2014-11-26 Thread Sarah k Alawami
On the web it's too chatty as it's reading tags that the aria frame work put
there. I personally don't' mind it as if done right a link can tell you more
then the text around it.

Take care.

Hi everyone. Sorry this is a bit late, but I've been going through my email
and deleting unwanted messages to try and find the root cause of a rather
odd problem. But here is a tip I found yesterday on AppleVis, which can help
with email verbosity. Apologies in advance if this is a duplicate post. But
you can actually control how much of the message is read when just arrowing
to it or going through email for the first time or whatever. To do this,
bring up the View menu by going to mail Preferences with Command-Comma, and
then tab to the View menu. I had to turn Quicknav on in order to find the
exact setting, but it is called List Preview. You will find a pop-up menu
which lets you control the number of lines read after announcing the
message. Hope this helps someone.

Yes, you can change this behavior in the text tab, but you can also use vo-v to
do it quicker.

Verbosity in E-mail

2014-07-25 Thread Eleanor Martha Burke
I am reading an e-mail with a link, when I come to the link vo says a shade
of royal blue on and it then reads the link. I have tried to alter the
verbosity from high, through medium and low but even on low vo still says
this about a shade of royal blue, it also seems to be reading out font type
face and colour. Any ideas please. This was why I was looking for Skype
help so someone might hear what is going on.

It’s worth a try. Maybe try it on 1 or 2 mail boxes and see if that works. If
it does let us know. If it does not it’s back to square 1.

Good luck.

No you can get threaded view in the classic view which you enable under view.

Re: Mail verbosity, improving productivity

2013-06-15 Thread Esther
Hi Mary,

Anne's correct that you have the option of using "classic view" for mail to
organize your mail reading the way it works in Snow Leopard. One thing you
might miss is the ability to just hold down the Option + Up or Down Arrow keys
for just a little while to move to the top or bottom of the message list. That
went away in Lion. You have to go back to using the standard VO+Home or VO+End
shortcuts for navigating to the top or bottom of tables.

Cheers,

Esther

2013-06-15 Thread Mary Otten
Am I correct in assuming that the only way to get threaded mail is with the new
mail view? I'm still on snow leopard but will probably be getting a notebook or
a newer desktop in the fairly near future. I love the way my mail reads now,
where I can just hear the subject line and vo plus j to the preview pane and
back again to the message list. Very efficient, except for the lack of ability
to delete a whole thread at once. With the new mail view, I wonder if I'd be
gaining that much with threading if it means a lot more verbosity and vo
interaction with messages in a thread.

Unfortunately, I believe that unless you use the classic view, you're stuck

Mail verbosity, improving productivity

2013-06-15 Thread Eric Caron
Hi listers and fellow mail users,

I read many messages from many lists. I would love to change the way VO reads
information to me as I arrow down a long list of messages. I have improved
things to some degree but would love some tips on improving productivity a bit
more.

I use the new view of Mail and have threads in conversations. When arrowing
down I have to hear VO say something like " 15 message conversation triangle
unread" I then hear the person's name and then the subject.

I would like to hear the Information about number of messages and status last.
In many cases hearing the subject would allow me to delete and not bother
hearing the other chatter for each and every conversation.

I have changed the verbosity to low in a mail activity so I now only hear "15
Message conversation." So this decreases the chatter but moving this
information to the end would be a great time saver and make a more pleasant
working experience.

Does anyone know how to change mail or VO settings to accomplish this?

gratefully,

Eric Caron

I wonder if the problem might go away with a restart of the computer.
I am thinking that if the ram is full, VO may lose the ability to echo the
information.
Perhaps someone can restart and test this.

Re: verbosity levels

2013-02-07 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi there!
Another option is to custom your verbosity under VO utility I'm not sure which
one will be the one to help but if you have a few Mins you could have a look to
see if any of the options are of use to you!
So you could keep standard verbosity on high and have the custom bits do stuff
where you like them and keep others where you need them!

Great podcast on Mac, VO and access and verbosity issues.

2012-11-29 Thread Danny Noonan
Find below info on a really enjoyable Access Wizard podcast
episode. I'm very glad to here it's not just me that find such things
frustrating and wonder why simple steps can't be taken to improve things for

I'm really enjoying all the Access Wizard episodes actually but this one really
clicked. Perhaps if enough of us are concerted, rational and articulate enough,
things may improve in the future.

Fingers crossed. :-)

Danny:

As mentioned in the last episode we’re revisiting OSX accessibility. We’re

It is not just about VoiceOver this time. Its about efficient user interfaces.
Some very basic concepts such as:

• Keyboard access

• Keyboard shortcuts

Followed by a bit of good old VoiceOver stuff like:

• Verbosity

As always listen to find out more.

Sincerely,

PS

Speaking of efficiency and keyboard access and tuff like dat you might want to
check out this old article by Apple. It hasn’t been updated in a while. In fact
implementation of full keyboard access hasn’t been updated in a while. Moreover
the so-called full keyboard access gives no access to sidebars and contextual
menus. **hint: accessibil...@apple.com is awaiting your positive and

Re: More on verbosity of numbers

2011-08-29 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Zack\

I guess this just depend on your perspective. I believe VoiceOver should be a
screen reader, not a screen interpreter. The function of a screen-reader is to
tell you what is on the screen, not what they think it should be.

I need to make it clear though that this issue differs from mispronunciation.
That is perfectly understandable on occasions and as others have quite rightly
pointed out, they can be fixes. I'm not picking faults for the sake of it. I
just feel quite strongly that VoiceOver's function should not be to preempt or
to guess, or to change the content of the display. VoiceOver should be a
screen-reader, and nothing else. Just my humble opinion, others are perfectly
entitled to differ.

Hi Nic

You've basically said it all. But, of course, my error earlier was forgetting
totally about the layer of control that Infovox presents. Infovox doesn't
always make things too easy as they use fonems to string together sounds.

I suppose that is reasonable in a way, as it allows you to customise things
pretty accurately when you get used to how they goners work.

Last point first. I need to write to AssistieWare I thin, because this is a
real issue that's causing confusion. Apple is definitely trying to put
substitutions in there. To be fair there is a pronunciations editor But it

Verbosity

2011-08-29 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi all

Just taken a break from work because I wanted to post a response to Nic's
message regarding verbosity of numbers.

Nic, you're quite correct. I totally forgot about the iVlx pronunciation
issue. I have to hold nmy hand up and say that I overlooked it totally, so I
retract my earlier comments regarding the verbosity of number.

Nobody is above making errors, and I certainly did that on this occasion.
However, I find the Alex voice nauseating. He sounds as though he has his
fingers stuck up his nose and it's interesting because I don't remember him
sounding this bad in Snow Leopard. As I type I'm using the Alex voice. The
inflection seems to have changed for some reason.

However, I was wrong on the numbers issue, by virtue of the fact that I
overlooked the iVox variable.

Re: More on verbosity of numbers

2011-08-29 Thread Chris Moore
This is where I think JAWS excels over VO, JAWS has so many different ways it
handles numbers and is very smart about it. It can be set to recognise phone
numbers, and it can also read numbers out as pairs so they are spoken as words,
such as 1 would be read out as nine teen etc. I was disappointed to see that
number handling in VO had not been improved.

Where VO does kick JAWS ass though is with title attribute in HTML. THis has
proven to be a real headache for me with the default settings for JAWS.

Hello Geoff

Nope, that's not going to help because you still get this problem, for
instance, in the Finder when you happen to put focus on the app. But I'm not
just referring to applications, I'm talking about screen interpretation in
general. A screen-reader is supposed to read the screen's contents, not
interpret them.

I think I need to qualify my last post a little. I'm talking about the way
screen interpretation is changed. I have the "VO Utility > Verbosity > Text >

the version numbers of programmes etc. is being taken way too literally, and
it's being translated into something totally different. The version number in
Esther's message, for instance, with the above VO setting set to "words" is
spoken as "Version the first of February two thousand and twenty-eight".

I think we need some sort of half-way house here. There shouldn't only be one
rule which covers everything. I need to think about this one a little, before
approaching Apple with a solution. But I just hate everything being read as
digits so I will keep that setting set to words and, for now, I guess I'll just
have to tolerate it.

before approaching Apple with a solution. But I just hate everything being
read as digits so I will keep that setting set to words and, for now, I guess
I'll just have to tolerate it.

More on verbosity of numbers

2011-08-29 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi all

I think I need to qualify my last post a little. I'm talking about the way
screen interpretation is changed. I have the "VO Utility > Verbosity > Text >
speak numbers as" setting set to "words". However, I did this because I don't
want to hear, for instance in the mailbox messages list, "one seven messages,
one six unread". I prefer to hear "seventeen messages, sixteen unread". But
the version numbers of programmes etc. is being taken way too literally, and
it's being translated into something totally different.
