There's no VoiceOver command for accessing "longdesc", and no Safari
or Chrome user interface for "longdesc". So to access "longdesc" you'd
need some sort of add-on or script. (I'm not aware of any that have
been written for these programs.)

I'm a member of a group working on the next version of HTML. Currently
(and controversially), the current draft specification recommends
authors do not use "longdesc". So I'm interested in use of "longdesc"
in the wild. Would you be able to provide the address of any webpages
that use a "longdesc" you'd like to access?

If you are the author of the page, would you consider other means of
providing the information such as:

* Providing a visible link to the long description after the image.
* Including a long description on the same page as the image. This
could be declaratively associated with the image using the
"aria-describedby" attribute. When JS is available, you could hide the
description by default and provide a button that shows it when
pressed.

An advantage of these approaches is that the long description is
available to everyone who might have trouble using the image using
widely implemented features. A disadvantage is that the availability
of the long description might not be advertised to screen reader users
who jump from image to image on the page. Also, obviously, these
approaches have an impact on the visual design of the page.

Also, what guidance are you following that suggests "30 words" is the
maximum suitable length for an "alt" attribute? As an author, if you
wouldn't want to add a visible long description or visible link to the
long description, would you consider providing the whole long
description in the "alt" attribute? This is what the current HTML
draft spec suggests.

Re: navigating to a longdesc link in an image

2011-12-07 Thread Carolyn Wagner
Some images on the web provide an alternative text version that should describe
the image. In certain cases a description of more than 30 words is necessary to
describe the image so a longdesc attribute is added to the image tag. Like this
 The longdesc
is a link to page that has a longer detailed description of the image.

I was wondering if there is a particular command or setting to link to the
longdesc from VoiceOver. Right now, VO only reads the alt text "a picture of
me". But doesn't allow for me to link to the fulldesc.html page.

Re: Navigating to the end of word

2011-12-07 Thread Esther
Hi Roger,

VoiceOver's default behavior is to read the character you just navigated past,
so if you're using your right arrow key to navigate, then the character read
out is to the left of the cursor, and if you were using your left arrow key to
navigate, this would be the character to the right of the cursor. The same
thing applies to navigating by words. If I use Option+Right arrow to move over
the phrase "Hi Roger" by pressing the Option key and tapping my Right arrow
key, the first tap will give me "Hi" and the second tap will give me "Roger".
At that point, my insertion point is just after the final "r" in "Roger". If I
now continue to press the Option key and tap the Left arrow key, I'll hear
"Roger", and a second tap will produce "Hi". My insertion point is just before
the initial letter "H" in "Hi". Tapping the Right arrow key gives me "H", and
places my insertion point just after the initial letter "H". If I were to tap
the Left arrow key, I'd also hear "H", as my cursor
traverses the letter in the opposite direction, moving to the left from just
after the letter to just before the letter.

On Mac laptops, the way to perform a "forward delete" of the character to the
right of the insertion point is to press Fn+Delete. Also, although most of
the same keyboard combinations for moving and editing that you use for text on
the Mac will also work using Bluetooth keyboards paired to iOS devices, because
the "Fn" key is not enabled for use under iOS, you'd have to forward delete
characters by selecting them and then pressing the "Delete" key. Specifically,
hold down the shift key and tap your right arrow to select one or more
characters, then press the "Delete" key. For example, let's say I wanted to
change the phrase: "show this is true" to change it to "how is this true" and
my insertion point is before the "s" in "show". I'd press the Shift key to
start my selection, then tap the Right arrow key to select the "s". Than I
would press the delete key. Of course, you can also continue to select words,
lines, and characters while still holding down the Shift key,
before pressing the delete key to delete all your selected text.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Slightly off topic. does anyone here have an old apple powerbook G3 spare for parts?

2011-12-07 Thread Lewis Alexander
Hi all,

sorry to post this rather slightly off topic post. I've just taken on a
powerbook g3 pismo in a very nice condition for the project, however the
removeable DVD rom drive is dead (previous owner had damaged the main panel
leaving it missing the cover, etc)

does anyone have an old powerbook G3 lombard / wallstreet / pismo laying around
no longer used or for parts they would be able to spare or the drive needed
please.

sorry it's off topic but as we're all mac folkies here and causing trouble, I
thought it'd be a good place to ask.

by the way, have had some headway on outspoken. a very kind gent has sent me an
outspoken 9 disk, am still however looking for an outspoken 9.2 updater if
anyone knows anything.

cheers gang

The interface is supposed to simple though I'm not sure just how accessible the

Yes, only put the voices you want in the rotor and also when you go to the

How is it possible to navigate to the end of a word using either Mac OS or
Voiceover commands? I know that option right and left arrow will navigate
word by word but the focus always seems to be at the beginning of a word.
The problem is that this function ignores spaces punctuation and line
brake. So for example I have been trying to edit a document in text edit
and needed to edit the end of transformer. Pressing option right arrow
will take me to the next word which is actually my name David. However it
is a period, 3 carriage returns and several spaces beyond the end of the
word transformer. Pressing option left arrow will jump me back to the
beginning t of transformer but where I want to be is on the final r of
transformer.
I halve VO set to read character to the right but would not have thought
that this makes a difference.

David Griffith

I think I can answer my own question. You do indeed have to turn off the option
for voiceover to read the word or character to the right. This is a feature
which was introduced to make VO more familiar to Windows Screen Readers but I
now now know that it has serious limitation. If you turn this off VO will
travel obediently to the end of a word rather than jumping over line breaks
punctuation and spaces to the next word.
I will try and get used to the default way of editing documents with the
cursor passing over either side of characters and words.

Re: Navigating to the end of word

2011-12-07 Thread Marcy Weinberg
Take my name, for example, Marcy Weinberg.

If you press option right arrow, and hear the word Marcy, the cursor will be
after the y but before the space, so if you left arrow the cursor will be
before the y, and if you press option right arrow, the cursor will be after the
space and before the W.

Hope this helps!

hi,

I think, by the sound of it, you've set up the language rotor by mistake, so
that when a swipe happens, you can change language.

I'm not able to fully explain how to do it at the mo as I've got to fly out on

wow.

see you guys later.

RE: misión contro

2011-12-07 Thread David Griffith
You can disable mission control keystrokes in system preferences.
I think control left arrow brings up mission control by default. On the Mac
though you tend to use the option and command key rather than the control
key. The control key is used in conjunction with function keys to access
parts of the screen

You do not use the control key for text reading or navigation. So command up
arrow will generally take you to the top of a document. Command right and
left arrow will take you to the beginning and end of a line. In finder
option shift down arrow will select files to the bottom of a column. .To
navigate one word at a time use option and either the left or right arrow
and so on. The control key is rarely used in the same way as in Windows.
If you are trying to read a paragraph at a time then press VO P to read
paragraph and then VO page down to read subsequent paragraphs.

Regards

David Griffith

RE: Navigant accessibility -> was bad-Elf.

2011-12-07 Thread Bubba
If you don't have the new version installed how can you say anything about
the new version one way other on accessibility or anything else! First
install the new version then talk about it. I understood the poster very
well below but I have the new version installed. Where you don't and the
poster was posting for those that have it the new version not people that
don't have it or Navigant at all. Also it does when raining sometimes the
sun will shine so better take that raincoat with you all the time! But I
understand if you have never seen in your life and have to depend on what
someone said that you would think if it is raining the sun is not shining .
But take it from someone that has been a seeing person most of his 53 years
on this earth that the sun does shine sometimes in the rain and sometimes
the moon does not shine at night and just because something is wet does not
mean it is water and just because something is cold does not mean it is
ice! I still very lucky still have a little vision in my right eye enough to
see if the sun is shining in the rain and knowing I have an ice cube in my
hand without asking someone this is cold and wet is it ice! But this is OT
and if you want to take this up off list I will be more than glad to tell
you about what it was like and is like to see some! This is my JMT and JMO
and it is not from hearsay!

Well, thanks much for the insight into the source of your information if
nothing else. Generally, if I'm walking in the rain and others tell me the
sun is shining, I will go with what I can share from personal experience,
and accordingly suggest a rain coat. Now I know that when you say JMT, you
are in reality sharing what you read on other lists from people who may or

For the benefit of those who may have recently joined, or just became
interested in Navigon, I will repost my initial findings after installing
version 2, since I for one would not have understood the instructions below
unless I already knew what the person was attempting to convey.

  Greetings y'all,

This afternoon I took a trip via Para transit. I pulled the
destination up in favorites, set the route type to "car" and started
  navigation.

There were a couple other pick-ups/drop-offs along the way, resulting in
the need for a lot of rerouting. Throughout the nearly 50 minute trip,
Navigon continuously gave directions even though I was concurrently
streaming Audio, reading eMail and playing with Ariadne GPS just for good
measure. Navigon was rarely ever in the foreground.

While in the foreground, however, I discovered that double tapping the
speed indicator, located in the top center of the main Navigon routing
Window just below the status line consistently presented a dialog where I
have the option of quitting the route, adding an interim destination, and
  several other choices.

It was only a matter of time, but while Navigon 2.0 includes current
maps, it now requires a $15 in-app purchase in order to receive quarterly
updates (the duration was unspecified, but I would presume it's yearly?).

  Best regards.
  Geoff

  Hi Sarah and list,

Your LiveJournal post was very well done and may serve as an excellent
resource for anyone who is having trouble getting started.

I listened to your Audio demo several times, and followed along, even to
the
point of adding my nearest Subway to my favorites. First of all, there is
a
huge disparity in our load times. I counted about 13 seconds until
Navigon
loaded for you. On mine I hear two double beeps instead of one. The
first
occurs after about four seconds and the second is emitted two seconds
later
when Navigon is completely launched. I would therefore conclude that my
load time is about 44% of what you're seeing. Perhaps this accounts for
my
  lac

Hey bubba, that sounds like a decent plan to me. I still have the 3GS and to be
honest, for what I use it for, it does a great job. I don't use it for the
internet etc as I'm not a fan of using internet on small touch screen
interfaces with big fingers like mine.

other than that, the 4S sounds like a worthwhile investment justifying the
price though seems a bit of a thing. £500 pay and go and we're waiting for o2
to release as pay and go. I don't like contracts as it's just something that
I've had a very bad experience with some years back.

As always, it's an amazing product and I love the feel of it.

I do have to admit one thing though.

I wish the iphone was a bit larger and thicker.

Excuse the rant but here goes. woof woof woof!

These days, it's all about making a product really thin and light, but to
someone like me, I prefer something more rugged and thicker, weight's not an
issue but a larger device would suit better (not iPad size but say another 1"
either dimension would give some extra surface to work on and just a bit more
room. just a thought.

I love the 3GS to bits but as I say, I don't use internet on it. I prefer my
laptop to that anyday.

just wish apple would give us the freedom of tethering for the iphone to mac.
then guys like me in the IT sector can still have a modem for on road use or
emergency work, etc.

nice review bubba and keep it up lol

lew (off to bangor for a bit to pick up a laptop of great interest. woopee!)

Hi, well there is not a iphone4g but I assume you mean iphone4 and yes the
iphone4s has a much better camera. It has a 8 mega pix camera and the
iphone4 has a 5 mega pix one. Also the iphone4s has a much bigger lens and
other hardware with in the camera that makes it a much better camera also
don't forget the processer is much better and that is a bigger issue then
the camera. It has the same amount of ram but I think faster ram and you can
also if you wish to do so get more storage up to 64 gb and this is a much
bigger issue for some than the camera! Also you have the new voice command
and to most this is the biggest reason to upgrade ! So for the upgrade issue
there are plenty of reason to upgrade if your contract is up and especially
if you still have the iphone3gs! HTH and JST !

Also, I want to make sure, does the iPhone 4S only have a 5 mega pixel
camera, like my 4G?
If so, I will not upgrade until the iPhone 5 comes out next spring.

does the i-phone 4 s have the same hardware design as the i-phone 4, meaning
the power button at the top right hand corner, the volume and mute buttons
on the left edge when the earpiece is facing up at the top?
