RE: no joy with my new mac
It can take quite a time for updates to be installed so would counsel giving the machine lots of time to complete any update. I think I had to wait about 30 minutes once. The normal way to force a reboot is to hold the power button down. The advice Apple gave me though, when I had a problem with my iMac was to unplug the machine, wait 10 seconds and then start up the machine again. With a laptop I guess that involves removing the battery as well. Re: no joy with my new mac
That, however, becomes an issue, because on the more modern laptops, such as the MacBook Pro, the batteries are not user replaceable, and must be serviced by either an Apple authorized vendor, or an Apple store. John, out of curiosity, do you happen to know what year and model your Mac is? John - I'm a bit puzzled when you say the disc whirls; the MacBook air [yours as I understand it is the same as mine] has an SSD drive, so I don't think you'd hear any disc activity. I can't, but then again, my hearing isn't great! I think perhaps, if you've downloaded updates, as has been suggested, you may need to wait a fair while for installations to complete. If you press the function key and f12, do you hear a click [this is the volume up key combination, or it is at least, if your machine hasn't been set up to perform differently with the function key; if you don't hear a click, I think this means boot up hasn't completed. Re: no joy with my new mac
To reset the PRAM, you have to hold down Command, Option, p and r, then press the Power key and keep holding down the four keys until you hear the chime four times. Release the four keys and the machine will boot normally. Also, having done updates, it's a good idea to repair permissions. Re: no joy with my new mac
thanks but no joy at all it just does not load up with the power on it. would a mac os 10 help on an sd card. or on a cd could I boot up from there I wonder. it was o.k until it said re start. there is no reset button to defaults is there. with the iphone if all goes pear shaped you can press the home and top button to get it back. what I will do is switch on and leave it for an hour on it's power adapter see what happens. thanks for all your help though. Re: no joy with my new mac
Hi John, If that doesn't work, you can try Sarah's suggestion of booting to the recovery partition. This is a hidden partition that Apple now places on your hard drive that works as a replacement for the startup DVD. You can boot into the Recovery partition by holding down the Command+r keys immediately after powering up and hearing the chime. Keep holding them down for a while, until a window with OS X Utilities appears (since you have sighted assistance). You have options to restore from Time Machine backup, Reinstall OS X, Get Help Online, and run Disk Utility, so you can repair permissions. I haven't used this, but I recall that Sarah used the Reinstall OS X option recently. Sorry not to be able to provide first-hand details. Hope this explanation helps. You will have to download it from the internet. I heard but I'm not sure that this part is a bit harder to use, but someone better can guide you through the steps. what I would try first is this. 1. choose disk utility 2. choose your disk where the mac is, for example macintosh hd. 3. choose first aid in the tabs. 4. choose repair disk and wait. The progress bar will be toward the end of the window. 5. restart and see if that does the trick. if not reinstall the os. Re: it's talking
Hi John, You could try to go to Disk Utilities and repair permissions. If that doesn't work, you can do a reinstall of the operating system. There's also another possibility that is less drastic than a reinstall that you can try first, which is to boot into safe mode, with restricted use. Although you can't log in and hear VoiceOver when you boot into safe mode, because audio is not on, I've found that simply booting into safe mode and then rebooting fixes several problems. Permissions are automatically repaired as part of the safe mode boot, and some caches and log files are cleaned. This worked to fix Matthew's girl friend's Mac update a few weeks ago. To boot into safe mode, you press and hold down the Shift key immediately after your Mac starts up and continue holding it for a while (I think 40 seconds or so will do -- until a screen comes up). Then, leave it to boot up. This takes longer than a usual boot, because it does the repair permissions and the cache clearing. On a Mac with a normal hard drive, I can hear when the activity stops. Ten minutes should be more than enough, even on a loaded Mac (and yours is new). Then just boot up normally and see whether things work. I've found that Safe boot mode works to clear up some issues, so I've never had to use the recovery partition. Otherwise, first try using disk utility to repair permissions before you reinstall the operating system. There's also a way to force a reinstall from the network, I think, with Command-Option-R on the new machines, but I'm not sure of those details. HTH. Re: labelling buttons in the XM App
Hi Brenda, Just to confirm, I assume that you are talking about the SiriusXM app by SiriusXM? There is no trial version, though one can obtain a five day trial subscription. Okay, so on the assumption that we're discussing the same app, I was able to ascertain the function of all unlabeled buttons by selecting them. At the bottom of the window, left to right, I labeled the five main buttons as follows: 1. Categories 2. Channels 3. Favorites 4. On Demand 5. Downloads. While content is playing, you'll notice another button located in the center of the screen about a third of the way down (a bit below the play/pause button). I labeled that one artist info, though it will also display information about a channel. Lastly, if you are listening to a channel such as 82 (Radio Classics) that exploits the Start now feature which allows direct access to the last five hours of content, there is a button in the center of the screen near the top that I labeled: exit list. You can google for google chrome, no pun intended. I also hear firefox is usable, although I cannot get it to work as of yet, but that could be due to a lac of knowledge. Take care. Re: labelling buttons in the XM App
Hi Brenda, While a channel is playing, you will notice a button labeled: actionHeader in the upper right hand corner of the window. It is just below the battery level indicator status bar item, and just to the right of the artist name field. Anyway, when this button is selected, it will open a menu of options including: add show to favorites, add channel to favorites, buy song from iTunes, etc. Take care, and have fun with the app. Geoff On Jul 7, 2013, at 5:23 PM, meadowlar...@cox.net wrote: Yeah, we sure are talking about the same app. And, I sure do appreciate this. I'm going to keep a note of this, so I can fix it. Have you figured out how to add to the favorites list? Take care, Brenda mailto:meadowlar...@cox.net - Original Message - From: Geoff Waaler geoff.waa...@gmail.com To: Mac OSX iOS Accessibility mac-access@mac-access.net Sent: Sunday, July 07, 2013 4:23 PM Subject: Re: labelling buttons in the XM App Hi Brenda, Just to confirm, I assume that you are talking about the SiriusXM app by SiriusXM?
