changes. It Sounds risky to me,
but it might work. You might want to google the words "iCloud email
verification problem" as there are several threads active on the issue and a
number of posts give details on the use of this method.

HTH,
Bryan

should indeed be that you have to set it up per iPhone, if it costs extra they
can keep it. We'll just continue using the iPad on its own.

Hi Chris

Actually I've decided to investigate the client/server Podcast Composer and

Hi Gordon,

I infer from your message that you are using the USB cable to tether your mac
to your iphone rather than using the Wi-fi or bluetooth tethering options. If
this is the case and you're not seeing a service named "iPHone USB in the
services list of the network preferences pane in Lion, perhaps you could try
manually adding the service to that list . The "Add service" button is located
below the service list in that same pane.

Re: Personal Hotspot Creation

2011-10-18 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Bryan

I'd rather use Bluetooth but I understand now having looked into it that the UK
does not have free tethering on all networks after all. On ours, for example,
you have to use a "bolt-on" to add tethering to your account.

All I want to do is use the iPhone as a modem but it seems you can't do that.

When I click the "Setup personal hot-spot", I am prompted to visit a website on
our provider's services page. So it doesn't look as though it's free after
all, unless your account is a new one in which case it is free for a very
limited time.

ExpanDrive on sale as today's mupromo -- does it work with Lion?

2011-10-18 Thread Esther
Hi All,

I notice that ExpanDrive is today's MacUpdate promo at half price ($19.95).
This is a GUI-based solution that lets you transfer files to remote machines
that you would SFTP or FTP to and has some slick features, like the ability to
reconnect to the machine when you move your location, which is handy when you
are using a laptop. It also apparently has been keeping up with the device
interface changes better than OS X Fuse/MacFusion. MacFUSE is the effort to
support cross-platform file handling. (I used to find some of the MacFUSE
releases buggy or unstable, especially earlier on. MacFUSE is no longer being
supported as of August 2011 and has been superseded by Fuse4x and OSXFUSE.)

Gordon, I recall that you used ExpanDrive after the version 2 release. Any
comments about the product now, and specifically about how well it works with
Lion, which I can't check? It's convenient to have the Finder-like interface
for remotely mounted drives, especially those on non-Mac systems. However,
since I updated my copy of Panic's Transmit to version 4, I've been using that
instead; I think it's faster and has more options. I didn't update my version
1.6 ExpanDrive license for that reason, and I don't know how well it works
under Lion. ExpanDrive has a simpler interface that some may like, and I
understand that some people like the Windows version of ExpanDrive that was
released in July as being very fast on that system. The present ExpanDrive
license covers both Mac and Windows, so that may be a selling point for some
users.

Any thoughts? The MacUpdate site has a link to their free trial download at:
http://www.mupromo.com/deal/1643/7024/expandrive

For new users, the MacUpdate promo site does require a one-time negotiation of
a CAPTCHA to set up your account. Afterwords, you can login to find a record
of your receipts and purchases, and links to the software. This makes it easy
to find your registration serial number records. The half-price promo is good
for the next 12 hours.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: ExpanDrive on sale as today's mupromo -- does it work with Lion?

2011-10-18 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Esther

Just to expand slightly on my somewhat terse response a moment ago. Yes, it
works with Lion. The 2.x release hasn't been updated in a while but there's
nothing significantly troublesome that would kill it with Lion. We haven't had
to use it in a few weeks, but one of Lynne's friends is using it and she says
she couldn't live without it with her macs, which all run Lion.

In actual fact I think I need to set this up again since one of our servers is
playing silly animals and we need to try and get that sorted. Thank you for
reminding me about this, Esther.

In the "View" tab of Mail Preferences, you can decide upon the level of header
detail by manipulating the pop-up box labeled "Show Header detail".

Re: Message Headers Group

2011-10-18 Thread Desi Noller
Right James, I get that, but even when I have "none" checked under headers,
when I open a message, instead of automatically reading the text as used to
happen, after reading the headers, I hear "message headers group" and nothing
further is read. I'm sure there's just some other little thing that needs
tweaking, but so far, I haven't figured out what it is! :)

Re: How to add a new VO short cut for web access? can

2011-10-18 Thread Travis Siegel
To add shortcuts for vo operations, you need to enable the numpad
commander, then you can assign keys on the numpad to any vo command
in the list, you can move the commands around, assign them to any
key, including regular, command, control, shift, and option keys.
If you don't have a numpad, then this method obviously won't work,
but I personally won't be w/o a keypad, so there you have it.

partitioning an external drive for a bootable backup

2011-10-18 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,
Can somebody refresh my memory on how to create a bootable external disk for
snow leopard using disk utility? I want to upgrade to lion finally and want to
make a back up of my mac which is now running snow leopard. I have carbon copy
cloner, but I want to make a bootable external drive with my external drive,
just in case something goes wrong.

Also, is anyone currently running fusion version 3 with win xp under lion? I
heard it doesn't work, so don't want to do this upgrade if that's so, since I
need fusion and k1000 for my school..

thanks,
Cait

Re: tintin

2011-10-18 Thread Travis Siegel
No, there isn't, and this is something I've complained about as
well. There really needs to be a toggle as to whether new speech
should interrupt existing speech, or go into a cue to be spoken when
the current speaking is finished.
You'll get used to it, but it sure is irritating, especially during a
long compile, I always have to turn off cursor tracking before I
start the compile, then review line-by-line after the compile
finishes in order to get all of the output.
I've asked apple to consider this toggle as an option, but since it
was requested several years ago (back when leopard was in beta
testing) I'm guessing they decided it wasn't worth implementing.

Re: knowing the length of an mp3 file

2011-10-18 Thread Travis Siegel
If you use column mode in finder, when you have a file highlighted,
simply vo-right arrow, and it opens the info window automatically,
which will show the duration of the file. A vo-left arrow will close
the window, and you're back at the file you were already looking at.

Re: How to add a new VO short cut for web access? can

2011-10-18 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi there!
You can also set up either keyboard commander shortcuts or even trackpad
commander shortcuts!
So take your pick!
1, vo+f8
you should be on general, scroll across to allow voice over to be controlled by
applescripts and check it!
2 press command+8 and that should take you to commanders!
then there are tabs for num pad, keyboard and trackpad!
3 select the one of choice then scroll through the options!
I can only talk about the keyboard one!
4 enable the keyboard commander, then you have a choice of either the left or
right option key to use as your modifier key [the right one should be already
selected] and you can only use one for all keyboard shortcuts!
then go to the add button and select!
So here you need to pick which key you wish to use [there are a few already
used] like M for mail and S for safari and T for time!
So when you made your letter or number choice type it into the field you are on
[ you must put the key choice in first]
5 then scroll right to the menu button vo space on it and you will find all the
options including the one your on about!
6 Just select it and it will be set!
So in future you'll just need to press which ever option key and the one you
chose!
In that menu you will also find custom in there you can pick applications like
Skype and others which you can also give a shortcut key for!
One tip though do not set one up for Itunes!
There can be a con flicked with the option key, when you use the shortcut you
can get the Itunes library chooser window!
This can also happen when using vo+space to open Itunes!
The way I open Itunes is from the doc with enter!
Now hopefully your not asleep and I've not board you!

Hi Sarah,
Perhaps a restore of iOS is in order, but I'm not sure. I've had it take a long
time before, but never that long. It always finishes.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hi Sarah,

Automator Trouble

2011-10-18 Thread Jane
I have a workflow made to turn text into audio, encode the audio at a certain
bit rate, import into iTunes and let me set the info. The trouble is that when
I run it, it always says it's busy, it stops responding and I have to force
quit the first time I give it a new text document. The second time it
runs--reluctantly, but it runs. this is annoying and I am wondering what to do
about it.
